That tingling sensation when the waves touch your feet!
Tumblr media
There is something soothing and melodious about the sound of waves. I can spend hours standing at the shore, soaking my feet in water, breathing the salty air, watching the waves roll in, sometime gentle, other time fierce as the breeze teases my hair into a mess. The water may be cold to touch, but always warms up my soul.

here's how armand can still be bengali
why do i think so? no other good reason than i am bengali myself and i want armand to be. (also assad zaman's family is from bangladesh. bengali solidarity!!!)
bengal: the region in south asia comprising present-day bangladesh and the indian states of west bengal, odisha, assam and parts of bihar.
armand said in the season one finale, that takes place in 2022, he is a 514 year old vampire. is it 514 years including or excluding his human years? let's go with including. that means armand would have been born in 1508.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now what was going on in india and bengal in 1508? well, the mughals hadn't come to india yet; it's still about two decades before babur makes his way here. delhi was under the rule of the lodi dynasty, the delhi sultanate was in its dying days. most of north india, mainly uttar pradesh and bihar was under the jaunpur sultanate. bengal was still it's own independent kingdom, called the bengal sultanate. alauddin hussain shah had just seized power and become the sultan of bengal in 1494, beginning the hussain shahi dynasty (they ruled in bengal till 1538 when the mughals captured the region).
india as a country did not exist yet. even it's conception would be a few centuries away still. the subcontinent was a collection of big and small kingdoms and sultanates, constantly warring amongst themselves, some ruled by hindu rulers others by muslims, each with their own distinct histories and cultures. bengal was one of the most prosperous and thriving among them. the bangla language and bengali culture was just beginning to develop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
vasco da gama had arrived in india in 1498, landing at kozhikode on the malabar coast. this began the arrival of the portugese in india, and soon other european colonialists followed. they soon set up their capital in goa, built forts all along the western coast and established trade through obtaining licenses and exclusive permits from local rulers. they first made their way to the bay of bengal region around 1516, with the first portugese representative- a guy called joao coelho- coming to chittagong (present day bangladesh). the first factory was set up in chittagong the next year.
the portugese traded in spices and cotton and fruits and muslin and also slaves. the european indian ocean slave trade began with the coming of the portugese in the early 16th century. slavery in south asian societies had obviously existed long before, and it was a deeply complex and diverse system of dependency and regimes of slavery. slavery of youth and children was also pretty prevalent: it would not be uncommon for poor, farming families to sell away themselves or their children to zamindars (landlords) and colonial overlords in desperation. there were many, many cases of young children being forced to get onboard ships where they'd be held agains their will and taken to europe, the americas or south-east asia. goa and lisbon were the two cities that linked the movement of goods and people between the indian and atlantic oceans, but goa wasn't the only place where enslaved children were traded in portugese india nor lisbon the only european they were taken to.
one of those kids might as well have been arun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i know the brief glimpse at the talamasca files showed armand's origin to be in delhi but in this particular scene he clearly says that he was sent *to* delhi, thinking he was going to work on a merchant boat.
this is just a theory i have btw. armand could've been from maharastra or the deccan as well idk. anyway.
armand is a monster, a vicious, villanious creature of unfathomable powers and ferocity. but he is also so deeply tragic. he had been forcibly torn away from his people and his land. he has no memory of his family or his humanity. he has lived for over half a millenium. the india he might've known hasn't existed for centuries, and he never got to know the one that exists today. the bangla he might've spoken no one remembers anymore. he has nothing left of the human he was except that name.
further readings (STRONGLY SUGGESTED!!!):

For those who don't know, Rajo (ରଜ) is an Indian festival native to the state of Odisha. This is a 3-day long festival, wherein we celebrate the menstruation of Mother Earth. It's a festival meant exclusively for girls (though boys aren't barred from enjoying it too). We dress-up, play on swings, and eat delicious pithas... It's heaven ❤️😌

A goodbye needed
From being born in Hyderabad to living in the northern part of India, that is Gurgaon and then the Western side, Maharashtra to Vishakhapatnam in the south and finally in the eastern states of Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Odisha, I do get to say that I covered eighteen years of my life in the four main directions of India. But my favourite city has and will always be Kolkata.
To be honest, my brother desperately wanted to live in Kolkata because of Eden Gardens in our GK book. I wasn't that interested until I arrived in Kolkata in 2016 to appear for the written test in my school. The exam went well and so did the interview. I remember my father lived in a small bachelor's one room apartment in Ruby Park. My eleven year old eyes were stunned as they took in the grandeur of the old buildings from the British era to the modern metros and malls of Kolkata. When I came back to Raipur, all I knew was Kolkata would be life changing for me.
And in 2017, I did come home. To Kolkata. A small roadside apartment facing a canal where you don't have crystal clear water but drainage water. Somehow the water wasn't stinky until the arrival of the monsoon showers. I lived there from 2017 to 2020. I was supposed to stay there until 2022 but fate had other plans but that's a story for another day.
I always call Kolkata home even though I am from Odisha. It was the only city that embraced all shades of me. I spent the first two years of my teenage there. The damp roads leading to my apartment have heard my songs above sweet love and true friendship. On quiet midnights, my tiny balcony knew the whispers of my soul, and the questions it asked about fate and the world. The monsoon rainfall told me how to appreciate nature and beauty. I learnt to dance with storms, and dream of stories that I now write and desperately wish to be a part of.
I met a teacher who told me in a tone akin to a whisper in front of the class that I am like a small pandora box, hidden from view but having the most wonderful and beautiful things to offer the world. The next month I danced for a school event and God since then I never looked back. Kolkata connected my soul to literature and culture.
I am no longer in Kolkata but each time my calendar notifies Rabindranath Thakur's jayanti, my heart goes to the old tunes of Rabindra sangeet; the beauty and tenderness of his songs that captured my heart and caused me to spill some of my poetry in the last page of my rough notebook.
I visited kolkata again in December 2021 after first term examinations of class twelve. My connection with kolkata broke like a plant uprooted from its soil. It felt as if I had been banished from home. All the months that passed, and all the seasons that changed showed me memories and dreams of what could have been in kolkata. But when I visited kolkata, I saw how some things had changed.
My home appeared....... different? I always say that my young soul blossomed in Kolkata. The same soul turned sad at the emotion that the city showed me. Perhaps that's how growing up is. To see that things around you change, people, roads, hearts everything but somewhere there still lies a calling that says, 'hey, I know things are different. But I am still here. Look at me, embrace the new me. Embrace yourself. You are changing too.'
Where it once used to be wonder, nostalgia filled my heart as I met my friends after two years. I passed through my apartment again and smiled at the balcony, my small corner for solitude. I saw a few towels hanging there.
Going back from Kolkata felt a little sad. I could not accept the change. I had been uprooted from my roots, and when I come back I see new flowers springing up. Without me?
Then after a year, I visited Kolkata again in July 2023. I had grown so had the city. When I passed by the same British era buildings and Howrah bridge, the same wonder struck my soul. I saw a few flowers growing on the pathway, getting their nourishment from the July showers. The empty space in my heart too was filled with flowers. My friends who are now in their respective colleges, doing their own things with their own friend circles now but somehow we come together. Just like old days before.
Home is always home no matter how far you go or how long you stay away from it. Home will always welcome you back. The fragrance of wet earth filled my soul with a warm blanket, as if telling me that all this while, I waited for you. I am different but I am still your friend.
Era sukher laagi chahe prem, prem mele na.
Shudhu sukh chole jaye emoni mayar cholona
This song will always remind me of Kolkata, the warm monsoon nights that were filled with a longing of love, friendship and magic. It will take me back to dreams and whispers of a fantasy that my heart still believes in that I would one day bring forth the wonder and beauty of my Self to the world. It will remind me that there must be tender days to be spent in reading poetry on a cool evening.
The day I boarded the train to Durgapur, my heart hummed the tune of Era Sukher Lagi from Choker Bali. As the train left the station, I waved at my young self through the window. It was farewell. I would come home later for my dance work, a thread that shall tie me to this wonderful city forever but I would never come home this way ever again and for the first time I was happy. And perhaps to witness an end to a heartwarming journey of nostalgia, acceptance to change and farewell, the clouds showered rainfall against the window just like the cool monsoon nights years ago.
All was well....

Indian Elections: The Campaign and how much it worked (Part 1)
Since the results are out, let's talk about it (as if we haven't been doing it since the last few hours) properly.
First of all, Uttar Pradesh voters, you people are betrayers. I'm not saying it, BJP & its supporters are. But seriously, Samajvadi Party's campaign for this year was definitely strong. Yogi really thought that it's going to be a piece of cake didn't he. Thank you voters for showing them the ground reality. Ayodhya, Amethi, Raebareli, the trinity of my joy.
Rajasthan. Yes, BJP won here with 14 seats. But lost 10 seats. Congress really shone on its own here, gaining 8 seats when in the last election, it was on the zero mark. Sachin Pilot and that man alone worked on Rajasthan. Honestly they need to put him front and center.
Madhya Pradesh is 100% a well-deserved BJP sweep. Let's not forget that it's not the Modi factor that worked here, it was Shivraj Singh Chauhan. That man worked his ass off during Vidhaan Sabha campaign last year and it really paid off in Lok Sabha. (God, I still remember women crying when he didn't become the Chief Minister).
I guess it was tough for West Bengal voters, no? I'm not much familiar Bengal politics but from what I've heard, they had to choose between two evils. Still, Didi gets 29 out of 42 seats, leaving BJP and Congress on the 6 and 1 mark respectively.
Lmao, they fucked up in Bihar. I can rant for hours about this. The seat distribution was already messed up, but Nitish Babu leaving put the nail in the coffin. BJP and JD(U) won 12 seats each, with RJD and Congress winning 4 and 3 respectively. Left also got 2 or 3 seats. I'm glad Pappu Yadav (on Purniya seat) won nirdaliye. Well deserved.
As for Odisha, I guess people have lost all the hopes in Naveen Patnaik, because BJD remained on zero, BJP getting all of its seats (20). Congress won 1 seat here.
I don't have much to say about Delhi. It's a BJP sweep. I guess AAP didn't get to campaign much since Arvind Kejriwal was literally put in jail? I'm still salty that Kanhaiya Kumar lost.
That's all for now, rest in the next part.

I am really irritated with people who behave as the guardians of our religion on social media.
I just saw a young odia girl getting ganged up on Instagram in the comment section of a Durga Puja reel because she said that we, Odia, offer fish to the Durga Maa as prasad.
These so called guardians need to understand that Indian culture is not limited to North India. There are 28 states in India and each have their own unique identity and rituals. And if they want to respect the Indian culture, they need to respect them all, not just what suits their agenda.
Navratri may be pure vegetarian festival in North Indian states. (But I am sure some rituals and traditions may differ among those states or within a single state too.) In Odisha, Durga Puja isn't a strictly vegetarian festival. Infact, fish is considered subha (good fortune) in our culture and often times is offered to Goddess as prasad and is even used in marriages or other ceremonies as an important gift from bride's side to groom's side.
When my brother got married, my sister in law brought fish alongwith different sweets, banana tree and coconut tree for good fortune with her.
So, don't tell me or any Odia that we are insulting the term 'prasad' by calling the fish a 'prasad' because in our culture it is a 'prasad'. It may not be in your culture and that's absolutely fine. But that doesn't give you right to disrespect my culture. This kind of behaviour doesn't show your piety or devotion, but only show your narrow-mindedness and ignorance about diversity in Indian culture. I hope you try to learn about different culture and religion before giving ignorant and disrespectful remarks against anyone or acting as a cultural police.
Sorry, for the long rant, but the ignorant remarks and insults really enraged me.

Oh, I ate "panipuri" tonight. Also called fuchka, golgappa, or gupchup... this is a ridiculous food. It's ridiculous because it is so ridiculously delicious. But also, whoever came up with the idea of taking a delicate crispy semolina sphere, filling it with ingredients, and THEN pouring a tasty liquid inside - forcing the diner to eat it in one bite quickly before the whole thing dissolves and breaks apart?
See also soup dumplings, finger food that's incredibly sticky (like wings), any dish with fried shrimp in it that still has the tails on, artichokes, crawfish, periwinkle snails, crab meat, pomegranates, steamed clams in a red sauce, and edamame. All food that is delicious, but way too difficult to eat.*

Essential Basic Health Check-Up Tests in Bhubaneswar: What You Need to Know
Staying healthy has become more important than ever in today’s fast-paced world. Regular health check-ups are a simple way to keep an eye on your well-being and detect potential issues before they become major problems. If you live in Bhubaneswar or anywhere in Odisha, you're in luck! The availability of basic health check-up packages makes it easy to monitor your health regularly. This guide will walk you through the essential tests included in these packages, their benefits, and how to choose the best health test package at home in Odisha.
Why Regular Health Check-Ups Are Essential
Before diving into the specifics of basic health check-up packages in Bhubaneswar, it’s important to understand why regular health check-ups are crucial. These check-ups serve as a preventive measure, helping detect underlying conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or cholesterol imbalances early. They also allow doctors to recommend lifestyle changes or treatments to avoid serious health complications down the line.
More than just a way to catch issues, health check-ups are an opportunity to understand your body better. Whether you’re in your 20s or 60s, there are specific health markers that need to be monitored, and a well-rounded health check-up package can cover these.
What Is Included in a Basic Health Check-Up Test in Bhubaneswar?
Basic health check-up tests in Bhubaneswar typically cover the essential screenings needed to give you an overall picture of your health. Here are the most common tests included in these packages:
1. Complete Blood Count (CBC)
The CBC test measures different components of your blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. This test is critical for detecting infections, anemia, and other blood disorders. A CBC test can provide key insights into your overall health.
2. Blood Sugar Levels
Monitoring your blood sugar is crucial for catching early signs of diabetes. The fasting blood sugar test or HbA1c test helps assess your glucose levels over time. If you’re at risk for diabetes, regular checks can help you manage it effectively.
3. Lipid Profile
This test measures cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood, helping to evaluate your heart health. High cholesterol levels can lead to heart disease, strokes, or clogged arteries. A lipid profile helps you know if you need to adjust your diet or take medication to lower cholesterol levels.
4. Liver Function Tests
The liver plays a critical role in filtering toxins from your blood, producing proteins, and aiding digestion. Liver function tests measure enzymes and proteins in the blood to assess how well your liver is performing. If you have a history of alcohol use, obesity, or liver diseases, this test is a must.
5. Kidney Function Tests
Your kidneys help regulate the balance of fluids and electrolytes in your body while also filtering waste. A basic health check-up will usually include kidney function tests like creatinine and urea levels, which help determine if your kidneys are working properly.
6. Thyroid Function Test
The thyroid regulates several bodily functions, including metabolism, growth, and development. An imbalance in thyroid hormones can lead to symptoms like weight gain, fatigue, and mood changes. A thyroid test measures hormone levels to check if your thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism).
7. Urine Test
A routine urinalysis checks for various substances, like proteins or glucose, that may indicate kidney issues, infections, or even diabetes. It’s an important part of any health check-up package to rule out urinary tract infections and other conditions.
8. ECG (Electrocardiogram)
An ECG records the electrical activity of your heart. If you have a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or symptoms like chest pain, an ECG is a valuable tool for detecting heart problems.
9. Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 Tests
Vitamins play a crucial role in maintaining bone health, immune function, and overall energy levels. Low levels of Vitamin D or B12 can lead to a range of issues, from fatigue to weak bones. Checking these levels ensures that you're not missing out on essential nutrients.
How Often Should You Get a Health Check-Up?
How often you need a health check-up depends on several factors, including your age, family medical history, and lifestyle choices. For most healthy adults, an annual or biennial health check-up is sufficient. However, if you have pre-existing conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, more frequent check-ups might be necessary.
For younger individuals, once every two years is usually recommended unless specific health issues arise. For those above the age of 40, annual check-ups become more critical due to the increased risk of health complications like heart disease or diabetes.
Choosing the Right Health Check-Up Test Packages in Odisha
With so many health check-up test packages in Odisha available, it can be overwhelming to decide which one is right for you. Here are a few tips to help you make the right choice:
1. Understand Your Needs
Are you looking for a basic check-up or something more comprehensive? If you’re under 40 and generally healthy, a basic health check-up package may suffice. However, if you have risk factors like a family history of heart disease or diabetes, consider opting for a more extensive package that includes tests like ECG, chest X-rays, and more detailed blood work.
2. Look for Accredited Centers
Ensure that the diagnostic center you choose is accredited and reputable. In Bhubaneswar, many centers offer health test packages at home in Odisha, allowing you to get tested from the comfort of your own home. Make sure that the lab follows proper protocols for testing and that their equipment is up to date.
3. Compare Prices and Services
Not all health check-up packages are priced the same. It’s wise to compare the services included in each package and their costs. Some centers offer additional consultations with a physician or dietician as part of the package, which can add value to your investment.
4. Home Collection Services
With today’s busy schedules, the convenience of health test packages at home in Odisha is a game-changer. Many diagnostic centers now offer this service, where trained professionals collect samples from your home, eliminating the need to visit a clinic. This is especially helpful for elderly individuals or those with mobility issues.
The Future of Health Check-Ups: Moving Toward Personalized Care
The world of health check-ups is evolving. With advancements in technology, we're moving toward more personalized healthcare, where check-ups can be customized based on your genetic profile, lifestyle, and specific health risks.
In Bhubaneswar and across Odisha, the trend is shifting toward more accessible, personalized health services, and diagnostic centers are responding by offering tailored health check-up packages. Whether it’s a basic check-up or a comprehensive health screening, these packages can be customized to suit your individual needs.
Final Thoughts
Regular health check-ups are the foundation of preventive healthcare. Whether you're young and healthy or managing chronic conditions, opting for a basic health check-up package in Bhubaneswar is a wise decision. With the availability of various health test packages at home in Odisha, getting checked has never been easier or more convenient.
By opting for a reliable diagnostic center like Diagnostic Point, you can rest assured that you’re getting accurate, timely results. Investing in your health today means safeguarding your future, and a simple health check-up can make all the difference.
With the right health check-up package, you’re not just monitoring your current health—you’re taking proactive steps toward a healthier, more informed future.

Excerpt from this story from The Revelator:
Saudamini Mohakud, the 65-year-old elder of her village, proudly calls herself the daughter and bride of the Eastern Ghats, the range of mountains that borders the eastern Indian state of Odisha. The mountains’ undulating wooded hills cradle her native village, Punasia, where she was born and wed. Saudamini says she could not have been happier growing up in its lap of lush greenery, which included about 50 acres of the community forests near her village.
“The forests were then a treasure trove of nature’s bounties, providing us with fruits, vegetables, tubers, medicines, and numerous other resources that sustained our households,” says Saudamini, now a grandmother to four children. “Our sacred grove, dedicated to our village deities, also flourished within these community forests.” The village cattle, too, grazed at the edge of the forest and community pastures.
But in the 1980s the forests began to disappear. The hills turned bare. According to villagers, loggers rampantly smuggled timber. Summers became hotter; dusty winds from the nearby hills hit the village. Rainfall became scarce and erratic. Agriculture, their primary means of livelihood, became uncertain. Depleted forest resources also hit their secondary source of income: collecting seeds, mushrooms, flowers, and other wild plants.
By the 1990s Punasia’s economy was as bare as the nearby hills. “This resulted in migration of men and youths from our village to find work outside,” rues Saudamini.
But over the past two decades, Punasia village has turned that around. A dedicated band of women led by Saudamini have nurtured nearly 50 acres of degraded forest patches and restored them to their former glory.
The formerly depleted forests have regrown with native trees such as sal, siali, mahua, tamarind, mango, and bamboo. Natural water bodies have also been revived with regular rainfall and rising water tables.
“It was hard work” that relied upon their traditional knowledge, recalls Mami Mohakud, now 35 and a member of Saudamini’s team. “We reared the reappearing saplings in the forests, created fences around them, and saved them from grazing cattle.”
Saudamini’s 20-year-old granddaughter, Nirupama, says these protected and restored community commons are an intrinsic part of Punasia’s existence, spiritual, cultural, and ecological heritage, as they are for other Indigenous communities. “They are not just forests or grazing land for us, but deeply connected with our feelings, sustenance, and day-to-day life,” she says.
Community commons also provide many ecosystem services that regulate the local climate, a process seen around the world, according to Sharat Kumar Palita, a professor in the department of biodiversity and conservation of natural resources at Central University of Odisha, Koraput.
“Different kinds of commons — including forest patches, water bodies, and grazing lands — play their respective roles in maintaining favorable microclimatic conditions,” says Palita.
