How does a home water softener work?
A home water softener works by eliminating ions like calcium and magnesium from hard water using a process known as ion exchange. Inside the water softener, resin particles are coated with sodium ions. As hard water travels through the softener, calcium and magnesium ions are attracted to the resin beads and replace sodium ions. This softens the water and removes the hardness-causing minerals.
When the resin beads get saturated with calcium and magnesium ions, the water softener undergoes regeneration. During regeneration, a brine solution, typically composed of water and salt, is flushed through the resin tank. The sodium ions in the brine solution replace the calcium and magnesium ions on the resin beads, and any excess minerals are washed away, leaving the resin beads ready to soften water again.
In principle, a home water softener works by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions in hard water for sodium ions, effectively softening the water and reducing scale accumulation in pipes and appliances.
