How Did We Get Here?
About 10 years ago we decided we didn’t want to do the “normal” retirement thing.  We have always had a travel and exploration bug within us and slowing down didn’t seem to be part of what we had in mind after retirement. With that in mind we started thinking, and that, in itself, was a big step!  Then, we started exploring.  We have always loved traveling abroad, learning about other cultures and exploring different countries.  So, we decided living in another country after retirement would be fun but challenging.  Being immersed in another culture, learning another language and meeting new people excited us. With the love of sun, sand and scuba diving, we started looking at the island life, or at least life by the sea. “Toes in the water, ass in the sand” was a perfect analogy for us.  Thus, for the last 10+ years, we have visited many Caribbean islands and warm, coastal countries, looking for the place that felt right, with the idea that “one day” we might live there.  
Last spring, we traveled to Panama with this same idea in mind, and we fell in love with the country and the people.  It was quickly where we wanted to be!  With retirement plans already in the works, we began moving towards the goal of a future life in Panama.  We found a newer development near Las Tablas and identified a lot on the beach that would allow us to build.  Now that’s exciting!
In the Spring of 2019, the purging and planning began in earnest.  After a huge yard sale, we cleaned up our Boise home and made repairs needed to make it ready for the real estate market.  We also bought our temporary home, Toes In The Sand, (aka. T.I.T.S.) a 35-foot Arctic Fox fifth wheel to live in temporarily, (in case our house sold before work was done), and a diesel truck to pull it.  Not just any truck will do that job.  TITS also gave us the ability to explore the United States for a year or two while our Panamanian home was being built (yes, construction there takes over a year for anything to get built.)
Fast forward to present time:  Since our house was listed but has not sold yet, we decided to move out to make it more attractive to buyers.  Two 20-foot Conex boxes (shipping containers) are storing all of our worldly belongings as we departed our home of 17 years.  Thus, our adventure begins.  We officially hit the road in TITS on February 7 with lots to see but no timetable to see it.

First and foremost:
I am absolutely sorry for the last blog post that you may or may not have seen if you subscribe to this blog (It’s gone now).  I was not hacked but apparently James was.  Also, apparently he was set as a contributor to this blog.  So someone hacked into his account and published some sub-par English (like I have any room to complain!) post about something or another… I am sorry to be a cruddy email in your inbox though and thank you so much for those of you who let me know so I could handle it!  It has been fixed and I’ll do my very best to not let it happen again!
Quick Recap!
So, 13 months, to the day, is how long we were on the road.  And 39,998 miles (I’d like to just round that up bat I can’t do it).  In that time we were able to hit 45 national parks (all of them in the lower 48 excluding 4 island parks accessible only by boat or plane).  We can all, including Denver, say we’ve been to 48 of the 50 states.
I did technically take a computer but it was not easy to hook it up to the internet (I attached via phone).  Then, every time I did my computer wanted to update.  So any time I wanted to write a blog post I had to basically wait 2-4 hours and hope I remembered enough to scribble it down.  As you can see, I think I wrote about 6 blog posts the whole time we were out and that was from my phone (its not easy to blog via touch pad!).  I’m sorry for that but it was a lot more fun exploring the country!!  Hopefully, if you wanted you were able to find us on Instagram where I still updated.
We left in the middle of some hot and heavy tiny house discussions and it’s pretty much been tabled the whole time we were away.  We are very happy to be back thought to finish working through the nuances and hopefully make it easier to live tiny in Idaho at least!
Before That Happens Though:
We have to find a home base.  The thought of mooching off any family while we figure it out is not appealing.  We have great tenants in our ‘real’ house and have no ambition to kick them out just so we could live there a little while.  We can’t occupy the tiny house. Short term (or long term) rentals are astronomical in Boise right now. (Click here for a special link to Yahoo about our hometown)
This left us with one logical answer.  When James moved in to the tiny he never fully downsized.  He just kind of put his things in boxes and then built a basic, detached garage for his ‘real house’, then stored all of his stuff in there.  So we’re converting that garage into some temporary housing for our family of four!
Our Anniversary
We didn’t just end our trip 13 months to the day after take off, we also ended it one our anniversary.  Every year we take a family photo in front of our home as a snapshot of the year.  I am glad to get another picture with ‘Lil Beastie! (our camper).  Here are our anniversary photos to date, I wonder what next year’s will look like! ha!
We lead a pretty cool life, I am so glad I, on a whim, started taking these pictures!

Now The Downsizing Begins Again!
James has been hardcore into the real downsizing efforts.  A year on the road has been pretty eye opening for both of us on what we really need (spoiler: less than what we currently own!).  Honestly, I have cleared the tiny house of several truck loads of stuff!  Our kids have grown up in a year and they really don’t need all the baby stuff we had.  James has gone through box upon box.  We’ve taken two truck loads to the dump, were planning a yard sale for anything else.  Whatever doesn’t sell will be donated to start a new life elsewhere.  Hazel and Miles have been going through all their stuff, they are excited to earn money from their toys AND plan on hosting a lemonade stand for cool refreshments.  I absolutely cannot believe the amount of STUFF we have accumulated in our tiny little places!
Building Anew!
After this weekend we really get going!  We will be adding a kitchen, a custom playhouse/fort for the kids, and doing all those little projects that take a garage to a home for a family of four and their dog!  I will try to do updates because its totally relevant to ‘tiny homes’ and living in small spaces.  Sometimes Instagram is just easier for me because it’s quicker (and can be done from my phone).  I will definitely update on the legalities once that conversation gets going too.  I am happy to be back and ready to rock this world again!  In the mean time here are some of my favorite pictures of our adventures!
Also, this is not the end of our travels, we absolutely plan to make it to those four parks we skipped and are already planning our trip to Alaska (my last state) for next summer followed by celebrating James’s 40th birthday next fall in Hawaii!  We should be able to see all these amazing National Parks before too long!

Our cat is mad we are back.  Did you know we had a cat? It’s probably because I am a dog person ;-).
He misses his bachelors pad and all the fancy parties he used to throw! While we were away we had an RFID cat door programmed to his microchip so that he could enter and exit the house at will (but nothing else could).  We set up a camera pointed at his food so we could make sure he was alive and eating.  Any time the food got low we would order another bag from Amazon and have James’s sister or mom run over and fill his dish.  Pretty sure he enjoyed that set up a whole lot more than he enjoys our company!

Lots of people moved out of New York and California in 2020. Here's where they went “We thought about leaving Seattle the past couple years, but we weren’t ready,” said Jenkins. But when the pandemic made remote work more of a reality for him and they realized they could live anywhere, they packed up and moved to Idaho. “The weather is a big improvement. The traffic is better. It is very welcoming. People are strangely friendly.” Contracts from moving van companies Atlas Van Lines and U-Haul show that people who chose to move to a new state headed away from the population centers on the coasts, with New York and California losing the most residents in 2020. And NAR’s report found newly untethered remote workers left big cities for the suburbs. “New York and California had much higher outbound activity,” said Barry Schellenberg, Atlas Van Lines president. “It could be the cost of living, tax rates or the political climate, perhaps.” This pattern is expected to continue into 2021, according to NAR. With more people deciding where they live based on their own personal needs instead of their commuting time to work, it could mean long-term growth for suburbs and smaller cities. “People want to migrate where they want to go and a lot more companies are allowing employees to work remotely,” said Schellenberg. “Very large organizations have broadcast to their employees: You don’t need to be close to the office anymore.” A ‘land rush’ in Idaho Idaho topped Atlas’ list for states with the most inbound moves, meaning more moving trucks were arriving in the state than leaving it. Also in the top 10 were North Carolina, Maine, Alabama and New Mexico. “The Boise land rush, I call it,” said Jenkins, a consultant aerospace engineer who relocated to Idaho In November. “I’ve never seen so much construction. Not just houses. Schools. Roads. Hospitals. Churches. It is exciting.” The pandemic had accelerated Jenkins’ shift to remote work, allowing for a quality of life move that they had been considering. The Seattle protests last summer against police brutality and systemic racism, which turned into violent clashes with the police, pushed them further. “It was a tipping point,” he said. They inked a deal on a new construction home in June and moved into a rental in Idaho in November. They expect to move into their new home this April. Barbara Dopp, an agent with Keller Williams Realty Boise, said that her team had their best year ever in 2020 and half their sales were to buyers coming from out of state. “I had people calling me, primarily from California and Washington, and they would say, ‘I just have to get out,'” Dopp said. “We are a conservative state and people are attracted to that.” She said buyers coming to Idaho were looking to get away from changes in taxes, local ordinances or the curriculum taught in schools — and they were seeking more safety, she said. “Their perception was that it wasn’t safe to walk their streets, that things had changed and they weren’t going back,” she said. Rick Halstead, who also works in the aviation industry in Seattle, and his wife Julie also left Seattle for Idaho as a result of the pandemic, protests and what he described as a steady decline in their quality of life. “The pendulum of the political environment really swung in the past 10 years,” Halstead said. “There were more and more protests, which would snarl traffic. Opioid problems. Homelessness. Crime. It was encroaching where we lived.” Over a couple weeks in June, a curfew was placed on their neighborhood for safety reasons, police helicopters circled overhead and then, Halstead said, there was a shooting. “It didn’t feel like home anymore,” he said. “Arriving in Idaho has felt like going back 15 years. You get the sense in our neighborhood you’d be okay leaving the doors unlocked. We’ve met more neighbors in three months than we met in our old neighborhood in seven years.” The couple now work remotely permanently and sold their 20-year-old home in Lynnwood, a Seattle suburb, for $630,000. They bought a new construction home that is 600 square feet bigger for $429,000 in Meridian, Idaho. “It’s bigger, brand new and the house payment is $1,000 less [a month],” said Halstead. Most surprising, he said, his health is improving. “I just had a physical and my blood pressure was a lot lower,” he said. “I haven’t done anything different but move here and it went down by 20 points. I feel a lot less anxious. I kind of felt like I was always looking over my shoulder.” The Southeast is another draw Tennessee was another top destination among people looking to relocate last year, according to a report from U-Haul, which tracks the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks entering a state versus leaving over the course of a year. Texas and Florida, which had a lock on the top two spots since 2015, came in second and third, respectively, last year. “I’m seeing a lot of people from California move to Tennessee because they’re attracted to our lifestyle,” said Jeff Porter, U-Haul Company of Nashville president. “Tennessee has no income tax and is very business friendly. There are plenty of jobs. People and companies are taking note.” Edward Hill and his wife, Margaret, moved out of their one-and-a-half-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood and bought a home in Nashville in May. The couple had become concerned about the impact of the pandemic on their health and mobility in the city at the beginning of March. With both of them shifting to remote work full-time, they left on March 11 and initially went to his family’s home outside of Charlottesville, Virginia. They had considered a move to either Virginia or Tennessee to be near family. By May, they had decided to make a permanent move to Nashville to be closer to Margaret’s family and to support her work in the music industry. “Normally we wouldn’t have moved last year,” Hill said. “We would have renewed our lease, but the pandemic just gave us the boost to get out of there.” Because of the pandemic they haven’t gone out much since buying their new home. But they have a lot more room to live, a yard for their dog and there is good fishing — Hill’s passion — nearby. Plus, it’s a lot cheaper than Brooklyn. “The mortgage is half of what rent was in Brooklyn,” Hill said. “Definitely a lower cost of living here.” Leaving big cities for the suburbs While large cities lost the most people during the first seven months of the pandemic, many residents that left didn’t go far, according to NAR’s analysis. Between March and October of 2020, most Manhattanites moved to Brooklyn (33%), the Hamptons (29%) and Jersey City (8%), according to NAR. Similarly, most San Franciscans moved to a county within 60 miles of their previous home. Suburban counties topped the list of places gaining the most people, while cities saw the biggest losses. Williamson County in Texas, a suburban area outside of Austin, saw the biggest migration gains in the country during the first seven months of the pandemic, according to NAR. Another county with a large influx was Suffolk County, New York, home to the tony Hamptons. In contrast, New York County (Manhattan) and Texas counties Travis, Harris and Dallas Counties (home to the cities of Austin, Houston and Dallas, respectively) lost the most people. Atlas Van Lines, a large provider of corporate moves, saw a dramatic drop in companies relocating employees last year and a rise in the number of people doing it on their own. The rise of remote work brought on by the pandemic is a major reason for the shift away from big urban centers, according to Schellenberg. “We thought about leaving Seattle the past couple years, but we weren’t ready,” said Jenkins. But when the pandemic made remote work more of a reality for him and they realized they could live anywhere, they packed up and moved to Idaho. “The weather is a big improvement. The traffic is better. It is very welcoming. People are strangely friendly.”
Contracts from moving van companies Atlas Van Lines and U-Haul show that people who chose to move to a new state headed away from the population centers on the coasts, with New York and California losing the most residents in 2020. And NAR’s report found newly untethered remote workers left big cities for the suburbs.
“New York and California had much higher outbound activity,” said Barry Schellenberg, Atlas Van Lines president. “It could be the cost of living, tax rates or the political climate, perhaps.”
This pattern is expected to continue into 2021, according to NAR. With more people deciding where they live based on their own personal needs instead of their commuting time to work, it could mean long-term growth for suburbs and smaller cities.
“People want to migrate where they want to go and a lot more companies are allowing employees to work remotely,” said Schellenberg. “Very large organizations have broadcast to their employees: You don’t need to be close to the office anymore.”
A ‘land rush’ in Idaho
Idaho topped Atlas’ list for states with the most inbound moves, meaning more moving trucks were arriving in the state than leaving it. Also in the top 10 were North Carolina, Maine, Alabama and New Mexico.
“The Boise land rush, I call it,” said Jenkins, a consultant aerospace engineer who relocated to Idaho In November. “I’ve never seen so much construction. Not just houses. Schools. Roads. Hospitals. Churches. It is exciting.”
The pandemic had accelerated Jenkins’ shift to remote work, allowing for a quality of life move that they had been considering. The Seattle protests last summer against police brutality and systemic racism, which turned into violent clashes with the police, pushed them further.
“It was a tipping point,” he said. They inked a deal on a new construction home in June and moved into a rental in Idaho in November. They expect to move into their new home this April.
Barbara Dopp, an agent with Keller Williams Realty Boise, said that her team had their best year ever in 2020 and half their sales were to buyers coming from out of state.
“I had people calling me, primarily from California and Washington, and they would say, ‘I just have to get out,'” Dopp said. “We are a conservative state and people are attracted to that.”
She said buyers coming to Idaho were looking to get away from changes in taxes, local ordinances or the curriculum taught in schools — and they were seeking more safety, she said.
“Their perception was that it wasn’t safe to walk their streets, that things had changed and they weren’t going back,” she said.
Rick Halstead, who also works in the aviation industry in Seattle, and his wife Julie also left Seattle for Idaho as a result of the pandemic, protests and what he described as a steady decline in their quality of life.
“The pendulum of the political environment really swung in the past 10 years,” Halstead said. “There were more and more protests, which would snarl traffic. Opioid problems. Homelessness. Crime. It was encroaching where we lived.”
Over a couple weeks in June, a curfew was placed on their neighborhood for safety reasons, police helicopters circled overhead and then, Halstead said, there was a shooting.
“It didn’t feel like home anymore,” he said. “Arriving in Idaho has felt like going back 15 years. You get the sense in our neighborhood you’d be okay leaving the doors unlocked. We’ve met more neighbors in three months than we met in our old neighborhood in seven years.”
The couple now work remotely permanently and sold their 20-year-old home in Lynnwood, a Seattle suburb, for $630,000. They bought a new construction home that is 600 square feet bigger for $429,000 in Meridian, Idaho.
“It’s bigger, brand new and the house payment is $1,000 less [a month],” said Halstead.
Most surprising, he said, his health is improving.
“I just had a physical and my blood pressure was a lot lower,” he said. “I haven’t done anything different but move here and it went down by 20 points. I feel a lot less anxious. I kind of felt like I was always looking over my shoulder.”
The Southeast is another draw
Tennessee was another top destination among people looking to relocate last year, according to a report from U-Haul, which tracks the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks entering a state versus leaving over the course of a year. Texas and Florida, which had a lock on the top two spots since 2015, came in second and third, respectively, last year.
“I’m seeing a lot of people from California move to Tennessee because they’re attracted to our lifestyle,” said Jeff Porter, U-Haul Company of Nashville president. “Tennessee has no income tax and is very business friendly. There are plenty of jobs. People and companies are taking note.”
Edward Hill and his wife, Margaret, moved out of their one-and-a-half-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood and bought a home in Nashville in May. The couple had become concerned about the impact of the pandemic on their health and mobility in the city at the beginning of March. With both of them shifting to remote work full-time, they left on March 11 and initially went to his family’s home outside of Charlottesville, Virginia.
They had considered a move to either Virginia or Tennessee to be near family. By May, they had decided to make a permanent move to Nashville to be closer to Margaret’s family and to support her work in the music industry.
“Normally we wouldn’t have moved last year,” Hill said. “We would have renewed our lease, but the pandemic just gave us the boost to get out of there.”
Because of the pandemic they haven’t gone out much since buying their new home. But they have a lot more room to live, a yard for their dog and there is good fishing — Hill’s passion — nearby. Plus, it’s a lot cheaper than Brooklyn.
“The mortgage is half of what rent was in Brooklyn,” Hill said. “Definitely a lower cost of living here.”
Leaving big cities for the suburbs
While large cities lost the most people during the first seven months of the pandemic, many residents that left didn’t go far, according to NAR’s analysis.
Between March and October of 2020, most Manhattanites moved to Brooklyn (33%), the Hamptons (29%) and Jersey City (8%), according to NAR. Similarly, most San Franciscans moved to a county within 60 miles of their previous home.
Suburban counties topped the list of places gaining the most people, while cities saw the biggest losses.
Williamson County in Texas, a suburban area outside of Austin, saw the biggest migration gains in the country during the first seven months of the pandemic, according to NAR. Another county with a large influx was Suffolk County, New York, home to the tony Hamptons.
In contrast, New York County (Manhattan) and Texas counties Travis, Harris and Dallas Counties (home to the cities of Austin, Houston and Dallas, respectively) lost the most people.
Atlas Van Lines, a large provider of corporate moves, saw a dramatic drop in companies relocating employees last year and a rise in the number of people doing it on their own.
The rise of remote work brought on by the pandemic is a major reason for the shift away from big urban centers, according to Schellenberg.
But despite the rollout of vaccines and optimism about a return to work, Schellenberg expects that shift to continue as many companies permanently adopt remote work.
“The pattern [in 2021] will be similar to what we saw in the past year,” Schellenberg said. “People will be moving away from coastal areas where there is a higher cost of living and going to places like Idaho, Arizona, Texas, Tennessee.”

By Marcela Escobari, Natalie Geismar Workers, firms, and policymakers each have a role in bolstering economic mobility. Our Mobility Pathways tool can help all of these groups harness relevant data to expand opportunities for mobility and growth. Users can compare jobs by wage level, current demand (estimated from real-time job postings), and “mobility index” ranking (a new indicator we constructed that ranks occupations based on whether their workers typically transition into higher-paying jobs).

The Mobility Pathways tool is designed with a few key “use cases” in mind:
1. Workers (and organizations supporting them) who want to explore realistic pathways to higher-paying jobs.
Navigating today’s labor market is overwhelming and high-stakes—the tool highlights realistic upward pathways from any given job. If you’re a retail salesperson, it shows the most common jobs that people in retail typically transition to, and how those potential transitions compare to your current job. You’ll learn that retail workers most commonly transition to retail supervisors or cashiers, but the most promising potential transitions are to jobs as stock clerks or material movers—which each have higher median wages, higher mobility rankings, and are in higher demand than retail sales jobs.
2. Businesses that want to fill staffing needs while supporting upward mobility.
Our tool can help human resource managers explore “source” occupations for any job vacancy—including less intuitive linkages from lower-wage occupations that are still likely to succeed in the role, perhaps with targeted training or upskilling. If you’re a growing tech company looking for computer analysts, the tool shows which occupations have historically transitioned into computer analyst jobs and the current demand for those source occupations. You’ll learn that office machine repairers, with some upskilling, might be a great fit—while offering your organization the chance to provide real career mobility to workers in a lower-wage, lower-demand occupation.
3. Policymakers who want real-time, actionable data on their labor market.
State and city governments need a solid understanding of local employment to facilitate economic growth and upward mobility. During the current recession, with demand surging for a narrow set of occupations as many industries struggle, the tool can help policymakers facilitate strategic employee sharing—in which workers at slumping companies are temporarily matched with firms experiencing spikes in demand. Looking to the future, the tool can help tailor economic development plans, build talent pipelines to attract and retain firms, and better target upskilling, reskilling, and workforce development programs.
For example, the city of Boise, Idaho committed to transition to 100 percent renewable energy by 2035. To do that, they will likely need wind turbine technicians—an occupation expected to grow significantly that pays decent wages and does not typically require workers with bachelor’s degrees, making it an attainable, middle-wage occupation. Our data show that a range of low- and mid-wage jobs, including building cleaners, construction workers, truck drivers, assemblers, and stock movers can feasibly move into higher-paying wind turbine jobs.
Armed with this information, Boise leaders could help nurture the city’s transition to renewable energy while also promoting upward mobility. They could liaise with companies, educational institutions, and workforce development organizations to build capabilities and talent in these and other source occupations, facilitating realistic upward transitions for lower-wage workers and creating a conducive environment for firm staffing needs. In the meantime, they would be building off-ramps for at least two declining occupations: Nationally, many truck driver and stock moving jobs are prone to long-term automation, while wind turbine technician jobs are predicted to grow and offer significantly higher pay.
The Mobility Pathways tool is just the first element of our planned multipart job mobility and smart growth toolkit. In the weeks and months to come, we will be rolling out tools to help local leaders grow industries that improve their regions’ job quality as well as tools to encourage companies to retrain workers and promote internal pathways rather than fire and hire. The tools aim to accommodate the purposes of workforce organizations, companies, or policymakers. More importantly, the dashboard can serve as a touchstone for local leaders to align efforts to improve outcomes in their community. The Job Mobility Toolkit is a product of the Workforce of the Future initiative at Brookings.

Boise, meanwhile, used artificial intelligence to target inefficiencies in inventory and production. The targeted goal was to reduce excess by 10%. The algorithm ended up doubling that target in the first year it was implemented while also increasing on-time deliveries.

Dusting off the Road Trip Blog

Hi there folks,  I am in the process of embarking on another cross-country adventure.
As many of you know my beloved wife Elisa and I are in our 39th year of marriage.  More often than not during those 39 years we have happily owned some sort of recreational vehicle (RV).  We’ve had a couple of different ones.  We’ve had trailers towed with trucks and we’ve had a couple of different types of motorhomes.  At one time we had a 31′ Jamboree Class C motorhome.  Those are the types that are a little like a mullet hairstyle - cargo van in the front and party bus in the back.
We enjoyed “Jambo” as the kids named it, for many years until the business of life and growing list if interests of our kids began to get the best of us.  So after many years, we sold old Jambo to a one-legged senior citizen, who unfortunately lost a leg somehow or another.  He was looking for a motorhome that was of a size that he could manage with his handicap but would still afford him the room to travel the country.  As I think back now on how he happily drove off in old Jambo I can’t help but wonder what adventures he has had in the many years since we sold it.  
Once the kids were grown and gone and I retired from work the first time in 2012, Elisa and I got the itch to get another motorhome.  We began to visit dealerships trying to figure out what we wanted.  We settled on another Class C motorhome but this one would be a little different.  We wanted one that was built atop the very successful and reliable Mercedes Benz Sprinter chassis.  So, in 2013, we took the plunge and purchased our brand new Forest River Solera, model 24S from a dealership in DesMoines, Iowa.  So why did we, who were living in San Diego, CA at the time opt to purchase our motorhome from a large dealer in Des Moines?  Well, after much shopping, we were unable to negotiate an acceptable price from the dealers in sunny San Diego in the middle of winter.  But I found that the dealers in the frozen midwest were happy to take my order for a new Solera.  So we placed our order in November and then went to pick it up in April or May - I can’t quite remember.  We picked the Solera, because we were looking for a smaller motorhome that would be easy to drive and park but still roomy with a slideout….but still packing enough power so we could tow our small car behind it.  
We love the Solera! The MB diesel engine is just great.  It was our first experience owning a diesel vehicle and our initial apprehension and fears of not being able to locate a diesel fueling station were quickly allayed.  Now days you can barely pass a street corner where 2 out of the 3 gas stations are likely to also serve diesel.  The supercharged diesel engine in the Solera has plenty of power but was also pretty reasonable on fuel consumption. We would routinely experience 10 to 13 mpg depending on highway and weather conditions - all while pulling our car behind us.
Many of you may remember the previous blog I wrote in 2013 that detailed our “Epic Road trip”.  We spent almost 3 months on the road covering about 40 of the lower 48 states.  We put about 13000 miles on the Solera that summer and we did it without going totally mad in our cozy little motorhome.  
After that road trip I took another job to help a friend out turning around a small S/W company.  That kept me pretty busy through 2016, but we would still manage to put another 10000 miles on our Solera by taking a number of shorter trips around the Western USA.  It was on our last trip in January 2017 to Oceanside, CA, that I mentioned to Elisa that it would be nice to have a little larger motorhome - maybe one with a larger bed and most importantly a larger bathroom shower.
So that sort of explains why I’m here in Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport awaiting my next flight to Boise, Idaho.  You see, Elisa and I began looking at motorhomes again.  We started out looking at Class A motorhomes - the ones that look like fancy school busses.  We thought if we found one that was about 5 to 6 feet longer than our 25 fool long Solera it would give us all the space we could ever need.  Well, we had never owned a Class A before and we were amazed at the choices available.  They come in all different sizes and shapes and prices.  We had test driven some very basic ones back in 2013 but found them to be too big and noisy and squeaky.
The first one I looked at in 2017 was a very high-end Tiffen motorhome with a gasoline engine.  I was amazed at how sturdily built, quiet and easy to drive it was.  Night and day difference to the low end one we drove in 2013.  That Tiffen was 31′ long - only 6′ longer than our Solera.  As we looked at more motorhomes, we began to think that our Daughter Krista and her fiancé Travis were about to get married in 2017 and they would surely like to travel with us from time to time.  So, we thought maybe we would look at one that was “a little larger”.  Then we test drove a Newmar Ventana LE - all 37′ of it.  We were amazed at the quiet and smooth ride afforded by the rear mounted diesel engine.  That opened us up to the wonderful world of “diesel pusher” motorhomes.  These motorhomes have commercial diesel engines typically made by Cummins engines, sitting atop a heavy duty bus chassis made by Freightliner and equipped with a smooth Allison transmission.  We quickly learned that the sky was the limit on how these diesel pushers could be equipped.  
The Newmar we test drove was priced at $230K but as it was a 2016 closeout model, it could be ours for a mere $160K.  As nice as it was, we weren’t crazy about the floor plan.  It only had 2 sleeping areas - albeit one was a king sized bed and there other a long sofa that unfolded into a king size air bed.  But it didn’t have the dinette configuration that Elisa preferred - instead it had a regular dining table and 4 chairs.  Very nice.  So the crafty salesman showed us another Newmar - this one 39′ long and this one had everything - including 1 and ½ bathrooms and a fold-out sofa bed and the beloved dinette.  Unfortunately, 1 and ½ bathrooms does not come cheap and it was at $199K.  Still a seemingly great deal as compared to the $260K sticker price.  We were way out of our league.
So Elisa and I set off on a search for a gently used motorhome, preferably a diesel pusher and preferably with the much desired 1 and ½ bathrooms.  We thought we had found it, a Forest River Legacy model.  It was a 2015 and it was in Dallas, Texas.  The price was good but there were complications, the owner was traveling and he didn’t have the pink-slip on it and we would have to work out the transaction with his bank.  Nothing insurmountable.  As we were considering purchasing it we were able to find the same model located in Tampa, Florida.  It was a little more expensive by a few $k but it was a year newer and it was brand new complete with the original warranty.  That looked like the one, but I was not relishing the thought of a solo drive back to the SF Bay area from Tampa.
That pretty much brings us full circle.  I was able to find the same model for sale in Boise, ID at Denis Dillon RV.  After a few phone calls and a little negotiating we had bought our new motorhome.  I did manage to overlook that we are still in the middle of winter and the shortest route to Boise would take us up I-80 over Donner pass, which because of all the winter storms we’ve experienced was largely buried under a mountain of snow.  This would make the drive there and drive back a bit more challenging.  So, I now am sitting in the airport waiting on my next flight to Boise and I will be driving our new motorhome back to the SF Bay area taking a meandering route - sans snow - through Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.  it’s about 500 miles longer than if I were able to take the straight shot down I-80 - but after all, someone once said, “its about the journey and not the destination”.

PS - so what started out as a quest to find a “little larger shower and bed” has resulted in our purchasing a 38′ long diesel motorhome.  What could possibly go wrong?
