Cassin’s Kingbird - Full Photo - A Unique Bird So Unusual That It Isn’t Even In Some Southwestern Region Bird Books including the just released Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s “All About Birds Southwest.” The giveaway differentiating this bird from a Western Kingbird is the white edge along the distal end of the tail feathers it also has a grayer head and is a bit bigger than the Western Kingbird. I am hoping a mating pair show up this Spring. I would really like to see this mating ritual: “In early spring, presumably after having chosen (or shown up with) their mate, they launch into a peculiar dance. With excited high-pitched calls, they hover in unison, wings outstretched, over a favorite perch. This dance takes place several times a day over several days, over several separate sites in an area covering 2 to 3 acres (8,100 to 12,100 m2).
