Taris - Chapter 12
Link to the masterpost. Chapter 11. Chapter 13.
Looks like the Bek base is just a little farther up from the Cantina. Just had a random thought - “Hey, Carth?” And he looks at me. “You remember yesterday at the dueling ring? Things got a little…”
“Yeah, what about it?”
“I hope you don’t mind, but once we get a free minute, I wouldn’t mind dueling again.” And then I shrug. “Even if you do mind, tough, because I want to do it anyway.”
“Hey,” he says, “it’s no problem with me. You just seemed really bothered. I get the feeling it had nothing to do with the dueling anyway.”
“Exactly, I was just a little…”
“Yeah, I get it.” I love that I can have conversations with this guy and not even finish my sentence, he just gets it. Takes a load off my mind, that’s for sure.
There’s a woman standing guard at the door to the Hidden Bek base. Makes sense to me. But since I don’t look like a Black Vulkar, I figure she’ll just let me in, right? Why not? But of course - “Hey, you can't just walk in here! This is the Hidden Bek base. How do I know you're not a Vulkar spy sent to kill Gadon Thek?”
“I’m not a spy!” I protest.
“Maybe so, but this door is locked and it's going to stay that way until I'm satisfied you're no threat to Gadon or the Hidden Beks.”
You know, I get that, that’s fair, but I have business. “I need Gadon's help. I was told to speak to him,” I say to her.
“A lot of people want to go inside and speak to Gadon. He's a hero of the common folk,” she says, “But the days of the Hidden Beks' open-door policy are gone. Between the Sith conquest and the Vulkar gang war Gadon has more enemies than he used to. We're being careful about who we let in now.” That is also fair. But still.
“Maybe I could be an ally against all those enemies,” I say.
“Well, we do need all the help we can get. And you don't look like you're with the Vulkars or the Sith.” That’s what I’m saying! “Besides, it's not like you can do anything to harm Gadon in the heart of his own base. Not with Zaerdra watching his back.” I don’t know who that is, but sure.
“So you’re letting me in?”
“Go in and speak to Gadon if you want. Just remember to be on your best behavior… the Hidden Beks are watching you.” I don’t even plan on doing anything bad and that sounds like a threat. But I head in anyway. Better them watching me than the Vulkars.
Mission’s not anywhere in sight in the base. I guess she and Zaalbar decided to head elsewhere in search of Zaalbar’s breakfast. Or lunch - whatever. I see a man at the far end. If he isn’t Gadon himself - and something tells me he is - then he knows where I might find him. So I walk up to him.
“Hold it right there!” Why do women keep shouting at me? “Who are you and what is your business with Gadon?”
“Calm down, Zaerdra.” See, I knew that man was Gadon. Don’t know how, but I knew. “Nobody is going to try anything here in the middle of our own base. It would be a suicide mission.”
The Twi’lek Zaerdra turns to him. “You're too trusting, Gadon. Brejik and his Vulkars want you dead. Anyone we don't know is a potential threat, and it's my job to make sure you're safe!”
And she’s doing a damn good job, if I do say so myself. “Do you want us to start attacking strangers on sight, Zaerdra – like the Vulkars do? I will never let it come to that! Now step aside and let them pass.” A wise man. I like him.
Reluctantly, she says, “As you wish. You can speak to Gadon if you want, but I've got my eye on you! You try anything and you'll be vaporized before you can say ‘Vulkar spy’!”
“Roger that,” I say, and I move on to Gadon.
“You'll have to forgive Zaerdra,” Gadon says, “Ever since Brejik and the Vulkars began this war against us, she's been a little over-zealous in her security duties. The problems with the Sith haven't helped things. Zaerdra seems to forget that I know how to look after myself! Now, how can I help you?”
“Everyone I talk to says you’re the man who knows what’s going on, and won’t kill me for asking like the Vulkars,” I say, “I heard about some Republic escape pods crashing down in the Undercity. Do you know anything about that?”
“The escape pods? You know, I heard the Sith have been asking around the Upper City about them as well… but you don't look like you're with the Sith.”
(Yeah, because you can’t see!) “They might be spies, Gadon!” Zaerdra urges, “They might be working for the Sith!”
“Calm down, Zaerdra. If the Sith thought we knew anything useful they'd have a battalion of troops kicking down our door. No, I think this offworlder has her own agenda.”
“I’m not working for the Sith, I can assure you of that.” I gesture at Carth. “This guy wouldn’t let me if I wanted to.” Carth, now put on the spot, doesn’t do anything other than an awkward chuckle.
“I suppose I could tell you what I know. It's not like it could do any harm to me or my gang… but it might cause problems for the Vulkars, and that's okay in my book.” This is my kind of guy. Inconveniencing people - that’s my favorite social art. “The Vulkars stripped those pods clean within hours after they landed. It's too bad we didn't get there first, considering what my spies reported the Vulkars found. A female Republic officer named Bastila survived the crash. We Beks don't believe in intergalactic slavery, but the Vulkars aren't so picky. They took her prisoner.”
“Bastila’s a prisoner?” I say quickly, “Do you know what will happen to her?”
“Normally the Vulkars would take a captured slave and sell them for a nice profit to Davik or an off-world slaver. But a Republic officer is no ordinary catch,” Gadon says.
“They still think Bastila is just a Republic officer,” Carth says, “That could work to our advantage. Maybe she'll even figure out a way to escape from the Vulkar base on her own.” I like the way he’s thinking, but I have significant doubts about that happening. And even if she did, I think that would make more problems for us. Right now, as a Vulkar prisoner, there’s only a handful of places she could be. If we operate under the assumption that she escaped, we get to narrow our search to the entire freaking planet.
“She's too valuable to leave with the Vulkar scum at the base,” Gadon says, “Brejik's probably got your Republic friend hidden away somewhere safe until the big swoop race. You'll never find her.”
“Swoop race?” I repeat, “What does that have to do with anything?”
“I'm afraid your friend has become a pawn in Brejik's game to take over the Lower City. He's offered her up as the Vulkar's share of the prize in the annual swoop gang race. By putting up such a valuable prize Brejik hopes to win the loyalty of some of the smaller gangs. Their numbers will allow him to finally destroy me and my followers.”
“So how do you propose we go about rescuing Bastila, then?” Carth says, “We can't fight all the gangs.”
“No, we can’t.” I’ve got some stamina, but even I can’t fight that long. I do have limits.
“The only hope you have of rescuing Bastila is to somehow win the big season opener of the swoop race,” Gadon says.
“I don’t even have a swoop bike,” I say.
“I might be able to help you with this, if you'd be willing to help us. We both have something to gain here – and much to lose,” he says, and I can tell by the look on his face that he is hatching a scheme.
“What are you proposing here?” I ask.
“The swoop race is for the Lower City gangs only,” he explains, “I could sponsor you as a rider for the Hidden Beks this year. If you win the race, you'll win your friend's freedom. But first you have to do something for me.” I knew it wouldn’t be that easy. “My mechanics have developed an accelerator for a swoop engine. A bike with the accelerator installed can beat any other swoop out there! But the Vulkars stole the prototype from us. They plan to use it to guarantee a victory in this year's swoop race. I need you to break into their base and steal it back.”
“How am I supposed to get inside the Vulkar base?” I ask, “I saw the entrance when I came down, but it looked to be locked up tight.”
“Getting into the Vulkar base won't be easy – you’re right, the front doors are locked tight. But I know someone who might be able to get you in the back way – Mission Vao.”
That’s the Twi’lek I met earlier - is he serious? “Mission?” Zaerdra protests, “Gadon, you can't be serious! She's just a kid – how is she supposed to help them with this?”
“Mission's explored every step of every back alley in the Lower City. Plus she knows the Undercity sewers better than anyone. If anyone can get inside the Vulkar base, it's her,” Gadon says.
“I just saw her in the Cantina,” I say, “Do you know where I can find her now?”
“She and her Wookiee friend Zaalbar are always looking to stir up a little excitement. They like to go exploring in the Undercity, despite the dangers. Your best bet is to look for her in the Undercity. But you'll need some way past the Sith guard post at the elevator.”
“I got past the Upper City guard, no problem - I’ll just put my Sith disguise back on,” I say with a shrug.
“A simple disguise might have worked on the Upper City guard,” Gadon says, “but the security down here is much tougher. You'll need the proper papers to get past him.” Great, another quest. “Luckily my gang ambushed one of the Sith patrols headed down to the Undercity. They never made it, and their security papers fell into my hands. Since we're working together now I suppose I could give them to you in exchange for your uniforms. With the security papers you won't need a disguise anyway.”
“Okay, fine, I'll trade the uniforms for the papers.” Don’t need the uniform anyway, if I have the papers.
“Good choice. Thanks for the uniforms. You won't need them with these security papers anyway. Now, is there anything else I can do for you?”
“No,” I say, “that should do me. I will be back when I have that accelerator.”
“I suggest you hurry. The swoop race is coming up, and we want you to have time to practice before the race.”
You know, I was never into sports, but I seem to find myself in the middle of it. What sort of life is this - when I signed on to the Republic, this is not what was in the job description.
On the other hand, if I knew there’d be this much moving around, I might have joined sooner.

Why Hire A Virtual Assistant? An Online That!
Entrepreneurs preferring flexibility, flexibility as well as the ease of activity are now throwing the fad of working out of the confines of a physical office complex. Rather they are selecting office movement and also employing Digital Office Assistants/Virtual Assistants to do the job of a typical office worker, with sometimes twice the favorable outcome. This does not imply staff members slouch, not doing their fair share of the work, companies are shooting their traditional staff members or the principle of a staff member is becoming obsolete or antiquated. On the other hand! It just means business owners are having to do even more with much less and are discovering means to enhance efficiency with a contracted out, supplemental labor force so they can remain ahead of their competitors. In other words the concept of work-sharing and also outsourcing has evolved. Yet what exactly is a Virtual Assistant, what functions do they play within your company, how do they contribute to increased performance and positively raise your profits, why do you need one and also why should you have one?
Tumblr media
What is an Online Assistant/Virtual Office Assistant?
Research study on this subject issue usually lead one to a variety of definitions however what all of it come down to is this - a Virtual Assistant/Virtual Workplace Assistant (abbrev VA/VAO) is a business owner who offers specialized specialist services to Clients in a collaborative long-term connection while functioning remotely. I can virtually hear you business owners claiming now "so exactly how is this various ... well other than the remote workplace thingy of course"?
It is completely different in numerous methods as Virtual Assistants are Independent Service Providers and NOT WORKER OR temperature and because of this are able to benefit greater than one customer at the same time and over an infinite period, relying on the nature of the relationship as well as service being offered.
Virtual Assistants are expert Independent Professionals as well as NOT Employees OR Temps, is a very crucial certifying distinction that needs acknowledgment, for unlike staff members, Virtual Assistants are needed to supply their very own training, "virtual" tools, equipment, office space as well as feature as a business owner.
Making use of modern-day wise internet based "cloud" calculating innovations to communicate with Customers as well as total tasks/projects are the right hands as well as friends of VAs as well as function really prominently in their globe. Unlike the employees of a well-known physical company, VAs are responsible for their very own ability training, as well as staying up to date on one of the most efficient and also effective tools as well as or devices of their profession. They take part in countless hrs of research study to be able to satisfy the demands of their clients and as practicing Independent Contractors they are responsible for their entire operation and the top quality of their service shipment. Virtual Assistants function as solopreneurs or within multi-va techniques.
The Duty of An Online Assistant/Virtual Workplace Assistant
A Digital Assistant/Virtual Office Assistant services could consist of such points as workplace management; technological or innovative assistance such as graphic layout, web design, logo design development, internet site development, web site upkeep and also or the production of company identification packages, and so on. They function as literal "seeming boards" for business owners when they have those sometimes crazy, goofy concepts, can be the ultimate resourceful "go-to-person" for hard to locate study information, serve as a liaison between their customer and their customer's client to take care of consumer relationships, however most of all they are the ones who entrepreneurs rely on, to obtain those very important, critical time consuming as well as sometimes unanticipated after hours jobs and also tasks finished and VAs are greater than pleased to tackle the workload.
Tumblr media
So how do VAs raise efficiency as well as add favorably to your bottom line you ask! With less of a workload on your plate you are free to take part in fun and also relaxing activities with family and friends, you are less worried, no longer require to count on food to fill up the void, you are much less likely to end up being overweight and also overweight and also suffer from countless wellness difficulties (ever before heard of a little old program called the Largest Looser) as well as you are a throughout happier person to be around with a much better quality balanced work-life all as a result of your Virtual Assistant. However do not mind me rather let us stop briefly and also analyze a scenario for a moment. I will certainly use one of my preferred real life examples right here, one I like to call the entrepreneur's nightmare. To find more guides and tips about virtual assistants, click here.
You are an entrepreneur with a profitable business whose brand has such a big complying with locally within the location in which you operate, an area outdoors and also away from your most fierce rivals, a benefit to any organization and its proprietor. You have actually spent years taking your niche, developing partnerships and also expanding by leaps as well as bounds up until you dominate your neighborhood market.
You decide because being so effective for all these decades it is time to "have fun with the big guns in the intense lights of the city" and also make the move without hesitating. Oops! There is one little imperfection to your strategy though - You did not examine the marketplace demographics and also or explore the geographical location into which you are now running head long. Not since you did not intend to, you did not know you have to, or you did not know it is the right point to do however due to the fact that it was too much of a pricey workout in regards to employee hrs and also sources to conduct a detailed competitive market evaluation, considering the moment frame with which you were dealing. You believe the weight as well as "good faith" worth of your brand name, your faithful clients, most of whom are set in hardship and depending upon your solutions will certainly follow you and you will certainly make it even though signs are impending the marketplace will bottom out on the European continent. Ha-Ha you laugh however I am not situated on the European continent. I get on the other side of the pond, operating solely within the Americas hemisphere therefore you remain to pack. Oh, oh however you ignored the little "designed thing" we like to call globalization - Europe catches the bug, an additional catch the influenza and after that the whole world is "economically sick" and also trends have actually revealed that this has happened like clock job every 10 years only with a different factor of beginning.
Tumblr media
You relocate but whether you recognize it or not, your relocation is timed ideal slap at the cusp of the upcoming ten years anniversary. Completion outcome of your unforeseen move is that within twelve month you start to experience financial contamination and also missteps as well as within 19 months you have to fold. So what would a VA have done to assist guide your end result differently you muse!
Why Do You Need A VA?
Does the above circumstance sound familiar to you entrepreneurs available? I make sure it does and also as possible as this might not sound to you now, there are business owners that will find themselves in such a circumstance but a Virtual Assistant can help. VAs have actually shown extremely beneficial to local business owners whose above costs can be expensive in today's unclear and also volatile economic environment as well as who need to make an unfavorable decision as the one depicted in the situation above.
Contracting out jobs and jobs consisting of those that are supremely technical maximizes time and sources, empowers entrepreneurs to engage in even more tactical as well as capability building workouts whose end result can assist balance operational expenses and the business profits. It is currently more the standard to have VAs as a part of a business owner's team. Let me know if you need translations! -- Feedback appreciated!!! -- edits and fanart too!!!
Watching everyone rushing to make food and set the table couldn’t be more painful. Lance felt like he was falling apart and he couldn’t show it. He couldn’t bring himself to disappoint them.
He’d rehearsed so many times. As he worked on his mom’s car, as he showered, as he got dressed, and as he watched. But it never made it easier. Not once, did it feel like he could tell them without bile rising up in his throat.
His little cousins were running around the adults, being ushered out to the front yard, but they were too hyped to listen. Suddenly, his cousin Lily shrieked and began bawling. “Guys, give her back her doll,” Lance scolded the two twins that were her older brothers. “You know how she gets, and unless you want me to tell Tia Carla what you did-”
“Ugh, Lance you’re the same as before you went to college,” Jose grumbled, tossing back the doll.
“Just go back to college,” Jesus, the other, muttered, sticking his tongue out. They ran out, screaming after their other cousins.
Lance sighed and mumbled, “Wish I could, buddy.” He went to be sure the kids weren’t fighting. The boys were running, and the girls were playing with dolls. Until Lance’s brother, Miguel, decided to pull their cousin Rosa’s pigtail and began a gender war of tag. He shook his head and turned back to look at the house. His tios were drinking, claiming to toast to them. His tias and his mom were cooking, gossiping in Spanish. His Papo was asleep on the couch with a cup of soda in his hand. His buela was cleaning, setting out a new mantel for the table.
It was too much. It was way too much. Despite the humid heat, Lance left the house and went to the back where the dogs were. At his Papo’s house, they had a chicken coop. Lance hated those chickens. He could still hear the shrieks of laughter and anger from the kids in the front, but from where he stood, Lance could close his eyes and pretend that it was a normal day. That he wasn’t about to drop the worst news in months to his family. That he wasn’t about to explain what a failure he was, and how he didn’t deserve anything they were doing for him.
He could pretend he had never gone to college, that it was last summer and he was filled with hope to envision all the possibilities the future would bring. He was still Lance, the jokester, the fun cousin, the fun brother, the troublemaking son, the smart one.
“Lance!” one of his tias called. “Your friend is here!” Lance frowned and went inside, surprised to see Keith at his front door with his tios and tias and mother and buela surrounding him, inviting him, offering things, asking him questions.
“Oh God,” he muttered. He interceded and made his family back off. “Come on. I’ll introduce you, but you don’t have to remember.” He gestured to his uncles. “That’s my tio Angel, my tio Selso, and my tio Ramon. Tio Angel is my mom’s brother. Tios, this is… my friend, Keith.” Keith waved and shook each of their hands, refusing the beer they offered. “That’s my Papo, you met him.”
“Won’t that glass fall?” he questioned.
“No. He always falls asleep with a cup of something in his hand.” He pointed. “That’s Buela Prudencia. I call her Buela.” He took Keith to the kitchen and pointed. “Mom at the stove. Tia Carla’s dicing, she’s the restaurant owner. Tia Lourdes. They’re Mom’s sisters.” He coughed and gestured to Keith. “This is my friend Keith. Please don’t smother him.”
“Cabron,” his tia Lourdes said with a swat of his arm. “Hi Keith, it’s so nice to meet you.” Keith smiled nervously and nodded. “I hope you’re hungry.”
“Very,” he said.
Lance hurried him out and pointed to the kids. “My sisters, Emily, Jackie, and Alexia. My brother Jorge. I call him Bobo. The twins, Jose and Jesus belong to tia Carla with my cousin Lily in the pigtails. The other kids are tia Lourdes’ kids. Rosa, Diana, the girls. Ricky and Victor, the boys. And the other little boy there is my tio Angel’s kid, Saulo.”
“That’s… a lot of kids.”
“And it’s just the little ones. I have older cousins, but I pretend they don’t exist.” He shrugged and gestured him back inside. “Dogs are in the back. Quique and Luna.” He sat down on the bench outside. “So… why are you here?” he asked.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean…. You don’t remember me from high school. You don’t know me at all, but you agreed to have dinner with my family. All I did was wait your table and fix your car. Why are you here, what do you want?”
Keith frowned and crossed his arms as he looked out at the road. “Food, I guess. Look, I got invited, so I came. You want me to go?” He almost said yes. But he wasn’t sure how to explain that to his family either. Besides, if Keith stayed, then maybe Lance wouldn’t have to tell his family he dropped out. “Do you?” he asked.
Lance looked at him and felt his cheeks warm. “No. Not really.” Keith took a breath and nodded as he slumped in his seat and kicked at the ground. “I’m just… dealing with stuff right now.”
“It’s cool,” he said. “You want to talk about it?”
Before he could answer, his tia Carla came barging out and screaming. “Ya esta la comida! Vengan a comer!” Keith and Lance had both cringed as she went back in.
Keith looked over at him. “I take it dinner’s ready?” Lance nodded and nudged him before standing. They walked in and Lance found himself sitting across from Keith. The kids were on one end of the table and his aunts and uncles sat around him. At the head of the table were Papo and Buela.
Everyone began serving themselves from the food available in large dishes along the center of the table. Before they could all really dig in, Lance’s mother stopped them. “Wait, wait! No toquen esa comida, werquitos!” The kids stopped midbite. “We can’t forget who this is for.” Lance gulped and felt his chest constrict. “Mijo,” she said proudly. “My little boy, all grown up. Back from college. The first of all of us to go. You’re leading a better life, mijo, which is all I could’ve ever wanted for you. You’re the best role model for your siblings and your cousins. And I love you so, so much.” Her voice broke and Lance already felt his tears spilling over. And she wrapped him into a hug and smoothed down his hair. “I know, I know, I’m sorry. I know you hate when I get like this, but I’m just so proud of you.” She hugged him tightly and Lance was grateful because if she hadn’t, everyone would’ve seen how hard he was shaking. “Don’t cry. We don’t want your friend to get uncomfortable.” She kissed his forehead and sat back down. “Okay, eat!” she said with a teary smile.
Everyone lunged for the food except for Lance. He was trying to stop the guilt from eating him. It took a swift kick from Keith under the table for him to start piling food onto his plate. He picked at his food and ate as everyone around him started their questions.
“So what are you studying? Will it get you a good paying job?”
“When do you graduate? When can we get tickets?”
“Is it true that the parties are crazy?”
“Remember, you have to stay focused on school, no girls.” His tia Carla nudged him and winked on the other side of him, as did his mother. The women in the family were far more understanding.
“I just knew you’d get this far, mijo,” Buela said. She didn’t talk much, but when she did, everyone listened. “You’re going to be somebody, Lance,” she said certainly, breaking Lance’s heart further. “Dime, were your teachers impressed? You were number three in school here. I wouldn’t be surprised if you were number one when you graduate.”
“And speaking of graduating, we need to start saving if everyone’s going to go.”
“What about after graduation? What are you gonna do? Tell me you’re not just gonna live here again. You got out for a reason,” one of his uncles said.
Lance kept his mouth full of food he couldn’t eat just to keep from answering. “What about you, Keith? Do you go to college?” his mother asked, finally removing the focus from him.
“Uh, yeah- yes, ma’am. I go to the community college. I want to transfer to a university for my junior year. Community college is just cheaper right now, which is what I need.”
“Lance here is at a private college,” his papo bragged. “He got scholarships.”
“That’s really good,” Keith said with a sincere smile.
“Una porra pa’ el futuro licenciado!” A cheer for the future graduate.
“Stop,” Lance choked.
“A la vio, a la vao!”
“Stop,” he said a little louder. But he couldn’t compete with his family’s roar.
“A la bim-bom- ba! Lance! Lance!”
“I got kicked out!” he shouted, standing, silencing them. He stared at his plate, unable to breathe. “I’m not in college,” he croaked. “I messed up. I’m just another drop out.” He swallowed and felt his tears slide down his face. “I’m sorry.”
He turned away before he could break completely, before the shouting could start, before his mother’s or his buela’s crying could start. He couldn’t look at any of them. He left the house and prayed that no one followed him. He sat on the steps and felt sobs rack his body.
He hadn’t even heard when someone walked out behind him, until they were sitting beside him. “Want to go somewhere?” Keith asked.
Lance wiped his nose with the back of his hand. “Why are you here?” he hissed. “Just go.”
It was quiet for a moment. Then, “I remember you. From school. You were the guy that pantsed Coach Reyes.” Lance shut his eyes and scowled. “And then you cried for a half hour outside of Principal Miller’s office. But when you got called in, you stopped, and you took a breath and you went in. You were in there almost all period. Then you came out, eyes red, smiling. I’d have thought you were high if your nose hadn’t been running.” Lance looked over at him and furrowed his eyebrows. Keith looked at him. “I was in the office that day. I was an office aide and… I guess you hadn’t seen me. But I’d heard of you, and you’d never been in the office before so….” Keith scooted closer. “I’d always wanted to talk to you, but… you were so smart I didn’t think I could without sounding stupid. You just… you had your life made. Teachers respected you. I was the kid teachers glared at because they thought the phone ringing was mine. It was theirs.”
Lance scoffed and shook his head. “Why would you want to talk to me?” he muttered.
“It seemed like you were the only one who wasn’t trying to get laid or high. You were one of the few nice enough with actual goals in your life.”
They heard the increase of shouting inside and muffled arguing. “Where should we go?” Lance asked, unable to sit there and listen to his family fall apart because of him. Keith twirled his keys and nudged him as he stood and walked to his car.
Lance followed without looking back and slid into the passenger seat.
**
Keith drove with ease. One hand on the steering wheel, the other resting on the door as he chewed on his nails. He leaned back, his head against the window. “So, this is a stupid question, but… why didn’t you tell them?” he asked once they’d driven nowhere for a while.
Lance hugged himself and rubbed his head. “You heard them. I was the one who got to leave, first-generation student, I…. I was the role model. And then I went and fucked it up.”
“How did that happen?” he asked. There was no judgement in his voice, no pity. Just curiosity.
“I couldn’t keep up. Aside from scholarships, I had to work for the money. I kept missing work, which was fine at first… but after a month, my professors weren’t so sure I was being honest. So I started slipping. And then I lost my scholarships and… I couldn’t keep going without offering the devil my soul.” He leaned against the window. “I dropped out in March. And I’ve been crashing with different friends, working to pay them back for letting me stay, and pretending I was still in college. I wanted to tell them, but… I was so fucking scared. I don’t want to disappoint them. I didn’t want them to know that all my dreams were for nothing.”
“Dude,” Keith interrupted. “You talk like… like you can’t try again. Get more scholarships and get in another if not the same college. Write a killer essay about why you fucked up before and get back in. Online classes. You’re not a deadbeat or a failure for messing up. You’re only a failure if you don’t bother trying again.” Lance stared at him and sighed. “You can’t give up on all your dreams just because it got shitty. That’s when you fight most, and prove you deserve to get what you want. It’s not gonna get handed to you all wrapped in a nice bow.”
“Oh what you think that’s how life is? You think I’m making excuses?” he shouted at him. “You think I haven’t had to fight all my life for people to take me seriously? Everyone expected me to join a gang or knock some chick up- thank God I like boys too, it kept my mom from freaking anytime I dated- or to just inherit the stupid shop or the fucking restaurant, okay. Everyone just expects my life to be this, to be here, in this shitty part of Houston no one gives a shit about and where people show up dead in a ditch for Univision to broadcast on!” He ran a hand through his hair and felt the anger make his limbs shake. “I had to fight to stay in advanced classes in each shitty low-grade public school I went to, I had to fight to be in enough extracurriculars while still getting home in time to watch all those kids, help them with homework, feed them, and still get my own done. I didn’t whine and bitch when I had three hours of sleep before a final. I didn’t care that my dad ran off when I was starting high school and left my mom with all those kids on her own, because I knew I could step up. I’m not excusing my fuck ups with my life, okay? So don’t you dare make me seem like I’m playing the victim, Keith. Don’t you dare.”
It was quiet for a while and then Keith started laughing. Lance stared at him incredulously, but Keith just kept laughing and shaking his head. They’d parked at a What-A-Burger and the lights reflected of his violet eyes as he laughed. “I’m sorry,” he finally said through a chuckle. “It’s just…. I didn’t realize I’d wake this ferocious beast just by telling you to fight for what you want.” Lance scowled and looked away. “Hey.” He felt Keith’s hand on his arm. “I wasn’t painting you as the victim. I just… you sounded defeated. And I wanted to show you that you still had fight left in you. And you obviously do.” Lance furrowed his eyebrows and Keith smiled at him. “You messed up. Fine. So try again. This was your first try. Not every kid works a bunch while going to college their first year.”
Lance took a breath and nodded. He let his head fall back against the seat and shook his head. “I just… I can’t go back, knowing that they’ll look at me like….” He couldn’t even put it into words. But it made him want to cry nonetheless. “I disappointed them, Keith. I let them down. And I hid it for a long time, how are they going to forgive me?”
Keith bit his lip and shrugged. “It’ll be rough for a bit, yeah. But… based on what I saw? They love you so fucking much, it’s crazy. They’ll forgive you. They’ll help you. They’ll understand. They’ll be hurt you didn’t tell them, but… they won’t shut you out. They won’t hate you.” Keith let him mull over that for a while until Lance was ready to go back.
Instead, Lance looked over and asked, “Why’d you pretend you didn’t know me if you did?”
Keith seemed shocked by the question. His eyebrows went up and he looked over at Lance with his mouth half-open. He grimaced and scratched his neck. “It took me a moment to place you. You were usually really loud and… obnoxious if I’m honest.” Lance scoffed. “You’re quieter. I know why now, but…. I didn’t realize it was you until I brought back the tip. And then… I just didn’t bring it up.”
“So you remember me as the guy that pantsed the coach then cried about it in the principal’s office,” Lance said with a scoff.
“No,” he answered, sounding shocked. “No, I…. I remember you as the guy who knew how to get what he wanted. You were crying, but… you managed to convince the principal not to give you a punishment for that. And you apologized to Coach too. Lance… I remember you as the guy with the determined blue eyes and easygoing smile that never took no for an answer and owned up to his actions.” Lance gulped and stared at Keith, feeling the familiar flutter in his stomach he used to get back in high school around him.
“Oh,” he said weakly. They both looked out at the diner and seemed to grow smaller in the silence. Lance’s heart was beating fast, and he suddenly never wanted Keith to go away. He knew what to say, and how to make him see things differently. And Lance hadn’t met someone like that in a long time.
“Do you… want to get food?” Keith asked softly.
Lance shook his head, suddenly self-conscious and nervous. “No…. I think I should go home. I can’t run forever.” Keith nodded and started driving back.
When they reached his house, he parked and asked, “Want me to get out with you?”
“No. It’s fine. They’re my family, so I should… deal with them. Besides, half of it might be Spanish and then I’d lose you.” Keith laughed and shrugged.
“Maybe you can teach me, then.” Lance bit back a smile at the idea of seeing Keith again if only to teach him Spanish.
“Sounds like a plan, Mullet,” he said. “Thanks.” Keith nodded and Lance took a deep breath before he walked into the house again.
“Where have you been, carajo!” his tia Lourdes hissed, pinching his shoulder as soon as he walked in. Lance yelped, and rubbed his arm as everyone else came in.
“There he is, the non-college boy,” one of his cousins teased.
“Too good to be a worker like the rest of us, or what?” his tio Selso said. “Running out the door como una marica.” Lance winced and was grateful when his tia Lourdes yanked his ear and scolded him.
“Lance,” his mother said tiredly, shutting everyone up. “What happened?”
Gathering strength, he began to explain how he ended up getting kicked out of school. He explained it all with no excuses, solely facts and kept talking even when his mother’s tears began.
“So you just stayed at your friend’s like some kind of beggar?” she cried. “Why didn’t you tell us?”
“Because I didn’t want to let you down!”
“Oh, that worked out great, didn’t it?” his brother muttered. Lance couldn’t even bring himself to punch him.
“So you have us making you this big dinner, celebrating you, and you weren’t going to say anything?”
“I wanted to,” he began. But the look on her face, and on his grandparents’ faces silenced him. “I’m sorry. I messed up. But I can try again. Apply again, get scholarships again, explain what happened.”
“You think they’ll give you anything? With the grades you finished with and the way you dropped out? You had your high school grades and rank going for you before. Now, you have nothing!” Lance tried not to show how much his mother’s words hurt him.
“Ma, I’m not giving up,” he whispered. She clenched her jaw and stared him with watery blue eyes.
“Oye, pues no somos una familia?” Tia Carla said. “We’re Mexicans. We don’t give up. We don’t just sit back. And as a family, we support each other.” She put a hand on his shoulder. “We have the restaurant. We have the shop. Lance can make the money he needs. And we can help him. I have Beto’s college fund that he never used.”
“Tia, you want to open your salon-”
“Callate, chingado,” she hissed at him. Lance promptly shut up. She looked at the others with a ferocity he’d always admired in her. “We’re not letting him deal with this alone. Not after all these years. He wants to fight. God knows Beto didn’t. Did Carlos? Did Benny or Esmeralda or Vanessa?” His aunts and uncles looked down in shame at the mention of their older kids.
Beto was always drunk, never where he should be. Carlos had died in a gang fight in high school. Benny was quiet and never called, and he worked at the gas station the next county over. Esmeralda had gotten pregnant in high school and Vanessa never wanted to go to college. She married her boyfriend and moved out, and they only heard from her on the holidays.
“Lance is here. He’s fighting. And he needs help even if el pendejo doesn’t ask for it.” Lance sighed and shook his head at his tia. “So we’re gonna help him. I don’t want any of you talking down to him because at least he’s trying! Me oyeron?” They did. They had no choice but to hear her.
“Do the dishes, Lance. We’ll sort everything out tomorrow,” his mother said. “Kids, get ready for bed.” His aunts and uncles left with their kids and his Buela and Papo stayed behind while his mom got the kids settled.
They walked over to him and Lance began shaking his head before the money was put in his hands. “Take it,” Buela insisted, pressing the crisp hundred dollar bill into his hand.
“Buela,” he moaned. “No. I don’t deserve it.”
“You’re fighting. You deserve it more than anyone,” she said firmly. “You use this, and you open a savings account, and you work hard and keep putting money in it. You’re going to be somebody, mijo. I know it.” Lance couldn’t speak so he just nodded and pocketed his money.
“I love you,” he said, pulling her into a hug. “And Papo, I’ll be at the shop after the restaurant every day. I’ll help you. Forget Beto.”
“I know you will,” he said. “Be patient with your mother.” He patted his shoulders and they left. Since they lived down the street, they always walked.
Lance did the dishes and cleaned the kitchen and the table. By the time his siblings were asleep, and he’d finished cleaning, his mom was sitting at the couch with a rosary and a tissue. He walked over to her and kneeled in front of her, cupping her hands and the crisp, quick prayer slipped through her thin, pursed lips.
“Ma,” he murmured. “Ma, look at me.” She did. “I know I messed up. I know I disappointed you. But I won’t let you down again. I’m gonna fight. Like I always do.” She blinked and nodded, pulling him into a hug. The rosary beads dug into his back, but he didn’t mind. Not when his mother was holding him, making him feel like he was five years old again.

via Today Bharat Anuradha's accident had been reported in November 2019, just two months after a techie, Subashree died as a banner fell on her while she was riding her bike in Chennai. nbsp;The Tamil Nadu government has given Anuradha alias Rajeswari, who lost her leg in Coimbatore last year, in an accident allegedly involving an AIADMK flag pole, a government job. The 30-year-old whose leg was amputated has been offered a position in the district VAO's office that she has accepted. Anuradha's accident had been reported in November, just two months after a techie, Subashree died as a banner fell on her while she was riding her bike in Chennai. Anuradha too allegedly lost control of her vehicle after a flag pole struck her on her head. She then came under a lorry, which ran over one of her legs. State local administration Minister SP Velumani met Rajeswari at the Coimbatore district collectorate on Friday and gave her the appointment order for the position of village assistant in Sanganur. Speaking to TNM, a relative says that she woke up in shock after the surgery was conducted to remove her leg. She has been undergoing extensive psychological and physical therapy to recover from the incident. "The doctors warned us that it will take a long time for her to heal both mentally and physically. She is still coming to terms with what has happened," says the relative. When asked if she remembers the alleged involvement of a flag pole in her fall, he says, "Yes, she says, she was hit on the head but we are not going to harp on this. The local AIADMK took care of the whole hospital expenses of Rs. 16 lakh. They will also take care of any future medical expenses. And we also have insurance money to claim. Right now, fighting against the system is not going to help her cause. She has a government job as well and will write exams and get promotions. We have to look out for her future.rdquo; The new job will pay her a basic salary of Rs.16,000, says her relative. "In her earlier job too, she was getting just Rs.18,000. But now there is security and a scope to grow. We just want her to move ahead in life and not dwell on what is irreversible.rdquo; nbsp; nbsp;

Taris - Chapter 11 (Mission)
Link to the masterpost. Chapter 10. Chapter 12.
Wow, I’m pretty shaken from that. But the other cantina patrons don’t think much about it, beyond stepping over the dead bodies. I can feel Carth behind me almost lay his hand on my shoulder, but I’m not that shaken. Not shaken enough that I can’t get myself out of it.
I hear a girl shout to my left. “I told you to leave me alone – so give me some space, Bug-eye! Your breath smells like bantha poodoo!” Women getting harassed in bars - nothing ever changes. I should see if I can lend a hand - us girls gotta stick together, right?
“Little girl should not be in bar. This no place for little girl. If little girl smart, she run away home now,” I hear a Rodian say. Probably the one harassing her.
Hang on, hang on - did he say “little girl”?
“Who you calling a little girl, Chuba-face?” Now I’m thinking I should definitely get involved here. She doesn’t sound that young, but still - don’t harass women in bars.
She’s a Twi’lek, with quite an attitude. Sounds like my kind of girl. (A little young, of course, but I digress.) I’ve dated Twi’leks before - nothing too serious, mind you - and in my experience the men are always a little stuck up, but the women? Twi’lek women have spunk, and they tend to be wasted as dancing girls and slaves. (Of course, everyone’s wasted as a slave, but it just seems an added cruelty to take a Twi’lek and shoehorn them into that role. Sure, they’ve got sex appeal, if you’re into that sort of thing, but hey, so do I, and people don’t try to shoehorn me into the role of dancing girl or slave.)
“Little girl needs lesson in manners!” the Rodian says.
“Just a sec, boys. Zaalbar... a little help here?” Who’s Zaalbar? “I need you to rip the legs off some insects.”
And then I hear a Wookiee. Ah-ha. That must be Zaalbar. “Mission – I'm busy. They just brought my food!”
“Quit complaining... you can finish eating later,” the Twi’lek - Mission - says, “Besides, you need the exercise so get over here.”
“We no want trouble with Wookiee,” the Rodian says, “Our problem with you, little girl!”
“You got a problem with me, then you got a problem with Big Z. So unless you want to take on my furry friend, I suggest you greenies hop on out of here.” I like this girl very much.
“Little girl lucky she has big friend,” the Rodian says dejectedly, and he and his buddy hightail it out of there.
I can tell, this girl has the lowdown on everything. You know how people sometimes just have that way about them where you can tell they just know a lot? I don’t know how to describe it. But whatever it is, this girl has it. So of course I go up and talk to her.
“Say, I don't recognize you and I know pretty much everyone in the Lower City. You must be new down here. I guess that makes me and Big Z your official welcoming committee!”
“I am pretty new down here, I just got here,” I say, “Let me tell you, I did not expect to run into Calo Nord, though.”
“Yeah, he’s been down here a lot lately,” she says, “I figure Calo's been hired by Davik to do a special job for the Exchange. I'd wager a thousand credits that as soon as the quarantine ends, he'll be getting off this rock.”
“You showed a lot of guts dealing with those Vulkars, kid,” Carth says. Oh-ho-ho, sounds like Dad-mode to me. “You got a name?”
“My name's Mission Vao and this big Wookiee is my best friend, Zaalbar. I'd offer to give you a tour, but the streets down here aren't safe. But if there's anything else you need…”
“Actually, there is,” I say, taking back the conversation from Dad over there, “I want to ask you some questions, if I can.”
“Well you came to the right person! If you want info on Lower Taris I'm the one to talk to!” That’s exactly what I was hoping for! I knew she’d have the low-down on the Lower City. (That was great, I should be a writer.) “Davik, the Lower City gangs... I've even got the scoop on that bounty hunter Calo Nord!”
“I don’t need to know any more about Calo Nord, but I am curious about the gangs down here,” I say.
“There's only two gangs worth worrying about here in the Lower City: the Black Vulkars and the Hidden Beks. Sometimes Zaalbar and I hang out at the Bek base.”
“Okay, so the Beks are cool? I wasn’t sure, and I didn’t want to get involved with the wrong group by accident.”
“Yeah, they’re alright. The Beks are led by Gadon Thek – he's a good guy. Lost his sight in a swoop bike accident a few years ago, but even blind he's a great leader. Not like that traitor Brejik! Before he took over the Vulkars he was a Hidden Bek. Gadon considered that ungrateful space slug his adopted son.”
“If the Beks are so great, why did Brejik leave, do you know?” I ask. More curious than anything else.
“When Gadon went blind everyone figured he'd step down and appoint Brejik in his place. But Gadon figured Brejik wasn't ready yet. He wanted him to wait a few years. But Brejik was too impatient.” Ah, power-hungry. Tears people apart. “He left to join the Vulkars, and ever since he's been waging a war to wipe Gadon and his Beks from the face of Taris! The gang war in the Lower City is totally the Vulkar's fault. They're the ones killing everything that moves out on the street. It's like they've gone insane.”
“Yeah, I’ve noticed that,” I say, “Well, thank you so much, Mission, that was exactly what I needed to know. And it was the easiest time I’ve had so far getting information.” She smiles at me. I really like her. “I think I’d better get going. I’ve got a lot to do.”
“You're going? Yeah, this dive is pretty boring. No action around here.” No action? Girl, you were just harassed by two Rodians five minutes ago. What do you mean, “no action?” “Come on, Big Z, let's go.”
“But I haven't finished eating!” the Wookiee complains.
“Can't you think about something besides your stomach for five minutes? Come on – we'll go see if there's anything good to eat at the Bek base.” Ahh, friendship.
Well, that was certainly easier than I thought it was going to be. I figured I’d have to listen in to five different conversations to get even a start on figuring out what the situation is down here. And what do I find instead but a very pretty Twi’lek who knows everything about the Lower City?
I sort of want to go to the Hidden Bek base, too, but I don’t want Mission to think I’m following her. I don’t want to be that kind of creep. So I find my way into the music room instead. Oof - Twi’lek dancers again. One of these days, I’d like to see literally any other species dancing in that scant little outfit. (Maybe like Carth… oh, shut up, Rena.)
Whoa, dude! You just crashed into me, watch where you’re going! Not Carth, no - some asshole. God, he looks like he’s been trouble for more than one woman. “Huh? What? Oh... sorry. I didn't see you there,” he says - what a fake apology - “My attention was kind of focused on the Twi'lek dancers. Look at them waggle those head-tails!”
And then he gets a good look at me. Here we go, I think with a sigh. Now he’s my problem. “Don't worry, honey – alien girls aren't really my thing. I'm much more interested in an attractive female of my own species.”
I can almost hear Carth puff up behind me. It’s sweet that he cares, but I think he knows by now that if some dude gives me trouble, I know exactly where his balls are. “And who would you be?”
“My name's Holdan, baby. Maybe you've heard of me... I work for Davik Kang, you know.”
“Yeah, that’s nice,” I say diplomatically - you know, the polite way of saying “piss off.”
“I feel like I’ve heard your name before,” Carth says, like he’s just sick of this guy talking. Then he turns to me. “When I was scouting around the other day, I talked to some of the other residents of the apartment. Some girl named Dia, said she had a bounty on her head. Did you do that?”
“You're here about that?” Holdan says, and I’m not sure if he’s looking at me or Carth, “Fair enough – I don't care who takes her out, just so long as the job gets done. I can't let her get away with what she did – that wench tried to cut me with her vibroblade!”
Aha, so he has been trouble for a woman before. “Why would she do that?” I ask, and I think I already know the answer, no matter what he says it is - he’s a bit of a schutta, if you know what I mean.
“Because she's crazy! She started screaming that I was making advances, and the next thing I know she's coming at me with a knife.”
Sounds like something I’d do, if we’re being honest. “Yeah, right,” Carth scoffs, “Sounds to me like she was defending herself.”
“I admit I was drunk. Maybe I got a little fresh. But it was no big deal. She didn't have to cut me!”
Sounds to me like he got what he deserved. But that’s no reason to put a bounty on a girl’s head. “What would I have to do to persuade you to take that bounty off her head?”
“What? I can't do that! Think how it would look,” he says, taken aback, “I work for Davik, I've got a certain reputation to uphold. I can't let her get away with this. There has to be payback!
“Although I do feel a little guilty about all this. Dia's a good-looking gal – it'd be a shame to kill her.” Yeah, because that’s the only reason. Asshole. “Tell you what – I'll take 200 credits in exchange for lifting the bounty.”
Two hundred credits? Yeah, he is an asshole. But let’s see if I can put on a little charm here, persuade him otherwise. “You know, if you hire someone to kill Dia it will look like you weren't man enough to do it yourself.” This kind of guy, that insult to his pride is enough to get him to do whatever I want.
He seems to mull this over a little. Success. “Well... I guess you might be right. Besides, I've noticed some of the girls around here are giving me the cold shoulder since all this started. Okay, you win; Dia can live.” God, what an asshole. “Don't worry – I'll stick to my end of the bargain. I'll go tell Zax in the bounty office right now that the bounty is off the table.”
As he walks off, I say, “Yeah, you do that.” Wow, the air smells better now that he’s gone - how much goddamn cologne was he wearing?
“That was really good of you,” Carth says, “I mean, you didn’t even know her, and you still did that for her.”
“Hey, us girls gotta stick together,” I say to him, “Besides, he was an asshole. I don’t take well to assholes.” I stretch my neck a little. “Well, I think we’ve spent enough time in here for one lifetime. I think it’s time to check things out with the Hidden Beks.” Enough time has passed that Mission won’t think I was following her if we see her there.
“I’m really glad you said that instead of the Vulkars,” Carth says, shaking his head.
