😈 Has there been a point in a story where you did something just to be playfully mean to your readers?
✍ Do you have a beta reader?
⛔ 🎶 ⏳💥 🎃❌
🧠 Pick a character, and I'll tell you my favorite headcanon for them.
🤩 Who is your favorite character to write?
🤲 Would you please share a snippet of a wip?
(this is so many and obviously feel free to answer however many you want!!)
✨ send me an emoji and ask me about my fanfic! ✨
😈 has there been a point in a story where you did something just to be playfully mean to your readers?
honestly, i can't say that there has been! i mean don't get me wrong, i have certainly been writing EVEN MORE ANGST AGAIN and been like. hmm. the people in my phone are gonna hate me for this :) lol. but that angst is also for ME bc like. that's my jam lol. and i never post unfinished multichaptered fics, so i feel its not likely that i'd ever do this, since i don't get feedback on my writing until after it's already completed, lol.
✍ do you have a beta reader?
i don't! i never have, actually. it is an intriguing idea but i've never been a ~serious~ enough writer for it, i don't think, and i also cringe at the idea of anyone seeing anything i've ever written before i have re read and re-edited it about 50 thousand times lol
⛔do you have a fic you started, but scrapped?
recently, no, but i have at least 10 unfinished fics for various old fandoms that are like. not *scrapped*, per se, but just uhhh unlikely to be completed any time soon lol, some being 10+ years old. i never say never but like AM i going finish that OC-au of the mentalist season 6 where somebody is trying to attack all the "psychics" in texas because they have a grudge against what some fake psychic told them like 10 years ago???? honestly, probably not, lol.
🎶do you listen to music while you write? what song have you been playing on loop lately?
yes, i do! can't write in just silence, usually, but it can't have words, either, because i can't hear Words and also Write Different Words, lol. recently i have been listening to 70s-80s Japanese city pop playlists (here is one of my favorites!) since i don't speak the language and it also is such a vibe. in the past i've also done the in love with a ghost vibes, lofi girl, and instrumental synth-wave, as well. i also really like the artist City Girl for that reason, and i think my favorite album of theirs is Neon Impasse. I listened to that on loop a lot writing ttnp!
⏳how long does it take you to write a fic, or a chapter?
this is a very difficult to answer question because it depends on a lot of factors, lol. I have written 20k words in two days before. I have also gone weeks only writing a thousand. it depends on how much free time i have (recently, almost none, lol), how much down time there is at my job (i wrote a large portion of ttnp in down time at my job, and there is not going to be job down time for the foreseeable future unfortunately, which has really put a damper on things). as long as i am at least mildly inspired or motivated, and have ample enough time, i can get a lot done, usually, but it all depends on a lot of factors.
💥how do you feel about criticism?
i am made of tissue paper pls dont hurt me akdshdjfhf i am actually very much okay with and welcoming of it, actually, bc without it, i would never improve. definitely needs to be in good faith, because being made of tissue paper isn't entirely a lie lol, but if there's something i have done poorly or something that i have the opportunity to do better next time, i am always happy to take it into consideration!
🎃do you write fics for holidays? what is your favorite holiday inspired fic?
hmmmm well i actually never have but i love the concept and i am hoping to get to do it this year ;) ;)
❌what's a trope you will never write?
for an actual trope i'd probably have to think a lot longer and harder than i have in answering these questions so far, lol, but one thing i can say, though it's not a trope, is that i'll never write smut. your local sex repulsed asexual is just not about it, lol. which is not to say ive never read and enjoyed fics w/ smut in them!!! i just skip ahead until it's over, lol.
🧠pick a character and i'll tell you my favorite headcanon for them!
omg i don't know which of us is supposed to be doing the headcanoning but i'll go ahead and assume it's you ?????? and my pick is iceman. pls tell me ur fav headcanon !!! i am excited !!!
🤩do you have a favorite character to write?
recently, it had been maverick, to no one's surprise, lol. what can i say. somethin' about the inherent trauma just speaks to me <3
🤲 would you please share a small snippet of a WIP?
HMMM...... I SUPPOSE..... A SMALL ONE......... ;)
Tumblr media
THANK U SO MUCH for the ask !!! i loved answering all of them and i am so sorry it has been taking me so long to do everything recently oh my god. i am, as bilbo would say (im paraphrasing), feeling like butter scraped across way the fuck too much bread these days akdhfdjfhf but i rly appreciate ur asks and ur support and time and continued habit of thinking of me !!! <3 <3

name: trill q gutterbug, the q stands for queer
star sign: who knows or cares
height: 5'10, which means i can definitively say coffee doesn't stunt your growth, even if you start drinking it age 4
time: 9:38am 😓 i do NOT want to be awake rn but the rest of my family is gone atm so the grisly burden of letting the chickens out at ass o'clock fell to me. (eta it is now 12:13 bc i fell asleep for two hours before posting this)
birthday: the day laura ingalls wilder was wed
favorite bands/artists: of montreal, why?, clipping., and nine inch nails are the eternal faves i can't get sick of, but im also tremendously partial to kendrick and lil nas and hozier and mcr and twenty one pilots and the like. also i listen to a lot of chillhop and electroswing, because im a good person with good taste
last movie: i think mad god, which was fantastic and completely incomprehensible. i don't usually have the attention span to sit through a movie if im watching it alone, so.... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (eg, the way i still have to finish everything everywhere all at once, which i got an hour into last week, enjoyed tremendously, then got up to walk around and listen to a podcast and play a video game and jerk off or whatever the fuck, and just haven't gone back!)
last show: i believe the latest ep of what we do in the shadows.... or maybe sunny? or euphoria? whatever it was, i was watching it with jackie im sure!
when did i create this blog: idk where to find that info, but im p sure 2014, after LJ shat the bed and i dipped from active fandom for a couple months and when i came back it was like.... owo where'd everyone go?! here, apparently.
what i post: constant thirsty nonsense about a rotating string of fandom obsessions, shitposts, sometimes a bit of tumblr-brand anarchism and socialism bc even the junkfood buffet churns out a smidge of healthy caloric content every once in a while
last thing i googled: i don't use google but the last thing i duckduckgo'd was........ where's wade wilson from, bc i saw something that said vancouver and one of the movies implied regina but i swear to GOD i know it's winnipeg from some other source. results annoyingly inconclusive.
other blogs: @truelevelb1tch, my rick and morty side, which is going to pop off again in a MONTH (!!!!!!!!!) when s6 starts dropping 😱😱😱. i do not apologise for the person i become when r&m occurs, fair warning
do i get asks?: not enough to worry about, thank goodness
following: idk where to find that info either, but it's probably a few hundred, the vast majority of which are inactive at this point. i probably see <50 blogs on my dash??
average hours of sleep: like eight, which is NOT enough for me, but it varies wildly between 5 and 10 depending on what im doing for work on a given day/whether i have to get up early for animal-related reasons/if im up reading fic until 3am/time of year/blah blah
instruments: flesh flute....,,,
what i’m wearing: nuthin
dream job: I Do Not Dream of Labour
dream trip: i hate travelling! but i am partial to visiting my cousins' farm on the reg, so let's say that
nationality: canadian
favorite songs: the trapeze swinger by iron and wine has been my fave song for about ten years. it's almost ten minutes long and if stats across various laptops and ipods and phones could be collated, it would show a playcount in the thousands lol. i first heard it as the closing music on the amazing podfic for the inception fic presque vu and it gutted me on the spot. ode to the mets by the strokes is also on the same trajectory. otherwise, my fave songs come and go in the usual way, by liking something and listening to it repeatedly until i can't stand it. (eta: just went into my music app to see if i'd forgotten anything, and literally the only thing on my "most played" list is the trapeze swinger, so...)
last book i’ve read: currently reading (aside from the massive eternal stack of ww2 ref books) the half life of valery k by natasha pulley and grimscribe by thomas ligotti. most recently before that i read borne by jeff vandermeer, the kingdoms by natasha pulley, blood meridian, the d&d 5e player's handbook, and some postapoc scifi thing that was so forgettable i genuinely cannot conjure up the name of it or its author!!
top 3 fictional universes i’d like to live in: idk, they all seem uniquely bad in ways that do not necessarily improve upon the unique ways in which our current universe is bad. but to be sporting i'll say star trek of course, anything jared harris is in bc i want to fuck him more than im afraid of space terrorists or freezing to death or nuclear radiation, and the fictional universe i've been manifesting in my imagination for years where we never invented agriculture and i died at birth for simplistic umbilical cord-related reasons
lowkey tagging @kaasknot, @collapsinghorizons, @mollynoble, @twobrokenwyngs, @pohjanneito, @lingua-mortua, @sloppyplanetary, @alakeeffectgirl, and @quiescentire

A Tale of a Thousand Stars ep 10 thoughts/reaction
here we go
damn, phupha’s really been whipped from the start, huh?
awww, tian leaving the sticky notes for the next teacher
i can’t handle this, why are goodbyes so sad
you know what? im usually crazy about child characters very much but i would absolutely die for each of the children
meejoo wanting to be a teacher like tian 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
even khama tearing up at having to say goodbye and the rest of the village crying, how could tian ever leave them???
“this might not be as good as your designer clothes” ofc its not its way better
phupha you told him to leave forever and don’t even have the guts to say goodbye
the way tian’s voice wavers when he says 1 2 3
if his parents could see this group hug they never would’ve made him come back home
the parallel of him crying as he walks away from the villagers as he loses them once again
tian really said this is my jacket now
i called it, last week i predicted tian would finally see torfun’s wish and it would turn out that he had already fulfilled it
tian writing about all the things he doesn’t have to do anymore despite the fact that he is now doing those things
the product placements used to be horny but now they’re just sad
it’s the little details, like tian going back to having the parted bangs when he’s in bangkok that are a bit more stylish but when he was in pha pun dao (and when he’s back in the post credit scenes) he didn’t style his hair
tian, i’m glad you found a love for northern food but i can’t help but be reminded when your doctor specifically told you not to eat spicy food
tul knows what’s up
character A talking about character B then the scene cutting to character B sneezing is one of my favorite troops in asian media lol
dr nam also knows what’s up (and everyone else in the village)
i think i understand tian a bit better bc i feel like last ep i was kind of confused why tian just accepted leaving when there wasn’t anything truly forcing him to do so, but i think it’s bc tian has always had this mindset of following what his parents want so he thinks of that future with his parents as somewhat set in stone even if the path there is flexible, so even though i wish he hadn’t had to leave the village i do think it’s important that he had this period of realizing that he can choose his own future
i like mr winai, he’s cool
the metaphor of the flower being tian, when he’s coddled too much by his parents he withers, but when he really experiences life and faces it he blossoms
also “the place that fits you will make you grow”
it must be so frustrating for tian to have gone through all that, to have finally put his all into something, to have experienced all the ups and downs and then to have everyone reduce that experience to just “a rich kid having some fun pretending to struggle for a little while”
okay but how prestigious a university do you need to go to for teaching tho? like not to reduce the difficulty of teaching or anything but does he really need to go overseas?
what with nam flirting in the eearly episodes, i wish he and the show had treated the wedding more as his wedding than just an excuse for phupha and tian to reunite, like marriage is kind of a big deal
“are you having a date?” yes
lol he’s marrying p’amp
unpopular opinion maybe but phupha’s suit is lowkey kinda ugly
on the other hand, yod and rang look fantastic
now i do think it was important for tian to finish his degree and spend the two years teachings but in an ideal world they would’ve reconnected at the wedding and kissed and gone back to pha pun dao together
poor tian tho, thinking phupha is specifically avoiding him, that shit hurts
i still can’t tell if phupha was actually avoiding him bc i feel like if he was he wouldn’t’ve come back and he seemed surprised to see tian
yes, good job nam, get his phone number
phupha, you coward
the song that plays when phupha comes is so good and the lyrics fit the situation so well, honestly this whole sequence of phupha staring at him then tian returning back home while this song plays was for me one of the most emotional scenes this ep
“it keeps my heart warm”
tian, no amount of distance will make you forget phupha
more sad product placement
in ideal world #2 phupha would’ve goon to the airport to stop him not just send him off
also, tian in the black turtleneck with phupha’s jacket is a look
that phone call though with the long silences as neither is quite sure what to say and they’re too emotional to say more
the whole airport scene has really got me fucked up
just everything about it
phupha saying he wouldn’t be able to forget him and he doesn’t want them to forget each other
that hug tho
and then the second one
and the mom’s reaction has me cracking up, poor woman is the only one with zero context for this whole interaction
kiss him on the lips you coward
okay but the rangers taking over as teachers while waiting for the new one is adorable
also the kids teasing phupha about tian some high quality content
“where is the angel now?” “In the US probably” “he just avoids saying it directly” im gonna say it again but i would die for these kids
i think my biggest complaint about the ending is that we never see tian’s reunion with the kids, i kept waiting for that
okay but did tian suggest faking the security threat or did one of the other rangers suggest and tian was like “perfect”?
its sweet that he buried the notebook on the cliff, that’s where torfun would want to be put to rest
phupha, what did you see your endgame being if it wasn’t tian returning to pha pun dao?
also, earth looks really good in the lighting of the sunset
then earth’s softer version of the OST in the background (i still like aye’s version better bc its amazing, but earth’s is nice too)
lol phupha used a pick up line on tian
the post-credit scene gave me life, it is everything
the hug from behind
tian just stepping on phupha
tian’s “beg me”
phupha is so fucking whipped and tian knows it
“just sleep?”
when gmmtv decides to make our skyy season 2 there’d better be 50 whole minutes of just scenes like this for them
the way they’re laying in bed parallels the first time they slept next to each other
i can’t believe it’s over, y’all, like what a journey, i truly wasn’t expecting the story to be so emotional and dramatic but i really have loved it so much and while i’m glad we’ve finally gotten to the happy ending, i’m so sad to say goodbye. i don’t think fish upon the sky will be quite as good or be so impactful, but nevertheless i’m excited to start that next week and i hope it will be a good addition to frigay and give me something new to be excited about each week

Groundbreaking (literally) not-fun facts about Greece
A history of earthquakes, not because it is pleasant, but because we (especially us Greeks) need to know it. Trigger warnings left and right, up and down.
I saw many different rankings so I chose the one that provided the most information. This site ranks Greece 8th in the world in terms of annual frequency of major earthquakes (0.28). Greece shares this frequency placement with Italy, Afghanistan, India and Mexico. Neighbour Turkey is even higher in this list.
Which means, Greece and Italy are the most seismic active countries in Europe.
Greece sits on top of three tectonic plates (poor thing). The Eurasian plate and the small Aegean sea plate are in the North and Center of Greece. These two move apart from each other. At the same time, in South Greece, the African plate pushes itself towards the Aegean Sea plate and sinks beneath it.
No earthquake with magnitude over 7.2 has been recorded instrumentally in Greece. Those big earthquakes usually occur in great depths where the African plate sinks under the South Aegean sea, which makes them not as disastrous as they could have been otherwise.
Greece has 157 active rifts that have caused 570 known earthquakes of magnitude bigger than 6.0. 53 of them took place in only three of the Heptanese islands, making them the most seismic region of Greece.
A few days ago two earthquakes from nearby rifts of magnitudes 6.3 and 6.0 and unusual duration in the region of Elassona has concerned scientists as “unexpected seismic behaviour”. Many buildings are evaluated as uninhabitable and one 83 year old man lost his life.
In October 2020, a 7.0 earthquake between the Greek island of Samos and the Turkish Gulf of Ephesus was ranked VIII in the Mercalli scale. Two teenagers were killed in Samos and Turkey suffered a tragic death toll of 114 people. The earthquake also caused a tsunami.
The Great Earthquake of Thessaloniki (1978) was a 6,5 tremblor with a focal depth of 6 miles and duration of 10 seconds. It was a VIII in the Mercalli intensity scale. Many thousands were left homeless and 49 people died. After that Greece started investing a lot in earthquake safety rules awareness as well as earthquake resistant civil engineering.
The largest earthquake in the last 50 years was a 7.1 tremblor in Agios Efstratios island, 1968.
In 1955, and in between many natural disasters, Volos city was hit by a 6.2 earthquake . Almost 70% of the city's houses were severely damaged or collapsed. Many of these houses were historical mansions that belonged to old families of captains and ship owners as Volos is a major port city. The state sent a great military and naval force to help rebuild the city. Within a year, the city's architectural profile had changed entirely forever.
The deadliest earthquake in the history of Modern Greece was a 7.3 earthquake that happened in Chios island in April of 1881 and had 7,866 fatalities.
In 1866, a 6.1 earthquake in Santorini, caused the Volcano of Nea Kameni to erupt and create two new islets. These are visited by tourists nowadays.
The biggest earthquake in the history of Modern Greece occurred in Rhodes island, in 12 October 1856. It is estimated that it had a magnitude of 8.2 and it lasted more than one minute. It destroyed entirely more than 3,200 houses and shook 10 other countries. It killed only 12 people because strong pre-shocks had already made people worry and exit their houses.
In December 856 AD, in Corinth, an earthquake of a magnitude we can only guess - but better not - killed 45,000 people.
In 226 BC, an earthquake of unknown magnitude toppled the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World.
An estimated 7.0 earthquake took place in the Euboic Gulf in 426 BC. The historian Thucydides concluded that the Malian Gulf tsunami of the same year was caused by the earthquake and he was the first to recognize such a link.
The earliest earthquake we know about from historical sources is an estimated 7.2 in Sparta, in 464 BC. It killed about 20,000 people.

oK SO: would you fight them: ateez edition go 👀
I LOVE THIS!!!! I hope this is fun to read through (and sorry if it’s boring haha)
SEONGHWA:
8/10, definitely
Boi does so many rude things
Someone needs to put him back in his place
Plus his HP meter is halved after that Wooyoung + lap incident
Idk if I could win bc he has a whole 10 inches on me
But still worth fighting bc of the emotional comfort it would bring me and the fellow Seonghwa simps
HONGJOONG:
6/10, I would but I also wouldn’t
Like idk how I’d emotionally prepare myself for this
Everyone’s soft for our tiny leader??? so?? why fight him???
AND I need him to stay in one piece so he can keep producing bops
BUT!!!
I HAVE PENT UP EMOTIONS BC OF THE WAY HE’LL LOOK AT THE CAMERA DURING PERFORMANCES
SO IF I CHANNELED THAT IT MIGHT WORK
Btw he’s smol and I’m smol so I think I could take him ^^
YUNHO:
8/10 yes
First of all, I have abs of steel from how much he’s made me laugh
Second of all, I have emotional reason to because of the way he’ll twerk in every other interview
Third of all, he’s too nice to actually fight vicious enough to win
The 2/10 that wouldn’t is bc.... well...
Did I mention he’s too nice??
YEOSANG:
4/10 I might, possibly, maybe think about it...?
Boi be strong (see: ISAC, thank you @yeocult for educating me)
Boi be vicious (see: Weekly Idol and various YT compilations)
Boi be too adorable/angelic to fight (the Twister interview during Wave era? “It’s me!~” is my favorite thing in the world y’alllll)
BUT THAT 4/10 THAT WOULD???
IT’s BECAUSE HE KNOWS
hE KNowS NO ONE WOULD FIGHT HIM
AND I GOTTA SHOW HIM THAT YES SOMEONE WOULD
SAN:
0/10 never in a thousand years
Look
People put Jongho as their 0/10 member
But it’s San, I’m telling you
He’s too sweet to fight so if you did
It would be for a reason
And if you got there
It’s too late for you
He’ll use those freaky dancing abilities for war
And it won’t be pretty
O.O
MINGI:
7/10 under emotional pressure, yes
Idk y’all
He’s like, 10 feet tall
But I feel like under stress he would basically be all flailing limbs?
Like, too panicked to fight smart
His first instinct would be to run away screeching
So I think I could take him, I truly do~
But emotionally?
NO!!!!!
WOOYOUNG:
5/10 mixed bag
I feel like it’d be hard to get down to the actual fight??
Like, we could both screech insults at each other
And glower a lot
But I don’t think either side would actually start the fight unless something major is going on??
Cuz he’s cute I feel like he’s used to getting out of fights
And dance is a non-impact sport
So I feel like he wouldn’t quite know how to beat someone up??
Which makes his superior strength less useful
50/50 chance y’all
JONGHO:
2/10 in general no... but—
Picture with me this, fine folks:
Me, 5 feet tall but emotionally invested in bringing down this giant. Prepared. Ready to follow through to the end.
Jongho, buff and loud and significantly bulkier. Maybe bored. Maybe fired up. (Who knows?)
Common sense says I lose.
BUT!!! I have 2 strategies!!!
1: Distract him with a box of apples
His fruit killing instincts kick in, thereby deriving him of any desire to fight me
2: Challenge him to a high note battle instead
He knows he has an incredible range; he’s the pro; he’s got this. So why not??
He takes the bait
(I’m a mezzo soprano and can usually reach any of his adlibs via luck and falsetto)
(Idk how it turns out. But at least this way I live)

a review of the album that no one asked for:
Intro: nothing new because we heard it before. It was nice I guess but I agree with the journalist who said there was no need for 4 people to write this. Also the piano is kinda basic, I did piano for a year and even I could play that melody. (8/10)
Wonder: it’s a great song but ngl I only heard it when it came out and not once after that. I just don’t go looking for it. (7/10)
Higher: if there’s one thing I can’t stand in music is repetition and this song has WAYY too much of that. But overall it’s alright. The chorus is catchy and the beat is nice. (6/10)
24 Hours: I had high expectations for this one bc people were crying about it in the tag and expectations were not met. I’m a sucker for songs like that so the fact that I didn’t like it is surprising. From the lyrics to the melody...did not vibe. Also, “I’m not the type to overthink” HUH? Every single interview you ever made about your anxiety beg to differ. (4/10)
Teach Me How To Love: beat is great, lyrics are not it. If this is how he does explicit, he better stick to being subtle like in Particular Taste. (7/10)
Call My Friends: wait, does this boy smoke? I couldn’t tell from the thousand times he brought it up. It’s a cute song though. I haven’t seen my friends since March and this hit close to home. (8/10)
Dream: probably the first song I really liked. It was cute. Lyrics still feel a tad bit generic (expected but I won’t elaborate) (9/10)
Song For No One: this song was all over the place oh my god. Didn’t care for it. Could not tell you a single lyrics because I zoned out. Kinda boring. (3/10)
Monster: same with Wonder. Not a bad song but haven’t listened to it once since it came out. (7/10)
305: I like this one. Beat is nice. I thought this would be about Miami tho but alright not complaining. People kept talking about how much this album is a risk compared to his safer old stuff, and tbh this is the first song that stood out to me as very different than what he has done before. (9/10)
Always Been You: ok I LIKE THIS. Lyrics still feel generic (at this point I’m guessing his rhymes, that’s not a good sign). Kinda stupid but the ‘you were sent to save me’ lyrics rub me the wrong way. (9/10)
Piece of You: the beat is IMMACULATE. The lyrics are sad. That’s not what a healthy dynamic looks like. (8/10)
Look Up At The Stars: two seconds in and I can already say this is what 24 Hours wish she was. Nevermind he brought the bass in lmao but this is GOOD. If this really is to fans, then it’s perfect. (10/10)
Can’t Imagine: this song would be 100/10 if it wasn’t for the freaking repetition. We’re halfway at this point and he has said the same phrase 50 times. Not to be mean but what was the point of this? His vocals sound great, but this feels like it belong in the drafts. (2/10) 2 SOLELY for the vocals. (that’s good for now, HUH? This is an album. Should have kept that one in your insta stories).
Conclusion: if you do the math, this would be a 70/100. Not bad. There some absolutely BANGERS in this one but also songs that just aren’t good. That’s funny because usually with Shawn I have songs that aren’t my favorites but I still listen to them occasionally because they’re still good. Definitely not the case with this album because there’s some songs here that I’m skipping 100%. I guess that’s what happens when you take risks though. Also, the lyrics weren’t his best. He clearly needs Teddy lmao.
So, to wrap it up, is it his best album? No, SM3 and Illuminate are still superior. But it isn’t a bad album.

50 Questions You Have Never Been Asked
i was tagged by @loverofelves :3c thank u <3
1. What is the color of your hairbrush?
black, nothing special, my mom got it from a dollar store for me bc my old one was literally falling apart but i refused to replace it
2. A food you never eat?
the only thing i can think of that i would probably not eat even if that meant it gets thrown away is steak, or any cut of red meat. i have a lot of trouble swallowing it for some reason. most other foods i hate i would still rather eat than waste them
3. Are you typically too warm or too cold?
theres no really comfortable temperature for me i think. im always either too warm or too cold. but since i spend most time in my bedroom which only gets sunlight for about 4 hours a day, im usually too cold
4. What were you doing 45 minutes ago?
painting with watercolours and listening to music
5. What is your favorite candy bar?
i avoid sweets so i dont really know the different breeds of candy bar
6. Have you ever been to a professional sporting event?

tap water
10. Do you like your wallet?

11. What was the last thing you ate?
a small bowl of plain oats with milk for breakfast
12. Did you buy any new clothes last weekend?
no... im saving my money for useless things rn!

10 Quick Interesting Facts about Organic Essential Oil
Most people do not understand how essential oils can be an important part of their lives due to the numerous uses they come with. From dealing with headaches and stomachaches to pesky insects and fungal infections, organic essential oils can help us deal with a lot of issues. Essential oils are made by extracting the oils from plants through the process of distillation that is done by steam or water from the flowers, bark, stems, roots, and leaves of the plant. After distillation, you now have a product that is a highly concentrated extract of the plant, the essential oil, which comes with healing properties and a fragrance of the plant it was extracted from. However, there are also a lot of interesting facts most people do not know about organic essential oils. Keep reading to find out some of the 10 quick interesting facts about organic essential oil you probably did not know of.
Essential oils are naturally produced
Essential oils are produced naturally, which means they come from things in nature. Since things from nature belong to the public domain, this means that they cannot be patented; hence no person or entity can lay claim on them in such a way that only they can profit. Therefore, you are likely not to see essential oil in a pharmaceutical product. This is also part of the reason why there has not been much scientific research on the essential oils to this day. This is because the research is unlikely to yield any profits in the end. Anyone that sells essential oils can profit from the sale but they will not be the only ones doing so.
2.
Essential oils work fast
It is widely known that essential oils can be used for therapeutic purposes but a lot of people do not know how long it takes the essential oils to take effect. It usually takes a very short time for the essential oils to take effect compared to other methods. Therefore, if you need immediate help with relieving the symptoms of cold and flu, then you should consider using essential oil.
3.
A lot of plants may be used to make a little amount of essential oil
When producing essential oil, a lot of plants are usually used to produce just a small amount of essential oil. Five hundred to one thousand kilograms of lavender flowers are capable of only producing approximately eight to thirty-six kilograms of the lavender essential oil. In this case, the 500-1000 kilograms being referred to is the total weight of the petals of the lavender flowers and not the whole plant as this the part that produces the lavender essential oil.
4.
Only a few species of plants have been evaluated for essential oils
Currently, it is known that approximately 450 plant species have been found to be able to produce essential oils. However, despite this, not all these plants produce essential oils that can be used for aromatherapy. From the 450 species of plants, only approximately 125-150 are known to produce essential oils that can be used for aromatherapy.
5.
Each essential oil has different phytochemicals
Phytochemicals are chemicals that are produced by all plants. We do not need these phytochemicals to survive; however, they can benefit us in many ways when it comes to improving our health. Some come with antimicrobial properties and others can be used to help protect our cells against oxidative activity.
6.
Essential oils are not really oils
Generally, there are 2 types of oils, mineral, and organic oils. Mineral oils like petroleum come from ancient fossilized organic materials while organic oils come from plants and animals. Essential oils may be called oils but they are not really oils. This is because they do not have fatty acids or lipids that the other organic oils such as animal fat, coconut oil, and vegetable oil tend to have.
7.
Essential oils have been in use for thousands of years
What most people forget is that essential oils have been in use for thousands of years. Evidence has shown that ancient Egyptians used essential oils for spiritual and medicinal purposes as early as 2000 BC. A good example can be attributed to King Tutankhamun, who was found to have been buried with over 50 jars containing essential oils.
8.
Fragrance oils are not essential oils.
As much as essential oils may be used for aromatherapy, it doesn’t mean that fragrance oils are the same as essential oils. Therefore, if you come across something that is either labeled as a perfume or fragrance, then it is likely to be synthetic oil and not natural oil. Even when a fragrance is termed as a “natural fragrance”, this does not mean that it is equivalent to essential oil.
9.
Essential oils have a very long shelf life.
Essential oils are known to have very long shelf lives. To ensure this, the essential oils are usually stored in dark bottles, away from the heat of the sun, in a dry cool place. if you store your essential oils properly, then you can be sure that they will last for several years to come. This means that they are a great investment over time. However, it does not mean that if you follow these storage methods your essential oils will last you forever.
10.
You can differentiate high-quality essential oils from the cheap ones.
When it comes to differentiating the quality of essential oils, it is not hard to spot the difference between good quality essential oils and the poor quality ones. If you want to determine the quality of the essential oil, then all you have to do is simply lookout for the common name of the oil, the country of origin, the name in Latin, its country of origin, the part of the plant that was processed, the method of extraction, and how the plant was grown. Reputable manufacturers tend to give you all this information.

“Our House is on Fire,” and Carbon Taxes Are Not Enough to Save Us
In 2008, British Columbia implemented North America's first broad-based carbon tax. Between 2007 and 2016, provincial real GDP grew by 19%, while net emissions were reduced by 3.7%. Although GDP growth over nine years is impressive, the meagre 3.7% reduction in emissions over such an extensive period is, to say the least, dismal. Add another year, the results look even worse: in 2007, BC emitted 64.76 tons of Greenhouse Gas emissions; in 2017, 64.46 tons - a  mere .30 ton drop in emissions or 0.46%, less than one-half a percent, over ten years. And these recent figures do not take into account all the carbon emitting forest fires in BC over these years - a situation, one could easily surmise, that would add significantly to the total amount of emissions recorded over this ten year period.
Nonetheless BC’s initiative continues to be frequently looked to as a model strategy for carbon emissions reduction. But, in our current context of a climate emergency, it is not really, I would argue, an effective enough method for reducing emissions as aggressively as we must in order to have a truly habitable world.  It is instead a good example of market based economics that has been successfully sold politically, especially by neoliberal economists, and that is why it continues to be pushed in at least 50 jurisdictions around the globe as a relatively comfortable method for dealing with emissions by those in particular who have a stake in the business-as-usual game that serves their economic interests.
It is this sort of strategy, that is, putting a price on carbon, that our current federal government has adopted as its main strategy in its Greenhouse Gas Pollution Act of 2018 and, with variations, some of the major federal parties advocate - specifically a fee-rebate structure - but it, like the BC initiative, is also woefully ineffective. We don’t have a recent report, but as of 2017 emissions in Canada (716 million tons of carbon dioxide) have been reduced by a mere 2% since 2005 levels, we are 79 mega-tonnes short of the Paris Agreement targets, and emissions in 2018 have risen 7% since 1997, the year we signed the Kyoto Agreement. It’s doubtful they dropped significantly in 2019.
The fee/tax is supposed to provide an incentive to change one’s carbon behaviour. What works against such an incentive, however, is a politically motivated tax credit payable to just about everyone to use as they wish - except the big industrial polluters who have a different market based scheme based on industry sector thresholds that is also inadequate. Such compensation, in effect, undermines any real incentive to change one’s carbon behaviour. Unless one is a committed environmentalist, why should one change one's carbon behaviour when there’s little or no pain? And in what way are such fees an incentive, say, to drive less when one has no other choice but to do so, as many do, for example, in rural Canada, where there is no public transportation to speak of, or to opt for a green vehicle or home energy source when one cannot afford the capital outlay even with government subsidies, now only available from the federal government in Ontario? Not to mention  that, despite the tax credit, any fee or tax on fossil fuels disproportionately wounds those with lower incomes who cannot afford to absorb increases even with a dividend.
Even if the fee were higher, as some have suggested it should be for the process to work effectively, is anyone who isn't in the 10% going to stop driving a fossil fuel car? Is any medium size business suddenly going to switch its energy sources and green its infrastructure without significant subsidization? We're all deeply locked into fossil fuel capital investments and inscribed in the global infrastructure of fossil fuels - our houses, our cars, our businesses - and because we've naturalized that situation so deeply, we won't abandon them completely until we absolutely have to do so in order to survive.
That day may be coming: a report synthesizing all the recent research by the Science Advisory Group of the UN Climate Action Summit to coincide with the UN Summit on climate change reveals that 2014-2019 is on track to be the hottest six year period on record and that emissions reductions should really be three times what the Paris Accord recommends. Issued just two days later, the UN International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report co-written by 100 scientists synthesizing 700 recent scientific studies indicating that conditions are even worse than they anticipated in their 2018 report underscores once again the monumental crisis we're facing without aggressive action.
Yet carbon tax strategies remain attractive to governments and political parties, and it would seem many climate conscious environmental organizations also think they are a good strategy. Why? Because they are more politically palatable and would seem to balance some effort against climate change with a business-as-usual economy.  But it is, alas, no longer business-as-usual:  there are no jobs on an uninhabitable planet.
There is of course considerable resistance, propagandistic and otherwise, from the vested interests of fossil fuel production corporations, their financial backers, and their friends in media and government to any efforts to wean us off fossil fuels and to shift us exclusively towards sustainable green energy sources. Ask yourself who benefits from political inertia? Who benefits from climate inaction? We have a considerable number of those especially in the Western world who indulge in classic whataboutism too: what about China? What about the recalcitrance of Brazil, Turkey, and Russia? What about all the developing countries still burning coal?
And there is also what has now become a desperate resistance from climate change deniers who, when they behave with a degree of civility on social media and elsewhere, masquerade as philosophical skeptics with a veneer of reason and dance around the massive amount of globally coordinated scientific evidence on the existential reality of global warming and climate change. (Check out the hashtag #climatebrawl.) Their goal is essentially to keep the issue in doubt and a contested state. Recent cooperative research from the University of Montreal and the University of California at Santa Barbara, however, reveals that the majority of people in every single federal riding in Canada with the exception of three accept the fact of climate change and suggest that some sort of action should be taken. Indeed, with the exception of the three all say their province has experienced climate change.
No wonder they say that. The planet’s average surface temperature in 2018 was the fourth highest since 1880, when record keeping began. Nine of the ten warmest years in recorded history have occurred since 2005 - soon to be ten of the eleven warmest. This past June, the month ER visits in Ontario uncharacteristically but perhaps not coincidentally spiked, was the hottest June ever recorded, while July was the hottest month in human history, the four-hundred and fifteenth straight month of temperatures higher than the twentieth-century average. We also learned recently that September 2019 was the hottest September in recorded history. But, worse news of all, we have increased C02 emissions globally by 20% since 2015, in  mere 3 and 3/4 years. 20%!!
The simple fact is that Canada is the ninth biggest emitter in the world, that Canada has the highest per capita carbon footprint of any country in the G20 (16 tonnes), that we are the tenth biggest emitter in the world if emissions are counted from 1900, that Canada’s North is warming at three times the global average, and that Canada in general is warming at twice the global rate, among the major effects the devastation in the North about which we learned this spring and summer - melting ice and refreezing ice slabs, eroding permafrost, raging fires, warming oceans - and several sustained dome-like heat waves in the South.
And the effects of carbon emissions will be with us forever: the temperature we experience at the Earth’s surface will not decrease if/when we actually manage to stop carbon emissions. It will remain at whatever level it is at the precise moment when we fully stop emissions. That's why net zero* strategies are ineffective: they still allow for the continuous production of CO2 emissions, and seldom do the offsets actually balance that output. Recent research on the significant carbon debt incurred between old forests and new forests of four decades to 100 years are a good example of that failure. In other words, biomass/biofuels (whose carbon debts are misleadingly not budgeted accurately in national carbon ledgers) as well as reforestation are not quite the salvation we might think they are as raging forest fires spewing carbon around the world continue.**
Our carbon dioxide*** emissions are 415 parts per million and accelerating. We burn two-thirds more fossil fuels today than in 1990, and one-half of all fossil fuels burned in human history have been burned since 1990. Another way of saying that: emissions have gone up by 46% in the last 300 years, half that amount in the last 30 years! They will be with us for thousands of years. In other words, the longer we wait to get the process of aggressive decarbonization going, the hotter it will be and the more the economic fallout even if we finally do manage to stop emissions completely.
Much, much more than a carbon tax is required. We'll find out soon enough that only binding government legislated regulations with legal consequences will actually work to reduce emissions and mitigate their effects with the dramatic intensity we need. We will learn that we need to shift the focus to the larger perspective of systemic change - no easy task given that the entire global economy is driven by fossil fuels. Carbon taxes can play a supporting role,**** to be sure, but the sooner all our political parties stop flirting with a price on carbon and market based solutions in general as their main climate change policies, the sooner we can get on with the job that needs to be done right now.
That job is five-fold: 1)  Recognize fully at every level of government the scale of the challenge and that we all have a moral responsibility to work against the undeniable harm being inflicted on our world. Global warming even now affects every single aspect of our lives. Its effects are economic, social, and psychological; and it is already emerging as the number one health issue in the world as conditions worsen. 2) Reduce carbon emissions radically now through legally binding regulations. 3) Aggressively mitigate through whatever methods available the effects of carbon emissions already present in the atmosphere. 4) As politically difficult as this might be, shut down through legislation the production of any and all fossil fuel infrastructure (no more pipelines no more new extraction, no more subsidies). And 5) develop adaptation and survival strategies in all our communities big and small. Why this last? Because we long ago reached the point of no return and  there is no going back.
-------
*Net zero emissions or emissions neutrality means that the amount of emissions generated is no more than the amount taken out, a theoretical complete offset. But the new emissions generated in this process nevertheless remain in the atmosphere, thus extending the presence of those emissions in the atmosphere for decades to come. This is an inadequate form of mitigation in my judgment simply because we’re still burning fossil fuels and emitting carbon. What we need to get to is a state of carbon emissions negativity whereby our carbon footprint is less than neutral by reabsorbing the carbon emissions already in the atmosphere. That job is undermined with net zero strategies. As long as we continue to burn fossil fuels at our current rate, that will not happen and matters will only get worse.
**See Eddy Isaccs in his recent report from The School of Public Policy (https://tinyurl.com/y3vdfc5m): “This is because of the time lag between the instantaneous CO2 release from combustion of wood and the decades of regrowth required“ - 44 to 100 years.
***Why Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is a Problem
Two conditions are always in play with respect to Earth’s atmosphere: the amount of sunlight (solar radiation) that reaches the Earth’s surface through the electromagnetic spectrum and the amount of greenhouse gasses in the air.
Greenhouse gas levels control the amount of heat (infrared radiation) absorbed into the atmosphere as it radiates up from the Earth.
Nitrogen and oxygen make up 99% of the atmosphere, but they really don’t have an effect on the Earth’s temperature because they do not absorb heat (infrared radiation).  Carbon dioxide does indeed absorb heat, a process that prevents CO2 escaping from the atmosphere into space. Thus the more CO2 in the atmosphere, the hotter the Earth’s surface temperature.  Fossil fuel emissions are the biggest source of C02 emissions, and C02 can last in the atmosphere for thousands of years.
****I agree with Eddy Isaccs in his recent report from The School of Public Policy (https://tinyurl.com/y3vdfc5m) that revenue from pricing carbon emissions should focus not on recycling that income for whatever reason, political or otherwise, but on investments in solar and wind infrastructure that can actually contribute directly to the reduction or mitigation of emissions.

well its holiday time!! that means so many families will have more free time and theyll think going to the movies is a great time had by all!! this might be true for anybody actually going, but its definitely not true for anybody WORKING THERE THIS TIME OF YEAR.
so here are a couple notes from somebody who works in the theatre business and i am so gotdamn exhausted by the hundreds of thousands of families i see walk through the doors of my building
THE END OF YEAR HOLIDAYS FROM NOVEMBER TO EARLY JANUARY ARE THE BUSIEST TIME OF YEAR FOR ANY MOVIE THEATRE, HANDS DOWN. EVERYONE HAS TIME OFF AND COMES TO THE MOVIES, YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL AND MILLIONS OF OTHERS ARE GOING TO THE MOVIES JUST LIKE YOU. REMEMBER THIS WHEN YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE LATE OR BUY YOUR TICKETS AT THE DOOR INSTEAD OF AHEAD OF TIME.
everyone makes minimum wage or less (minors dont have to be paid minimum wage, PLUS theres no such thing as overtime or holiday pay in the movie business); youre yelling at literal children almost 100% of the time and quite frankly they have no control over any of it and you throwing a hissy fit will help literally no one, not even yourself
the movies cost mega money if you dont come prepared; eat beforehand if you dont want to spend anything extra. tell your children no if you have to, theres no reason to spend 5$ on m+ms if you cant spare the money. we understand and feel just as badly when we have to tell you the total
if you bring your own snacks, none of us care as long as we dont see it. take it in undetected and you better throw it out afterward as well; if youre not buying any of our concessions then youre not paying for us to clean up after you
(yeah, the concessions cost so much bc thats what pays our paychecks. the theatres do not get any money from ticket sales, save for MAYBE 10%, depends on how long the movie’s been out but most of the time the max amount of money made from ticket sales is about 50 cents. concessions pay for employee paychecks and the building running costs)
BRING YOUR ID IF YOU ARE SEEING AN R-RATED FILM. ALL R-RATED FILM TICKET PURCHASES ARE LIKELY TO BE ID’D AND IF YOU DON’T HAVE IT THEN YOU’RE SHIT OUTTA LUCK. policy for most theatres: you have to be at least 17+ to see an r-rated film WITH A VALID ID (school ids do NOT count), OR be 21+ WITH A VALID ID to take in any more people without an id themselves. no exceptions. this is a firable offense, on the spot, if the cashier or ticket taker is caught allowing underage kids into r-rated films. take this into consideration the next time you want to go see a movie bc there are no exceptions!! fuck you if you dont bring your id but then get mad bc we wont let you in to see the movie!! its your own fault!!!!
understand that there are physically not enough people working in the building to keep the place spotless as hordes of people run around and make a shitty mess everywhere. like, im sorry, but the movie theatre business SUCKS and theres nothing we can do about it other than try and sweep up the popcorn as fast as we can. you complaining to management will not suddenly materialise a new person to come out of the employee breakroom, ready to sweep up whatever it is youre complaining about. patience is KEY bc we quite simply do not have the staff or the staff allowance to provide a perfect atmosphere. it wont happen no matter how much you squall. like, im sorry it sucks, i know it does, im trying to make it run as smoothly as possible but theres just not enough employees allowed for us to do any better. bring your own trash bag and your own napkins if youre that concerned, i promise we wont look at you sideways
ENUNCIATE YOUR ORDER AT THE CONCESSION STAND. the more communicative you are the faster you can be served, i promise, thats EXACTLY how it works and its not taking too long bc the employee is bad its bc youre not speaking up or youre not actually defining what you want. be better, get done faster
try to be more on time when it comes to getting to the theatre. doing everything late makes you angrier and it means we dont have as much time to fix whatever problems you may be having. we cant fix what you need if theres no time because you didnt think youd have to show up to your movie until 20 minutes after it started!!
be mindful of when the locations you visit actually close; we’re not a 24/7 business, and concessions and ticketing sales usually close before midnight, depending on the time of the last show and that building’s policies. at that point, the only thing youre doing is renting space on our premises. take care of everything you need, money-wise, before that time passes or else youre out of luck, just like any other business
dont.... dont bring babies to the movies please. this is more personal than like, actual tips or tricks about the movies or like backalley knowledge or whatever, this is like, this is from a health and courtesy standpoint. movies are LOUD. movies are SCARY. babies shouldnt... be going through that experience. i cant stand whenever i see newborns being carried around as if their ears arent so sensitive and that theyre likely to cry and be generally uncomfortable bc a movie theatre is NOT A PLACE FOR BABIES. find a sitter, or stay home. thats what you sign up for when you become a parent, taking care of your child to the best of your ability. and if that includes taking them with you to the movies... youre a bad parent and theres nothing you can do to convince me otherwise. (also 6 and under cant see r-rated films past a certain time and i rly dont understand why so many folks dont understand that or think its a new rule?? its not a new rule, every movie chain i have been to has had that rule its not new and not specific to just one place cmon now get out of here)
also if you leave garbage in the theatre under the impression that Somebody Gets Paid To Do That, just know that we know and we also hate you passionately bc youre the worst type of person. if you have family like this, correct them. we get paid very little to do much more than you could possibly expect
happy holidays!!! dont take this as a Dont Come To The Movies post, take this as a Come To The Movies Prepared post instead. just dont be a dick, its the holidays, and these are mostly children youre upset with. like, youre yelling at 15 + 16 yr olds. just be nice. if you have a problem with the business itself, take it to corporate, thats the only way youll get anything changed.

Wine Regions of the World
https://j.mp/3BoltK4 The world of wine is at your fingertips. Here at the Wine School, many of our sommelier programs are founded on the idea the core of wine knowledge is understanding wine regions. Table of contentsFrench WineGreatest or Second Greatest?Wine HistoryWine GrapesClassificationsItalian WineWorld’s Greatest Lover (of Wine)History of Italian WineWine RegionsSpanish WineSpanish GrapesSpanish Wine RegionsGerman WineHistory of German WineInnovations in White WineGerman Red WinesAustrian WineWhite WinesRed WinesScandalUnited States WineAustralian WineEconomic DeclineGreat Wine RegionsSouth American Wine RegionsChile & ArgentinaWine Styles French Wine Wine is produced throughout France in quantities between 50 and 60 million hectolitres per year. That is an estimated eight billion bottles of wine! Greatest or Second Greatest? For many wine lovers, France is the world’s greatest wine country. However, it’s now in second place in two key categories. First, it has the world’s second-largest total vineyard area, second to Spain. Second, it is also the second-largest wine producer: Italy takes the lead in the volume of wine produced. Still, many sommeliers would argue that the quality of its wines puts France in the first place. Wine History French wine traces its history to the 6th century BC, with many regions dating their wine-making history to Roman times. However, many of the techniques wineries use today were developed in Franc during the 18th and 19th Centuries. Today, French wines range from mind-bogglingly expensive to modest bottles only seen within France supermarkets. Wine Grapes France is the source of many grape varieties that are planted throughout the world. This includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Syrah. In addition, French winemaking practices have been adopted across the world, with the most famous being barrel-aging wines. Classifications Two concepts are central to French wines. The first is the notion of “terroir,” which is the closest the French have ever gotten to a state-endorsed religion. We’ll cover this complex concept in our French Wine Regions article. The second (and more concrete) concept is the Appellation d’Origine Protégée (AOP) classification system. These rules strictly define which grape varieties and winemaking practices are allowed in each of the several hundred Appellations. Some are massive regions that contain thousands of wineries; other appellations are as small as a single village or a specific vineyard. Want more? We have an article detailing all the major wine regions and grape varietals in France. French Wine Regions Italian Wine Italy is home to some of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world. It is also the world’s largest wine producer, fermenting one-fifth of the world’s wine. Two continents share a love of Italian wine, and it’s not Europe. North America and Asia can’t get enough of Italian vino. With a market share of 10% on both continents. Only the French can boast similar numbers. World’s Greatest Lover (of Wine) It’s not just about exports. Wine is deeply embedded in Italian culture; they lead the world in wine consumption. The average Italian drinks 70 liters of wine per year, compared to 25 liters in the US, 20 liters in Australia, 40 milliliters in China, and 9 milliliters in India. They even beat their arch-rivals, the French, who drink a measly 40 liters per capita annually. History of Italian Wine Etruscans and Greek settlers produced wine in the country long before the Romans started developing their own vineyards in the 2nd century BC. Roman grape-growing and winemaking was prolific and well-organized, pioneering large-scale production and storage techniques. Wine Regions Grapes are grown in almost every region of the country. More than 1 million vineyards are under cultivation. For details of regions and grape varietals, you can check our Italian Wine Regions article. Italian Wine Regions Spanish Wine Located on the Iberian Peninsula with Portugal, Spain has over 2.9 million acres (over 1.17 million hectares) planted. It is the most widely planted wine-producing nation in the world. However, it is the third-largest producer of wine, following France and Italy. Vineyards exist in nearly every nook and cranny of Spain’s geography. Most of these were planted a century ago, but even the newer vineyards tend to be planted with a pre-modern ethos: head-pruned and without irrigation. The result is very low-yielding vineyards and well-above-average wines. Carlos Serres 2012 Rioja Gran Reserva Spanish Grapes The country is listed as ninth in worldwide consumption of wine. Having spent a significant time in-country, that feels like an egregious miscount. According to the bean counters, the average Spaniard drinks 38 liters a year. In my experience, that is less than a month of wine drinking in Spain. I may demand a recount at some point. What is truly distinctive in Spain is the devotion to local wines, which are drunk near exclusively. This is not difficult since the country has an abundance of native grape varieties. Over 400 varieties of wine grapes are currently in production. However, eighty percent of the country’s wine is from twenty grapes. The most important are Tempranillo, Albariño, Garnacha, Palomino, Airen, Macabeo, Parellada, Xarel·lo, Cariñena, and Monastrell. Spanish Wine Regions The major Spanish wine regions include the Rioja and Ribera del Duero, known for their Tempranillo-based wines; Jerez is the home of the fortified wine Sherry; Rías Baixas in the northwest region of Galicia that is known for its white wines made from Albariño. The wines of Catalonia include the sparkling wine Cava and the world-class red wine region of Priorat. Spanish Wine Regions German Wine German wine is primarily produced in the country’s west, along the river Rhine and its tributaries. It has about 102,000 hectares (252,000 acres or 1,020 square kilometers) of the vineyard, around one-tenth of the vineyard surface in Spain, France, or Italy. The total wine production is usually around 9 million hectoliters annually, corresponding to 1.2 billion bottles, which places Germany as the eighth largest wine-producing country in the world. White wine accounts for almost two-thirds of the total production. History of German Wine While better known for its beer, Germany is an old-school wine country. Its oldest vineyards date back to the Roman era. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the reputation of these wines had risen above all other wines, including those from Bordeaux and Burgundy. It was only when disease struck Germany’s vineyards in the late 19th century and the two world wars that the wines lost their luster. In the 21st Century, German wine has a mixed reputation in the United States. Some sommeliers believe German wines offer elegance and complexity. However, many others firmly believe German wines to be cheap, mass-market trash that bank on sugary simplicity. Innovations in White Wine Regardless of which camp you are in, there are a few incontrovertible facts about German winemaking. Ever noticed how most white wines –which the notable exception of Chardonnay– are crisp and fresh? That was a German innovation that changed the face of wine forever. Another innovation was the idea of late harvesting, which has had an outsized impact on winemaking across the world. German Red Wines While primarily a white wine country, red wine production surged in the 1990s and early 2000s, primarily fuelled by domestic demand. The proportion of the German vineyards devoted to the cultivation of Pinot Noir –known as Spätburgunder here– has now stabilized at slightly more than a third of the total surface. Austrian Wine A small but essential wine country, full of vibrant whites and savory reds. White Wines Austrian wines are mostly bone-dry white wines with a focus on the Grüner Veltliner grape. While most of the country is focused on austerity, luscious dessert wines are produced around the Neusiedler See. Red Wines The red wines grown in Austria are intriguing and delicious. Despite being a cool climate, about 30% of the wines are red. The principal red wine is Blaufränkisch, also known as Lemberger and Kékfrankos. Other red wines of note are Pinot Noir and Zweigelt. Scandal Austria enjoyed four thousand years of winemaking history. However, that upended in what become known as the “antifreeze scandal” of 1985 when it was revealed that some wine brokers had been adulterating their wines with diethylene glycol. The scandal destroyed the market for Austrian wine, even though no one was injured. However, the scandal has been a force for good in the long term, compelling Austria to tackle low standards of bulk wine production and reposition itself as a producer of quality wines. The country is also home to Riedel, makers of some of the most expensive wine glasses in the world. United States Wine It’s hard to ignore America. We aren’t the largest wine producer, and our history of winemaking is short compared to pretty much everyone else. As individuals, we really don’t drink enough. (although I personally try to make up for the deficit). What we do excel at is how being a huge country with a deep wallet. We buy over 75 billion dollars worth of wine every year. To put that in perspective, we buy more wine annually than the entire GDP of Guatemala. This infusion of cash has allowed American wineries to jump-start our wine trade: it only took us a century to hit our stride. A case in point: If we talked about American wine twenty years ago, we would be talking about Napa and Sonoma. A decade ago, we added Paso Robles and Santa Barbara into the discussion. Now, it would be impossible to talk about American wine without mentioning Oregon’s Willamette Valley, Washington State’s Columbia Valley, and New York’s Finger Lakes. Australian Wine To understand Aussie wines, imagine a roller coaster. For twenty years, the Australians were intent on breaking into the American Market. Then, they slowly pushed that cart uphill by creating a unique wine profile: big jammy and value-driving. Economic Decline By 2006, their wines hit their sales peak. The Aussie brand Yellow Tail was the top-selling wine in America that year, with $621 million in sales. That kangaroo-emblazoned juice was most Americans’ first experience of Australian wines. Sadly, the decline was just as fast. Year after year, sales dropped by around 10% every year since Australia’s imports to the US are below New Zealand, a country that produces less than 25% as many wines. Great Wine Regions For wine lovers, the dimming perception of Aussie wines is a shame. Great wines are hiding behind that great wall of Kangaroo juice. Wine regions like Clare Valley, Margaret River, and the Grampians are some of the greatest in the world. Hopefully, America will wake up from its Shiraz hangover and rediscover Australia soon. South American Wine Regions The two most important South American wine countries are Chile and Argentina. They each import as much wine into the USA as Spain. Chile & Argentina Chile and Argentina have the longest history of winemaking in the Americas. Grapevines were planted in South America by the 16th century, at least a hundred years before Spanish missionaries planted a vineyard in New Mexico (at the time, it was simply Mexico). Wine Styles Stylistically, there has been a lot of cross-pollination with each other and the United States. A contributing factor is that our summers are (literally) polar opposite. For example, winemakers can work harvest in South America in March and then North America in September. Wine regions and types of grapes grown here are expanding at a breakneck speed. A few top picks are Pinot Noir from Chile’s Casablanca Valley and Cabernet Franc from Argentina’s Uco Valley.
