my work for Valzhang Week Day 1: "canon compliant" and "yearning". featuring hazel, frank's abandonment issues, and the worst thing that can happen to someone: a gay situationship

while working on this, i feel like i thought of a lot of stuff i wanted to say eventually in the notes... but now that i'm here, i can't think of anything except that i hope you all like it!

It wasn’t any wonder why seeing him made Frank’s brain go into overdrive. Ever since he’d moved into the Waystation to live with his new family, Frank had seen him even less and less. Living across the country made it hard to see each other. When he was away, which was most of the time, Frank didn’t think about him. Or at least he tried not to. And sometimes it worked. Sometimes there were days where he could forget about Leo entirely.  (Sometimes he was all Frank could think about. Like what is he doing right now? Does he think about me? Or if he and Calypso had gotten back together. If he’d completed the projects he talked about the last time he’d visited.) (If he was happier. Without Frank. Not that he cared.) But as soon as he came back, it was like everything righted itself. It was as if the world had been at an odd angle the entire time, and Frank had grown used to that, but as soon as he saw Leo again it went back to the way it was supposed to be.

For both prompts of Day 2 of Valzhang Week 2024: The Last Time and Jealousy

As he walks the length of the burnt out room, Leo can picture Frank with his mother, happy and loved and safe and held. All those years more he got than Leo. And as he walks to the stone structure that is still clearly the fireplace, Leo thinks again how Juno had only appeared here once. Leo had gotten her so many times. She'd had such a lighter hand on Frank's life. 

But it occurs to Leo that in a way, Frank was born from this fireplace. He hates the thought. 

But he can't tear himself away even as he hears footsteps shuffling over to him, and he doesn't want to as warm, familiar hands touch him, wrapping around his middle, chin propped on Leo's shoulder. 

"Thank you," Frank says very quietly against his hair. 

Which makes Leo feel guilty, and he has to say, "Don't thank me, I'm being very morbid and kind of selfish up in here."

He gives his head a little wiggle, because it's not like Frank would be able to see him tap his temple. 

"I think you deserve to be, all things considered," Frank tells him. "Thank you for coming with me."

"Duh," Leo says softly, relaxing back into the warmth of his chest.

VALZHANG WEEK 2024

I'm happy to announce this year's Valzhang Week, a ship week dedicated to the pairing of Frank Zhang/Leo Valdez!

It will be held from November 10th to November 17th, and you are welcome to post any kind of work you want—art, fics, moodboards, playlists, etc. There are two prompts per day. You are welcome to choose one or combine both, or interpret them in any way you want.
