Candles are gaining popularity as an unlikely symbol for raising awareness of septicaemia. Septicaemia is a life-threatening blood infection that can cause organ failure, stroke, sepsis, and septic shock if not treated in time.
Often referred to as the silent killer, septicemia comes on suddenly and can quickly become life-threatening if not treated within a few hours. It is difficult to diagnose and, as a result, it is estimated that up to 27% of septicemia cases are fatal.
The candle symbol has been adopted by the Sepsis Trust, a charity which aims to raise awareness of sepsis, and to provide support to families affected by it. The charity chose the candle because it reflects the hope that can be held for those affected by the condition.
The candle symbol was first introduced during the Sepsi-Light project in 2020. This project saw healthcare professionals from the UK and Ireland, as well as bereaved families, lighting candles in memory of their loved ones and to raise awareness of septicemia.
The charity’s use of the candle symbol has resonated with people worldwide and has shone a light on septicaemia. They have encouraged people to take part in Candlelight Vigils, usually held virtually nowadays. These vigils provide an opportunity for those affected by the condition to come together in solidarity and support one another.
The Sepsis Trust continues to promote the use of the candle symbol, in order to raise awareness of the condition and to provide support for those affected by it.

So, Stephen Crichtow, the voice actor (and regular actor) who played Count Edmont de Fortemps, a really relatively minor NPC in Final Fantasy XIV, just died
and on - basically every server, with limited if any planning or organization as far as I can tell, there’s a candlelight vigil going on outside Fortemps Manor
I’m at one now: people are - well, people have their characters standing around, someone is giving out the minion that is a little campfire to serve as candles, I can see that I’m not the only one with the “House Fortemps Knight” title equipped
and I’m. moved. because as awful and annoying as people can be, in this game and in general, we’re also capable of doing things like this together as a community
and yeah, we’re not physically anywhere, we just made our catboys and bunnygirls stand in a virtual place, but - you could say that for the memorials, and weddings, and baby-namings, and religious services, we’ve all attended virtually over the past year and a half. there’s still meaning in the intentionality, in making our characters stand here instead of doing anything that might be called “playing the game” with them.

We’re holding a virtual candlelight vigil on malaysian twitter and hope that some of u will join us in solidarity with the asylum seekers who are driven to our shores and subjected to the whims of a merciless and capricious government. U dont have to do anything too out there, just post these images on twitter and with the hashtag #MigranJugaManusia (which is malay for migrants are human beings too)

HONG KONG (AP) — Thousands of people in Hong Kong defied a police ban Thursday evening, breaking through barricades to mark the 31st anniversary of the crushing of a democracy movement centered on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.
With democracy all but snuffed out in mainland China, the focus has shifted increasingly to semi-autonomous Hong Kong, where authorities for the first time banned an annual candlelight vigil marking the anniversary of the 1989 crackdown.
Police had cited the need for social distancing during the coronavirus outbreak in barricading sprawling Victoria Park to try to prevent people from gathering there. Beijing is taking a tougher stance following months of anti-government protests last year, in what activists see as an accelerating erosion of the city’s rights and liberties.
Despite the police ban on the vigil, crowds lit candles and observed a minute of silence at 8:09 p.m. (1209 GMT, 8:09 a.m. EDT). While police played recordings warning people not to participate in the unauthorized gathering, they did little to stop people from entering the park.
“We all know the Hong Kong government and the Chinese government really don’t want to see the candle lights in Victoria Park,” said Wu’er Kaixi, a former student leader who was No. 2 on the government’s most-wanted list following the Tiananmen Square crackdown.
Hundreds and possibly thousands of people were killed when tanks and troops moved in on the night of June 3-4, 1989, to break up weeks of student-led protests that had spread to other cities and were seen as a threat to Communist Party rule.
“The Chinese Communists want us all to forget about what happened 31 years ago,” Wu’er told the AP in Taiwan, where he lives. “But it is the Chinese government themselves reminding the whole world that they are the same government … doing the same in Hong Kong.”
China did not intervene directly in last year’s protests, despite speculation it might deploy troops, but backed the tough response of the Hong Kong police and government. It then announced last month at the annual meeting of its ceremonial legislature that it would impose national security laws on Hong Kong, circumventing the city’s legislature and shocking many of its 7.5 million residents.
Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, where thousands of students had gathered in 1989, was quiet and largely empty on Thursday. Police and armored vehicles stood guard on the vast space. Few pedestrians lined up at security checkpoints where they must show IDs to be allowed through as part of mass surveillance nationwide to prevent any commemoration of the event.
As has become customary, many dissidents were placed under house arrest and their communications with the outside world cut off, according to rights groups.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson offered the government’s standard defense of the 1989 crackdown.
“The Chinese government has made a clear conclusion about the political disturbance that occurred in the late 1980s,” Zhao Lijian said. “The great achievements that we have achieved … have fully demonstrated that the development path China has chosen is completely correct, which conforms to China’s national conditions and has won the sincere support of the Chinese people.”
Despite the ban on the candlelight vigil, Hong Kong is bracing for possible “pop-up” protests of the type that raged around the city last year and often led to violent confrontations between police and demonstrators.
Thousands have been arrested in the demonstrations, which were sparked by proposed legislation that could have allowed suspects to be sent to mainland China for trial.
The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic and Democratic Movements of China that organizes the annual vigil called on people to light candles at 8 p.m. (1200 GMT) and planned to livestream the commemorations on its website.
Alliance Chairman Lee Cheuk-yan and several other members of the Hong Kong Alliance gathered at Victoria Park at 6:30 p.m. (1030 GMT, 6:30 a.m. EDT), dressed in black shirts with the Chinese characters for “truth” emblazoned on the front. They lit candles and urged the public to do the same later on to mourn victims of the massacre and show their support for the democratic cause in China.
Lee then led the group of about 15 members in a candlelit procession around the park, shouting slogans including, “Stand with Hong Kong.”
“We have been doing this for 30 years, we have the right to do this, this is a peaceful procession,” he said, stating that it would be “absurd” if this behavior is criminalized.
The group later removed one of the barricades surrounding the park, and entered it to continue their procession.
On Thursday, the Hong Kong legislature passed a law making it a crime to disrespect China’s national anthem. The pro-democracy opposition, which sees the law as an infringement of freedom of expression, boycotted the vote.
“The Hong Kong government tried to please or show loyalty to Beijing and ban our gathering even before the national security law comes in. But we are determined,” Lee said at a kiosk set up by the group to distribute flyers in the busy Causeway Bay shopping district near the park.
“The ban comes amid an alarming acceleration of attacks on the autonomy of Hong Kong and the undermining of the rights and freedoms of the Hong Kong people guaranteed under Hong Kong and international law,” Sharon Hom, executive director of Human Rights in China, said in a statement.
Other vigils, virtual and otherwise, were planned elsewhere, including in Taiwan, the self-ruled island democracy whose government called again this year for Beijing to own up to the facts of the crackdown.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted criticism of China and Hong Kong for banning the vigil earlier this week before meeting with a group of Tiananmen Square survivors at the State Department.
Zhao, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said, “We urge the U.S. to abandon ideological prejudice, correct mistakes and stop interfering in China’s internal affairs in any form.”
China has released the last of those arrested for directly taking part in the Tiananmen demonstrations, but others who seek to commemorate them have been rearrested for continuing their activism.
They include Huang Qi, founder of the website 64 Tianwang that sought to expose official wrongdoing. Reportedly in failing health, he is serving a 12-year sentence after being convicted of leaking state secrets abroad.

Chicago candlelight vigil for the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting victims by Strannik45 Via Flickr: (More photos here)
I got an e-mail about the vigil within hours of the shooting. It was organized by several Chicago synagogues and Jewish organizations, as well as a virtual smorgasbord of Chicago religious and/or community organizations and activists.
(On the interesting side note, I saw U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi walking around and shaking people's hands, but he wasn't one of the speakers).
I had some work stuff to take care of, but I made an effort to re-arrange my schedule and make it. As I've written elsewhere, I rarely get an excuse to bust out my "marching for those who can't" T-shirt, and... My mom wasn't in town, my sister lives in another state, and my brother is busy working, I like to think of this is going on their behalf, And on behalf of all of my Jewish relates who aren't with us anymore.
The vigil took place on Sunday, October 28 at 5:30 PM., on downtown Chicago's Federal Plaza. The location wasn't a coincidence, because, honestly, this felt less like a vigil and more of a call to action to left-leaning voters. It is kind of hard to talk about the attack without mentioning the Trump Administration, but I feel like a vigil should have mentioned the victims a bit more. And I was dubious about some of the speakers using the vigil to talk about crime in Chicago. I mean, talk about things like racism and gun control were perfectly fair game, but this seemed like a stretch.
The vigil ended with recitation of the mourning kaddish and the singing of "We Shall Overcome." While the program sheets that got passed around had the lyrics for the entire song, people only wound up singing the chorus
The vigil was scheduled to run until 7;00 PM., but, for all practical purposes, the event ended at 6:30 PM. Though, for about 15 minutes, a group of Jewish women gathered around in a circle and sang some mournful and hopeful English-language and Hebrew-language (and I think there might have been some Yuiddish) Jewish songs. Which was nice.

Halifax Pride delays annual festival to August
Organizers of the Halifax Pride Festival announced Wednesday its annual celebration will be delayed until August this year.
In a news release, festival organizers say the 11-day event will be rescheduled to August 12-22 "due to the changing nature of the pandemic and public health protocols in recent weeks."
The festival plans to return to its usual mid-July schedule in 2022.
"The Halifax Pride Festival has a significant positive impact on the social and cultural well-being of our 2SLGBTQ+ community," Executive Director Adam Reid said in a news release.
"Our team of staff and volunteers have prioritized developing plans that allow for a safe and successful festival through in-person events at our Garrison Grounds Festival Site and online platforms. By delaying until August, the health and safety of all festival participants will be further supported as they gather to celebrate our community’s culture, history, and advocacy. ”
By moving the festival to August, organizers say it hopes in-person events and elements can continue as planned.
However, the Pride Parade will not be held in 2021 due to its large attendance numbers.
In previous years, the parade has drawn thousands of people to downtown Halifax.
The full schedule of festival events and activities will be released in early July.
It marks the second time during the pandemic that Halifax Pride has had to adapt its programming.
Last year, much of the festival shifted online as a result of the COVID-19. Educational workshops, lectures, art shows, and film screenings were held virtually. It hosted in-person gatherings as well, including a march and candlelight vigil.
