Johannes Vermeer’s ‘Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window’
Experts are currently uncovering an image of a large cupid that was hanging on the wall behind her.
More than two and a half centuries later, laboratory tests have determined beyond a doubt that the symbol of love was covered up decades after the Dutch artist’s death in 1675. Previously it was thought that Vermeer had covered up cupid himself.
The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden in Germany has decided to remove the overpainting from the Dutch Old Master’s work, which normally hangs in the institution’s Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. The museum plans to restore the work according to Vermeer’s original intention, which conveys that the young woman is reading a love letter.
The existence of the cupid has long been known by researchers. In 1979, an x-ray first revealed the image of the naked god of love, either in a frame or as a framed fresco within the painting. At the time, it was thought that Vermeer had overpainted the figure himself, preferring instead the resulting empty wall.
In 2017, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden’s painting conservator Christoph Schölzel began working on the famous canvas. X-ray, infrared reflectography imaging, and microscopic analyses were then re-evaluated in Dresden.
Vermeer painted relatively few paintings in his lifetime and died in debt. His oeuvre of around 40 works, includes Girl With a Pearl Earring, Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window, and Woman Holding a Balance, which are among the most well-known paintings in the world.

According to Rembrandt able Ernst van de Wetering, best artists adopted absolute models for their ‘Tronies’, so it is apparently safe to achieve that whoever she was, she was not a bubble of Vermeer’s imagination.

This “new” Vermeer is blowing my mind a bit:
the first image of the completed restoration of Johannes Vermeer’s  Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window (around 1657-59) has been released today by Dresden’s Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, fully revealing a hidden image of Cupid. The change to the composition in one of Vermeer’s most famous paintings is so great that the German museum is dubbing it a “new” Vermeer in publicity materials.
The painting has been in the museum’s collection for more than 250 years and the hidden Cupid had been known about since an x-ray in 1979 and infrared reflectography in 2009. It had been assumed that the artist himself had altered the composition by covering over the painting of Cupid.
Blake Gopnik writes more about it here and here.

THE ‘NEW’ DRESDEN VERMEER COMES WITH VIEWING INSTRUCTIONS
THE DAILY PIC — back from vacation at last! — is the newly unveiled “original” version of Vermeer’s painting of a girl reading a letter, as it now appears after conservators at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden removed overpaint that had turned its framed painting of Cupid into a blank stretch of wall. (See below for the image as it used to look; thanks to The Art Newspaper for both images, and for news of the unveiling.) The yellow lines on my Pic are, of course, an “overpainting” of my own, demonstrating that the bottom edge of the Cupid intersects with the curtain precisely at the painting’s vanishing point. I’ve argued in print (drive.google.com/file/d/1kts_OdmbBIzJjxrbh2cAC7TfIugfHSUG/view) that Dutch viewers knew that perspectival paintings had a special power when viewed from the “center of projection” — a single viewing spot, often close-up and off to one side, from which effects of depth and space are vastly more impressive and effective. At a long-ago psych. conference at Berkeley, I also argued that the trompe-l’oeil curtains in so many Dutch paintings are an invitation to the viewer to come within arm’s reach of the image, to the spot where the fictive curtain might be drawn and which, as it happens, is also very often the “correct” perspectival viewing point. The original version of Vermeer’s painting gave its (male?) Dutch viewers all the clues and cues they needed to understand how to look at his picture, from where. Once they got to the right spot they knew — they could see and feel — that they were up close to Vermeer's table and looming above its fruit bowl; that they were standing on the same floor as the yellow-clad lady and were almost in her face, in every sense of the word. Like her, they were at Cupid’s feet, and at his mercy.
(Now I need an optics expert to weigh in on whether the amazing reflection of the girl in the window also implies a viewer at a close viewing point.)

Take a close look at the Cupid painting-within-a-painting in Vermeer's "Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window" (ca. 1657-59). At some point in the 18th Century, someone covered the Cupid with varnish, and it remained covered for over 200 years. A painstaking restoration completed last year revealed the original image!

Vermeer Painting Restoration Reveals a Portrait of Cupid Hidden for Over 350 Years
Tumblr media
“Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window” by Johannes Vermeer 1657-1659
Tumblr media
The oil painting shows a young woman, finely dressed in yellow and black, reading a letter next to an open window. Originally, the wall behind her was blank, but a 1979 x-ray showed that there was actually something on it. Beneath the plain wall was actually a “painting” of a naked Cupid. As it was not uncommon for artists to paint over their work, scholars initially accepted that Vermeer had simply changed his mind and decided to keep the wall bare. the painting was initially attributed to other artists. But in 1880, French art critic Théophile Thoré-Bürger came upon the painting and correctly attributed it to the Dutch Master

Since 1979, art historians have known that Johannes Vermeer's Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window (circa 1657-1659) featured an overpainted figure of a Cupid in the background. Most assumed Vermeer himself had painted over the figure. Now, thanks to a major restoration by the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden in Germany, the overpainting has been removed to reveal the Cupid.
The use of various X-ray imaging techniques—especially synchrotron radiation—has become a powerful tool for the nondestructive analysis of great works of art. For instance, European scientists in 2008 used synchrotron radiation to reconstruct the hidden portrait of a peasant woman painted by Vincent van Gogh.

DRESDEN, Germany — After nearly three centuries behind a layer of paint, a naked Cupid has surfaced in one of the world’s best-loved artworks, drastically altering the background of a quiet interior scene.
“We found a layer of varnish with dirt on top of it” that must have accumulated later, Koja added. “It was clear the top layer of paint wasn’t by Vermeer. It was a distortion by a foreign hand against the intention of the artist.”
After the expert panel gave the go-ahead, restorers exposed a strip beneath the painted rectangle, about half an inch wide. Not only was the brushwork on the Cupid unmistakably Vermeer’s, it was also still in excellent condition, Koja said.

Girl reading a letter at an open window by Johannes Vermeer 1657–1659
"Johannes Vermeer’s “Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window” has a decidedly protracted provenance. Attributed first to Rembrandt and later to Pieter de Hooch, the canvas was only identified as a Vermeer original in 1862. During World War II, the contemplative scene narrowly escaped destruction in the firebombing of Dresden, but then fell into the hands of the invading Soviets, who refused to return the plundered painting until 1955.
Now, ongoing restoration work has added yet another wrinkle to the story of the 1657 masterpiece: As Germany’s Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden announced earlier this week, a recent bout of laboratory testing confirmed that a long-hidden Cupid found in the top right-hand corner of the canvas was painted over not by the Dutch Golden Age artist, but an unknown party who acted decades after Vermeer’s death. Although art historians have known of the little God of love’s existence since 1979, they previously believed Vermeer covered up the figure himself and, as a result, decided against restoring the painting to its original form.
According to a press release, conservators opted to remove the overpainting in lieu of their discovery, but rather than waiting until the process is complete to return the work to its place in the museum’s Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, they have decided to pause halfway through so that Cupid—or more specifically his head and upper body—can finally make his public debut. Between May 8 and June 16, visitors will be able to view the painting, complete with a semi-unveiled Cupid painstakingly exposed by scalpel scraping, before it returns to the studio for the final stages of restoration.
As artnet News’ Kate Brown reports, conservator Christoph Schölzel began working on the painting in 2017, using X-ray, infrared reflectography imaging and microscopic analyses to examine its underlying layers. These tests, conducted in conjunction with research on the canvas’ restoration history, offered decisive proof that Vermeer was not the one responsible for replacing Cupid with a blank wall."

In Other News, Catherine Hickley reports for The New York Times:
Vermeer is revisited in Dresden, and his painting Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window will be seen as it was meant to be seen -- with a painting on the wall behind the eponymous girl:
Tumblr media
Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden via The New York Times.
The existence of a painting within the painting has been acknowledged as original to Vermeer’s hand since an X-ray of the work was done in the 1980s, but a 2017 decision to proceed with a restoration led to the discovery that Vermeer wasn’t responsible for painting it out with blank plaster.
The paint that effected the blank plaster wall was different from the paint used by Vermeer, and the colors had been mixed and applied to match Vermeer’s wall after the original had already darkened with age.
Tumblr media
Vermeer edited: the painting as it’s been seen for 300 years.
Beneficially, the later over-painting protected Vermeer’s original application, and the exposed cupid image was determined to have been done by the Old Master.  Art historians note that Vermeer commonly used images within images to lend weight and balance to his compositions, and to comment on the foreground business; in this case, Cupid is depicted “trampling on a mask, a symbol of deception, to show that love conquers deceit and dishonesty.”  Cupid also appeared in other paintings, in addition to maps and other imagery that could lend clues to the thoughts of the characters depicted.

So they’re restoring A Vermeer painting called  “Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window”.  Some prude decided that they knew better and painted over the master’s work and painted over the naked cupid and it stayed that way for 300 years.  Now he’s back, baby.  This girl is clearly reading a love letter--cupid is a god of DESIRE, this woman is horned up and people didn’t like that, but FUCK what people like.
Women get horny.  This is such a weirdly empowering story.
