It’s day 19 of the #dgnvinylchallenge by @dadgrind_vinyl: Window Shopping: An album you bought blind. What made you buy it? The Pretty Things - Silk Torpedo (Swan Song, 1974) I was only dimly aware of who The Pretty Things were whenI bought this album and hadn’t heard a note of what lay within. So why did I buy it? Partly because the cover was one of this classics you always saw in the album cover anthologies and partly because it was on Swan Song, the label founded by Led Zeppelin. In the end, the music doesn’t quite live up to either Hipgnosis’s gorgeous cover or Jimmy Page’s imprimatur, but it’s certainly a good album, especially if you want to hear something steeped in 70s sensibilities that isn’t so familiar. As a kid I listened to her and still to this day she’s one of my all-time favorite artists. 1. First album you fell in love with So American Idiot might fit this description better because that’s the first time I obsessed over an album. But this was the first Radiohead album that caught my attention when I was 12 or 13 years old. It was the first album to really grow on me, and now it will always be one of my all-time favorites. The most meaningful albums to me were not the ones I liked right away but the ones I took time to learn and understand. 4. Best Bundle: Hand. Cannot. Erase. By Steven Wilson (special edition box set) This might be cheating a little bit because there is technically no vinyl as a part of this set, but that’s likely just because it would be too bulky. This book is already quite heavy. This is my favorite album of all time. It is a concept album about a woman who disappears without a trace. Not only is the music amazing but the art that comes with it is compelling and well thought-out, down to newspaper clippings, postcards, and letters. There is some secret in the box set that apparently no one has figured out yet.
