in lieu of a commonplace book
saturday, jan 27, 2024
*brennan lee mulligan voice* heeeeeeeelllllllllllllloooooooOOOOOOOOO one and all and welcome back for another thrilling episode of...whatever this is. thank you for being here.
It's 2024! Say hi, intrepid heroes!
reading recently finished:
-orwell's roses by rebecca solnit (audio) - glad I listened, ultimately very gratifying - history, criticism, extremely lush garden-filled prose and love for growing things - nona the ninth by tamsyn muir - felt so much about [redacted] it made me cry. i can unblock ALL THE TAGS NOW - the blue sword by robin mckinley (audio) - catching up on old school fantasy continues -when the angels left the old country by sacha lamb (audio) - beautiful. not not in conversation with good omens but doing something different.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
recently begun: -the ministry of the future by kim stanley robinson - can't decide if it's a scifi novel or a policy brief about ways to combat climate change- reading on my mom's recommendation -babel: an arcane history by r.f.kuang - withholding judgment, but i know you probably want me to hate it and so far i don't, really! to my own surprise -the shadow of the wind by carlos ruiz zafrón (audio) - spooky, post-modern but incredibly good at sounding like it is of the time it depicts. many thoughts on the audio book narrator's accent work, most favorable -one corpse too many by ellis peters. wild that i have only just begun reading the cadfael mysteries
listening last week was about discovering and putting on continuous loop the group trousdale on the recommendation of @m2pixie (!) and other trusted friends; the energy, the harmonies! they fill a girl group void i didn't realize i had, it feels like the best kind of throwback, like old chicks or something, some desperately needed bops. exhibit a: bad blood.
Tumblr media
today my daylist introduced me to joy oladokun and i'm so glad it did. love her vibe, love this cover art. had to take a picture of my desk, the visuals were so satisfying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
watching the newest series of netflix's lupin!! so far i'm really, really enjoying where this season has been spending most of its time-- the new characters, the new heists, the new stakes. especially fun to watch with friends where we can all shout about the mrs doubtfire of it all, the betrayals, the misdirection, the 'he can't keep getting away with this!.' the original lupin series will always bring back memories of watching it in early lockdown; i'm glad that there's this now to think about and remember instead.
Tumblr media
playing hollow knight hollow knight hollow kniiiiiiight. bought it a few months ago when it was on sale, after hanging out and watching @dimir-charmer stream for us a bit, but playing it yourself is a different game. i'm having a blast. it's becoming a problem. i'm having to be so so good and mature in how much i let myself just get suckered in to a full day spent in my little buggy maze adventures. the temptation to keep going until i've made a meaningful advancement of some kind (today: got the longer nail! last time: beat hornet! saved zote the mighty, got the baldur shell charm, and beat the gruz mother!) is very, very real. have also gotten around this by listening to lots of lo-fi hollow knight beats to relax and study to while being 'productive.'
Tumblr media
(found this screenshot online, and holy extra health batman)
making pancakes. lots and lots of weekend pancakes. sent a bunch of mail since new year's, and have some new arts and crafts (charcoal pencils!! those little paper cone blender guys! better paper) to fuck around with next time i want to get ~artistic. watch this space.
working on teaching is so all-consuming. it's great, i love it. the course (maps class! if you see that tag, this is that) is going well, i think! first three lectures down. the students i've gotten to know i really like, the material has yet to get old (see one - do one - teach one is so real. i understand this class now, finally, in a way i don't think i did just being the TA, even after three times). it takes so much longer to just copy-paste-change color and font on slides than it should! i've regularly been getting four-five hours of sleep on monday nights before teaching on tuesdays, but it has meant that i don't have the brain space to be self-conscious while i'm 'on', i just. go. having fun selecting teaching 'fits, having (less) fun handling all the students who joined in the second or third week and need help with catching up, but it's not their fault there was a waiting list and lots of turnover.
Tumblr media
(petrus roselli - portolan chart of the mediterranean, 1466)
non-teaching: - student letter of recommendation for dental school (DONE) - conference panel proposal (due 1/31) -submit revised conference paper for that prize (due 1/30) -send draft of grant application to A for her to be able to write a letter of recommendation (due IMMEDIATELY WHY ARE YOU ON TUMBLR) (you have until 2/15 to fix it but she needs the draft!) -chapter 3 edits (lmao) -read for that other course you're meant to be the TA for (oops) - give i. feedback on her thing (tonight) -RAship hours (c'mon these are actually paid work, please do them)

// off blog story \\
// TWs; Mention of Running Away, Self Depreciation, Sleepwalking(?), and other things I’m not sure how to tag! \\
Kittsu stared at the door leading to the house in which she was staying. He fucked up. Badly. And for what? He left his employer to handle swarms of customers by herself what, just because it got a bit too loud?
Pathetic. Kittsu needed to make up for its mistakes, but it was already so late and he doesn’t know if his apologies meant anything anymore. He doesn’t want to knock. It’s 11 pm. If he just knocks once, his boss, and effectively landlord, would come and let her in, but Kittsu couldn’t stand the fear of not knowing how she’ll react.
Kittsu had charged its phone at the Pokémon center earlier to many missed calls from Mrs. Bee. Worried, maybe? Angry, perhaps? He couldn’t tell. He didn’t want to bother her anymore than he already had.
Maybe he should disappear again.
He gulped in front of the door, shivering as the outside temperature gradually decreased. Kittsu looked down to see Aeries’ curious gnawing on his leg, presumably asking why they hadn’t gone in yet. ‘How dare Kittsu simply stand there, refusing to unblock the entrance to Aeries’ comfy bed?’ At least that’s what he likes to imagine Aeries saying.
She giggled a bit at the small Vaporeon looking impatiently between she and the door. Raising her hand to knock once again.
Kittsu paused again, her throat suddenly tight. Why is she crying? Why now? Mrs. Bee doesn’t need to see him cry. It’s shameful, it just shows how much of a baby Kittsu is when confronting the problems she herself created. Mrs. Bee doesn’t need to worry about Kittsu. She shouldn’t…
Kittsu resolves to wait outside the door until she can get her act together. She has no reason to cry, and nobody here deserves to see her Kroododile Tears. It’s shameful; to cry in front of someone who is not at fault. Kittsu has no reason to be upset.
She knows that’s a lie. There doesn’t need to be any reason, but this is the only way she can stop herself from crying over reasons she can’t quite grasp.
Kittsu sits on the porch step staring out at the streets of Santalune City, the market stalls having been cleaned up earlier in the afternoon. Arceus, how selfish of him. He knew he should’ve gone back to help clean at the very least, but apparently he can’t even do that.
Kittsu doesn’t believe himself. He doesn’t know what he believes. He knows other, more mature people will tell him he’s wrong. But wouldn’t that just be another method of fishing for attention that she doesn’t need?
He realized he’d stopped crying now, Aeries still standing by the door, tail slapping against the deck impatiently. Kittsu is so fucking tired. He’s not sure he has the energy to even knock on the door anymore. He just wants to sleep in a comfortable bed but he knows it’s only his pride keeping him from that. Stupid, stubborn Kittsu. So self aware yet unwilling to change, what, just to make himself suffer? He has no reason to. Why does he want to hurt?
Oh. Kittsu’s crying again. Aeries gave up standing by the door, now draping herself dramatically over Kittsu’s boots. She sighs, and picks up the Vaporeon with little resistance. She steps off the deck and begins walking towards the Pokémon center a few streets away, occasionally stopping to listen for Houndour.
They approach the Pokémon Center and are greeted by the bright fluorescent lights, the street illuminated from the sliding glass door. A LED light sign hung on the side reads “Open 24 hours a day,” and flashes in obnoxious patterns.
Kittsu walks into the building, the door ushering her in like a hungry maw. He doesn’t quite understand what’s happening anymore. Arceus, when did she get so tired? When was the last time she slept? Today, right? Or was that yesterday? She can’t tell.
Kittsu sets her backpack down by one of the chairs, and brings Aeries and her Pokeball to the nurse across the desk, requesting that Aeries is allowed to stay overnight. She’s only half awake as she pays the extra fee, Aeries staring at her looking mildly betrayed. Why was she doing this again?
Oh right. She’ll have to leave tomorrow, or, well, may have to leave. The agreement with Mrs. Bee is that Kittsu could stay with her for as long as she worked, and Kittsu had failed to hold up her end of the deal. Arc, she was so tired.
Once everything had been taken care of, Kittsu retreated to where she had placed her bag, and sunk into the chair. She barely registered when she had curled around herself, hoodie used as a makeshift blanket. She could tell she was falling asleep, maybe she already was. Maybe she was sleepwalking this whole time! Wouldn’t that be neat?
Kittsu could feel her eyes getting heavy, and she didn’t do much to fight against the force. She was really, really tired.

To the girl who used to be my best friend
I know you probably will never see this, and I probably don't deserve it, but just in case you ever unblock me...
I'm sorry that I was overbearing in how critical I was of your relationship. I may not have agreed with how he treated you, I may not have thought he was good enough, I may not have thought it was a good idea, but it wasnt my relationship. It was yours. You just wanted to talk about it, and I met everything he did wrong with overprotective criticism rather than anything that could have been more helpful. I am sorry for that.
I'm sorry for inserting myself into the situation a lot just because I knew the guy. At the time, I thought offering an outsider perspective would have helped you guys, but I went about it completely wrong. Looking back, if I had concerns, I could have worded them way better. Instead of being a good friend, I made myself the enemy. I am sorry for that.
I'm sorry for passive aggressively distancing myself from you and cutting you out. When I felt that the times I really was trying to help you were being treated like a plot to break you guys up, I got mad, and did not know how to go about it, because the situation wasnt about me. I felt our dynamic change as friends, and neither of us were in a good place to confront that. I was hurt by things you said and did, but I wasnt mature about it either. I am sorry for that.
I am still hurt by how you chose to handle things, but that does not make me innocent or a victim in these circumstances. I am very aware I could have done things differently now. I've been working on myself, trying to grow out of my bad habits. And while I am sure, in fact positive you want nothing to do with me ever again, I at least want there to be some chance that you might see this apology one day, just so you are aware that I may have been mad, and I may be hurt, but I do know that I contributed things ending the way that they did. I may be stubborn, and I may have some ideals that I don't realize yet, but I can certainly admit when I've been wrong.
For the record, I still have fond memories of our friendship. You were the Rachel to my Monica, you helped me get through a lot of things, you did a lot of big favors that I do not forget. I miss the weekends at your family's house where we watched Mega Mind and played Sims. I miss the girls night in your apartment. You were my ride or die, and I desperately wanted to be yours too. I want you to know that even now, the biggest problem I had with everything was I wanted you to be given the best treatment possible. The anger I had toward this guy you were with was a result of him making you sad, and I genuinely hated knowing you were not happy, especially when you really wanted to be. The one thing I told that guy multiple times was "please don't hurt my best friend." I know that probably won't change anything. I'm sorry it was too late, and I'm sorry that I made you feel unsupported and like I didn't care. I really really did. And I still miss our dynamic.♡
Though you probably wont see this no matter what... I'm putting stuff I know you liked in the tags to at least give it a chance.

All-in On Crypto: Internet Giant LINE To Launch 5 DApps, Two Altcoins
It goes without saying that the crypto industry is built on and by its users, but a majority of the world’s population have yet to interact with blockchain technology, and subsequently, cryptocurrencies. However, one of the largest social media giants on the globe intends to amend this problem, recently launching a series of protocols, platforms, and systems that will undoubtedly bring this up and coming technology to the mainstream.
LINE Goes All Out On Crypto, Worldwide Adoption Incoming
As reported by NewsBTC in late June, LINE, an Asia-based internet firm that has a user base of hundreds of millions, made its first foray into the cryptosphere, unexpectedly revealing plans to launch the so-called “BitBox” exchange to a global audience. Initially, many disregarded this move, with some cynics believing that the Tokyo-based firm was launching BitBox as a ‘money grab’.
But as the easy-to-use, well-designed exchange began to gain traction following its launch, it became clear that LINE meant business when it came to crypto. Just one month after BitBox hit the phones of millions on nearly every continent, Unblock Corp, LINE’s Korean blockchain-focused subsidiary, launched a corporate token venture fund, which saw a seed investment of $10 million.
The announcement accompanying this news alluded to LINE’s plans to bolster the development, maturation, and adoption of crypto assets, as Unblock Ventures will likely become an integral part of that goal.
Still, somehow, the Japan-based internet company continues to impress, revealing its vision for its own “token economy” and decentralized application (DApp) ecosystem on September 28th via a press release that outlined its exact aspirations. An essential part of this planned economy will be LINK, which is a digital asset based on LINE’s in-house blockchain. Despite the firm announcing this token in early September, the details surrounding LINK were rather scant, as it wasn’t made clear exactly how the crypto asset should be utilized.
But now, LINE has revealed that its cryptocurrency can be used in its to-be-launched DApp ecosystem, along with on the BitBox exchange as a substitute for trading fees and a tradable asset. The social media firm has launched a Japanese variant of LINK in a bid to stay in line with local regulations. While LINK Point, as the variant has been named, may seem to have limited features, arguably, it is more attractive than its global counterpart, as Point can be used to make payments at over 94,000 Japanese retail outlets through LINE Pay.
To accommodate these two new cryptocurrencies and that blockchain that they are based upon, LINE has also launched LINK SCAN, the company’s first attempt at a block explorer.
As aforementioned, LINE’s plan to enter crypto go much deeper than two cryptocurrencies, a venture fund, and an exchange, as the firm has revealed a series of five DApps — Wizball, 4CAST, Pasha, TAPAS, And Step. The recently-launched Wizball is a Japanese exclusive platform that will allow users to share information via a Q&A format, while also rewarding users with LINK Point tokens. 4CAST, a clever play on the word “forecast”, will enable users to predict the future outcomes of events, similarly to how Augur allows consumers to create and bet on markets.
Next is, Pasha, which is set to become a service for users to write reviews about products. As its name implies, TAPAS will be a food-focused application, which will allow users to review and research eateries across Japan. Last but not least is STEP, which will be a fully-fledged social media service for the common consumer to create and share stories, which consist of location tags and photos. Pasha, TAPAS, and STEP are scheduled to be launched by the end of the year, so expect these applications to hit your devices soon.
Although LINE may be overly ambitious, it has become more than evident that LINE has caught the ‘crypto bug’ and is ready to go all-in on crypto as a result, so don’t expect the startup to fold its cards any time soon, that’s for sure.

So since nobody can see my post, for time being as nobody follows me, not that I’m complaining or anything, I guess I could rant for a bit for no apparent reason right? Meh, nobody will see it anyways so, why not give it a try? Might be ranting for a while so let’s consider this as part 1, I guess?
So, in the past, I was really some kind of arrogant, dense and egotistic-ish type of person and I was literally arrogant and insensitive to others and was dense to everything happening around me to the point that I didn’t really took into consideration what others’ opinions may be; I’m not sure if that’s the case now but, to be honest I still feel like I am and little did the old me knew, I actually gained some people who hated me, or at least dislike me.
Now, old me was clueless about those things back then until a close friend of mine started to spout some sad stuff on her status and soon, deactivated or blocked by Facebook (zucc’d, as we’d call it). I thought that was actually the case until I realized that she was still chatting with the others in the group chat we were with together and they would tag her on things and I got really confused, so I talked to her boyfriend (now her ex) about it, we were friends and she was a mutual, and he explained everything to me and explained blocking; along with that, he sent a screenshot of their conversation about me, turns out I was hurting her and those kind of things in between. After she unblocked me (probs because her bf told her) we were friends again until I asked her some help regarding character designs, and looking back at it, I was pretty unoriginal back then with that design, having referenced it from hers. So what she did was send me a picture of her character I based on, angry and from what I’d think, that was a sign as she blocked me again, this time her bf sided with her, naturally, calling a fake or something and also blocked me. They’re still blocking me to this day, although I’m not really angry or mad or hold a grudge against them besides, it’s their decision if they unblock me or nah.
Look, I don’t have no idea about their side and as to why they did it so I’m bias to my own statements as that’s the only thing I can work on and from what I found way back:  You know, they’re both so awfully childish and prideful.
Alright, let’s chop it up as to why, first and foremost, why can’t they just talk about it in a peaceful, normal and mature manner, they’re about my age so I’m sure they can hold up at least a little decorum for themselves and not just settle to just block a person they don’t want to be around with? I know, I know, that’s the one of the reasons the block feature was invented but at least think of what the other end would think about it at first or say as to why you’re doing it so that they won’t be confused.
Second, on that character design thing, seriously, there’s no need to be so mad over a design, can’t you just say that it looked similar to yours or something and actually helped out in improvising it? Honestly, we’re not even professional artists yet and I’m a nobody compared to you.
Third and lastly, if this has been going on for so long, then how come you still don’t have the courage to actually say why. This was like from so long, long ago and--to myself, you’re kinda ironic yourself, to rant over spilled milk. You gotta be joking me, you’re childish enough already, learn some manners, me. Although, nonetheless, I’d still want to actually learn what really happened and that’s really it; after all, feedbacks are welcome to things like these right? I mean, that’s how we grow up right?
