Salve o gato !

Do you have any top 5 facts you would like to share regarding shipwrecks I’m very curious /Nf /gen
-♟️
I DO HAVE!!!! Ok ok let me think of some good ones
1 - Talking about the most famous one first, a lot of people think that the Titanic wasn't as secure as the fame she had at the time, and this, in my opinion, has to do with the movie (which is a whole other problem that i should talk about later) but in reality, it WAS one of the safest ships at the time.
Yes, to today's standards, it would be considered way too unsafe to transport people, as it had lifeboats for only half the people at the time of the tragedy, however, at the time, it actually had MORE lifeboats than required by the law - if you go see the merchant shipping act of 1894 (which was used at the time of the tragedy) ships at the size of the Titanic had to carry 16 lifeboats, while the Titanic had 20. And yes, although it was not a lot more, it was definitely better than having the minimun.
Alongside with that, they only carried enough boats for half the passengers as they believed they could call other ships for help in the case of a shipwreck happening, but everything going on together for the worst made it impossible for it to happen.
2 - A lot of people think that "Women and children first" is a law/code of conduct that people follow heavily in the case of tragedies, but it is actually the complete opposite
Although data may not be 100% certain, a study done in 2012 using 18 shipwrecks as database showed that on average, 20% of female passengers survived on average, while 10% of the children survived, while the ones who survived the most were crew members and the captain.
The reason for this myth existing on popular mind is because of the Titanic as well - as it is an exception to this rule. The crew, in the Titanic's case, made sure to actually call the WCF order and put it in practice, making it so a lot more women and children survived compared to men. Alongside with that i'll leave this link right here which goes more in depth about it.
3 - The oldest shipwreck that we know about is the Dokos Shipwreck, which was found in the southern part of Greece, more precisely, near the Dokos island - which gave it it's name. The shipwreck is dated back to around 2700-2200 BC, and at the moment of discovery (in 1975) it obviously had no traces of the ship left, but, with the vases and pottery pieces left around the area, they could determine it was a merchant vessel.
4 - There was a woman named Violet Constance Jessop who got the nickname "Miss Unsinkable" during her lifetime. She was a nurse who worked on the three "big sisters" at the time of their shipwrecks (RMS Olympic, RMS Titanic and HMHS Brittanic) and she managed to somehow survive all of them and live to old age. Also, as a funfact: she didn't stop working in ships even after these 3 shipwrecks....Which honestly i wish i was as courageous as she was tbh.
5 - There is a cruiseferry called MS Estonia who sank in 1994, taking the life of +800 people and being considered one of the worst shipwrecks in history during peaceful times. Alongside with that, the site of it is considered a graveyard by the government, and it is completely illegal to dive there or try anything to take the ship out of the ocean or to recover the bodies from it - the area was also covered in gravel to prevent grave plundering.
If any of these interested you, i urge you to go search a bit more about them!!! I absolutely adore searching about it as it has been a hyperfixiation for a long time! Also if you want to ask anything else feel free to do so!/gen

he .25-20 cartridge: A Classic in Firearms History

Introduction to the .25-20 cartridge
The .25-20 cartridge (also known as the .25-20 WCF) holds a significant place in firearms history, boasting a rich legacy that spans several decades. This small-caliber cartridge was invented in the late 19th century and gained popularity for its versatility and performance. Let's delve into the intriguing details surrounding its creation, usage, predecessors, successors, and performance.
The .25-20 cartridge was introduced in 1893 by Winchester Repeating Arms Company, a renowned firearms manufacturer in the United States. It was derived from the .32-20 Winchester by necking it down to .25 caliber. The Winchester Model 1892 was the first rifle chambered for it. Its development was primarily driven by the demand for a cartridge suitable for small game hunting and varmint control. This particular caliber designation represents the bullet diameter (0.25 inches) and the powder charge weight (20 grains) used in the cartridge.
Initially, the .25-20 cartridge was chambered in Winchester's lever-action rifles, specifically the Model 1892. This rifle gained popularity among hunters, as they provided quick follow-up shots and were particularly well-suited for shooting small game, such as rabbits, squirrels, and varmints. Lever-action rifles offered a rapid rate of fire, making them ideal for hunting in dense forests or fields.
Other manufacturers also chambered rifles for the .25-20, including Marlin's Model 1894 and Savage's Model 23 bolt-action rifle.
Predecessors and Successors
The .25-20 cartridge was preceded by the .32-20 Winchester cartridges, which was introduced in 1892. The .32-20 shared the same bullet diameter as the .25-20 but featured a larger powder charge. The .25-20 was necked down to accept a .257 bullet. The .25-20 cartridge sought to strike a balance between power and efficiency.
As for successors, the .25-20 cartridge itself did not spawn any direct offspring. However, its popularity waned over time with the advent of more potent and versatile cartridges, eventually leading to its decline in mainstream use. The .25-20 gradually died out in favor of improved cartridges, such as the .22 Hornet and .218 Bee, which offered better long-range performance and higher velocities. Also, the rise of bolt-action rifles made older lever-action calibers less appealing to hunters.
Performance
In terms of performance, the .25-20 cartridge achieved moderate velocities and delivered sufficient energy for its intended purpose. It typically fired a 60 to 86-grain bullet, with blackpowder muzzle velocities ranging from 1,200 to 1,500 feet per second. With modern smokeless powder loads, velocities may range from 1,200-2,100 feet per second. This performance was adequate for hunting small game and varmints at close to moderate ranges. However, the .25-20 lacked the power and range necessary for larger game or long-distance shooting.
Conclusion
While the .25-20 cartridge may not be as prominent today as it once was, its historical significance and contribution to firearms development remain undeniable. It played a crucial role in the evolution of lever-action rifles and provided hunters with a reliable option for small game hunting and pest control. Its successors may have overtaken it in terms of performance, but the .25-20 cartridge will forever hold a place in the annals of firearms history as a testament to innovation and adaptability.

Better Cocoa for the Planet: How ECOM is Reducing Deforestation in Their Supply Chain

Cocoa production has long been linked to deforestation and biodiversity loss, posing significant challenges to environmental sustainability. As one of the world’s largest cocoa traders and processors, ECOM recognizes the importance of addressing these issues. The company sources cocoa from over 30 countries and has made it a priority to reduce the environmental impact of its operations, including minimizing cocoa-linked deforestation.
Standardized Methodology for Sustainable Sourcing To mitigate deforestation, ECOM is applying a standardized methodology developed by World Resources Institute (WRI), ensuring that cocoa beans sourced by the company are not linked to forest loss. Acknowledging that tackling deforestation requires collective action, ECOM joined the Cocoa & Forests Initiative (CFI), established in 2017 by the World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) and the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH). The initiative’s aim is to eliminate cocoa-driven deforestation and promote the restoration of forested areas.
In support of this goal, WRI partnered with WCF and 19 other major cocoa and chocolate companies to create tools such as the West Africa Cocoa dataset and Cocoa Deforestation Risk Assessment (DRA). ECOM has adapted these resources to strengthen its cocoa supply chain sustainability in various regions.
Identifying and Addressing Deforestation Risk Before the release of the Cocoa DRA, ECOM relied on national-level risk assessments and global datasets, which were not as tailored to cocoa-specific deforestation issues. The introduction of the Cocoa DRA allowed ECOM to conduct risk assessments in a more standardized manner, expanding its reach to cocoa-growing regions such as Cameroon, Colombia, Côte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Ghana, Nigeria, Peru, Mexico, Nicaragua, Sierra Leone, Vietnam, and Uganda.
By combining global data with farm boundary data and ground verification, ECOM is better able to identify high-risk areas where cocoa production could lead to deforestation. Once these areas are identified, ECOM works with smallholder farmers to prevent deforestation through various programs, including Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) initiatives and sensitization training. These programs ensure that farmers stay in the supply chain and contribute to mitigating deforestation rather than exacerbating it.
Promoting Agroforestry and Sustainable Practices One of ECOM’s key initiatives in Ghana has been to encourage agroforestry through a PES program. Since 2021, this program has provided farmers with multi-purpose shade trees, offering financial incentives for maintaining these trees over three years. To ensure the program’s success, ECOM conducted comprehensive land assessments to determine suitable tree species and understand farmers’ needs. The initiative also includes training in good agricultural practices, environmental stewardship, and business management, with a report due in 2025 to assess its biodiversity and ecosystem health impact.
Beyond Regulatory Compliance: Long-Term Solutions While regulations like the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) are important, they mainly address whether deforestation has already occurred. The Cocoa DRA goes beyond compliance, helping ECOM identify future deforestation risks and enabling the company to allocate resources effectively for prevention.
In Côte d'Ivoire, ECOM has used insights from the Cocoa DRA to support farmers in adapting to climate change, building resilience, and improving incomes through climate-smart cocoa practices and agroforestry. ECOM is working with the Green Innovation Centre of GIZ to help farmers transition to agroforestry around the Bossematié Nature Reserve and Beki Classified Forest. They also developed a management plan for the Reserve’s buffer zone and are incentivizing agroforestry through carbon stock-based schemes.
Reducing Firewood Use and Supporting Local Nurseries ECOM’s initiatives also include supporting local briquette production units to reduce reliance on firewood, a practice that contributes to deforestation. Additionally, ECOM is aiding local nurseries in producing plants for both on- and off-farm planting, further advancing agroforestry transitions.
Ongoing Monitoring and Future Plans By using the Cocoa DRA and complementary monitoring tools, ECOM is actively preventing deforestation and enhancing sustainability across its cocoa supply chains. However, more innovation and collaborative approaches are needed. By prioritizing cocoa farmers' needs and ensuring a consistent focus on deforestation-free solutions, companies like ECOM can contribute to a more sustainable cocoa industry.
Conclusion With its commitment to sustainable cocoa sourcing and deforestation prevention, ECOM is taking critical steps toward ensuring that its supply chain has minimal environmental impact. Through continued use of the Cocoa DRA and ongoing support for smallholder farmers, ECOM is helping lead the way toward a deforestation-free cocoa industry.

SATSANG NOTES With Gurudev...
Bangalore Ashram
04.11 2023
Q. You have mentioned earlier that soul is the same size for ant as well as am elephant. What really is the size of soul?
G: Sun is so big, yet it gets reflected fully in a small mirror as well as a big mirror. Size, shape, form don't pertain to the soul.
Q. What do I do if I start enjoying negativity?
G: You must be getting some pleasure out of it, it's a distortion. It's not very healthy for you.
Q. In world cup, India played Pakistan. People say that we should not play when there's so much terrorism from Pakistan. What's your opinion?
G: We should not mix culture, sports, spirituality etc with politics.
Don't brand that all the people of Pakistan are bad.
We had 150 people from Pakistan participate in WCF. They did a very good performance. We should minimise conflict.
This doesn't mean we're keeping quiet or get complacent with terrorism or wrong doings. When there's wrong doing, we should take a strong stand against it.
Q. Can Sanyaas and Sansaar coexist?
G: Sanyaas is being centered and making the whole world as part of you. It's not running away from responsibility.
Q. What's your opinion about gender fluidity debate?
G: Gender is determined by nature, we must honor that. In every individual, there's qualities of both male and female. Some times, mother aspect is stronger, some times father aspect. You should move to spirituality and develop a higher identity than confining your identity only to gender.
And then, it's up to an individual.
Q. What is Kaaran body? Is it different for a devotee and Guru?
G: First understand about the gross body, then the subtle body, then you can think about Kaaran body.
It's same as well as different. Like how the space in one pot is same as any other pot, yet, it's different too.
Q. How do I make myself more useful to Guru?
G: Let this thought stay in the mind, let it flourish. Automatically, what is needed will get done.
Q. What's the best and the easiest way to make you happy?
G: why should I tell you, you should think 😀
Q. Different elements have been associated with different shapes, what's the significance or meanings of these associations?
G: Looking at the formless within the form of the elements is the wisdom. The five elements are all not complete. Something that is within the elements is what completes them. Like the body has no value without the soul.
Q. Is there any Shaastra that recommends women to do all the Household work? How to make males do Household work?
G: There are so many ladies here who make their husbands do all the work at home. Exchange ideas with them. Anyways, you're so good in high speed data transfer.

Titanic survivors
Data Management and Visualization: Week 1
Is the survival of the passengers on the titanic related to class?.
Purpose:
I'm a history buff, and one of the riddles I was most curious about was the sinking of the titanic. From the film to the true story, several points were raised with this accident in order to avoid future events similar to this one.
In this way, I intend to analyze the relationship between the survivors and the ticket acquired according to class (we have three classes), allowing us to analyze the class of society in terms of survival.
Topic Scope:
In addition to the relationship between social class (ticket purchased) and survival, another relevant point is gender and age. In the film, one of the points addressed is that women and children were the first people to board the lifeboats. Following older people. With this analysis we will check if it is true. Whether there is a correlation between gender and age with survival. Did children and women have a higher survival rate than men?
To carry out this study, I will follow the database indicated in the link:

The Wesley Crusher Friendship Ship
I'm watching Star Trek: The Next Generation for the first time all the way through, and I think that Wesley is the best at making friends, so he should captain his own ship and travel planet to planet making friends who join the crew and get into shenanigans together. So far, up to 02x04, these are the people allowed on the friendship ship.
Wesley Crusher- He's the captain of the ship, he needs to be there.
The Traveler 01x05- He shouldn't have died because I thought he was neat.
Yareena 01x03- she and Lieutenant Yar would’ve gotten along if it wasn’t for men, and they deserve to sit around and bitch about men being trash. Also she was a great fighter, and her vibes were immaculate.
Any of Wesley's friends from 01x07
All three kids who took the test with Wesley in 01x18
Mr. Okona 02x04- I like the bisexual vibes from the space rogue
Q
Lieutenant Yar- Let that poor lady deal with her trauma in peace. Don't give your characters an interesting and tragic backstory and never make it plot relevant.
Lwaxana Troi- but she’s on thin ice
Deanna Troi- Mom Energy “Don’t tell your dad”
William Riker- Dad Energy “Did you ask your mom? What did she say? This is a trap, this is a trap”
Wyatt Miller 01x11- Writers were cowards for not having him, Riker, Deanna, and Ariana all marry each other. I am no coward.
Ariana 01x11- Doesn't deserve to have some random incurable disease after meeting Dr. Crusher and Wyatt Miller. Diseased for heteronormativity and monogamy is inexcusable. She crossed the galaxy on a gut feeling, she'd be an excellent crew member.
Lieutenant La Forge- Data’s Best Friend
Lieutenant Commander Data- Lieutenant La Forge’s Best Friend
Lieutenant Worf- Klingons seem hyper competitive and I wanna see a holodeck sandcastle tournament.
Guinan- the vibes are good so far
Moriarty from Season 2 Episode 3- dude just wanted to feed people tea and crumpets and have an existential crisis, is that really a crime??? Forget that he kidnapped the doctor for a second.

the Story of the .32-20 Winchester Cartridge

The .32-20 Winchester cartridge, often simply referred to as .32-20 or the .32-20 WCF, is a bit of an enigma in the realm of small-bore ammunition. With roots stretching back to the late 19th century, it has seen service in everything from modest single-action revolvers to lever-action carbines. This vintage cartridge, despite its somewhat archaic status, continues to hold a small yet avid following among shooting enthusiasts. To understand its appeal and to gauge its significance in the annals of firearms history, we must delve into the details.
Cartridge and Bullet Dimensions
This cartridge was introduced by Winchester in 1882 for the company's Model 1873 lever-action rifle. The nomenclature ".32-20" refers to a .32 caliber bullet backed by 20 grains of black powder. The bullet diameter is actually .312 to .313 inches, while the case length stands at about 1.315 inches. The overall length varies depending on the bullet used, but it generally ranges from 1.590 to 1.605 inches. The rim diameter is approximately .408 inches, with a rim thickness of about .065 inches. The standard bullet weights are predominantly found in 80 to 115 grains, though exceptions exist.
Powder Loads
Originally loaded with black powder, the .32-20 was among the early cartridges to transition to smokeless powder. The powder capacity of the case allows for about 9 to 12 grains of smokeless powder, depending on the specific type used. Popular smokeless powders for reloading this cartridge include Alliant Unique, Accurate No. 5, and Winchester 231, among others. It's imperative for reloaders to consult reputable reloading manuals for safe powder charge data, as this is an older cartridge that doesn't tolerate excessive pressures well.
Historical Context and Development
The time period during which the .32-20 was developed was a golden era for firearms innovation. The lever-action rifle had proven itself to be a fast and reliable tool for both hunting and self-defense. What the market sought was a smaller, more versatile round that could be used in both rifles and handguns. The .32-20 was designed to offer reasonable accuracy and effectiveness for varmints and small game out to about 100-150 yards. The introduction of this cartridge coincided with America's westward expansion and it quickly found favor among settlers, ranchers, and lawmen.
Performance
Performance-wise, the .32-20 is no powerhouse. Out of a rifle barrel, the cartridge can launch an 80 to 100-grain bullet at velocities ranging from 1,200 to 1,700 feet per second, depending on the powder charge and bullet type. From a handgun, velocities range from approximately 850 to 1,000 feet per second. Given these modest numbers, the cartridge excels in its originally intended roles for shooting small game and pests. Its recoil is mild, making it a favorite for new shooters or those sensitive to recoil. However, it's not suitable for larger game or long-range engagements.
Firearms Chambered in .32-20
Several iconic firearms have been chambered in .32-20. Winchester's Model 1873 was the first, followed by the Winchester Model 1892 and the Marlin Model 1894. In the world of handguns, Colt's Single Action Army, the Smith & Wesson Model 10, and various models by Harrington & Richardson have utilized this cartridge. These firearms are often considered collector's items today, but they still perform admirably in the field.
What Has Superseded It
The .32-20 has largely been overtaken by more modern cartridges offering superior performance and versatility. Rounds like the .223 Remington, .243 Winchester, and even the .22 Long Rifle in semi-automatic platforms have outpaced it for most varmint and small game applications. Similarly, in handguns, the .38 Special and 9mm Lugerhave eclipsed the .32-20 in terms of popularity and effectiveness.
Current Use
While it may no longer be the go-to choice for most applications, the .32-20 has found a niche among cowboy action shooters, collectors, and those who appreciate its history. Reloaders still dabble with it, tweaking powder loads and bullet types for various shooting activities. It's still effective for what it was designed to do—small game and pest control at moderate ranges.
In summary, the .32-20 Winchester cartridge is a relic that refuses to fade into obscurity. With over a century of service under its belt, it stands as a testament to the innovation and ingenuity of late 19th-century firearms development. Although overshadowed by more modern calibers, it continues to hold a unique spot in the pantheon of American ammunition. The very fact that it remains relevant in some circles today speaks to its enduring appeal.
ETA: if you have the chance to acquire one in nice shape: DO IT!

WCF Data Services with Windows Phone - bandwidth requirements measured
In connection with testing Synchronization between a SQL Server Compact database on Windows Phone 8 and a SQL Server database (via a WCF Data Services service hosted in IIS), I have done some interesting observations regarding bandwidth requirements, that I would like to share. I am testing against the Chinook sample database, by downloading the entire PlaylistTrack table (8715 rows) to the device via my WCF Data Services service. On the server side, I am using the latest release version of the WCF Data Services server components, version 5.3.0. Version 5.1 or later includes the newer lightweight JSON format (just to compare I am also including sizes for the previous JSON format) On the server side, I have created a ASP.NET Web Application with a WCF Data Service, that exposes the Chinook database on my SQL Server via an Entity Framework DbContext. The power of WCF Data Services is that this requires basically no code to configure. I have configured my service like this: public class SyncService : DataService { // This method is called only once to initialize service-wide policies. public static void InitializeService(DataServiceConfiguration config) { config.UseVerboseErrors = true; //config.SetEntitySetAccessRule("TrackPurchases", EntitySetRights.WriteAppend); config.SetEntitySetAccessRule("*", EntitySetRights.AllRead); config.DataServiceBehavior.MaxProtocolVersion = DataServiceProtocolVersion.V3; } } In order to access the IIS Express hosted service from my Windows Phone 8 emulator, I followed the instructions here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsphone/develop/jj684580(v=vs.105).aspx To measure the size of the payload, I am using Fiddler2, by following the instructions here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/fiddler/archive/2010/10/15/fiddler-and-the-windows-phone-emulator.aspx The WCF Data Services team also supply a WCF Data Services client for Windows Phone, that can take advantage of a Service Reference, but this client has some severe limitations, that affects bandwidth consumption in a bad way: It only supports the XML based ATOM format, but you can enable compression, as described here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astoriateam/archive/2011/10/04/odata-compression-in-windows-phone-7-5-mango.aspx On the client side, I am simply using HttpWebRequest to call the REST url, and including support for gzip via the ICSharpCode.SharpZipLib library (for example http://nuget.org/packages/SharpZipLib-WP7/ ) Here is the implementation of the WebClient: static public async Task GetData(Uri uri, bool useJson = true, bool version3 = true, bool compress = true) { //uri = new Uri(uri.AbsoluteUri + "&format=json"); HttpWebRequest client = WebRequest.CreateHttp(uri); { if (compress) client.Headers = "deflate, gzip"; if (version3) { client.Headers = "3.0"; } else { client.Headers = "2.0"; } if (useJson) client.Accept = "application/json"; using (WebResponse response = await client.GetResponseAsync()) { string result = await response.GetResponseText(); DataContractJsonSerializer serializer = new DataContractJsonSerializer(typeof(T)); T resultType; using (MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream(Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes(result))) { resultType = (T)serializer.ReadObject(stream); } return resultType; } } } public static async Task GetResponseText(this WebResponse response) { using ( Stream stream = response.IsCompressed() ? new GZipInputStream(response.GetResponseStream()) : response.GetResponseStream()) { using (var reader = new StreamReader(stream)) { return await reader.ReadToEndAsync(); } } } public static bool IsCompressed(this WebResponse response) { return Regex.IsMatch((response.Headers ?? "") .ToLower(), "(gzip|deflate)"); } (I am using Microsoft.Threading.Tasks.Extensions.dll to implement GetResponseAsync) I am using DataContext classes generated by my SQL Server Compact Toolbox for deserialization, with a small addition - I have added this attribute to all EntitySet and EntityRef properties (this will be included in the next Toolbox release): I am calling the following URL: http://:2065/SyncService.svc/PlaylistTracks This is my test code: //ATOM-XML await WebClient.GetData(uri, false, false, false); //Verbose json await WebClient.GetData(uri, true, false, false); //Verbose json + gzip await WebClient.GetData(uri, true, false, true); //Plain json await WebClient.GetData(uri, true, true, false); //Plain json + gzip await WebClient.GetData(uri, true, true, true); public class PlaylistTrackRoot { public List value { get; set; } } And finally the unbelievable numbers for the download of the entire PlaylistTrack table with 8715 rows (remember, that ATOM is the default WCF Data Services client format) Payload type Body size (bytes) Body size (MB) ATOM-XML 9,322,665 (100 % – default DS client implementation) 8.89 MB JSON (verbose) 5,016,977 (54 %) 4.78 MB JSON (verbose) + gzip 328,410 (3,5 %) 0.31 MB JSON (plain) 790,845 (8,5 %) 0.75 MB JSON (plain) + gzip 43,023 (0,5 %) 0.04 MB So before you decide to use the WCF Data Services Windows Phone client, beware that the only format currently available is ATOM-XML. With the 5.1.0 or later desktop client, however, you can use the of the DataServiceContext to request JSON - ctx.Format.UseJson() – the default is still ATOM-XML.

Textual Variants of God's Word
A series of brief reflections on the Reformed notion of Scripture, and the questions that textual variants raise in that context.
Judging the Judge
The Supreme Judge, by which all controversies of religion are to be determined, and all decrees of councils, opinions of ancient writers, doctrines of men, and private spirits, are to be examined, and in whose sentence we are to rest, can be no other but the Holy Spirit speaking in the Scripture. ... The Old Testament in Hebrew (which was the native language of the people of God of old), and the New Testament in Greek (which at the time of the writing of it was most generally known to the nations), being immediately inspired by God, and by His singular care and providence kept pure in all ages, are therefore authentical; so as in all controversies of religion the church is finally to appeal unto them. Westminster Confession of Faith, 1.8 & 1.10
"This passage is not found in some early manuscripts."
Why do the findings of textual critics have immediate bearing on which passages of Scripture are the Word of God?
It appears the WCF and confessions like it create a situation where there is an original (albeit long-lost) text which alone is the immediately-inspired Scripture. What we hold in our hands is a modern reconstruction that we trust includes that original scripture. But, it may have additions to it. It is an article of faith that authentic scripture is preserved by God through the centuries. It is not an article of faith that only authentic scripture has been preserved. The Lord gives, and the textual critic takes away. There is an inspired text; the question is how it relates to the text we have. Is the true text a subset of our received text? "Just chip away everything that doesn't look like Scripture."
If the "Supreme Judge" in "all controversies of religion" is "the Holy Spirit speaking in the Scripture," the question becomes: are there parts of our Scriptures where the Spirit does not speak? Where can the Spirit be reliably found to speak? It appears that this job of discernment has fallen to the academy. Which academics? The ones you trust. Which should you trust? The ones who believe in the authority of— uh oh.
What mechanism is in place to determine whether a passage is Scripture? Who has the authority to remove a jot or tittle? How are these findings disseminated to the people of God? How does the church accept them? By a council? Is every individual supposed to examine the data and decide for themselves? Is the local pastor?
The Critic and the Christian
This is not to downplay the extraordinary wealth of manuscript evidence we have, or the confidence we can have in the reliable transmission for most of Scripture. Clearly we have more manuscripts of the OT and NT than we could ever hope to have for any other ancient writings. The textual critics have plenty to play with.
But—and this is a point that I don't think is taken seriously enough by apologists—the claims on scripture from within the faith are much higher than those from without. The historian thinks it probable a man named Jesus was crucified by Rome in the first century; very well. The lay faithful asks: "Did Jesus really say I must be baptized to be saved?" The woman in the pew does not wonder whether her copy of the Bible is generally reliable; that bar is far too low. She is, or is told she should be, building her life around every word of it. To throw it into doubt is to throw the very material of her faith and her life into doubt. Sure, removing the Pericope Adulterae has no real impact on the Christian faith—unless, of course, you yourself were once caught in adultery.
"Is the Holy Spirit speaking to me through this passage or not, pastor?"
"We used to think God said this, but now we're not so sure."
Pick One
"Nothing we believe to be doctrinally true, and nothing we are commanded to do, is in any way jeopardized by the variants."
Mark 16:9-20 is suspect because it appears to teach baptismal regeneration.
"Ought" vs "Is"
If the Holy Spirit worked through history to accomplish both the composition and the recognition of scripture (if the Bible is inspired in a forest, etc.), then the academic's work is just retracing the Spirit's process through time. "Some of the earliest manuscripts do not include 16:9-20." Yes, and some of the earliest canon lists do not have Hebrews, 2 and 3 John, 2 Peter, Jude, or Revelation. But it was the providence of God that led to their acceptance, right?
Is Scripture just the oldest manuscripts we can find? What if we found an earlier draft of Mark, with more sections missing? Do we bracket more passages? "No, it's not the final Gospel." Why not? If it's there, did the Spirit preserve it? "Because it's not what the Church received." Ah, now we're getting somewhere.
Maybe the Spirit has us on a quest for the True Scriptures, and is now working through the academy to clean barnacles from the ark of the Word. Maybe.
