Zerwee Pt. 2 by Billy Cobb; a brilliant homage to Pinkerton era @weezer If you check my post a few posts back you’ll see that this album cover is super similar to Weezer’s Pinkerton with the Ukiyo-e style art as well as the lettering. And all the music is reminiscent of the albums sound as well! For everyone who said Pinkerton was the last good Weezer album, this one is worth a listen I’d say! It’s day 12 of the #virgovinylchallenge from @radiohitch and @trumjohanns_plattor: Pay Attention Mr. Bond. John Barry - A View To A Kill (Capitol, 1985) I’m not the biggest Duran Duran fan, but they struck gold when they collaborated with Barry and producer Bernard Edwards on the sleek and sexy theme to Roger Moore’s last outing as 007. In fact, it’s currently at #10 on my Bond Theme Ranking. The movie gets a lot of stick, but how bad could it be with Christopher Walken and Grace Jones as villains?? Very entertaining, indeed. Various - All The Songs From Walt Disney's Dumbo (Music From The Original Motion Picture Sound Track) (Disneyland, 1959/??) When my kids were little, we bought VERY little kids music, preferring to indoctrinate (🤣) them with quality music by everyone from Bing and Belafonte to The Beatles and Bowie. But after we got our hands on a VHS of Dumbo during a Disney embargo on the title (do they still do that??), the soundtrack was so much fun that I thought I would order the CD. Also embargoed! So, I tracked down this vinyl reissue of uncertain date and we had many happy listens. Various Artists - 24 Happening Hits (Telerad, 1967) One of the rare pieces of vinyl my wife brought to our occasion, this is a fairly smoking collection of radio sounds in the pop-psyche-chamber-garage vein, plus a few ringers from earlier years. The key word on the cover is “original,” meaning these aren’t quickie remakes by a faceless studio band. It’s day 28 of the #virgovinylchallenge from @radiohitch and @trumjohanns_mancave: Stay Gold, Ponyboy. Stewart Copeland - Rumble Fish OST (A&M, 1983) I was a huge S.E. Hinton fan as a kid, devouring both The Outsiders and Rumble Fish multiple times. Her stories just ensnared me and she was also an inspiration as a budding writer. So imagine my delight when none other than Francis Ford Coppola made wonderful (if poorly reviewed) films of both novels. Now I had visual inspiration to go along with my literary imagination. I even remember writing about The Outsiders for one of my aesthetics classes in college. And then there was this soundtrack. By 1983 I was completely past any kinds of minor fandom I had for The Police so I was quite surprised when their drummer turned out this beautifully inventive score! This album got a lot of play in those days, as did his follow-up, The Equalizer & Other Cliff Hangers. Also, how cool is that photo from the inner sleeve, with Copeland live-scoring a scene in front of a stack of Marshall’s?? It’s day 27 of the #virgovinylchallenge from @radiohitch and @trumjohanns_mancave: Manic Panic. Jimi Hendrix - Are You Exerienced (Reprise, 1967/74) I was searching for something more obscure (force of habit!) but then I thought: when was the last time I sat down and listened to this album? When I listen to Hendrix these days it’s usually on a bootleg or some deluxe reissue. And GOD does this sound GOOD. Every song is fantastic, including Manic Depression, of course. Nothing special about this pressing, either. According to Discogs it’s a reissue pressed in 1974. I’m fairly certain I bought it new, probably in 1978, when my collection was just getting started. Taylor and his band, who have assembled one of the most impressive discographies of our young century. I still need Country Hai East Cotton, Haw, and Lord I Love The Rain to complete my collection. Perez Pardo and His Orchestra featuring Shorty Rogers - Voodoo Suite plus Six All-Time Greats (RCA, 1955/60?) RCA execs suggested to Prado that he “prepare an orchestral work that would depict the marriage of primitive rhythms to American jazz - a sort of tone poem in which the African, the mambo and the basic aspects of jazz would be united in such a way as to show their true relationship.” 24 hours later, with the help of Shorty, the manuscript was ready and being recorded by 22 musicians, “including practically every available drummer in the area.” End result? It’s day 23 of the #virgovinylchallenge from @radiohitch and @trumjohanns_plattor: Power Play. Iggy And The Stooges - Raw Power (Columbia Canada, 1973) Going for the obvious choice - and straight for the jugular - with this classic collection. The only album released as “Iggy And The Stooges” has quite a different sound than the first two Stooges albums. This is mostly due to the addition of James Williamson to the group, who had a very unique way of layering acoustic and electric rhythm guitars with stinging lead guitar. Some complain about the mix, by Iggy and Bowie, but I never had a problem with it. Perhaps it’s the way the bass and drums are reduced to a dull throb…LOVE THAT. I also like this Canadian pressing with the teeny type on the cover! P.S. World Spirituality Classics Vol. 1: The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda (Luaka Bop, 2017) Even after listening to Journey In Satchidananda about a thousand times (and a few of her other albums, this came as an almost total surprise when I got a sneak peak of it at a label fair. I preordered it without hesitation on the spot and I’m glad I did! It’s a remarkable record, sounding like nothing else with its swooping synthesizers, raw chants, and hypnotic percussion. It’s day 21 of the #virgovinylchallenge from @radiohitch and @trumjohanns_plattor: Sunshine Day. Eddy Grant - Walking On Sunshine (ICE/Epic, 1978) Wow, It’s been ages since I listened to this! Some great grooves, too, with that very distinctive sound combining reggae, synth pop, funk, calypso. Some songs could be more tightly edited - and side two overall is a pit patchy - but it can be hypnotic and uplifting. Grant is such a curious case - he has a near-genius knack for songwriting and production, often recording entirely on his own, but he also shoots himself in the foot by letting his music go out of print and keeping it off Spotify and other services. It’s day X of the #virgovinylchallenge from @radiohitch and @trumjohanns_plattor: No Trespassing. Madonna - s/t (Sire, 1983) Surprise! I have a Madonna album. I didn’t buy it, though, as that was a BORDERLINE I was not willing to cross… The first three songs are pop gold, and you can still hear Ms. Ciccone as the brave striver who came to NYC with a dollar and a dream. Holiday and Everybody are good as well, but the rest doesn’t hold up so well. As for the remainder of her career, despite a few songs here and there, she never really did it for me.
