Academic

WaldemarSwierzy was born in Katowice, Poland in 1931. Having studied at Cracow Academy of Fine Arts, in the Department of Graphic Arts in Katowice, he graduated in 1952. Later, he taught at what became Poznan Academy of Fine Arts and lectured at Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts.

 Artwork

Swierzy worked in the commercial art sector, involving himself in design for exhibitions, books, illustrations and, of course, poster art, for which he is now famous. For a while he was President of International Poster Biennale in Warsaw and he also became a member of Alliance Graphique International. Although he grew up in Poland, his biggest influences were from the USA, notably films, jazz musicians, gamblers and gangsters. Exhibitions of his artwork appeared all over the world, including Russia, Brazil and the USA. He has received numerous awards and produced well over a thousand posters. His artwork for sale includes paintings of Marilyn Monroe and the Blues Brothers.

Jazz

Affordable artwork is now available for all art lovers, as not everyone can afford the originals. Swierzy has become associated with posters and prints of great jazz musicians. From 1983 to 1987 he was involved with the Jacksonville Jazz Series, creating five posters. His jazz artwork also includes John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and King Oliver.

Swierzy's art has always been enjoyable for the viewer and in later years became more expressionist with vivid colours and bold brush strokes. His art is innovative, spontaneous and exciting and often displays humour, even when dealing with darker issues like the criminal underworld.
