Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (28 May 1923 – 18 January 1996), popularly known as NTR, was an Indian actor, producer, director, film editor and politician who served as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for seven years over three terms. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of Indian cinema and one of the two legends of Telugu cinema, along with Akkineni Nageswara Rao. NTR received three National Film Awards for co-producing Thodu Dongalu (1954) and Seetharama Kalyanam (1960) under National Art Theater, Madras, and for directing Varakatnam (1970). NTR has received the erstwhile Rashtrapati Awards for his performance(s) in the Raju Peda (1954) and the Lava Kusa (1963). He garnered the Nandi Award for Best Actor for Kodalu Diddina Kapuram in 1970, and the Inaugural Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu in 1972 for Badi Panthulu.

NTR – A Legendary Visionary who made Andhra people Proud Globally – Part –III

Career in Politics:

In the year 1980’s N.T.Rama Rao decided to retired from film Industry to take up politics actively for serving society. He set up the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) with eminent team of kamma visionaries in the year 1982, following which NTR was elected the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh three times between the years 1983 to 1994. In between, NTR became the leader of the Telugu Dasam Legislature Party in 1983.

NTR strongly believed that politicians should develop direct contacts with the common man and therefore, he made extensive journeys across the state of A.P to promote his TDP. The journey was made on a personal van named ‘Chaitanya Ratham’. NTR advocated for the cause of the underprivileged in the society and to provide them with the basic necessities. The bill which he proposed allowing women to inherit ancestral property was enacted in the year 1986. NTR was such a popular politician that his TDP posed a threat to the existence of the Congress party in India. It was during the era of NTR that the Telugu Desam Party established itself as one of the strongest and most organized political parties in the country.

The party was systematic in its operations and all the work was computerized even during that age, factors responsible for the TDP’s existence even after the death of founder. NTR was unanimously elected the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in 1994 in spite of the fact that he could not contest the elections owing to bad health. NTR had suffered a stroke in 1989 after which his health deteriorated considerably, after death of NTR Mr. N.Chandra Babu Naidu(current CM of A.P) taken the charge of TDP and played a very significant role in carrying out the legacy of NTR as son-in-law and successor of TD Party he is still maintaining that charm and visionary leadership which was acquired from one of the worlds eminent Leader NTR.

In his Life’s journey as actor, NTR won ten Film fare Awards in the Best Actor category in Telugu cinema, from the year 1954 until 1958 and then in 1961, 1962, 1966, 1968 and 1972. In 1968, his film, ‘Varakatnam’ was conferred with a National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. Additionally, NTR was also awarded the ‘Padma Shri’ by the Government of India in 1968 to commemorate his contribution to the world of Telugu cinema. The Andhra University felicitated the actor with an Honorary Doctorate in 1978.

NTR died on January 18, 1996 at 72 years of age. He was a residing in Hyderabad at the time of his death. He is still missed not only in Tollywood, but also in Andhra Pradesh politics.
