30 days Manga Challenge

Sorry for the lack of posts lately, I have lots of stuff in my drafts that are yet to be published ! I’ll also be doing this manga challenge for the next 30 days.

Day 1 Your very first manga :

Mirumo de pon ! , which I still love and cherish today. It’s cute and funny, with likeable characters and it was the perfect first manga for 7~8 years old me. 

At the time I was an avid reader of franco-belgian Bande-dessinée, but I never thought I would read and enjoy manga. It was my sister who first picked a volume of Mirumo at our local library, and I remember how it shocked me that she borrowed a manga. In fact, I even told her that mangas were all bad and that we shouldn’t read any ! 

To give some context, in the 90′s and 2000′s, manga didn’t have a very good reputation in France. They were often presented by French medias as very stupid and violent, and they were often considered a bad influence for the youth. 

Yet despite my misconceptions about the medium, I gave Mirumo a try and it quickly won over me haha

I can recall the chair I was sitting on, and exactly were in my room I was on the day I read it (a sunny saturday afternoon). Older readers and people used to manga might not understand why a simple romance shoujo like Mirumo shook me so much at the time, but it was just so different from the BDs I used to read, that it transformed my vision of what a comic could be like. 

The art, pacing and narration style were unlike anything I knew and the fact that Shoujo manga was a whole category of comics catered to young girls like me was new, as BDs were more often catered to boys or to an unisex audience.

My reading habits have changed a lot since then, but I still dig the cuteness of Hiromu Shinozuka’s art and her loveable characters.

Best of the Best: Severely Underappreciated Modern Magical Girl Anime and Manga/Asian Animation!

As a massive magical girl nerd who has high standards in media, I like to see shows where magical girls kick ass and learn something meaningful along the way. However, certain shows can be drowned out by other more far popular media on nowadays, a common sight to see when these projects explore the genre in very interesting directions and actually flesh out their cast while the top rated stuff remain stagnant in story without much real character development. That's why I want to shine a spotlight on the many forgotten and obscure titles that have popped up over the years (The ones I will be listing here are from the 2000s to present day). As per my standards, this list will not feature any works that have any of the following elements: Heavy amounts of gore and violence, age gap romances (implied and overt), incest, mass kill offs of both main and side cast members, unnecessary sexualization of minors and the plot taking a turn that wrecks both the characters and narrative in the end.
