It’s Day 30 of the #vinylbookchallenge by @deepindigo114_vinyl and @puttherecordon: A Christmas Carol - Holiday Album. Merle Haggard’s Christmas Present (Something Old, Something New) (Capitol, 1979) A friend gave this to me and I thought he was joking, but a couple of the originals are really good, especially If We Make It Through December, and the standards on side two are sung extremely well and mostly tasteful in their arrangements. I learned once again to never doubt The Hag! This challenge was a lot of fun! Heeeere’s Johnny! Today’s #vinylbookchallenge theme is The Shining, an album by someone named John or Jack. And as luck would have it, today my husband gifted me this sublime record by John Coltrane. A Love Supreme was the first jazz album I ever loved, and it’s been a problem for me since I started collecting vinyl: all the good-sounding pressings were out of my price range, be they original or audiophile-grade, and the run of the mill represses sound dreadful. What’s a budget audiophile to do? One of my most recent trips was in 2019 (lol thanks covid) to the National Junior Classical League convention in Fargo North Dakota. It was a wonderful time with Latin teachers and students celebrating #jclove , and on the way in, I visited a wonderful Fargo record store and found this James Chance album (recorded under the pseudonym James White and the Blacks). #vinylbookchallenge Day 8 is Crime and Punishment: A Record You Regret Buying. To be clear, this pick is NOT about musical content—this is an incredible album by an incredible band. Rather, it’s this particular copy. I got this new from Half Price Books at the very beginning of the vinyl resurgence, and I had yet to learn that all pressings are not created equal. This is by a cut rate bootleg presser who did a terrible job: the distortion makes this completely unlistenable. The only reason it’s even still in my house is that I can’t in good conscience give it to anyone else.
