Good evening friends!

In yesterday’s reading we heard from Matthew 7, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but underneath are ravenous wolves. By their fruits you will know them.” This verse speaks loudly in light of our modern world with a secular drive for acceptance and inclusion of every life style. It warps our ability to see Christ the way he intended, and replaces feelings of goodwill wrapped in areas of destruction. It has lead to the ever-shifting mores of the moment and lead many to the New Atheism movement. Yesterday’s reading prepares us for today’s Solemnity to Peter and Paul. It is a reminder to trust in the beauty and infallibility of the Church. How blessed we are to be saved with the graces, sacraments, and doctrine of the Church. 

“The Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was rescued from the lion's mouth.” - 2 Timothy 4:17

To be pulled down into despair, struggle and false doctrine is one of the most challenging and suffocating experiences I have been through. Like Benaiah, we all have moments where we are pulled into a snowy pit to face a lion head on. We are cold, afraid, and uncertain. We fear for our lives, but we must turn that fear to the Lord, and have strength and continued hope.

“The angel of the Lord will rescue those who fear him.” - Psalms 34:7

Fear can be an attitude of respect, a response of reverence and wonder. 

"Now I know for certain that the Lord sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people had been expecting." - Acts 12:11

It is all in God’s time. Like Paul, we sometimes face struggles, waiting night after night, day after day for things to get better. He encourages us to “finish the race, and keep the faith”. When we keep our heart on the Lord and in this path set out for us by the fathers of the Church, the Lord will truly provide in his graces and glory.  

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." - Matthew 16:18-19

Have you ever had a key fit into a lock, but it wouldn’t turn? We think that if the key fits, surely it should be able to turn and open. We keep trying to jiggle and turn it with what we think will give it the right amount of pressure, but it doesn’t budge. Too often the devil knows how to get us into the lock, and we find ourselves stuck. Stuck in a place that gets us no where. We are similar to a tripod, made up of three legs: mind, body and soul. While the mind and body may go along with Satan for some time, turning that lock, trying to use our wit and strength to open it; one day the feelings of the soul will kick in and it will feel terrible knowing we aren’t using the correct key. There is such a thing as hell on earth, and when the soul finally awakes up and says enough to the devil, the withdrawal pains will be immense. We begin to lose hope. Today we are given hope and reminded that we have been GIVEN THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN! Upon this rock, Peter was entrusted to as the vicar of Christ on earth and Christ binds us to those the laws that open the doors to HEAVEN. Did he just say the keys to heaven? Given to Peter and his appointed succession? Sign me up to walk through that door, for that is the only door we should be striving to enter.  The Church isn’t creating barrier or rules for us, it is giving us the clues and answers to the smoothest path to the Heavenly door we all seek in our hearts.
