Ok now that I've thought about it a bit more I have a take:
Our blessed relationship horror: character thinks it's romantic, author thinks it's fucked up
Their barbarous cishet romance: character thinks it's fucked up, author thinks it's romantic
#ofc this also applies vaguely to queer romance but so long as it's actually WRITTEN by a queer person those tend to be better#this is why I hate the romance genre#you could have COOKED with so many of these concepts but nooo because the AUTHOR thinks it's cute#grow a spine and put it in the horror genre for fuck's sake#sorry I've been thinking about relationship horror lately#I have Let the Right One In and I'll read it when I go to Norway this year#using the blessed v barbarous meme in a /silly sense of course#SP juuuuust toes this line. which magnifies the fucked up-ness a bit for me
