I used to be obsessed with folding unit origami balls (aka kusudamas, although technically that's not the same thing). Nearly all of these were put together from 30 folded units each, without glue. None of these are my designs; the origamists who designed these include Tomoko Fuse, Ekaterina Lukasheva, Valentina Minayeva, Uniya Filonova, Pope Eugene, etc... I don't know if I'll make any more of these any time soon, but it's a great, cheap hobby that I highly recommend.

“Taj Mahal Kusudama” designed by Valentina Minayeva.
Folded by Annalisa from 30 units. Each unit is folded from a 7.5 cm square of duo harmony kami.
Video tutorial available here by @origamifolding.
If you have been around the origami side of tumblr at all, you have seen this kusudama. But do you blame me? It looks amazing. I was going to try and give a shout-out to everyone who has had it on their blog, but when I got to 10 different instances, it was starting to get a little silly. So thank you to everyone who has made this, because every time I saw it pop up on my dash again, I thought “Oh yeah, I want to make that one!”
So I finally made it. And it is just as creative and beautiful as it has looked, lo these many months. That star is so perfect, I can’t get over the brilliant design of it. From using the reverse side of the paper to highlight the star to the braiding effect that is a natural result of the locking mechanism, it is just so well done. The flat faces also make this a rather unique model; usually there’s something sticking out of a kusudama, whether it be a point or a flower detail. I think it’s really interesting to see what lies underneath.
And in the continuing saga of paper roulette, I managed to hit the jackpot! I remain woefully bad at predicting how patterned paper will express itself in a final product, so it’s always a delightful surprise when it works out. I really like how the smallest bits of purple show up in oblique angles of the stars while the acute angles are surrounded by light blue. It adds a really fun depth to the whole look, and someday I’ll be able to say that I did something like that intentionally!

Aelite (Valentina Minayeva)
I am actually very sad with the outcome of this. I ruined it! And it took soooo long. It is suppose to be much nicer than this but I accidentally added an additional fold that just ruined everything. Very sad but too lazy to do another one.
