What a fabulous weekend of football!
And I can't believe there is still one more match to go! The capstone match at that! A possible title decider! Manchester City vs. Arsenal. I am hoping for a draw so Liverpool can further solidify their spot as numero uno. They barely beat out Brighton today, but thanks to King Salah, they squeaked out their win (because let me tell you, it was NOT a convincing first half on their part).
As for other highlights of the weekend, Newcastle vs. West Ham will go down as a classic comeback game. West Ham looked to have the game sealed when they were leading 3-1, and especially since the poor Newcastle players continue to drop like flies due to injury. But what the comeback from them yesterday. Harvey Barnes probably had boots kissed by every one of his mates yesterday after the match.
Chelsea vs. Burnley was an all-round embarrassment. Burnley went down to ten men early on due to red card that should never have been a red card and then their coach, Vincent Kompany, also got sent off and I admire him for it because he was truly speaking out against that red card that was a sham.
Chelsea have really only survived this season due to Cole Palmer. Or rather, "Cold Palmer." Check out his cheeky little penalty from yesterday. He also had a nice goal, mostly due to a brilliant little flick on from Raheem Sterling, who hasn't done all that much this season, but that assist somewhat makes up for his lackluster year. But Chelsea being Chelsea, still only managed to get a draw against a ten-man Burnley, which is just downright pathetic.
The other fun game from yesterday was Man United vs. Brentford. The game was all Brentford. Man United were absolutely abysmal. Yet bring on Mason Mount, who has barely touched a ball all season due to injury, and he scores what we all thought was going to be the late winner. Haha not so! said Brentford with Kristoffer Ajer scoring in the 99th minute.
Anyway, the big game is starting now and I must give it all my attention!

we already kind guessed she had covid but sam confirmed it
https://www.foxsports.com.au/football/matildas/chelsea-2022-news-sam-kerr-matildas-wsl-cup-final-champions-league-chelsea-vs-wolfsburg/news-story/29e7466f806265202e74505235c40bbd
Sounds like she's had a poor run of illnesses lately. Hopefully that bout of Covid was the last of it for a while!
‘Everyone only sees 90 minutes’: Kerr reveals she played CL match with Covid-19
Chelsea and Matildas superstar Sam Kerr has revealed she played a Champions League match last year while suffering from Covid-19 – and also faced the USA while battling gastroenteritis.
Kerr exclusively told FoxSports.com.au that she tested positive in the days after last December’s final Champions League group stage match against Wolfsburg, but played while ill.
“So I woke up on the morning of the game and I was ill at about 8 o’clock – I was just really ill. I’d reported that I wasn’t feeling well, but I didn’t really have Covid symptoms, I was just feeling quite sick. And then as the day went on, I started to feel even worse and worse.
“And then I was like, ‘I have Covid, guys. Like I just know I have it.’ I just felt a different way than I’ve ever felt.”
Kerr played the entire match – a 4-0 defeat to the German side that saw an (understandably distracted) Chelsea fail to progress from the group stage – and came close to scoring when she found the woodwork.
But on her return to England, Kerr soon discovered she had the virus.
“I tested negative for like five days (before the game) because we had some positives (but) I tested negative. Had to do a pre-departure test – negative. We weren’t testing on the day because you only need to test the day before the game. And when we got back from Germany, I got tested and I got the test back the next day and I was positive.”
Two other teammates had been unable to travel to Germany for the match after testing positive for Covid-19, while a number of Kerr’s other teammates, as well as her girlfriend – talented American player Kirstie Mewis – subsequently tested positive afterwards.
“You know, at the end of the day everyone only sees the 90 minutes,” she said. “And I appreciate it, I’m a fan too of football and when your favourite player or your team doesn’t play well, you get angry. And I think there’s been multiple times in my life where I’ve been unable to perform because I’ve felt uncomfortable, I felt tired and that’s part of sport. Like you have to get up every day and play your best even when you’re not feeling well … It’s really, really hard to stay at the top of your game all the time.”
Kerr added: “That’s just an example of that. You just have to keep going and it freaking sucks sometimes, like I spent Christmas in iso then so (it was) terrible.”
While Kerr was left ‘with a headache for a day and half, two days’, she says it was nothing like representing the Matildas while battling gastroenteritis – a stunning revelation she also made to Foxsports.com.au.
“I had the flu a month earlier and I had gastro while I was in (Matildas) camp. When we played the US I had gastro. That was way worse. Like, I’d take Covid over the gastro any day. And I had the flu two months earlier and I had high temperatures, I thought I had Covid that time, but no.”
Kerr started both of the Matildas’ matches against the world number one US women’s side in November – a 1-1 draw and a 3-0 defeat. She did not reveal which of the two matches, in front of record crowds in Sydney and Newcastle, she played while battling illness - though she trained away from the group the day before the first match.

i think that now that womens football is getting bigger, the 'richer' (very generalised but you know what i mean) areas of the country are being more dominant, we can see now that more and more of the younger england girls are southern. just look at the younger girls in the senior squad - how many are from the south vs the north (especially the north east which was a former hotbed). because there's more money in woso in other parts of the country the north east can't keep up.
furthermore because even though there's a mint football culture here, we've only really got newcastle, who don't invest in our women's team, then boro and sunderland who do have academies but without anywhere near the funding of arsenal, chelsea, man city its harder for girls here to be scouted. durham is there too but i don't know how good their youth system is or even if it exists.
Tumblr media
here's a photo of the full pyramid and if you look at the first three tiers, there are three north east clubs. there is a measurable, visible difference between the representation of north eastern teams as compared to other regions and the elite body does not
also because not many of the senior pro teams are up in the north east its not an accessible sport really. durham is the only one in the top two but even though it places high, other teams in that tier are bigger and will probably be promoted before them. then coupled with the fact that none of the host cities for the euros are here is only furthering this problem of accessibility and interest.
there's a lot of factors involved and i think the fa needs to do better to work out how to preserve the legacy of women's football in the north east because it could very easily be lost. this is a really good article that sums up a lot of the issues https://netimesmagazine.co.uk/editorial/is-the-north-east-missing-an-open-goal-when-it-comes-to-womens-football/ (idk how to put links in asks so i can dm if people want?)
Oh wow thank you very much for your in depth contributions here, that table especially is super insightful!! I'll link the article here as well because it definitely puts forward a lot to this issue.
This dynamic makes the equation all the more complicated too, since its many of these norther teams which have driven women's football to were it is today but have had their demise because of it rather than reaping any benefits from it. Because yeah that table just goes to show how little of a presence the North has anymore, and from what I've garnered the Durham team is quite dependent on university players so I'm not sure how sustainable that will be either. Sustaining and diversifying women's football including ensuring growth of all regions is a lot easier said than done

Tuchel Sends Message to Forward Players in the Absence of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner
With the absence of best option strikers Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner, Chelsea football club supervisor Thomas Tuchel has made an impression on his forward players to get down to business and substantiate themselves. The two strikers got wounds over the most recent fourteen days and were both missing for Chelsea's last Premier League football excursion against Norwich.

Despite their unlucky deficiencies, Tuchel's young men oversaw without them and they wound up winning the tie 7-0. Talking in front of their end-of-the-week conflict with Newcastle, Tuchel made an impression on his players to be valiant in the assault. Presently we need to repay the misfortune from Romelu and Timo, Tuchel told the media. We scored before with various objective scorers. To know more about Chelsea Vs Liverpool Tickets click here.
"It is currently significantly more important that we show up in risky situations, in the crate with a ton of players. It is significant that we carry bodies to the adversary box, that we are bold and free enough to end our assaults with sufficient individuals in the crate and increment our opportunity to score. This is the thing that we need and possibly the justification for it. The Blues manager proceeded by saying he trusts the club has another top scorer toward the finish of the period.”
Tumblr media
In the end, we trust it won't be Jorgi toward the finish of the period as our top scorer! Not once more! We like him a ton, no offense to him except for we trust our primary folks, and our strikers are the folks who score routinely and we can give and make opportunities to them.

Epl soccer matches today - Premier League TV schedule and streaming links - World Soccer Talk
I contacted NBC and they said matches exclusive to Todaj would be available soon after the final whistle. Hopefully this is how it turns out but you never know. What is my best choice in purchasing a program to watch all of the Arsenal games? Is that even possible. Is it goday me or is this so cringeworthy? I dont care that Scott in Epl soccer matches today is sitting with his baby in Chelsea gear watching the game on TV, or Dan in Florida has dressed up his epl soccer matches today. They put on the screen that matvhes ex Cinncinnati Bengals Matvhes has tweeted he is excited to watch the game and we got a full screen picture of JJ Watts dogs sitting next to a swimming pool.
We then got lots of Rebecca Lowe rating peoples breakfasts. Someone make them stop. Get real guys, they are trying to attract a broader audience, which is all good for the game in the Soccwr.
Sometimes it will take a while for it to show up after the live game matched finished. Usually after an hour it should appear. Come on Norwich.
The video quality is outstanding, the way a premier league game should be seen. I then saw the Spanish replay of the Chelsea game on the Nbc Sports app and the video quality was less than stellar. If you have the Premier League site here your app should be pristine video quality. They have eye money and the resources.
NBC Sports gets a little lazy with the video quality because they know that no other tv network in the United States has any plans to buy the rights to broadcast the PL anytime in the near future. Can somebody please teach the idiots at NBC about what full epl soccer matches today stats are. This happens quite often. She never persists and changes the subject or cuts to a commercial break. Epl soccer matches today lucky are you guys!!!
Due to the virus, soccer watchers epl soccer matches today at the mercy of network TV. Todayy at first but boring. A second sighting could be most instructive. Also, when the League starts up, why not run the words the fans sing across the bottom of the screen.
Is that a good idea. Rex Hearn, 89, Manchester City supporter since 7. Surely after all these years some enterprising fan has collected them in book form to which you may refer. We understand! Rex Hearn. Love that we ssoccer the start of a fixture list. Just wondering about your source? Epl soccer matches today Ian, the clubs epl soccer matches today NBC Sports as well as other media outlets wait until everything is officially natches before publishing the schedules.
Thanks again. It says that it is on Telemundo in the official Premier League app and I am just epl soccer matches today to make sure that it is true. Sometimes the official Premier League app has the wrong listings. Yes, the Peacock games on Sunday will be on Gold as well. Brighton-Newcastle will be on Peacock and Gold also. Replays for all epl soccer matches today will be available after 9 pm ET.
I tried the Gold this year, but never had enough discipline to not elp up the scores until 9 pm. I will not sign up for package next rpl. In total, Peacock Premium will present more than 1, hours of Premier League live match and shoulder programming — the most robust offering ever available in the U.
Included are full-event replays for all matches on-demand after 9 p. Here in the U. IT makes it very easy to track your wagers, post the odds, track different sportsbooks to epl soccer matches today the best odds. Do you know if there is anything like that published in the U.
I would love to subscribe to it as it would make wagering on the games less time consuming and more enjoyable. I would imagine mathces there is they also might publish for the German, and other Premier level todah. Thanks for any help you can give me. Sky Sports picks the games for their television broadcasts, which sometimes require approval from police for games that are derbies or matches that are considered ssoccer be more dangerous requiring additional police protection for fans.
The process takes time. I blame all three of them because they have cheated a huge number of Premier soccer fans from a great deal of pleasure. A pox on all three of these selfish organizations! They took it away, now you have soccer pay to get it? I think you call that epl soccer matches today At least this Saturday and Sunday I actually will get 3 each day; unless that changes between now and then!!! Can anybody find a phone number to call Peacock for live help?
I mentioned before to very wary of giving them your credit card information. Rip off artists. So apparently, if you want to watch the reigning EPL champs, you need Peacock at the moment. Maybe in November I can watch Liverpool. I noticed that!!! A epl soccer matches today shame. Like Check here tell pel, it was fun while it lasted!
Looks like Christopher Harris was right. NBC is screwing over its cable subs a bit more this year. Chris: thanks for the link. I caution people again to be wary of this vendor. Do you want the shock of being wrongly charged? The hassle of dealing with an organization that hides its phone number?
Epl soccer matches today chat line appears inoperative? Other contact info made difficult to obtain? Even the epk writing up the case noted difficulty reaching them. Do you have the time and disposition to socccer epl soccer matches today such scocer for such a poor service? Will report outcome. Obviously it looks like an error occurred with your experience.
Mztches companies make mahches difficult to find their phone number. I already continue for Peacock Premium but, unlike every other non-HBO service, it is soccef to watch Peacock outside of the home.
My friend has an old Roku and a Amazon fire stick, toray the app is unavailable. And she is a Comcast customer. But if you are paying for it goday epl soccer matches today should be available wherever you epl soccer matches today to watch it. But NBC is making it very difficult for me to share my love of the game with others.
A quick update on epl soccer matches today Peacock tribulation. Good news. Thanks to Chris H. The sign up process was clunky, user unfriendly, and I had no confirmation that it went thru. So I tried again but this time more cautiously opting for the monthly, as my confidence in Peacock ebbed.
Bingo… access to the Prem! I received the monthly charge, but later also got charged for the whole epl soccer matches today for the failed sign up. My error was that, in my initial frustration to get activated, Jatches must have entered my email incorrectly.
So they were also charging me for that service, feeding to nobody or someone lucky! It was the result of a harried fan being careless out of frustration, but why not install a system that would require email validation? Looks like Peacock Premium subscribers have been screwed over??
How greedy is that? Just using it to force in new Peacock viewers!! I hope they lose the next Premier League contract. Chelsea Vs Arsenal - Christian Pulisic returns to training for Chelsea football club
The American forward harmed a lower leg while on worldwide obligation toward the beginning of September - his 6th huge injury in his two or more years at Chelsea. Chelsea football club have been helped in front of this current end of the week's outing to Newcastle by the news that United States winger Christian Pulisic has at long last gotten back to preparing.
Premier League admirers can get Premier League Football Tickets through our trusted online ticketing marketplace. Worldwideticketsandhospitality.com is the most reliable source to book Chelsea Vs Arsenal Tickets at exclusively discounted prices.
Tumblr media
The American hasn't been seen since scoring in Chelsea's initial round of the period, after which he contracted corona virus which kept him out until August's worldwide break. Pulisic then, at that point, disappeared with his public group, where he got a lower leg injury that saw him proceed to miss Chelsea's last 11 games in all contests. To know more about Chelsea Vs Liverpool Tickets click here.
It appears like that nonappearance is over as the Blues affirmed that Pulisic is at last back in preparing and he presently has all the earmarks of being in line for a small bunch of minutes off the seat on Saturday. With both Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner out harmed, Chelsea is fairly shy of numbers in assault, so Pulisic's return comes at a happy time for Thomas Tuchel's men as they get ready for a feverish winter plan.
Thursday's instructional meeting saw a couple of additional returning appearances, with Cesar Azpilicueta, N'Golo Kante and Andreas Christensen all required subsequent to missing Tuesday's Carabao Cup triumph over Southampton with different wounds. Azpilicueta got a minor shoulder injury and was joined uninvolved by Kante, who has been managing muscle weakness, and Christensen, who went through minor tooth medical procedure in the development to the game.
Tumblr media
There was, in any case, no report on Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The midfielder got a hip injury in the development toward the Southampton game and is yet to get back to preparing, recommending he will pass up a major opportunity against Newcastle. Chelsea enters Saturday's down top of the Premier League table and they will expect one more triumph against a Newcastle side actually discovering real confidence subsequent to firing Steve Bruce as director.

This is a classic case of a club being overvalued based on recent results, an easier schedule and current league positioning (an impressive fourth). These two teams are more evenly matched than the seven points that separate them in the table. Brighton got the benefit of a couple of calls against Leicester City and pulled out a win at Brentford that could've easily finished in a draw. Its toughest competition in five matches has been Leicester City and Everton.Meanwhile, Crystal Palace's opening five games have been the first under new manager Patrick Vieira, and they also featured title favorites Chelsea and Liverpool (both 3-0 losses). Palace's play has improved with each passing game and top forward acquisition Odsonne Edouard is still getting his feet wet. The Monday night stage at home could bring the best out of Palace.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard sent strong Timo Werner warning after Newcastle victory
Tumblr media
Ian Wright has urged Frank Lampard to keep deploying Chelsea new-boy Timo Werner in a wide position. The west Londoners signed the Germany international in the summer from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig, splashing out £47.6million to acquire his services.
After initially struggling to adapt to the demands and rigours of the Premier League, Werner has hit the ground running in recent weeks.
The 24-year-old has scored eight goals and provided four assists in all competitions this season, much to the delight of his manager.
Werner’s good run of form has coincided with Lampard deploying him on the left of a three-pronged attack.
And former Arsenal and West Ham ace Wright believes the Blues boss should refrain from playing him through the middle again.
JUST IN: Chelsea player ratings vs Newcastle: Abraham and Werner shine
The German had multiple opportunities to get on the scoresheet but spurned the chances that fell his way, although he wasn’t the only Blues ace to be guilty of being wasteful in front of goal.
Wright was less than impressed by the Blues’ finishing at St James’ Park and warned Lampard his troops need to develop a mean streak if they’re going to have any chance of mounting a sustained title challenge.
“It could’ve been too comfortable there and like Frank said they missed chances and they need to be a lot more ruthless if they are going to go on and get into that top four, or really challenge simply because it could have been a lot easier than it was,” Wright said of Chelsea’s fifth win of the season.
“You can go to a place like Newcastle and if you are that wasteful they can get you and come back and maybe nick one.
“I think today I thought Tammy was a lot better with his movement and got his goal in the end and Timo Werner he was kind of wasteful with the kind of chances that we know he normally will take.
“But other than that it could’ve been a lot more comfortable.”
Chelsea will be back in action on Tuesday night, locking horns with Ligue 1 side Rennes in their fourth Champions League Group E match.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-0 Manchester United, FA Cup third round [ad_1] Highlights: Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-0 Manchester United Manchester United failed to have a shot on target in a domestic game for the first time since January 2015 as they played out a goalless FA Cup draw at Molineux. With United having a two-legged EFL Cup semi-final against Manchester City this month, the Old Trafford replay will take up their only spare January midweek without a game. For Wolves, it adds to a marathon season that has already reached 36 games. In a largely disappointing rematch of last year's quarter-final, Marcus Rashford and Raul Jimenez both struck the woodwork in the second half.Rashford came close a minute after his introduction as a second-half substitute, when his shot looped off Wolves skipper Conor Coady.Jimenez's was all his own work as he raced down the byeline and then, completely lacking in support, surprised United keeper Sergio Romero by shooting from a virtually impossible angle, sending the ball skidding off the woodwork.Wolves' long season stretching resources Wolves, whose season started in July, gave a debut to 21-year-old striker Benny Ashley-Seal. He became the 26th player to start for Wolves during this campaign. In truth, the young Londoner did not sparkle and appeared to complain of feeling ill before he was replaced by Jimenez at the break.Wolves did create the best chance of the opening period, when a Pedro Neto corner was flicked on to Matt Doherty at the far post, only for Romero to make a fine reaction save.Romero repelled Neto with his feet when the Portuguese teenager collected Adama Traore's pass and created a space for a shot on the edge of the area after half-time, by which point the visitors were still to have a shot on target. They did have a penalty claim for a foul on Brandon Williams by Leander Dendocker, although the video assistant referee confirmed on-field official Paul Tierney's decision not to award itJuan Mata drifted a free-kick just wide and Rashford hit the bar when the ball looped up after Coady slid in to block 19 minutes from time, but Wolves keeper John Ruddy had still not made a save of note even then. Matt Doherty's header was ruled out by VAR after the ball struck the defender's arm on its way inUnited labour badly in attackNo-one could accuse the visitors of having an easy time of it in the FA Cup recently.Their past four games have all been away. Their opponents? Arsenal, Chelsea, Wolves and Wolves again. Molineux proved to be the end of their journey last season and for watching former manager Sir Alex Ferguson it must have felt a long time ago that United came to this venue and won 3-0 in a fourth-round tie in 2006.Ferguson's team that day included Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy, two of the greatest forwards in the club's history.Current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer simply does not have the same class in his squad and on a day when Rashford started on the bench and Anthony Martial was missing through illness, United laboured badly in attack.Typical of a first half in which the visitors failed to have a single shot on target was the moment when Harry Maguire won the ball with a thunderous tackle on Traore, only for Andreas Pereira to pick up possession on the halfway line then, rather than drive into space, plod forward a few strides, turn square with a slow pass and lose any momentum.Fixture congestion compoundedThe replay will be at Old Trafford between the next two rounds of Premier League fixtures and comes after both clubs - as with every other English professional club - had four matches to play over the festive period. For United, who like Wolves have reached the last 32 of the Europa League, it means that by the time these side play again in the league on 1 February, they will have played a minimum 18 games in 63 days - and even more if they do eventually reach the fourth round.Man of the match - Raul Jimenez (Wolves) Produced the one moment of class in the game when his shot from a tight angle struck the frame of the goalWolves stretch unbeaten run against United - the statsManchester United failed to have a single shot on target in this match, the second time they've done so in all competitions this season (also vs AZ in the Europa League).Wolves are unbeaten in their past five matches against Manchester United in all competitions (W2 D3), their longest such streak against the Red Devils since a run of six between 1959-1962.United failed to score for the first time in 14 meetings with Wolves in all competitions, since losing 1-0 in a Premier League match in January 2004.Manchester United have been taken to an FA Cup third-round replay for the first time since 2012-13, when they eliminated West Ham at Old Trafford.Wolves' Roman Saiss picked up his 11th card in all competitions this season (10 yellow, 1 red), more than any other Premier League player.'Moments of really good football' - what the managers saidWolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo, speaking to Match of the Day: "At times today we were at our best, especially in the second half. The first half was not so good. We were much better in the second half, created chances and had good combinations. There were moments of really good football."On his team's hectic schedule: "We must compete. We are always happy to face Manchester United. Whether you face them home or away, you always have to challenge yourself. This is what you want to become better - challenging yourself against the best teams."It's about having a team that can compete against any opponent."Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, speaking to Match of the Day: "I'm happier to be in the replay than going out - it's a tough place to come."They had chances - Sergio Romero made some great saves and we got off the hook with the header. Sergio has never let us down, he's kept so many clean sheets. He is a fantastic human being and a top professional."He's putting pressure on David de Gea and that's what we want. We want the best players in the world here."It's a competition I love. It's a fair result that we are both still in the cup."What next?Wolves are next in action in the Premier League at home to Newcastle on Saturday, 11 January (15:00 GMT kick-off). Manchester United entertain Manchester City in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg on Tuesday, 7 January (20:00 GMT) before playing Norwich in the Premier League at Old Trafford next Saturday (15:00 GMT). The Belgian got the issue in the Blues' 4-0 destruction of Malmo in the Champions League on Wednesday night at Stamford Bridge, as allies addressed Thomas Tuchel's choice to handle his frontman. After the game, the German yielded that Lukaku has played unreasonably many counterparts for club and country lately yet at the same time, he would not like to rest his record marking against the Swedish outfit.
With Lukaku out of the structure, he rather saw the Champions' League bunch game as the ideal chance to reconstruct some certainty in front of this present end of the week's Premier League conflict with Norwich. Yet, the choice before long blew up as Lukaku tottered off in the principal half, leaving Tuchel confronting an anxious stand-by to find the degree of the injury.
After a fairly provoking beginning to the Premier League football season, the Chelsea football club sits top of the heap in front of their forthcoming great run that sees any semblance of Norwich, Newcastle, Burnley, and Leicester in the following month. Chelsea then, at that point, takes on Manchester United on November 28, and Lukaku will be frantic to guarantee he is back fit and terminating against his previous side.
Tumblr media
Talking after the match, Tuchel disclosed his choice, to begin with, Lukaku, tolerating that he might get an examination from Chelsea associates. If I knew before I wouldn't have done it. Yet, you can't know it previously and it was essential that he was on the pitch and he began exceptionally solid, Tuchel said.
I talked with him about the circumstance, that I think he hefts a touch of mental exhaustion around with him. I imagine that is additionally typical however he is our number nine and is our reference forthright. The best thing against mental weakness is an objective and we realized we could be the prevailing group. We realized we needed to fabricate our assault today with Mason and Timo around him and him as the reference.
I had the solid conviction that in a Champions League match he could make something happen as far as scoring and being unequivocal, which he did because he was really impressive in our beginning. He took the foul and without him possibly it's not 2-0. To know more about Chelsea Football Tickets click here.
"So, I don't think twice about it. It's anything but a muscle injury or on account of actual weariness. He is somewhat exaggerated; this is my viewpoint and perhaps I'm wrong. However, this was a second to give him certainty and let him play. I don't think twice about it, things like this can occur. It was a misfortune."
Tumblr media
To exacerbate the situation for Tuchel, Lukaku's strike accomplice Timo Werner likewise got a hamstring issue. The German forward is relied upon to be uninvolved longer than Lukaku with Chelsea football club presently down to no-frills in the assault.
Christian Pulisic has not played since scoring in the 3-0 success over Crystal Palace on the first day of the season of the period because of a lower leg issue.  Hakim Ziyech has additionally been absent in late matches with Kai Havertz presently expected to lead the line. Tammy Abraham may now be thinking about what may have been on the off chance that he'd remained at Chelsea despite beginning life in Italy with Roma amazingly.

Down the Rabbit Hole with Scott
FPL Cup Night Stalker, Round One Preview
Greetings all,
It's the most wonderful time of them all, if you're into chasing down into the rabbit holes of the intertubes.  It's FPL Cup time, and I know most "serious" FPL players probably regard this as a trivial little side game, but I think it's just a weekly delivery of a whole new box of puzzles.  Each week we get just a name and a team page.  Who is this dude?  Is it a dude?  Is it a famous dude?  Is it a grumpy middle school history teacher from Newcastle?  Is it the future Australian Men's National Team Coach?  Is it a stripper/model/waitress/actress from South Africa?  Is it a high school cricket player from somewhere in Ireland?  The internet is a wonderful thing and with a few clicks here and a few clicks there, voila!, your opponent is no longer a random name but is a flesh and blood, real life person with whom you are locked in mortal combat.
I've been doing this thing for a few years for my minileague and wanted to share the fun.  I think I probably find about 2/3 of the opponents with pretty high degree of certainty.  And when I can't find them, I sure don't let the truth get in the way of a good story.  Here's what I dug up this week on the Cup opponents for the FMLFPL crew.  Team pages are linked.
Walsh -- 882 points, 167,084th place
Gooner XI -- Sayantan Bhattacharya -- 807 points, 1,215,432nd place
This is Sayantan's sixth year playing FPL, vs. Walsh's fifth, but the Indian gent has yet to crack the top 150K.  He played a Free Hit Chip back in GW12, but it really doesn't look like he made very much of it as he only changed about five players.  Weird.  His is a much more common name than you might initially think (unless you're Indian and it probably seems like Sean Thompson, or something like that), and the search took a while.  He's in a bunch of leagues, but when I looked at the smallest of them, I found a bunch of guys who all had this guy as one of their friends, and I think this must be his page, pretending he's a Gooner and shit because Gooner Fans are generally kind of insane.  But really?  Thomas Vermaelen?  And then I saw the URL to the page and it has his actual name.  Yup, that's him.  So what does he do? Not really sure.  The other guys in his smallest league all seem to be engineer types at various places about India, but there doesn't look like a common thread to their training.  So I think they basically sit around the Indian version of GoonerSlack and just talk shit on Spurs all day long. Sound about right?
This one seems like it ought to be a walkover with Walsh's Sterling, Silva, Salah differentials and with the Chelsea defense.  Kun and Lukaku are Sayantan's only hope.  Smash him Walsh!
Alon -- 859 points, 354,675th place
TB -- Su Myat -- 835 points, 679,258th place
This is the second season for Su, who flies the Myanmar flag, and who claims a Chelsea allegiance.  Su finished 1.1 million last year and is doing better this year.  Now first off, if you do a FB search for Su Myat, about the first three pages of links that come up, or maybe even more, all look like they work at one of those strip mall foot massage places with the sliding windows and shady price menus and the exiting clients who are scanning the parking lot furtively to make sure nobody recognizes them.  And none of the people in these links happen to be wearing Chelsea kit in their pictures.  And some aren't wearing very much, period.  In fact like the whole list consists of people like that who really don't look like they would even know what FPL was.  This was the only guy I saw while scrolling. And he doesn't look particularly interested in FPL either. Ultimately I had to give up looking for this one for fear that the kids would walk through and see some dubious images while I was hunting for this needle in a haystack.  No happy ending here.
The injuries could hit Alon on this one with Morata out, but if Kane Kanes like Kane can Kane, then it's not going to be much fun time for Su.  I think Alon should see this one through.
Producer Nate  -- 891 points, 115,516th place
JC junior the kop FC -- Khuzaimi Ismail -- 814 points, 1,062,611st place
This is the second FPL season for Khuzaimi while it is Nate's sixth.  Nate topped out at 24K two years ago, while his Malaysian opponent finished 694K in his debut season.  Malaysian opponents are sooo hard to track down in general, but this is the guy here.  Three of the guys common to one of his minileagues are all FB friends and are flying this same banner in their pictures, whatever it is.  It says he is from London but currently lives in Shah Alam, Malaysia.  He used to work at Euphoria, which says it is some kind of Marketing and Social Media Agency, but looks maybe kinda like a nightclub place also.  Maybe Nate could get a gig there for the band?  Road trip to Malaysia!  Who's in?!?!?
Khuzaimi has Aguero teed up and ready to tit against Swansea, and KDB could add to the damage, but I think those could be countered by Kane and Silva if they get their large units swinging in the box as well.  Nate probably has an edge on the defender front, especially if Jones makes it back into the lineup.  Show this lad how the entertainment business is properly run, Nate!
Guest Jason -- 875 points, 213,357th place
Beast FC -- Lochie Rumble -- 603 points, 4,601,569th place
Who does this?  This is a first year account for Lochie and there hasn't been a single roster move all season.  No lineup change.  No transfers.  And yeah, I know that some people make teams to enter into some kind of set it/forget it contest where you have one lineup that stays set for the whole season.  But this is not the kind of lineup you would come up with if you were doing that.  Sam McQueen, Rob Holding, and Emre Can are in the starting lineup, along with Rajiv van La Parra.  Jack Butland is the vice captain pressed into action whenever autoCap Kun sits out or fractures his torso.  Allegedly.  This team isn't in any minileagues and that's not even really a name, I don't think, so I doubt we'll get a peek at the psycho who came up with this thing, but like a science experiment gone bad, it seems to have been properly abandoned.  But wait...  I never totally quit, and it turns out that Lochie Rumble is actually a Twitter account with two followers, but who has liked 3,660 things.  I hope they don't actually like their team.  And he's also some kind of gamer, I guess.  I'm going to suggest that he stick to things other than FPL.
Aguero, KDB and Mane for Lochie, but the rest of the team is shite and Jason should move on to the next round.
Derek -- 909 points, 53,435th place
The Blues -- (some Bulgarian name -- seems to translate as Milen Dilov) -- 577 points, 4,746,427th place
It's Milen's first FPL season and it might be his last, by the looks of it.  It's Derek's second year after finishing 47K in his 2016/17 debut.  Milen did nothing in the first few weeks, but then in GW5 made three transfers, and that has been it.  And that week, he decided to triple captain Morata at home against Arsenal.  Obviously a Chelsea fan with his team name and that move.  He got a 1x3=3 point haul after Morata played 88 minutes and only produced a yellow card as a return.  Whoops.  Milen isn't in any minileagues so doesn't have any cross linking that way.  I have no way of knowing which of the multiple Milen Dilovs is actually "running" this team, but I'm gonna go with this guy, because the pictures on his page are pretty awesome and he works at Monster Energy.
Derek should win this one pretty easily.  The midfield matchup is really one-sided.  And Kane.  And etc.  Go do it Derek!
Scott -- 919 points, 32,852nd place
TGH -- Toby Hollingsworth -- 752 points, 2,529,919th place
And finally my team! This is another first year FPL player who has gone Ghost.  He made his single roster transaction in GW5.  The lineup has stayed the same since, and he only made it into the Cup because his armband is on Kane.  Kane produced 24 of Toby's 44 points last week.  Really not fair that he gets in, and so many active players don't.  Booooo Toby!  Anyway, here is Toby on Facebook.  His picture from back in 2013 is rather embarrassing, and in 2012 he is partying in a room with some Justin Bieber posters on the wall.  At least one of the others in his one minileague lives in Newcastle and two of them seem to have been in college together at Leeds Beckett University.  Can't seem to lock down on where Toby lives now, or maybe he's just on the road following the Beebz. Anyway, he sure isn't tending to his team, so hopefully I can just put him out of his misery, but you never know what happens in H2H.
Toby will get eleven out on the pitch, but just barely and I think I have the edge in midfield differentials and should hopefully manage cleans from three, if not four of my defenders.
Crazy, yeah, but only marginally more crazy than the existence of this game at all, when you think about it...
Good luck everybody!  Go smash those random opponents!  They deserve it.

The best things about every Champions League matchup
Tumblr media
Also: What is Arsenal going to do now that they’ve sacked Unai Emery?
Hello, and welcome back to another edition of Tactically Naive, SB Nation’s weekly football/soccer/kickball column. This week we have mostly been sobbing quietly in the corner.
THESE ARE THE BEST TEAMS
And this is the best bit of the competition, isn’t it? When the fluff of the group stage is out of the way and we get down to the knockout football. Two legs. Floodlights. One winner, one loser. PSG making a mess on the floor again. A nice chilled pint of delicious Gazprom.
Feel your eyes widen and your brain cool. Don’t fight it. Relax into it. These are the best teams. More Gazprom? There you go. Follow the ball. Back and forth. The same teams, the same games, over and over and over and over … close your eyes. And—
Huh? Oh? Sorry about that, drifted off a bit. Where were we? Ah yes. Today was the draw for the last 16 of the Champions League and — well, you remember how last week it was appalling how the same flippin’ teams get through every time? Turns out those same flippin’ teams getting drawn against one another makes everything okay. Let’s go tie by tie.
Borussia Dortmund vs. Paris Saint-Germain
This is the easiest one to call. Sure, Dortmund have had a fairly chaotic start to the season. But there’s a couple of months to go before the games, so one of two things will have happened: Either they’ll have sorted themselves out, or they’ll have fired Lucien Favre smack in the middle of the new manager bounce. Either way, PSG will be strolling along at the top of Ligue 1, hoping that this is the year they finally turn vast financial power into knockout results.
This is not the year. PSG are going to get humiliated, again, because they are cursed. Dark and ancient forces are arrayed against them, and you can’t spend your way past magic.
The only real question is: if Favre does go, which ex-Dortmund player is the narrative equivalent of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer? What’s Karl-Heinz Riedle up to these days?

Atalanta vs. Valencia
As a column, we at Tactically Naive are studiously, carefully neutral: we hate all football teams equally, only slightly less than we hate ourselves. But we might have to make an exception for Atalanta, who are the very picture of a neutral’s favourite. Cute football, plenty of goals, punching way above their weight and enjoying every minute of it. Curse them for making us feel again.
Atletico Madrid vs. Liverpool
Be nice to finally find out the answer to that spear vs. shield, fox vs. hound, unstoppable force vs. immovable object problem, won’t it?
Chelsea vs. Bayern Munich
This is going to be two very good games of football. Frank Lampard, man of the people, has put together a Chelsea side that play some very nice football but absolutely cannot defend, and we’ve already had the ridiculous 4-4 against Ajax and the only slightly less ridiculous 2-2 against Valencia. Against Robert Lewandowski? Might get biblical.
Sadly, the whole occasion will be ruined when Bayern attempt to buy Callum Hudson-Odoi at half-time of the second leg, and a fight breaks out between the sporting directors. Bayern later formally apologise for the actions of Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, saying that he “should not have thrown himself elbow-first into Bruce Buck shouting ‘that’s for Drogba in 2012, you [redacted]’.”
Lyon vs. Juventus
Could be a bit one-sided, this. Juventus strolled through their group, while Lyon finished only a point ahead of Benfica and Zenit in Group G. But still, there’s hope. For while there are only a few footballers who we can imagine scoring a winning goal and then pulling out the Ronaldo look-at-me spin celebration, that list includes Lyon’s Memphis Depay. The adorable buffoon.
Tottenham Hotspur vs. RB Leipzig
Honestly, the footballing world cannot lose here. One of two beautiful things is guaranteed to happen. Either Spurs strike a blow for Proper Football by dispatching the cynical advertising construct of Red Bull Leipzig, or Jose Mourinho gets humiliated by a can of fizzy pop.
Napoli vs. Barcelona
It is, perhaps, the nature of Napoli, to bring hope wherever they go. For they are Italy’s greatest club. Not best, which is boring; not most successful, which is accountancy; but greatest, which is dignification made up of equal parts glory, failure, and romance. As such, they exist in this strange world of contradictory possibility. They could do anything. They could do nothing, beautifully. They could do both.
Will they do something against Barca? Probably not. Lionel Messi’s very good. But Napoli got the best of Maradona while Barcelona didn’t, and so they’re already the moral victors. For some rather smudged definition of “moral.”
A new dawn for Arsenal
Arsenal are not in the Champions League. But Arsenal have recently sacked Unai Emery, the most Europa League manager who ever Europa Leagued, so we can be fairly sure they’d quite like to get back to the big time. And it looks like they’ve found their route back: after a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Champions League big-timers Manchester City over the weekend, they’ve decided to appoint the genius behind that drubbing.
Congratulations to the new manager of Arsenal: Pep Guardiola!
[puts finger to ear] Wait, what? Oh. Oh dear.
Congratulations to the new manager of Arsenal: Mikel Arteta?
He hasn’t got the job yet. But the City assistant with the fungible hair has been entertaining Arsenal dignitaries. Chief executive Vinai Venkatesham and club lawyer Huss Fahmy were photographed leaving Arteta’s home around 1:20 a.m. Obviously we can’t rule out that they were just caught up in a really intense Settlers of Catan session. But it looks suggestive.
Anyway, Arteta ticks a lot of boxes. First of all, the fact that City walked through Arsenal so easily suggests that their management team had done some decent thinking about Arsenal’s strengths and weaknesses, and how best to counter the former and exploit the latter. Sounds basic, but there were times when you wondered if Emery had ever thought to do the same.
Beyond the pointlessly cruel jokes at the expense of a man who probably tried his best, Arteta has played for Arsenal and has spent a couple of years making notes next to Guardiola. Those are things that might be important. Alternatively, they are things that might be completely meaningless. But those are the things that will get him the job, because honestly there aren’t many other options.
Europe’s biggest clubs are burning through managers faster than European football can produce them. If Arteta gets the job, then three of last season’s Big Six will be in the hands of former players with limited experience. And they’ll all be below Brendan Rodgers in the table. There’s probably a lesson in there somewhere.
Still, if you need a defensive coach, Mikel, don’t worry. Big Sam is here to help.
Sam Allardyce on Arsenal's defence: “I could come and work on Arsenal’s defence and make them better tomorrow, not a problem whatsoever. I’ve done it everywhere I’ve been – Newcastle, Blackburn, Bolton, West Ham Crystal Palace, Everton, I’ve done it all there." pic.twitter.com/SvLTyx5mgq
