   “You want some Chinese? I ordered Chinese. More than enough for one man.” Mean pretty lady is the unanimous moniker among Luis and crew. Not that he blames them for it, not really. People aren’t like locks---there’s no universal skeleton key. No access point scanned by thumbprint. You don’t just jimmy them open with a few parlor tricks and expect to reveal all their secrets. Nah. 

  It takes trust with people, uncut and unabridged. Hope is less a hard nut to crack and more one of those creeping grasses that shrivel and close up the more you poke at them. He’s learned to let her be, let her come around. It’s a slow-going process. Rabbit and the hare. 

  Probably not the right phrase for this situation.

  Scott rolls up the plans for their latest excursion out of the way. Hank’d probably not appreciate Moo Shu sauce all over blueprints and data files. 

  Mean pretty lady. For sure, Hope can be real mean. Can, being the operative word. She’s what kids nowadays call a boss bitch. You don’t get there from holding hands and stepping aside when some douche stomps on your toes. 

  As for pretty? Yeah. Hope’s definitely...definitely pretty. They still haven’t talked about the kiss. Whatever it meant. If it really did mean something. But even with all that trust, all that progress they’ve made in the past few weeks---Hope looks at him like he’s the biggest pain in her ass since the time Dave accidentally hocked some gadget he mistook for spare parts. 

  “Hard work only pays off if you’re not too exhausted to reap the benefits, Hope.” Scott gestures to the seat across the table. “A break won’t kill you.”

    Chewing the inside of his cheek, Peter’s hands are clasped and sat in his lap, trying to avoid playing with them too much-- another nervous tick that he doesn’t need right now. His foot taps against the ground, and his chest feels hollow, the weight that’s been pressing down on his chest ever since he decided to become a hero finally pushing too hard, and managing to CRACK him, seemingly beyond recovery. Maybe the universe is playing some sick game with him or something, trying to see just how MANY times it can break him before he finally shatters for good. This one...it’s a heavy hit. The whole world knows who he is, and on top of that, they think he’s a CRIMINAL. 

    The thought of getting a lawyer sounds like a step in the right direction, but it hardly does anything to ease the anxiety that pools in the pit of his stomach, eyes glassy as he blinks rapidly to try and push every single overwhelming emotion from spilling over the top. A lawyer...he’ll have a case...and maybe even get his name cleared. And even if it doesn’t help much, her words are still reassuring. He appreciates it. 

    “Right....okay-- lawyer. That-- um...should-- should help....thanks...thank you-”
