PYOMETRA (which literally means pus in the uterus) mostly happens 2-8 weeks after the end of the estrus.

Intact female dogs which have not been mated (not necessary in all cases), undergo certain changes after each cycle. The increase in the progesterone levels causes thickening of the uterine wall and gradually leads to endometrial hyperplasia in some dogs. This inturn leads to increased chances of pyometra.

Pyometra cab either be open (where the cervix is open and the pus drains out) or closed (where the cervix is closed and the ous accumulates in the uterus)

Open pyometra may sometimes be treated with IV fluids and antibiotics to stabilize the patient. But OH has to be done to prevent the dog from getting pyometra again.

It has been studied that 1 in 4 intact bitches get pyometra.

During my college days i got a call that someone is trying to kill a snake near our department. I tried to rush just for saving this beauty but it was already dead when I reached the spot. Este é Zazu, um tucano toco (Ramphastos toco) que teve seu bico quebrado e mais uma vez utilizamos a tecnologia de impressão 3D para a confecção de sua prótese! Ele apareceu no quintal de uma casa, machucado, e foi resgatado pela amiga veterinaria @gabyterra , que realizou os primeiros cuidados juntamente com o veterinário @selvonslucena. Após os cuidados iniciais, Zazu foi trazido para que nossa equipe o avaliasse e desse início ao trabalho de elaboração da prótese 3D. O projeto de criação desta prótese contou com o esforço de uma equipe multidisciplinar formada por diversos especialistas em medicina veterinária, odontologia humana (@drboticao )e design gráfico (@cogitas3d ), todos integrantes da equipe Animal Avengers. O procedimento cirúrgico para a fixação da prótese foi realizado em Brasília, pelos médicos veterinários Roberto Fecchio (@dr.fecchio )Rodrigo Rabello (@rabello77 ), Matheus Rabello (@matheuskrugeer ), Jairo dos Santos (@jairoamsantos ), Andherson Farias (@andrinho ), além da equipe de residentes e alunos da faculdade #upis . Zazu recuperou-se totalmente, podendo alimentar-se sozinho momentos após o término do procedimento cirúrgico! A cirurgia de fixação da prótese foi registrada pelo apresentador Richard Rasmunssen (@richardselvagem ) e sua equipe de TV. ANTICOAGULANT RODENTICIDE (AR) POISONING IN DOGS A 8 month old male dachshund was presented with history of anticoagulant rodenticide ingestion 2 days back. On presentation the dog was recumbent, depressed, groaning and vomiting. P/E revealed moderately pale mucous membranes, tachycardia, hypothermia (98.6 F) , dehydration and mild abdominal distension. The ultrasonographic examination of abdomen revealed presence of moderate amount of free fluid mainly in left cranial quadrant of abdomen. The USG guided aspiration revealed frank unclotted blood suggestive of haemabdomen. Other clinical signs may inckude hematuria, melena, hyphema, hemothorax, epistaxis, hemoptysis, etc. Anticoagulant rodenticides inhibit epoxide reductase enzyme. This eventually leads to deficiency of factors I, II, VII, IX AND X. DIAGNOSIS- history, prolonged PT, APTT or thrombin time with normal platelets, fibrinogen and FDPs. DIFFERENTIALS include DIC, vWd, platelet deficiency and congenital factor deficiency. TREATMENT- Always give vit k1 with fatty foods. Fresh frozen plasma @ 9ml/ kg iv or blood @ 20ml/kg iv
