Painter, graphic artist - illustrator. Genrist, historical and church painter, portraitist, landscape painter. Teacher.

He was born in the family of a peasant who performed church ornaments in Moscow.

In the early 1870s, he studied at the Stroganov Art and Industrial School

In 1875 - 1881 he studied at MUZHVZ with Vasily Perov, Vladimir Makovsky, Evgraf Sorokin. In 1881, for the painting "The Boyar's Exit from the Church" he was awarded the title of class artist of the 3rd degree.

He lived mainly in Moscow. In the 1890s - 1900s he collaborated with popular literary and art magazines "Niva", "Pictictive Review", "World Illustration". He took part in the illustration of the publication "Tsar's and Imperial Hunt in Russia. The end of the 17th and 18th centuries." (In 4 volumes. St. Petersburg, 1896 - 1911). At the request of Ivan Sytin, he created more than 100 sheets of illustrations for the Old and New Testaments for the publication of lithograph albums.

From 1881 to 1887, together with Alexei Korzukhin, he performed wall paintings and images for three iconostasis in the Ascension Cathedral of the city of Yelets. In the mid-1880s - 1892, together with academician Vladimir Makovsky, he performed wall paintings and paintings of the iconostasis of the Spaso - Preobrazhensky Cathedral in Sumy.

From 1890 to 1894 he taught drawing and painting at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. From 1894 to 1898 - professor in the nature class of the Higher Art School at the IAX. In 1897, for the painting "Death of Tsar Fyodor Alekseevich" he was awarded the title of academician of historical painting.

Since 1884 - exhibitor, since 1891 - member of the Association of Mobile Art Exhibitions. Member of the Moscow Society of Art Lovers. Since 1906 - a full member of the Imperial Academy of Arts.

Klavdy Lebedev's paintings are presented in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum and other major museum collections of Russia and the states of the former USSR.
