Jason finished up his phone call with his sister, who smirked and gloated through the entire conversation, before stepping back into the house in search of Percy.
"Jackson?”
“Yo dude, out back just keep walking straight past the kitchen and the lounge.” A rolling voice responded.
He picked his way between furniture and over toys, assumingly Estelle’s, until he reached the glass sliding door that led out to a sprawling, grassy backyard and a pool the size of actual Texas.
“Are you an Olympic swimmer?” He gaped, stepping onto the patio.
“Uh no not Olympic,” Percy giggled nervously, “Remember how I told you I love the ocean? Yea well I love almost all forms of water. I’m on the college swim team.”
“Well that makes sense. A skater boy, a surfer boy, and a swimmer. Any other activities you delight in?”
“None I can say in the vicinity of my parents,” A lazy smirk spread across his face.
Jason blushed, “And I’m the despicable one?”
Percy laughed, grabbing his hand. They fell into the couch together; shoulders pressed against each other, a head of black hair resting on a broad shoulder, a calloused thumb brushing over golden skin.
“Jase?”
“Mhmm,”
“Tell me your story,”
For a while he didn’t say anything, just sat there staring at the dying day.
Then with a deep breath he began.
“It was me, Thalia and mom till I was around two. Mom was really sad all the time and then one day Thalia and I were taken away and I was sent to this orphanage called Lupa’s Den and my sister couldn’t come with me. I don’t really remember the early years, there was just a few other kids and this really scary lady who looked after us. But when I was around eight Thalia pitched up out of nowhere, caused a scene because they wouldn’t let her take me and then we were in a car and driving here. We’ve been here ever since. She works to support me, and I try to make her life as easy as possible.”
Percy didn’t say anything, but Jason could feel the sorrow and empathy radiating from him. He squeezed their hands and tilted the head on his shoulders, so he was staring into those sea-green eyes.
“It’s not all sad. I made some incredible friends and I got to meet you.”
“I don’t know if it’s too early to say this, and I don’t particularly care, but I think this may be one of the best things to ever happen to me.” Percy waved his hand between them.
“I think so too,” Jason whispered softly.
And in a single blink they closed the space between them. It was a kiss that promised hope, and bloomed love. It was a kiss that discovered kindness and introduced wonder. It was a kiss that found home.
They broke apart slowly, holding each other, and stayed that way for long moments.
“Percy?” A little voice said from the doorway.
They turned around to see a little girl with wonky pigtails and a shy smile standing behind them.
“Hi Seashell, this is my friend Jason.”
“Hello Jason,” Her voice was sweet and soft.
“You must be Estelle,” He smiled, moving to kneel in front of her.
“Yes. I like your shirt,”
“Thank you, and I like yours.” He pointed at the seahorses pulling a clamshell.
“Mom bought it for me because she says princesses ride in clams, and I am a princess.”
“That you are.” He nodded.
She beamed at him, “Percy, I like Jason.”
“Me too Seashell.” His eyes twinkled.
“Mom says supper is ready.”
“Alright then, lead the way.”
They all walked back into the house, which now smelled like melting chocolate and baked bread.
“Mhmmm,” Jason hummed, breathing in the delicious smells.
“Oh gods, it really is going to be my mom’s baking that keeps your around,” Percy winced, elbowing him gently.
“I’m afraid so pretty boy, you’re just not gonna cut it.”
“Oh that hurts, be sure to write ‘died from insults to his looks’ on my grave.”
Jason snorted, “You sir, are a clown.”
“Would you have me any other way?”
“Not even if my life depended on it.”
And they sat down for a feast.
