Xiamen Paragon – Lianhua Lane Complex & Waldorf Astoria Xiamen Hotel, China
Located in the Siming District of Xiamen, a bucolic coastal city in South China, Xiamen Paragon’s Lianhua Lane Complex is a mixed-use development comprising Grade-A office, luxury hotel and retail programs. The 148-metres tower houses the 245-key Waldorf Astoria Xiamen Hotel as well as Grade-A office spaces at lower levels.
Glass and limestone of the façade echoes the elegance of Xiamen:
The hotel’s banquet facilities are placed on the 3rd floor of the 4-storey podium which extended westward to form a linear retail mall with diverse shopping and F&B offerings. The project, close to the airport, enjoying the beautiful scenery of northern Lotus Park, surrounded by low-rise residential and small-scale commercial buildings, is designed to reinforce Paragon International’s well-established hotel portfolio, as well as create a new lifestyle destination for the local residents.
Master Layout Plan:
The tower is strategically located to maximize view towards the northern lotus park and the gorgeous city skyline on its south. The retail and hotel entrances are set along the north frontage to welcome visitors from the main road and nearby metro stations. A block of office parks are placed at the southern end of site with an introverted design facing the inner courtyard.

The façade of the building is chiefly composed of glass and limestone. The upright tower is designed with a delicate transparent glass curtain-wall that contrasts nicely with the solid podium while complimenting the serene pond in the adjacent Lotus Garden.

The podium is stone-clad and elongated, supporting the tower above with a sturdy, rock-like outline. It is punctuated by glass boxes and open terraces for added dimension into the otherwise flat volume, creating a buoyant atmosphere. The interaction between the two materials echoes the elegance of Xiamen as well as produces a modern and vivid image.
The double height atrium in the hotel lobby is designed to align with the hotel’s prestigious reputation and create a sense of grandeur for incoming guests. Applied through the hotel’s exterior and interior design, bronze metal decoration is adopted to produce a personalized luxury environment.

The design language is applied throughout the hotel’s interiors, including the podium rooftop where views from the outdoor pool deck and Xiamen’s tropical landscape are filtered in through the boutique bar’s folding wood doors. This idea enhanced the interaction of experience between indoor and outdoor space.

The circulation network is planned thoughtfully with routes delineated for different users. Banquet goers and hotel VIPs can access the venue and lobby respectively via the shorter route directly from the main road, while the path for retail pedestrians is windier by comparison which offers more opportunity to wander along the array of storefronts. The shopfronts on the ground level of the podium is connected intimately with the outdoor pedestrian street through extensive use of folding doors.

An “absent” house on a slope
By using the sloped terrain to hide the project, the city council of Mont-de-l’Enclus in Belgium was convinced by Studio Okami Architects to step away from the traditional regulations (sloping roof, predefined window sizes, local brick), allowing the client his dream for infinite views over the valley. Within the building precinct the terrain was elevated, folded open, to allow for a 273sqm single floor villa to be hidden in plain sight.
Deep inside the slope a patio provides the cave-like bedrooms with air, light and tempered vistas throughout. Everyday living takes place in a loft-like space, with ceiling to floor windows painting the magnificent landscape to the beholders eye.
The flexibility of the space is anchored by the fire place and a kitchen island which is presented as a piece of oversized furniture. Unobstructed circulation paths outside and in, allow for the habitants to experience the space and its surroundings while defined by the colonnade making the slope readable from every angle.
The materials have been carefully matched to harmonize in to a powerful yet tranquil composition, a tactile ton-sur-ton color scheme is accentuated by the ever changing greenery of the plot.

Lost Lineage — The Faceless (Tortured Ones)
Pain is one of the great motivators in human history. Make someone uncomfortable and they will constantly strive to improve their position. Light a fire under anything living and it will instantly run, jump, crawl, climb, do whatever it can do to get away. The Faceless may have been among the worst experiments conducted in the name of warfare, but within their statuesque countenance they bear pain with the stoicism of sheer rock.
As much as constant agony is certainly something that can drive a soul deeper and deeper into Torment, it is also eternal and incontrovertible proof you are alive. The singing of nerves gives proof to a Promethean’s place among humanity, a common feeling which is in great supply in the trenches of the Western Front.
The Faceless seem outwardly to be the very model of calm and placid contemplation. Inside, they are eternally burning and experiencing the death throes of thousands of undying nerves. This constant grief drives the Faceless to seek solitude, even from each other. Faceless tend to avoid throngs where they can, preferring to observe humanity’s path in unobstructed contemplation. They are obsessed with understanding the reason for their suffering through understanding the suffering of others. While this can express itself in a Tortured One being moved by those who show selflessness and courage in the face of personal agony, it can also drive them to inflict great pain upon others in search of surcease to their constant suffering.
Their name is well earned as the Faceless’ features are those of stern, mud-golems. Their outward shell is hardened and blackened mud which cakes the internal tangle of limbs constantly burning in a putrid, self-contained vat of deadly chemicals. They are hulking and square in stature. The eyes of a Tortured One are deep set holes that they have personally bored into the cracked lines of their faces during their agonizing creation with their thick fingers, their mouths are thin, fissured slits that are painful to move. They can show no expression as their hardened surface does not lend itself to great movements of the face, they cover this up by donning large gas masks that cover their entire head, giving them their title.
The first Faceless was brought into being by accident. A lightning storm in France struck the ground where a mass of bodies, killed by chlorine gas, lay buried in the mud. The resulting reaction caused vaguely human shapes to rise, roaring in agony, from the ground. Those who witnessed it whispered among their ranks and word soon reached their superiors of the Entente and Central Powers alike. While the officers dismissed these tales as the rantings of fear-addled minds, Mortal alchemists working in the research and development labs of both sides pushed for these techniques to be refined and used, creating an army of new soldiers to take the place of those who lay dismembered on the scarred earth, their bodies killed by the gas, blown apart by shelling and churned among the mud.
By slowing the circulation of gas masks to front line troops, the alchemists ensure an ample supply of sites to create the Faceless and bolster their ranks. The alarming convergence of death and chemicals lead to staggering numbers of these Faceless appearing in even greater numbers than other Lineages. Their numbers trigger Firestorms across the various battlefields, and though some are seen as unnatural instances of devastation, most are assumed to be part and parcel of the Great War’s seemingly endless bombardment of artillery fire and chemical death.
The first of the Faceless are deployed to the trenches in Ypres where they had fallen. As more are created, they appear on various fronts. Sometimes, Faceless are deployed on opposite sides of the same battle line and tales circulate of hulking figures storming across no-man’s-land, able to withstand huge amounts of fire without stopping their maddening charge. Only artillery and highly concentrated fire can stop them in their tracks.
Though they do not often speak, Tortured Ones are often fluent in multiple languages, from English, French, and German to Algerian and Hindi. To the eyes of a shell-shocked soldier, they appear to be immensely large, dirt caked men, but the more inquisitive immediately realise that these Created are not one of them, leading the Faceless to regularly move from trench to trench to avoid difficult questions, often switching sides to try their luck elsewhere. What the Faceless know for sure is that this is the one place where they can roam with any sort of freedom. In a city or small village, they would be instantly recognizable.
Faceless regularly possess ragged scraps of uniforms of both sides that they mend into a hodge-podge covering.  As one of the few beings able to move between the opposing trenches of the war, they can be turned to the purpose of spying or spreading rumor and misinformation among an enemy trench, a feat that either side could benefit from.
Given their multiple perspectives, they often suffer from confused loyalties, it is not uncommon for German and Austrian dead to mingle with British and French in the mud of the Western Front. In the dirt, all are equal. Their differing points of view can give Faceless a bizarre and unique perspective on their plight, though they may not deign to share it with their comrades in the trench.
Faceless have a special disdain towards Frankensteins. Not so strong as a hatred, just a general distaste. Their prattle of suffering and their misfit, outcast state would wrinkle the noses of most Faceless if they bore noses beneath their masks. Not only do most of them have trouble relating to anyone who simply talks so much about themselves, the idea that so many of the Wretched chose to be here of their own volition, seeking some sort of bloody awakening or epiphany is anathema to their pain. What the Frankensteins truly suffer, so far as the Faceless are concerned, is an ugliness in scarring that dominates their life. This is not nobility, but narcissism.
Of all Created, they identify most closely with the Tammuz, particularly as many of their number may have been dug out of their birthing mud by the shovels of Tammuz engineers. The Faceless have a strange respect for people who quietly get on with their job and lack pretention. The Tammuz do not assign station and rank upon themselves, they find their truth in labor and a hard day’s work. They appreciate the simple beauty of a job well done. When a team of Tammuz are lengthening a trench or laying barbed wire, you will often find a Faceless watching over them. It is not clear if they have taken to guard them or if they simply find a strange catharsis in their toil.
Creations
The Mascot
Filthy Hamish is a regimental mascot. He has been adopted by the men of the 1st Lanark Militia due to saving their captain’s life simply by walking in front of him during an attempted advance. The men huddled behind him all the way back to the trench.
“He’s so dirty the bullets can’t pierce him!” they joke. What they don’t know is he’s the one who keeps ripping the legs, wings and heads off of the messenger pigeons sent to their trench. He doesn’t say much, but he watches the other lads very closely.
The Carer
Fraulein Marta is the den mother of her dug-out. She was found by the German Army in the remains of a medical outpost. Some of the men say they didn’t have the heart to shoot her, others say shooting her didn’t work. One oversized uniform and pickelhaube helm custom made by Oberjager Christoph Feldstein was enough to secure her place as an enlisted man. She has been known to treat the wounded though her care can often be a bit rough.
The Refugee
After wandering from the field, Grand Pierre joined a refugee train heading west. His observation of the families dispossessed from lands they cultivated for generations unnerved the others at first, but he was invaluable in warding off the vultures who preyed on the homeless and starving people fleeing the French countryside. After helping a family pull their dead child from the ruin of their farmhouse, he not only carved out a burial site himself but stood vigil during the modest ceremony the poor girl could be afforded. The family noticed him shedding yellow tears, which escaped from his gas mask and sizzled and smoked on the exposed, blackened mud of his chest.
The Homesick
Rajesh is not sure where he’s supposed to be, but it isn’t here. A voice in his head is calling him to head east; east through the German line and off to a home he only understands from flashes in his mind and memory of a language he doesn’t remember learning. He gathers a small team of men and women and listens to their stories of home. The blistering, humid summers of India. He feels he remembers with clarity his muddy flesh baking in the midday sun as he tended to a small herd of animals, one of whom could fit inside his hand. What he remembers most of all is the peace of it all. He promises to return these people home safely and concocts a plan to do it. They can call it desertion all they like. What are they fighting for if not to save home from this horror? And what is home without these people in it?
The Equestrian
Horses seem to have lost their place in war. Now they don’t carry soldiers, they carry crates. Phyllis on the other hand is more than capable of carrying horses. She sees those poor beasts left to die in craters. Discarded by their owners, shot even. She sees herself in the tragicomic reflections cast by their long, humorless faces. She sees a beast of burden staring back at her from every deep puddle. The others of her kind carry supplies now. They dig trenches and soak up fire. How long will it be before their masters ride them into battle? Well, all she can do is try to save something from this mess and it seems to her that the horses are the only innocents in this field.
Humour: Chlorine. The humour of the Faceless guarantees them internal torment as much as their exterior ensures they can never fully express that suffering. It imbues them with inner fury and almost insane, thoughtless bravery but can make them prone to acts of self-sacrifice. The fastest way to cease their torture is to end their existence after all. While this is one of the traits that ensures their Lineage’s temporary nature, it is not the only one. Their pain drives them to seek out the focus of their Pilgrimage with incredible, single minded dedication.
As much as their lack of physical expression makes them seem almost emotionless as statues, the internal burning of their humour also gives them a brooding, gruff aspect. Most Tortured Ones speak only when spoken to or, even then, at the uttermost end of need. They use words sparingly but observe and contemplate.
Their large size and formidable strength and toughness makes them physically intimidating and their rivals often shrink from them when confronted. Even the hardiest of Uratha would think twice before rushing headlong at a Tortured One without knowing what he was or what he might do. Most of the time, their quiet, brooding nature sees them easily confused for large, dirty soldiers. It is when they are found among the civilian population they truly stand out.
Bestowments: Living Wall, Chem-Shell
Faceless Bestowments
Living Wall: Your outer layer is hardened like stone and both bullets and blades alike ricochet off of your hide. Any that penetrate often simply become lodged within as part of your monstrous structure. If rolling dice to defend or evade attacks from simple melee weapons or firearms, the Faceless may reroll any failed dice, but must accept the result of the second roll.
Chem Shell: Channeling their inner rage, the Faceless can sacrifice part of themselves to create a hardened, explosive shell, fused with Pyros and deadly chemicals. The Faceless spends 1 Pyros and loses 1 Health level as it uses part of its own body to create this shell. It can then project the shell to a point it can see up to 100 feet away and detonate it. Alternatively, it can be placed somewhere like a conventional explosive. The blast destroys objects and structures caught within it and inflicts 10 aggravated damage on anyone within a 20ft radius. Anyone who survives the blast suffers from the Poisoned Tilt (see Chronicles of Darkness p. 286).

Waterloo Residence by APPAREIL Architecture
For this project, the APPAREIL Architecture team received the mandate to design an extension for a family home and renovate its shared spaces. Heeding a desire for harmony between the new intervention and the pre-existing architecture, the result inscribes itself into a clean aesthetic with Nordic influences.
The Ville Mont-Royal house contained an out-of-date sunroom, which was available for use during only one season. Working in close collaboration with the owners, APPAREIL Architecture designed a new annex which allows optimization of natural light and an improvement of living spaces’ quality.
The project’s initial phase was to develop an extension to the house which acted as a “luminous box”. The openings were maximized using full-height windows highlighting the facade’s orientation. Inside, the kitchen was redesigned to foster dialogue between old and new elements. Responding to the owners’ wish to preserve the dark tinted floors, the integrated materials are more luminous and neutral. The smooth cupboards with no visible hardware reinforce the space’s soberness. In contrast with this immaculate white environment, a central wooden module stands out by its surface textured with wooden slats. This central piece harmonizes the old and new components of the space. Visible from all rooms, it becomes the ground floor’s focal point. It directs the interior path towards the luminous annex, which opens onto the backyard. Made of walnut, the element brings a touch of warmth and harmonizes with the existing wooden floor. It allows for all essentials to be concealed by acting both as a dish cabinet and pantry. The space is thus unobstructed and seems more spacious.
The intervention further extends throughout the ground floor to open the space and create a welcoming relationship between the rooms. By opening up the ground floor, the configuration facilitates fluid circulation while offering a link to the outdoors. Both inside and outside, this project by APPAREIL Architecture weds modernity and functionality while preserving the original lodging’s inviting spirit.

Sightline
A sightline (also sight line), visual axis or line of sight is an imaginary line between a viewer/observer/spectator's eye(s) and a subject of interest. The term "line" typically presumes that the light by which the observed object is seen travels as a straight ray, which is sometimes not the case as light can take a curved/angulated path when reflected from a mirror, refracted by a lens or density changes in the traversed media, or deflected by a gravitational field. The subject may be any definable object taken note of or to be taken note of by the observer, but some fields of study feature specific targets, such as vessels in navigation, marker flags or natural features in surveying, celestial objects in astronomy, and so on. To have optimal observational outcome, it is preferable to have a completely unobstructed sightline.
In the design of civic structures, such as a stage, arena, or monument, future sightlines are a particularly important consideration. They determine the configuration of such items as theater and stadium design, road junction layout and urban planning. In cities such as London, construction within sightlines is restricted to protect the key views of famous landmarks[1]
Subjects that have a line of sight with one another are said to be intervisible, where intervisibility is the ability of viewers at separate places to see each other without any landform blocking their view.

To ensure this designers utilize the C-value, defined as the vertical distance from a spectator's eyes to sightline of the spectator directly behind. The C-value is determined in part by the rake, that is, the upward slope of the seating.[2]
The stadium bowl rake if based on consistent C-values will follow half of a parabola in section. The curvature will be greatest closest to the pitch and will become an increasingly flatter curve as it moves to the upper rows. As a general rule the rake or curve of the seating bowl will flatten as the first row of seats move away from the side-line for a constant C-value. It is impractical to make different step heights for every single row. In practice the riser height is the same for a set of 4 or 5 rows at the bottom of the bowl with the number of rows in each same height set increasing for higher up rows. The uppermost tier could have only 2 or even 1 different step heights.
It is the lowest rows of seats that are the most sensitive to the impact of the C-value because of the very flat view angle to the touch line. The higher seats can have a reduced C-value without impacting as seriously on the clear view of the field of play.

Sightline C-Value equations derived by right triangle proportional theorem and tangent function in different formats. The existing sightline formula in the Green Guide (Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds) solved the C-Value at the wrong location (see image).The C-Value Formula C=D(N+R)/(D+T) - R circulating on the internet that is referenced by a number of seating manufactures and many computational design tutorials such as Grasshopper has minor flaws. The formula can be traced back to the sightline section of the Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds, also known as Green Guide. It is an United Kingdom Government-funded guidance book on spectator safety at sports grounds. On Page 109 Green Guide Fifth Edition, the graphic reference does show the C-Value location correctly. It is the vertical distance between the front person eye level and the sightline generated from the Viewer behind. However, the existing formula was derived by solving the C-Value on the wrong person, the Viewer behind. Computational software users should draw a 2D bowl profile and do hand calculations to verify the difference between the Green Guide formula and the new equations highlighted in yellow.
C-Value Equation Derivation         Deriving the equations first hand will help the users understand the geometry and math relationship behind. Below is a step-by-step procedure of C-Value equations assumption, definitions, and derivation based on the basic trigonometry principles of Triangle Proportionality Theorem and Tangent Function. The equations are not limited in the formats highlighted in the reference graphics. I encourage the computational designers and architects to derive the equation from the basic math principles in order to understand the geometry and equation relationship thoroughly.

C-Value equation derivation by right triangle proportional theorem. The C-Value is a vertical distance measured in inches (in) or millimeter (mm) that represents the limit of clearance a person (Spectator) is able to look over another person sitting at front (Sightline Blocker). The unit used must be consistent throughout the calculation. One important assumption is the C-Value above the person sitting at front (Sightline Blocker) eye level belongs to the person sitting behind (Spectator). The same principle also can be applied on standing spectators.

Sightlines in theatres

Sightline criteria in theaters can include: the "isacoustic curve"[3][4][5] defined by John Scott Russell in 1838 and applied at the Auditorium Building in Chicago and the Emery Theatre in Cincinnati; alternate row sightlines where each patron sees between the heads of patrons in the row in front and over the heads of patrons in the second row in front; next row sightlines where each patron sees over the heads of patrons in the row immediately in front; and basic considerations like pointing the chairs more or less toward the performance, being able to see the conductor in the pit, being able to see other patrons, being able to see actors on elevated scenery, and not being obstructed by a wall, railing, column, ceiling overhang, loudspeaker cluster, or any other obstruction. The design of sightlines includes considerations of how much of the stage and scenery each patron can see. For example, can each patron see the top of the scenery or not, and can each patron see the whole stage floor or not? Design of sightlines is divided into two related exercises, vertical sightlines and horizontal sightlines. Design of proper sightlines includes resolving both technical and aesthetic issues. At issue is the emotional response of the audience: whether a performer can hold the audience's attention or not; whether the patron feels they had a "good" seat and their ticket was fairly priced or not; whether the audience gets the emotional impact of the performance or not; and whether the patron wants to come back and see another performance in that theater or not. Building codes restrict the maximum and minimum rise per row, limit the minimum width per row, limit the maximum deviation in the size of steps from row to row to achieve the curvature of the rake, and limit other aspects of sightline design.

It is recommended that a spectator's eye height must not be lower than 800 mm above the stage.[9] However, in larger theatres it is acceptable to locate the eye height of the first row on the level of the stage.
Sightlines in stadiums The spectator view in modern stadia is optimised very carefully to balance the uninterrupted clear view to the field for every seat whilst not making the seating terraces any higher than necessary to satisfy structure, cost and safety considerations.

C-values are improved with a steeper slope or moving the seating rows away from the focus point. Inadequate views result in spectators jumping up for a better view during exciting play. This is an annoyance to others and can lead to fights and in the context of large crowds this can be a serious safety threat. The maximum step height between terraces or rows is usually limited to 540mm. If this is exceeded then a continuous guardrail is required as protection against falling. Even with a 540mm terrace step many spectators become uncomfortable and start to feel the impact of vertigo. An ideal maximum terrace step height that will avoid most people feeling insecure is 450mm.
Sightlines in plan
The C-value is the vertical distance from the spectator eye to where it intersects the sightline of the spectator directly behind.
The illustration indicates the partially obstructed view of the front row spectators looking at the far corner flag of the adjacent touchline. One eye can see the action on the field whilst vision to the second eye is blocked. The C-Value considers the sightlines in the vertical plane. The sightlines in the horizontal plane need to be considered for the front row spectators in the instance where they look acutely sideways, typically adjacent far end corner flag. At the extreme end of the front row, spectators could have their view from one of their eyes blocked by the head of the adjacent spectator. During exciting play this can lead to spectators jumping up out of their seats to get a better view. A clear view for both eyes for all front row spectators can be achieved by the use of curved stands in plan. It can also be argued that with play that is already a long distance away a better view of the game is available on the big video screen.
Focus point The touch-line (or side-line) and the goal-line are considered the C-Value focus point in Stadia.
Obstructed view seats There should be a clear view of the playing field from all seats. Roof supports should be eliminated entirely from the seating area. In calculating the sight lines it should be appreciated that advertising boards of 90–100 cm in height may be erected around the field at a distance of five metres from the touch lines and five metres behind the centre of the goal lines. FIFA ticketing carry out an assessment of all seats and those seats that have an obstructed view of the game will be classed obstructed view seats and will not be sold. Quite often these are the first few seats adjacent to the pitch with their view partially blocked by the advertising hoardings. This is an especially big problem with football stadiums that have running tracks around them. These seats are either covered with a fabric and not occupied during the game or the tickets are issued to non-paying spectators.

In 2011, Yeonhee Kim and Ghang Lee presented an algorithm to derive actual sight area in the early design stage of theater without producing a 3D model.[10] The algorithm uses plan and cross sectional drawings to analyze view of audiences to resolve to address errors of the "sight area rate" algorithm which does not account for sightlines being blocked by the front-row seats in a theater.[10]

The Field Guide to Urban Plazas
SWA Group have produced a revised study of behavioral trends observed in the use of public space. The Guardian have helpfully aggregated some of their work, which I’m going to re-post here for future reference.

This was observed in a range of plazas, including those with seating and planting distributed evenly throughout the space. Generally, the capacity along the edge reached 50%-75% before people began migrating into the middle

Views of the city attracted people, even if comfort was compromised or the site not easily accessible. People were drawn to views in both highly trafficked tourist areas and areas with less traffic. In both types of spaces, people tended to go straight towards the best view first. Many lingered long enough to take a photo. If seating was available nearby, this often extended their time spent in the space by 10 to 15 minutes. Some people even perched on the backs of benches to get a better view

Pathways with minimal edge variation sped up pedestrian traffic and lowered dwell times in the plazas. People tended to walk faster and stop less frequently in straight pathways through plazas. These pathways were often undifferentiated from their surroundings in terms of hardscape and planting material and had few or no openings to the plaza

People didn’t dissipate evenly throughout the spaces. Schooling was observed in most of the plazas. People were not deterred by crowding or groups of people; rather, people seemed to be attracted to spaces with a medium-to-high density of people over spaces with a lower density

Slightly perched and protected areas were popular. Stationary people tended to go to elevated areas that overlooked the plaza space. The youngest gravitated towards higher perches (at least 3ft), and the middle aged were drawn to slightly raised spaces (under 3ft). Protected perches with canopies and a sense of backing were most popular

Soft material in the sun attracted people to recline. Young plaza users tended to bask in the sun if offered a soft surface such as wood or turf. This was observed in a range of spaces of varying elevation. Most often, people basked in small groups of two-to-four

People seeking privacy chose spurs with good visibility. This was observed in plazas with a varied series of outdoor rooms. Individuals eating alone, on a phone call or reading often found seating outside the main plaza space and off the main circulation routes. Favoured locations tended to have strong backing (with walls, furniture, or planting) and clear views out into the plaza

Younger groups tended to occupy bi-directional areas where they could be part-audience, part-performer. Teenagers occupying the plazas wanted to see what was going on around them and be seen. During their time in the space, they toggled back and forth between these roles. Adjacent circulation increased the popularity of these spaces

People tended to occupy protected, in-between spaces. When given the option, many plaza users gravitated towards liminal plaza zones – seating areas that felt sheltered but were directly adjacent to a more open and exposed area. These types of spaces were very crowded and had long dwell times, often more than 30 minutes per group

Spaces with a sense of backing, where there was less activity behind them, attracted people. This phenomenon was observed in most of the plazas with people wanting protective seating. The backing took many forms – from higher plant material to walls, to construction fences and jersey barriers. People tended to occupy these seating areas over more exposed spaces

People often moved to face the sun. Many young people were observed doing this in the plazas and would seek sunny areas to linger in. In tracking the rays, they often shifted their positions on stationary furniture or even moved to other areas of the plaza in order to stay in the sun

A low element at the edge of an outdoor room attracted people. One well-used subdivision of plazas was an area surrounded by a low element, generally under 4ft. This took the form of planters, jersey barriers, a glass rail, or a mesh rail. Clear sightlines into and out of the space seemed to be important for those using the corral. These subdivisions created refuge islands, allowing people to get away from busy areas but still have views to pedestrians

Fixed areas that offered a choice in seating type, height, material, or personal position had high dwell times. In general, people preferred variety in seating – they tended to occupy spaces that had a range of furniture to choose from. For example, if seating was designed with multiple heights and depths, people used it for sitting on, standing by, lying on,and leaning on

Temporary plaza interventions drew people into the space. Interventions that had a limited lifespan, from one day to an entire season, tended to increase usage of the plaza. These interventions seemed to work better in spaces populated by locals rather than in spaces sought out by visitors

Plazas with wide and open entrances at cross streets or transverse paths facilitated higher flows of people. More people tended to pass into plazas from adjacent public spaces if the edge of the plaza was unobstructed by planting, furniture or walls. The wider the entrance, the greater the flow

People used accessible elements at the edges of plazas to take short breaks. This was observed in many plazas with high flows of pedestrian traffic. Those walking on the edge of plazas took short breaks and lingered if there were elements such as walls or planters to lean on or set their belongings upon. People often did this while waiting – for a bus, for the light to change, or to meet up with a friend

People made furniture out of anything. In most plazas, especially those that were saturated, people got creative when it came to seating and tables. Plaza users sat on many objects not intended for furniture such as peaked curbs, security bollards with flat tops, jersey barriers, and electrical boxes. They also used many types of objects to eat meals off

Large groups of people gravitated towards moveable furniture. In situations where four or more people wanted to sit together, they often bypassed fixed seating, preferring to use moveable or partially moveable seating instead. This type of furniture included fixed seats with moveable pieces that swivelled and transformed. After settling on an area of the plaza to use, the groups typically rearranged the furniture to best fit their needs

Groups of people tended to congregate around objects, even if they were not using them. This phenomenon was observed in most plazas. When three or more people stood or sat together in a group, they often did so around a piece of furniture, low planter, flat-topped bollard, or even a garbage can. The groups represented a range of plaza users, from office workers to tourists
