This is a newly formed beach at Columbia Glacier near Valdez, Alaska, and it exists only at low tide. #Columbiaglacier is the largest tidewater glacier in Prince William Sound, but it is retreating quickly....sometimes as much as a mile in a year. When the ice calves off the face of the glacier, it falls hundreds of feet and shatters when it hits the ocean, making a sound very much like a thunderstorm. The ocean here is filled with pieces of glacier ice...some as big as a football field, and some, like these in my photo, are small enough to float close to shore with the high tide, and then get stranded when the tide goes back out. . This pic os from my first time on this beach and it’s likely Mr. YogiPilot and I were the first humans to ever walk this shore...it’s that new, and that remote. As the ice retreats, it deposits rock and sand and silt that forms new beaches, where there was once only ice. . A typical foggy evening at this beautiful Valdez Glacier Lake! We could hear a couple of booming sounds from behind the hills so loud that it scared us and passed chills through our body. Later we learnt that its a very natural phenomenon for glacier ice to break and fall down with loud thuds! In Valdez briefly today. Wish we would have planned another day day. We got in kinda late last night. Went and saw the Solomon Gulch Hatchery. The kids were amazed to see all the salmon trying to get upstream. The we had dinner (very late as usual). The drive down to Valdez is breath taking. Just awesome. Beautiful water falls. Beautiful mountains. They do get an insane amount of snow here though Jeni was reading. We are leaving here this morning after some shopping. Feeling the rear grip while cutting across a wall, you could sense how the track was actually flexing, aiding you from washing out. Even at near vertical sections of the side hill, you could feel the rear fighting for you, trying to keep you stuck onto the slope instead of spitting you out, and down the mountain. This allowed us to slow down, cut slower and more accurate lines, look ahead farther and use much less effort in all aspects of the maneuver. Less effort, more time to plan ahead, and a sled that feels like it’s actually HELPING you ride better, and safer.
