DubHacks Fall 2014 - 500 Students and IoT Action in Seattle!

Mashery and Intel attended the first ever DubHacks at the University of Washington over the weekend and were joined by Doug Fisher, Corporate VP and GM of Intel's Software and Services Group.

A 24-hour event, DubHacks started off slow with an empty ballroom on the second floor of the Husky Union Building ( aka The Hub).

Kicking off at 3pm Friday afternoon, the boxes of swag were in adequate supply including devices from Alienware, Oculus, Thalamic Labs, Intel and LeapMotion.

Several "Intel friends" stopped by including Joel Brown, Jack Vargas, Valjean Clark, Raine Bergstrom and Jerroyd Moore, offering technical mentorship and recruiting possibilities to students.

Doug Fisher and family spent a few minutes getting a lesson in robotics from Martin Kronberg.

Budi Mulyo and Martin Kronberg from Jigsaw Renaissance showed up to help out on-site, running an open-hardware library and mentoring students on hardware hacking technicalities.

Once registration opened, students poured into the API sponsor area to check out the prizes and possibilities.

The empty north and south ballrooms filled up completely with 500 eager hackers, ready to experience the first ever major Pacific Northwest collegiate hackathon.

Dozens of students stopped by the Edison library learn more about hardware hacking.

Developers were given hands on tutorials on the use of Intel Edison and Seeed IoT DevKits.

A Kossel OpenBeam 3D printer was on site printing away through the night.

The University of Washington mascot Dubs paid the ballroom a brief but furry visit.

Team Concert Finder, including John Buscher, Mattie Carlson and Darby Losey used the JamBase API to create a chrome extension for locating nearby concerts.

Team Myopen with Minjing Zhu and Beck Pang worked on an integration between Intel Edison and the Myo band from Thalamic Labs.

Team Fisi with Neil Harlow, Joel Sigo, Thomas Crosley, Seth Hampson and Scottie Lim used Food Essentials API to pull in nutritional data to help users plan their weekly eating schedule.

Team LineLight won "Best use of Mashery APIs" for their integration of The Guardian and USA Today APIs with their speed reading technology. Members included Patrick Chiang, Gantulga Balgan, Angelica Cupat and Kevin Liang.

Team Myopen won "Best use of Intel technology" for their efforts to integrate the Myo band with Intel Edison.

Team LineLight eventually won the grand prize for all of DubHacks!
Fantastic event overall, very much looking forward to many such events in Seattle in coming years.
