I fucking love the commentary of what higher power perceives Mother Goose through the permeance of the ink enshrined in the Canonade.
Characters don’t have agency--it’s the best authors that give that illusion but anyone who has done any sort of media critical commentary will remind viewers and readers over and over that characters don’t make choices. The closest story-telling can get is through the communal act of actual play.
But from a meta perspective, to take this natural 20 fear even deeper, the content of the NeverAfter isn’t only written by the original authors. Fanwork is also being created.
The perspective of their stories is constantly changing and more versions are being written and more asterixis are volleyed about all willynilly by uncaring content creators who only care about a good story, then after the GrimDark fairytale retelling resurgence of the early 2000s, no wonder the archetypal Step-Mother is swallowing every mother she can get her hands on.

Like a lot of business concepts, innovation is so much easier to define than do!
Yet one of the valuable lessons 2020 has given us is that we are better off (as businesses and as  individuals) when we get comfortable with the idea of change. CEO Fiona Kesby talks about how Virtual Assistants can help your business be more innovative in this episode of All In!
All In is brought to you by Go Virtual Assistants, an awarding-winning managed operations business in sunny Cebu in the Philippines!
Gem: Are you ready to go,
Gem and Jason: All In?
Gem: I'm Gem.
Jason: And I'm Jason.
Gem: Does your business have all the skills you need to get ready for post pandemic growth? Hello I'm Gem and welcome to All In, where we talk about how remarkable virtual assistants can help your business adapt and thrive, even in the midst of the pandemic.
Gem: Hello, Fiona! I understand that there's some wonderful and exciting news for Global Office PH, the whole tribe and our clients!
Fiona Kesby: Hi, Gem. Yes, we do have wonderful news for the whole tribe. Last September the 21st, we were awarded a silver medal in the Asia Pacific Stevie Awards for 2020. It's our first Stevie and our category was 'Innovative Management in Business, Product and Services Industry'. Of course, the ceremony took place online. A few days after that the organizers of another prestigious Business Award program, the Asia CEO Awards reached out to us to let us know that we were chosen as part of the 'Circle of Excellence' in the SME Company of the Year category. And then we found out that we were awarded a 'Business Excellence' in the Biz Awards, which are presented by the world confederation of businesses. Previous winners for those awards include the likes of Microsoft, American Airlines, and Sheraton, just to name a few big brands. And this year, the award ceremony was supposed to take place in Doha, but of course with the pandemic, that's now most likely to take place online. And then there is the announcement of the ACES Awards, and we are awarded Asia's Most Promising SME.
Gem: A wonderful news and a big congratulations to everyone. The Go-VA tribe has certainly thrived in the midst of a pandemic. And as a message you and Matt have shared to everyone, the Go-VA tribe has not let a good crisis go to waste.
Fiona Kesby: Oh that is so true, Gemstar. And it's such a great honor to gain these recognitions in any given year. And somehow, it feels more rewarding to receive these honors in 2020, which is no doubt the most challenging year for, you know, all businesses within the last century.
Gem: Truly.
Fiona Kesby: Now these honors remind us that every crisis that happens bring with it the seeds of the next great opportunities, and we just need to be more driven than ever. We need to stay humble and keep on discovering new skills, ideas, and even business models. And we choose to show up every single day.
Gem: Now, Fiona in your experience, what inspires innovation? And, how do we stay innovative during a crisis like a pandemic?
Fiona Kesby: Innovation, in the simplest terms, is the introduction of a new idea or a new way of doing things. And like most definitions, it's so much easier to say then do. It takes extra courage and discipline to innovate during a crisis. So like COVID-19, because the natural tendency, when most people feel unsure or fearful, is to want to retreat, at least for a while. And there's that temptation to be more conservative than usual, because times are tough. And we do need to be prudent, especially about how we use resources. I love what the poet William Blake said about innovation. "What is now proved was once only imagined." Isn't that great? It's a reminder that to be innovative, we have to choose to be different. Or as the Asia CEO Awards criteria put it, we have to go after pioneering achievements, we have to imagine how different the situation could be and then figure out how we'll get there. Now it's so much easier to take the well-worn path and to do what most others in our industry or field are doing. Yet, that's not at all imaginative. It doesn't change things for the better. And if there's anything we've learned this year, it's that we are better off when we get comfortable with the idea of change, when we embrace change instead of avoiding or resisting it. When we first decided to offer private medical insurance to all the tribe, starting on day one, we were told that it wasn't such a good idea, you know, wait the six months as everyone else was doing in them, some companies even waited a year. This pandemic has shown us how important the decision was. The next innovation we are pursuing in this area is providing telemedicine service for up to six dependents for each team member. People need to access medical advice, but don't feel safe going to clinics or hospitals at the moment. And also in Cebu City, there has been no public transport. It has been really difficult to access, basic doctor and hospital care. So our dev team have built a platform based on the quicklook.to technology that allows organizations to provide remote video support. And it was designed with the needs of trade services and tech support departments in mind. And then we saw that we could be using this platform to connect doctors and nurses, with people who need their advice. So that's what we want to provide next.
Gem: That's amazing. You are taking the value of care to a whole new level, and this crisis gave way to this opportunity. Now, how can small or medium companies which have more modest resources than larger companies, keep on innovating?
Fiona Kesby: While it's true that innovation often requires serious investments, it's also driven by other factors like culture. It's important for businesses to stay open to learning, in fact, invest time to learn and show leadership by example. One of the best decisions we've made so far was to introduce a Chief Happiness Officer, whose job was to make sure that everyone in the tribe felt valued, safe and happy. Now, that was an idea inspired by Zappos, the online shoe store that's known for its exceptional customer service and its culture. And when I had the chance to visit the Zappos culture camp in Las Vegas, that was one of the ideas that stood out to me. Now the challenge is to keep the culture as caring and kind as ever, even if our interactions are now mostly online. So keep lifting our engagement and morale so that everyone continues to feel safe and to deliver results and exceed expectations. Every business can become more innovative. Here's where virtual assistants and global teams come in. By working with highly skilled virtual assistants from the Philippines, business owners and their onshore teams can then delegate their core repeatable task. This way, business leaders can free up more of their time and devote their energy to innovation, which is crucial now that customers priorities and habits have changed so dramatically. So choose to innovate, rather than staying the same.
Gem: Indeed, taking massive action is the only real choice. Thank you Fiona for this inspiring chat once again, and congratulations!

Why Your Next Campaign should include User Generated Content
First things first, exactly what is Individual Generated Web Content? UGC is any content created and also published by a consumer, and with 76% of customers locating material uploaded by various other customers to be extra honest compared to well-known material *, it's definitely worth considering factoring UGC into your advertising strategy.
What's the distinction between UGC and also influencer advertising and marketing? UGC has no official connection with the brand - they typically aren't being paid and also there is no interaction with the brand regarding just what material the individual releases. In some cases the UGC might can be found in all its typo would certainly, text-speak glory ... however hey, they've taken time out of their day to chat regarding your service, so it's all good!
Time to get out of your advertising and marketing shoes for a minute as well as ask on your own which of the adhering to options you locate extra genuine:
" We assume our product/service is excellent - why don't you buy it?"
" I acquired this and I believe it's truly wonderful. Possibly you might like it also?"
We're mosting likely to go in advance and also think, like 92% of customers, you 'd trust a referral from an additional consumer over well-known web content. That's a quite indisputable need to motivate UGC to take centre stage.
Why UGC is on the rise
Jose de Cabo, co-founder of Olapic, puts it completely: "Brand marketing is dealing with an inflection factor. Customer trust is at a lowest level. Adblocking is quick rising throughout a time when we are being conditioned to not trust what we see - fake news is proliferating as well as people are hesitant of marketing messages. Gone are the days of brands enforcing a perfect on the consumer. Millennials desire to purchase from brand names that are in-line with their very own values and mean something or have a strong purpose. They intend to see themselves reflected in the brand and also do not desire to really feel like they are being mass marketed to. Brands should discover means to interact with relevant, relatable and individualized content. The fostering of customer images in marketing initiatives is an optimal means for brands to mirror the customer and also connect a more real message that reverberates with them. Business that embrace the voice of the client are the ones that will thrive in this new digital landscape."
How UGC boosts brand name awareness
Charlotte Sheridan, of The Tiny Biz Professional, concurs that UGC can cause increased brand direct exposure: "The benefits of using your target market to produce material countless. Take reach, as an example: whenever someone mentions your brand on social media sites, you are reaching their whole target market as well. With 4.2 billion likes on Instagram on a daily basis and also the typical Facebook customer having around 338 close friends - that's a substantial potential audience that you are taking advantage of that might or else not come right into contact with your brand.
Even on a little scale, this will certainly suggest raised direct exposure. If you have 10 people who use three social media networks with around 100 pals, followers or links on each as well as they upload on each of these platforms - you've now possibly been seen by an added 3000 people! Reasonably, it doesn't always quite function like that. Nonetheless, even if simply 10% of that audience sees the messages - that's an added 300 potential clients from simply ten people embracing your project."
Why it's not about Instagram
Curating reviews and also permitting potential customers to see them in a plainly noticeable put on your brand name's internet site is also a type of UGC, as well as one that's been around for a while.
Zack Neary-Hayes, Search Engine Optimization Professional, says: "UGC is a an extremely flexible and effective advertising and marketing method when made use of appropriately. It helps to add social validation to a website, which is fantastic for conversions.
This area has more than 202 pages of testimonials, a lot of them favorable, but some negative. This is really a good thing, as just having positive reviews could make people suspicious of phony testimonials, which is a concern that Amazon.com has actually dealt with lately. To battle this, Eve have made use of a 'verified customer' badge to indicate that the purchase came straight from their website. Again, this is another huge count on signal for possible buyers.
UGC, as well as assesses in certain, makes services and products feel much more genuine and human, which raises buyer self-confidence. If a target market really feels a lot more safe and also certain in the product, conversions will increase. This is actually crucial for a product like Eve's, which traditionally, would be checked and also gotten face to face."
How to efficiently utilize UGC in your following campaign
Making a Difference Locally (please note: among our beautiful customers) is a charitable organisation. In addition to producing owned material for MADL's social media networks, a big component of our advertising and marketing method is sharing inspirational UGC with MADL's fans. This allows us to show exactly how charities, and also contributions, make a massive distinction to local neighborhoods through our followers voices - not simply our own. The action from followers demonstrates how much brand loyalty has actually been strengthened via making use of UGC, with MADL interaction raising by 148% on Twitter and also 22% on Facebook given that 2016.
Other top brands have actually also had extraordinary success from UGC. Hands up if you've come across Burberry's the Art of the Trench project? It's a basic principle: customers could share pictures of themselves putting on a Burberry trench coat on a web site, and also possible clients could browse the gallery. Both inspirational and also aspirational, the project appealed to both existing consumers as well as potential brand-new ones. E-commerce sales grew 50% year-on-year, as well as the site got to 7.5 million views in just one year - fantastic outcomes for an amazing project. Various other industry-leading UGC advertising and marketing projects include Starbucks' White Cup Contest, Tourism Queenland's "The Ideal Task in The Globe" project and also Coca-Cola's "Share a Coke" campaign.
For smaller brand names, UGC could additionally be unbelievably powerful. Shaherazad Umbreen, of www.shaherazad.com, claims: "Our team believe that UGC is the most empowering and also impactful kind of content. This is why every one of my 'versions' are not versions in all however 'genuine ladies'. Make money from our footwear go to money the education and learning of ladies and also girls living in hardship as well as those ladies themselves provide UGC to complete the genuine marketing circle and motivate more future clients."
Jeremy Stern, Taking Care Of Director at PromoVeritas, states: "Most of our clients' campaigns include creative kinds of UGC such as selfies, pictures, layouts, tie-breakers as well as creations. UGC promos have the tendency to develop a larger buzz as well as are more probable to go viral - specifically when there is voting entailed.'
In regards to results, UGC can accomplish 6.9 times higher involvement compared to brand content on Facebook, according to Mavrck. There's no rejecting that, in today's fast-moving social media world, UGC could be the means forward for your brand.
The (potential) risks of UGC
Okay, Walkers, we're taking a look at you. The #WalkersWave project encouraged individuals to tweet a photo along with the hashtag, resulting in an automated video on the Walkers Twitter feed revealing Gary Lineker holding up their image with a large smile. It did not go well, thanks to some really negative preference entries, which triggered the project to be pulled.
To alleviate risks such as these, invisage the problems that can happen. Have a brainstorm with the team as well as, if somebody pipes up with "hi there, wouldn't someone simply upload a picture of [insert name]" it would certainly be a good idea to hear them. Never assume consumers "just will not go there". They have, as well as they will.
Jeremy Stern continues: 'This brings us to the pitfalls - voting competitors have to be meticulously intended and also confirmed by independent experts or else they can motivate with cheating and adjustment. If the general public smell of a deceit or detraction, like when the champion of a competition to create Doncaster Rovers' new team set simply occurred to be Louis from One Direction, it could impact their confidence in the brand as well as their loyalty. An additional big risk from UGC is small amounts - numerous brands have actually seen their online reputations damaged over night by improper access uploaded on social networks websites that haven't been monitored effectively creating huge embarrassment - Boaty McBoatface is an extremely tame example! You can likewise be at danger from an ASA judgment if you don't have an independent court entailed in your evaluating panel - something many brand names tend to ignore at their peril.
To ensure that your UGC promotion is a champion, you have to plan ahead and have a strong collection of Terms that cover-off any type of upcoming calamities. Structure checks as well as time for moderation and also adjudication into your campaign strategy is additionally important.'
Top tips for producing successful UGC campaigns
Ask customers to share pictures/ tales with you - provide a clear CTA to urge followers to post
Create a brand hashtag and also use this on social media, particularly Instagram, to check involvement from your "brand ambassadors"
Monitor indirect points out of your products, brand name or service
Develop a "wall surface" of UGC so users could see the community they're component of
Consider where you can repurpose UGC to build trust both online and offline
Be conscious of exactly what can fail when you motivate users to engage with your brand name, and also be prepared to produce fires quickly
Executed well, a UGC project could work marvels for your brand name's engagement and, ultimately, loyalty long life. Take straightforward actions such as sharing as well as engaging with posts customers have labelled your brand name into check the waters, before developing to develop brand hashtags and broader UGC campaigns.

10 To Watch : Mayor’s Edition 1620
RICK HORROW’S TOP 10 SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 6 : MAYOR’S EDITION
with Jacob Aere

The sports world and beyond remembers David Stern. Former Commissioner David Stern took the NBA into the modern era over the course of his 30 years as Commissioner after he assumed the role in 1984. By the time he left the Commissioner’s office in 2014, a league that had once struggled for a foothold had grown into a more than $5 billion-a-year industry. The NBA's longest-serving commissioner, Stern was credited with transforming the NBA into the global powerhouse it is today, overseeing major uplifts in commercial revenue and media coverage, domestic and international expansion, and a surge in global popularity. Under Stern, the NBA added seven new franchises, including two in Canada, and grew into a commercial behemoth. It also created the WNBA in 1997 and a developmental league, now known as the G League, in 2001. Thanks largely to Stern, the NBA is now revered as a sports industry pioneer and innovator. Rick had the privilege to work with Commissioner Stern on the formation of the Miami Heat and the eventual Oklahoma City Thunder, as well as interviewing him numerous times. He will be greatly missed.
Endeavor acquired majority equity ownership stake in experiential hospitality leader On Location Experiences from existing investors. Last week, Beverly-Hills based agency giant Endeavor announced that it had acquired On Location Experiences. The reported $660 million deal will give Endeavor a majority stake in the hospitality and live events company, which works with the NFL, the NCAA, and the PGA Tour, among other entities. The NFL, through its strategic investment arm, 32 Equity, will continue to be a minority shareholder and retain its seat on the Company’s Board of Directors. On Location will seek to enhance its existing sports and entertainment offerings, including its long-term relationship with the NFL, by leveraging Endeavor’s access to content and experiences across entertainment, sports and fashion. The deal will also help to strengthen Endeavor properties, including the UFC, which it acquired in 2016 for $4 billion. Former Bloomberg, Westwood One, and Time Inc. executive, Paul Caine, will lead the newly integrated entity. The deal is the latest in a flurry of acquisitions by major Hollywood talent agencies as they expand into other entertainment disciplines, particularly music and sports.
Tennis Australia announces a charity match to support bushfire relief. According to The Guardian, Australian tennis player Nick Krygios’ plans for a massive fundraising effort for bushfire victims has resulted in a tennis exhibition match set to feature some of the world’s top players. Kyrgios kicked off a flood of donations to the fundraising campaign from sporting names around Australia, including American basketballer LaMelo Ball. After Krygios’ initial push, Tennis Australia announced “Rally For Relief,” an exhibition match on Rod Laver Arena January 15. It will also grant $1 million for communities to rebuild tennis facilities. Kyrgios has also pledged $200 for each ace he serves across the Australian summer of tennis. Fellow Australian players Alex de Minaur, John Millman, and Samantha Stosur, among others, also vowed to donate money from their aces while the new ATP Cup got on board. The tournament announced that $100 would be donated to the Australian Red Cross for every ace served over the next 10 days, with the final figure expected to surpass $150,000. Much of Australia is up in flames and sports figures are here to help inspire seismic change across the globe for charitable donations.
In the wake of record low ratings for their annual New Year’s Day outdoor game, no progress is yet evident on discussions of NHL Olympic participation. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said that there is "really nothing new" on possible Olympic participation at the moment, but there will be "further discussion in the near future," according to The Athletic. Daly said, "I imagine it will be discussed further with the NHLPA in connection with any resumption of talks relating to a potential CBA extension. But, we and the NHLPA will also need to get a better understanding from the IIHF and/or IOC regarding the conditions on which NHL players would be invited to the Olympics. That remains a question as to which we do not have a lot of clarity at this point." NHLPA Executive Director Don Fehr said the players have "made it clear that they want to participate" in the Olympics. He said, "We want to find a way to do that." More discussions are expected before the end of the month, between the league, the NHLPA, and the IIHF.
U.S. men's national soccer team cancels Qatar training camp amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The USMNT is moving the team’s training camp out of Qatar back to the United States as a “precaution” given heightened tensions in the Middle East following the U.S. airstrike that killed Iranian General Qassem Suleimani last Thursday. According to the Los Angeles Times, the camp was scheduled to open Sunday in Doha, host city for the 2022 World Cup, but now will be staged in Bradenton, Florida. Though Doha is 950 miles from Baghdad -- the center of the current conflict -- “tensions in the region have escalated.” The Washington Post adds that U.S. outposts and personnel have “braced for retaliatory attacks.” The last thing the struggling USMNT needs at this point in time is to worry about a potentially life-threatening military conflict. USMNT officials did the right thing in moving the camp to Brandenton and out of harm’s way.
A lawsuit blaming Pop Warner for two fatalities is dismissed in federal court. According to the New York Times, a federal court judge has dismissed a lawsuit against Pop Warner, stating that the two women who sued the youth football organization had no proof that their sons’ deaths later in life were linked to any head trauma they had sustained over a decade earlier as youth football participants. The judge in the case, ruling for the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, said the mothers did not show sufficient links between any head trauma their sons may have suffered while playing Pop Warner football and their behavior later in life. The judge added that the plaintiffs had discounted other contributing factors, including the “social and biological.” The case, which was set to go to trial this month, was a benchmark for head-trauma related cases against sports organizations. Pop Warner, meanwhile, continues to refine and improve its football safety practices each year, with the constant input of renowned doctors as well as football experts, and remains the gold standard of youth football organizations nationwide.
The NBA G League secondary competition has announced the addition of Mexican professional men’s basketball team Capitanes next season, its first franchise based outside the U.S. and Canada. Established in 2016, the Mexico City outfit will become the NBA G League’s 29th team from the start of the 2020-2021 season, and will play their home games at the Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera, based in Mexico’s capital. The announcement was made during a press conference ahead of Dallas Mavericks 122-111 victory over the Detroit Pistons in Mexico City on December 12, the first of two regular-season games played in the Hispanic nation during the ongoing 2019-2020 season. NBA commissioner Adam Silver said: “Bringing an NBA G League team to Mexico City is a historic milestone for the NBA which demonstrates our commitment to basketball fans in Mexico and across Latin America. As the first G League franchise based outside of the US and Canada, we look forward to welcoming Capitanes to the NBA family.” The schedule for the 2020-2021 NBA G League season, which tips off next November, will be announced in August, 2020.
Sports teams using machine learning tech to drive sponsorship revenues. According to JohnWallStreet, the sports industry has begun to place a greater emphasis on data capture and analytics, particularly as it relates to on-field performance. But while sports has become big business, Adam Grossman, founder of Block Six Analytics (B6A), suggests “from an economic and financial perspective - in terms of understanding concepts like asset valuation, cash-flow and regression - it remains behind the times.” To help bring the industry up to speed, Grossman developed a sponsorship evaluation platform that values sports assets in the same manner “that venture capitalists, private equity firms and investment banks look at investment opportunities.” B6A's proprietary sponsorship model translates traditional fit and engagement benchmarks into probabilistic revenue growth metrics. Over the last 10 months, more than a dozen pro sports organizations have begun using Block Six technology to drive sponsorship revenues. Sports sponsorships sellers naturally seek brand partners that are demographically aligned. While most teams and media entities have managed to gather insights on their own, “the challenge has always been capturing the demographic data needed to ensure audience alignment, so that both parties can achieve their goals.”
Sony and Verizon are bringing 5G to sports broadcasting. According to Mobile Marketing Magazine, Sony and Verizon collaborated to demonstrate how 5G technology and streaming can be used in live sports broadcasting during the NFL’s Texans vs. New England Patriots game on December 1. A camera person from NBC Sports used Sony’s PXW-Z450 shoulder camcorder to capture the game and the video was sent through to a production room in the NRG Stadium in Houston with the help of Sony’s prototype transmitter box, Xperia 5G mm Wave device, and finally, Verizon’s 5G Ultra-Wideband network. The result was an almost real time broadcast sent to NBC producers without any hiccups. In the future, the same 5G-connected cameras could be used to transmit to remote production teams that aren’t located at the site of the sporting event. In the future, another advantage to 5G is the use of wireless connectivity, so cameras can use all angles and positions to capture the games.
David Stern passes away, but his legacy lives on through NBA Cares. David Stern was dedicated to public service, as is evidenced by NBA Cares, which he launched in 2005. Over its first five years, the program donated more than $100 million to charity. NBA Cares is the league’s global social responsibility program that builds on the NBA’s mission of addressing important social issues in the U.S. and around the world. Causes the platform supports include education, youth, and family development, and health, including Special Olympics, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, UNICEF, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Share Our Strength and GLSEN. NBA Cares programs and participants have provided more than five million hours of hands-on service, created more than 1,300 places where kids and families can live, learn or play, and engaged more than 51 million youth basketball programs in communities around the world. Internationally, NBA Cares has created more than 323 places where kids and families can live, learn, or play in 40 countries – largely thanks to Stern and his legacy.

A Main Line Brokerage Thrives for 40 Years by Going It Alone
Real Estate Biz
Every good real estate agent should know their community. By remaining independent, John Duffy says his real estate firm can go that one better: It's part of its community.
Sign up for our weekly home and property newsletter, featuring homes for sale, neighborhood happenings, and more.
John Duffy, founder and CEO of Duffy Real Estate, Inc. | Photos: Sandy Smith
The real estate industry these days is dominated by the large franchise operators who give individual agencies extra marketing muscle and the promise of greater reach.
That going-broad approach is one way to stay in business. But you can also do it by going deep as well. That deep familiarity with the communities where they operate keeps a number of brokerages here and elsewhere independent. Some, like Elfant Wissahickon in Northwest Philadelphia, dominate their territories the way the franchises dominate the larger environment.
Then there’s going real deep by becoming part of the community. That’s how John Duffy has managed to keep Duffy Real Estate in Narberth a going concern for 40 years now.
From Mom-and-Pop shop to 35-plus agents
Duffy started his firm in 1978 with just two people: himself and his wife. “My wife did the advertising then, and she still does the advertising now,” he says.
But now the firm consists of some 35 agents plus support staff operating out of two offices. And they all work together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and old-fashioned loyalty.
“It’s my agents that make my company,” he says. “As proud as I am of my company, I’m more proud of my agents. They’re dedicated, they’re educated, they’re concerned about their clients, and they’re loyal to me. And I’m loyal to them. I’m fortunate to have my family in the business. But I’m even more fortunate to have my adopted family.”
Duffy exaggerates only slightly by using that term. “The first agent I hired was a neighbor who’s friends with my mom,” he says, “and she was with me for 32 years. And I have an agent now who’s been with me for 35 years. It’s like a big family.”
“Real estate is a community business”
It’s only fitting, then, that the firm was founded and remains based in Narberth, the Main Line borough that’s known for its family-friendly environment and strong community spirit. Duffy says that staying independent enables him to remain a vital part of that community.
“The reason I haven’t sold out or merged is because I like the community aspect of [the business],” he continues. “We give back to the community. The community’s loyal to us and we’re loyal back to them as far as supporting the library and theater groups and sports teams.
“I think it’s important. Real estate is so much a community business and a neighborhood business that you want to make sure that you’re local. A lot of the agents for the larger firms started out with a smaller firm that was bought out by the larger companies. So they still have some neighborhood ties, but the company itself doesn’t give back the way their previous company did, nor the way we give it back. I’m not degrading other companies by any means, but they’re just too big to be involved.”
Duffy Real Estate’s main office on Haverford Avenue in downtown Narberth. The firm also has an office in St. Davids.
Technology expands horizons…
The real estate business operates much differently now than it did in 1978, Duffy notes. One of the biggest differences is the result of technological change that makes it possible for both agencies and their customers to expand their field of vision.
“We opened that second office [in St. Davids] 25 years ago,” he says. “You had to have a presence there starting out, because if you weren’t in town, you couldn’t get a listing” from a seller there, he says. “We incorporated so we could go beyond Narberth or Bryn Mawr. Now with the Internet and the multiple listing service, we can basically go anywhere in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”
…and gives buyers more power…
The Internet also makes it possible for buyers to drive the sales process more than they used to thanks to the search engines. In the old days, if you were looking for a house in some other community, your first stop would be to a local agent with access to the local multiple listing service.
“We used to have an MLS book every two weeks,” Duffy says. “And you were forbidden to give that out to anyone. That was our secret information. Then they gave it out to the Internet search engines.”
The move gave buyers more knowledge and thus more power in the search. But it hasn’t made agents unnecessary. In fact, Duffy says, the rise of the Internet has made cooperation between agents more important.
“If you have your home listed for sale,” he says, “the odds are an agent from another agency will be selling your house. Today, we’re marketing as much to other agents as we are to buyers.”
…but contracts quality of service
While that has made life better for the buyer, Duffy says that it’s also made things a little worse in that agents who represent buyers may not provide the level of service those buyers need. “They’re not as involved as they should be in monitoring what their buyers are looking for,” he says. “They should be doing more searching, and they certainly have more access to information than a potential buyer does.”
He also thinks that the rise of the large franchise operations means that the agents don’t get the guidance and backup they need either. “The larger these companies are, the less control they have” over the agents, he says. “The broker involvement is down, and the broker-owner involvement is very, very rare.
“I think it’s so important that if a buyer or a seller or one of my agents has a problem, they have the broker there” to help solve it, he says. And that’s another advantage to independence and local ownership: “If you have a real problem, you can go to the owner of our company. I don’t think Warren Buffett’s going to listen to your problem.”
His doubts about the benefits of search-driven transactions notwithstanding, Duffy has been no slouch in embracing new technology. Duffy Real Estate was an early adopter of virtual tours, and the company now offers clients the option of having virtual reality tours using 3-D helmets as well. In fact, he opines, “virtual tours are a thing of the past now.  For the buyers looking, [they were] too slow. Now they want everything right now. You load them up with 36 pictures and off they go.”
Sticklers for honest dealing
He also takes pride in the high standards his agents follow. “I get compliments all the time about my agents,” he says. “Many times, [other agents] will say, ‘I would rather do a transaction with one of your agents than somebody in my own office because I know that it’s going to be successful.”
Duffy’s children are waiting in the wings to carry on the family business, he says. “And they’re much more well-versed than I was when I was 30 years old.”
When Duffy started out in the business, there were many more well-known independent agencies than there are now. He rattled off some of the names that have been swallowed up by the giants: “Phil Fox sold out from Fox & Lazo. You had Charlie and Bob Roach, Emlen and Wheeler.”
Some advice for would-be independent brokers
Yet he didn’t think there was no room for someone with the right stuff to start their own independent brokerage even now. Here’s the advice he had for anyone considering taking that route: “Your reputation is first and foremost. We tell new agents coming in that it’s going to be a year and a half to two years before you can get up and running starting your own business. In most cases, they have to have at least three years’ experience so they will […] have a good reputation for honesty and ethical behavior.
“You will want to remain cooperative with the other offices and agents. You don’t want to get a reputation as somebody hiding or pocketing their listings or not treating the other agents fairly.
“All you have in this business is your name. And it’s important that you build that name all the way up.”

Unlimited Advantages of Unlimited Music Downloads
Although the first music video ever broadcasted was 'Video Killed the Radio Star' played by MTV in 1981, some contemplate the music video to be much older than that year. Plainly the film Alexander Nevsky, directed by Sergei Eisenstein in 1938 had some extended pictures of battles which had been choreographed by Sergei Prokofiev. These new scenes were so progressive that they've these days been considered to be the first music video.
Apparently, the music video is even a lot older than these innovative scenes. The 1911 Alexander Scriabin's symphony - Prometheus: Poem of Fireplace was written for orchestra and 'light organ'. Oskar Fischinger's animated motion pictures were thought of to be other ancestors of the music video as they had been known as 'visible music' and so they had been equipped with orchestral scores.
Max Fleischer's brief cartoons had been additionally thought-about to be makes an attempt of a music video. He created a brand new type of cartoons, the sing-alongside cartoons which he known as Screen Songs. These quick cartoons had been inviting the general public to sing alongside to famous songs at that time. Few years later, within the Thirties, these cartoons had been modified; they displayed the musicians singing their hit songs in entrance of the camera in a dwell-action show.
Walt Disney additionally contributed to the music video evolution via his 'Foolish Symphonies' which had been based on musical pieces. The Warner Brothers cartoons were additionally created around songs. However the preferred videos had been the live music live shows, performing well-liked singers, movies which were displayed in theatres.
Bessie Smith's dramatized performance of a track was another try to make a music video. This efficiency consisted in a short movie named Saint Louis Blues. It was very talked-about and it had been performed in theatres for more than 3 years. She wasn't the only musician that appeared in short musical supplies. Many musicians favored the thought and began capturing their own materials. Music historian Donald Clarke considers that Louis Jordan's strange feature film Lookout is the official ancestor of the music video.
I receive several e-mails every week from people asking me the best way to break into the enterprise of music video remedy writing. As I have written over four hundred treatments for numerous document labels, artists and administrators, I've some perception into this area. There are several parts to consider when writing a music video therapy and I will try to define them here.
Earlier than you try to jot down a single word, it helps to understand slightly bit concerning the "biz." The music video trade has undergone main changes lately. Many report labels have gone out of business or consolidated. There are far fewer "large funds" videos being produced, but with broadband Web access, there are way more avenues of distribution.
There are three main gamers: The Report Labels, The Manufacturing Corporations and The Directors. The report labels signify the recording artists. The Manufacturing Companies symbolize administrators. There are additionally directors who should not affiliated with any explicit manufacturing company. They often solicit work on their very own, or rent an independent representative to work for them.
When a record label wants to make a music video for one of its artists, it approaches a number of manufacturing firms and directors who they suppose could be applicable and solicit bids. They'll say, for instance, "We would like a music video for Britney Spear's upcoming single, 'I Want I Had Talent,' and we've got a budget of 750,000 dollars.
The manufacturing company will scramble to assemble a bid, consisting of a remedy and a price range, which they may then rush to the label as shortly as potential. Usually, it's assumed that the proposed director will write the treatment himself or herself, but that is usually not the case. Loads of directors, together with a number of the most noted within the enterprise, do not like writing treatments. Usually it's because they're requested to bid on so many video jobs that the amount of writing - on spec - will get to be overwhelming.
Sometimes it's because they don't have a very good strong idea. Most frequently it is as a result of they don't seem to be good writers. They may be masters of visualization, they might know how one can place a camera and work with the expertise to get a dynamite efficiency, however this does not necessarily mean they know methods to translate their ideas to the written word.
Tumblr media
In other instances, the director could also be extremely proficient with the written word, but nonetheless need to collaborate with an out of doors author to give you the most effective treatment possible. So they'll rent, usually via the auspices of the production firm that represents them, somebody to write the remedy. This could possibly be anyone from the secretary on the production office, to the producer of the video. Usually, nevertheless, it's a freelance writer.
There are three most important elements to consider when writing a music video treatment: SELLING, CONTENT MATERIAL and PRICE RANGE. The one which beginning writers seem most involved with is the content material; that's, all the visual points that will probably be photographed and (hopefully) translated to the screen. Be suggested, the opposite two components are equally important. If one does not take PROMOTING and FUNDS into consideration, the content shall be woefully irrelevant.
PROMOTING
Tumblr media
For the reason that treatment is written as a part of the preliminary bid to convince the file label to award the job to the manufacturing company and/or its director, it have to be an effective SELLING TOOL. In addition to the nice content and visuals you will include within the therapy, you have to be cognizant of what it is the label and the artist are searching for, and - for lack of a better word - regurgitate it back to them. The artists are involved with how they will be offered. The label is concerned with promoting albums. So in the text you have to convince both that these wants will probably be met.
In case you are writing for a rap artist who has talked about that he wants to drive a current model Lincoln Navigator, just be sure you consult with this precise car in the textual content of the treatment. No matter whether you think it's a terrible idea, or whether or not or not the car makes it into the completed video, your fundamental concern at this point is to get the job. Do not be obstinate. If the label says they wish to steer clear of utilizing a whole lot of extras, do not set your video at a concert with a whole bunch of screaming fans.
Get it? Give them what they need, keeping it inside the context of the opposite two parts: Content and Budget.
CONTENT
Treatments are usually written within the present tense, with the author describing all the visuals that will be within the proposed music video and tying them into the varied verses of the track.
Being as descriptive as attainable is crucial. Typically chances are you'll think you've gotten the good imagery for the video, but if the reader doesn't understand what concepts and images you're conveying, or does not get the same psychological pictures as the writer, it'll all be lost. Find the appropriate adjective. Usually, writers do not need to be redundant, but in a music video, it is sometimes important to "hit the reader over the head." Think about your viewers will likely be composed of everybody from a Nobel laureate to a second grader with a learning disability. Is the efficiency set inside a "blue room"? Or is it a COBALT BLUE ROOM, with a low fog that permeates each nook. Description, description, description.
Performance vs. "B Roll". Once you see the artist taking part in an instrument and/or singing to the monitor, that is called "EFFICIENCY." Every part else that takes place within the video is known as "B-ROLL.
Tumblr media
Usually, you need to describe three or 4 efficiency set-ups, that can be intertwined together with your B-Roll visuals. Describe how the artist will come across in his or her performance. Robust? Highly effective? Seductive? Flirtatious? Horny? It helps to know a little about how the artists understand themselves. You'll be able to usually discover this out by visiting their official web sites and reading their bios.
B-Roll could possibly be narrative or interpretative. That is, it could tell a linear story, with a beginning, center and end, or it might just be imagery that you simply feel works properly inside the context of the song.
As with every type of writing, the more you do it, the higher you will get. Preserve writing music movies, whether or not you might be getting paid for it or not. Watch MTV. Examine your favourite videos after which write what you think about the treatment should have seemed like. Study other remedies which have been written, and then come up with your personal model. While there aren't any onerous and quick rules about format, it is important that a remedy communicate its ideas in a clear, concise and inventive method.
FUNDS
Normally, the author could have an idea of the finances vary the label or artist wishes to spend. A therapy written for a 5-hundred thousand greenback video will look very different from one for a five thousand dollar video. When you've got any production expertise, this will be a little simpler to determine, but in case you are strictly a author, then you need to use your common sense. Major effects are costly, whether they are "mechanical" effects that you'll carry out on the set (such as a automotive crash or explosions), or digital results that you'll add later in the post production course of.
In the half-million greenback video, it is perfectly okay to incorporate a couple of of those effects in your treatment. In a funds of under fifty-thousand, it's best to keep away from them. Smaller effects that may be created using lighting and smoke, etc., are relatively cheap and might be achieved on even essentially the most modest of budgets.
The decrease the funds, the less the extras, locations and effects it is best to incorporate into the therapy.
GETTING YOUR FIRST JOB
Now that you've a primary understanding of the method of writing music video therapies, you might be probably questioning where to start. How do you get your first job? First ought to have two or three samples of your work. Discover just a few new songs that you simply really like and write your individual treatments for them. Since you aren't under a deadline, you should take your time to make these samples sparkle.
Subsequent, contact every production company and director yow will discover and let them know you are available as a remedy author. You can locate them by performing some basic analysis on the Web, however a great place to start is the Music Video Manufacturing Affiliation . The MVPA has lists accessible on its website of its member producers, administrators and production corporations.
Tumblr media
ABSTRACT
Upon getting turned in your therapy to the production company and/or director, and they have despatched it off to the record label, you may sit back and cross your fingers. Normally you will hear in a short time whether or not the music video has been awarded to your crew. Don't be discouraged in the event that they go with any person else. There are so many factors involved when a report label decides to whom they will award the job, lots of them political and totally out of your control. Within the occasion that the record label likes the therapy however has some points with it, you should be prepared to do a couple of rewrites.
As the popularity of shiny rap, r&b and reggae music movies soar, city music followers are choosing to obtain music videos slightly than phoning or texting music television channels to request their favourite videos. City Music fans have been lengthy-awaiting an alternative to UK music tv channels reminiscent of MTV Base, The Field and Kiss TELEVISION, resembling access to Music Videos free music video viewing of the videos of their selection, in addition to music video downloads. At £1 minimum per video request, music followers are fast diverting away from music television and as an alternative watching music videos totally free on-line and downloading them to observe on their iPod's, mp4 players, BlackBerries and different mp4-compatible telephones.
On this information age we're residing in, folks want information quick and for it to be easily accessible. Music fans need to hear good music free of charge, and if they like what they hear from an artist, they're going to need to visit that artist's official website and MySpace web page, as well as their Amazon and iTunes stores. Having all of this data listed with each music video will make music accessibility simpler for the viewer, as well as bridging the gap between the fan and the artist. With simply-accessible music movies in your pocket, your iPod, cellphone or mp4 participant will certainly breathe a new lease of life into those lengthy bus, train and aircraft journeys!

TIFF Hangover - 2018 Edition
Are you caught up on your sleep? (I’m not)
Do you have groceries in your fridge again? (Some...)
Have you gotten “We are the Champions” out of your head finally? (No)
Like every TIFF, the 2018 version was non-stop films, friends, fast food, and some celebrities in between. Here are some of thoughts/things/random stories from my 20th festival...
1. Fav films
It feels like I saw a lot of more mainstream fare this year, but then there might be an argument that TIFF programming is definitely more mainstream fare in recent years.
My favourites were:
Widows (directed by Steve McQueen, co-written by Gillian Flynn)
Hotel Mumbai (directed by Anthony Maras).
Titles with less buzz that I really enjoyed:
The Other Story (dir. Avi Nesher)
El Angel (dir. Luis Ortega)
2. Discussion-worthy misses
The redeeming factor of seeing films that you don’t particularly enjoy are when they are still discussion-worthy. A film doesn’t have to be to your liking for it to be thought-provoking and memorable. At a festival, you also have an opportunity to learn more about a film during its Q&A.
Vita & Virginia was an ambitious project, directed by and starting some powerhouse female talent. I found it went on a little long and made Vita Sackville-West look like an insipid socialite (I don’t actually know much about her as a person, so there is a chance that’s exactly what she was...). That said, this was one of my favourite Q&A’s in which they discussed unconventional relationships and being true to oneself.
Angelo was more of a theatrical presentation, scenes in the life of a Moor in the Viennese court.  Fascinating tale but it suffered greatly under the film’s narrative methods.
3. Some Stats:
Films Watched: 31
Most films watched in a day: 5
Foreign language titles: 11
Asian films (support the Asians!): 3
Red Bulls consumed: 6
For a complete list of all the films I saw during TIFF18, please check out my Letterboxed. I hope to update with some notes on each film in the upcoming weeks.
4. Fangirl-ing
Over the years I have seen many a celeb, some of the biggest in the biz.  While volunteering we are not allowed to ask them for photos, autographs etc. On our own time, we can do as we please. That said, I’m not usually much of a celeb stalker, if I happen to turn a corner (or open a door - for Morgan Freeman!) and they’re there, awesome.  Otherwise I’m good with photos of them on stage, and if anything, tend to chase down directors and writers more often than I do actors.
That said, the two men in Hollywood that I love most were both at TIFF this year - Bradley Cooper and Alexander Skarsgard. I didn’t plan my day around their red carpet appearances, but it just so happened that Alexander showed up to the Q&A of The Hummingbird Project screening that I was at. I wasn’t going to pass up the chance knock a bunch of people out of the way to go after him to ask him to marry me. Kidding. Sort of. I pushed my friend Jerry out of the way, chased him down a theatre hallway, and asked for his autograph. If you ever wondered, he is even more perfect up close.
Hours later the same day, I was crossing the downtown core and passing the backstage door of the Elgin. That’s my theatre so I knew A Star is Born was screening inside. From across the street I could see Cameron Bailey leaving (a sign that the intros were done), so I decided to wait.  Lo and behold, the cars started moving into place for their pick-ups and I got to see Bradley Cooper as he excited the building (Lady Gaga too, but whatever...)
5.  Old Friends
A lot of my friends in everyday life I met at TIFF.  The handful that I see and talk to most often I’ve probably known for about 6 to 8 years. Even more that were part of a close knit group from 10-13 years ago.
On day 10 this year I was grabbing some dinner when I heard my name. I looked up to find Mark, former Head Rep of the Elgin. We talked, we laughed, we reminisced, and it didn’t even occur to me that he actually left the Elgin ten years ago! Pardon the name-dropping, but if you’ve known me long enough to follow... in my head the original “Head Rep of the Elgin” was Hunter, then Mark, then David’s long and illustrious dynasty. It never occurs to me that most people don’t remember a time before David.
On day 11 I had already seen the People Choice Award winner and went to the documentary Walking on Water instead. It was there that I ran into my friend Christina Wong, whom I met in my first year volunteering at the Elgin in 1999. In 2004 we took a trip to Brighton, England together, still one of my favourite travel memories.
And of course there’s Christopher and Irene, the former being one of my oldest friends period. We met in 5th grade long before either of us knew what a film festival was. On a hazy day in the middle of the festival he invited me to a party for his Scotia compatriots, and it was a small miracle that I remembered to turn up at it 5 days later. It’s always a nice bonus to be able to squeeze these get togethers in.
6.  TIFF Partners-In-Crime
While it’s entirely possible to have a great festival by yourself, I find it beneficial to team up with friends. Not because I plan to talk through the movie, or even need a dinner companion between films. Sometimes it’s just easier to have someone holding your spot in line, or one person can grab multiple tickets while they’re at the box office.
I find it especially helpful at the overnight ticket line, where Brenda and I have been teaming up for years. This year I did some shared duties with Tanya and Steven as well, and even our non-volunteer counterparts (the initial line up is combined with regular members and volunteers who are members) Pavo and Jason are now so well acquainted that we consider them part of the gang.
I have a gmail calendar that details my TIFF comings and goings, which I give shared access to about half a dozen friends, and it’s not TIFF every year until Jerry N messages me to say that he’s accidentally combined my calendar and his on his phone.
For the actual festival this year, I don’t think I ever went more than 2 hours (or just slightly more than the length of a film) without messaging Jerry F. He knew where I was at all times for the 11 days (kinda creepy right?) , but my finest stalking moment came when Jerry mentioned where he was going to grab dinner. I was traveling from film to film, turned a corner, and noticed the restaurant he mentioned right in front of me. I went inside, sat down across from him, and started verbally responding to his text message.
Lastly we put technology to good use with our Elgin and Winter Garden Captains WhatsApp group chat, from sharing food coupons, to FYIs, to the location of the bottled water (after a three day drought... sorry guys), it was great to be in touch with the theater’s going-ons even when I wasn’t there physically. I quite adore our little captains’ team.
7. Best Celebrity Moments on Stage
You never know what’s gonna happen at TIFF. It’s fun to see celebs on stage, off script (or on - as was the case this year!), acting a touch more like themselves.
One of the most common things you encounter in a film Q&A is a long meandering jumble of words that you hope will lead to but never does turn into a question. Kudos to Jason Sudekis who called this out when he pretended to start sitting down on stage during a ramble in the Driven Q&A.  You are all of us Jason!
Kiera Knightley makes a well-timed quip when they discuss kissing Dominic West in a fat suit and fake facial hair.  She remarked that it was like “kissing a walrus”
Best of all was Bel Powley at The Breakfast Club Live Read (my first time being able to attend the live read!) where she recreated Alison’s famous sandwich.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While it’s often felt like a blur, we packed a lot films, experiences and good memories into 11 days. I have endless love for my TIFF family, film friends, fellow captains, and volunteers.  Soon as I catch up on my sleep, can’t wait to do it all again next year!
(Bonus for friends: if you are friends with me on facebook, my TIFF 18 album is now uploaded and my updates throughout the festival can be viewed on my timeline)

Finance
In a chilling but sadly all-too-familiar sequence of events, UK banks have been targeting cryptocurrency owners. Individuals who have cashed out large amounts of cryptocurrency – legitimately – have had their assets frozen and accounts locked without warning, fueled by fears of money laundering and a general distrust of bitcoin. One victim even claims to have had their house raided and computer equipment seized in a follow-up operation by UK police.

While some jurisdictions have belatedly welcomed cryptocurrency with open arms – think Gibraltar, Malta, and Liechtenstein, where Binance has just opened a fiat-crypto exchange – the majority have taken an antagonistic stance. The UK is a prime example; unless you’re a bigshot like Coinbase, which recently secured a deal with Barclays, don’t count on retaining access to a bank account if you dabble in crypto. On P2P site Localbitcoins.com, UK traders exchange large amounts of BTC every day, requesting, in most instances, that the bank pay-in reference is something benign and unrelated to crypto. To do otherwise is to play a dangerous game.
This week, one British cryptocurrency figure discovered, to his peril, the speed and severity of the crackdown that’s initiated once a UK bank deems an individual to be persona non grata. The man, who we’ll refer to as John, has been involved in cryptocurrency for many years, actively mining it, occasionally trading it, and operating as a senior figure in the project team for a top 100 cryptocurrency. He has no criminal convictions, and has always accorded to UK laws concerning financial regulations and taxation. He told news.Bitcoin.com:
I had my bank account frozen and my funds taken hostage by Clydesdale Bank without any warning or explanation…I was eventually told by the branch manager that it no longer wanted to do business with “these type of people” [i.e cryptocurrency users]
Locked Out Without Warning
Clydesdale Bank cares a lot if you own cryptocurrency
John explains: “I tried to log in to my Clydesdale Bank current account (the one that I’ve had since childhood) late on Tuesday evening only to be presented with a message saying “Sorry, we’re no longer able to assist you online”. I then tried the app which said “Your account is locked, please call”. I called the help center only to be told that the guy on the other end of the phone also couldn’t access my account nor confirm whether or not my (six-figure GBP) balance was safe. I was told that he was completely unable to help and that I would need to call HQ in the morning.”
He continues: “I called HQ this morning and was put on hold for 20 minutes. When the guy came back, he told me that there was a letter in the post to me and that he couldn’t say anything more about what was happening or whether or not my balance was safe. So I requested to be put through to the most senior person available, who then told me that my account had been locked down but he was unable to tell me why, nor who put the lock on my account. He refused to even tell me which department placed the block. He told me that my only option was to go into my local branch and request a manual withdrawal of funds. However he explained that such a withdrawal would need to be approved by the bank and therefore I wasn’t guaranteed to get access to my cash.”
“My local countryside branch were as clueless as you’d expect. I sat watching the assistant phone head office to try to get to the bottom of WTF was happening. HQ refused to tell her while I was present so they instead went cloak and dagger by sending an email which she had to leave the room to go and check out. After another 20 minutes and a couple of phone calls that I could hear her make from the room next door, she finally reappeared with another guy who turned out to be the branch manager.”
“These Types of People”
John explains: “The branch manager sat down and explained that the bank had reviewed the transactions coming in and out of my account and decided that it no longer wanted to do business with “these type of people”. I immediately requested full withdrawal of my not insignificant balance to which he replied that he would need to seek approval for that to happen.”
John’s experience is by no means an isolated case. In Britain, as in many other countries, cryptocurrency users are having something they’ve always known reaffirmed: you can’t trust banks with your money. Previous character, credit rating, and occupation are all worthless should a legacy financial institution take a disapproving view of your involvement in cryptocurrency. A few days prior to John being locked out by a bank he’d been with for over 20 years, another British citizen was enduring an even more harrowing encounter.
“Got raided yesterday at 6:30am for cashing out 500,000 in Bitcoin back in December 2017, arrested for money laundering and possession of criminal property in the UK,” he told fellow members of the /biz/ messageboard. When pressed for details he elaborated:
My Bitcoins that were cashed out were legit bought back in 2012/13 and they have seized some of my crypto too, seized my PC, all my USB and hard drives and raided my whole house and took me to the police station, got given a solicitor and interviewed, they asked where I found out about Bitcoin and said 4chan and a poker site.
Raided by the Police for Cashing Out
The anonymous /biz/ poster continued: “I was released [from police custody] same day at like 4pm, solicitor said shit went well and was released not on bail but was “under investigation” i.e we have fuck all on you but lol we’re holding your shit anyway. they searched my house and I believe they thought I was a drug dealer and were kind of disappointed they didn’t find anything like that so I am guessing they jumped to conclusions, it’s my bank who started this shit by freezing it.”
News.Bitcoin.com cannot verify this story, but the level of detail supplied, accompanied by a picture purportedly showing the search warrant the police presented, suggests that it is authentic. The man’s problems began when he tried to cash out from crypto, which caused Natwest bank to freeze his account. John, on the other hand, explained to news.Bitcoin.com that he had recently sold various material assets to fund a new business venture that required access to fiat. In other words, John hadn’t suddenly cashed out a large sum of cryptocurrency that might have triggered the incident. The mere possession of a reasonable sum of fiat currency, coupled with a history for selling smaller amounts of crypto, was enough.
The warrant allegedly used to search the UK man’s house and seize his computer equipment
The /biz/ poster claims to have cashed out a significant amount of bitcoin in late 2017 partly to pay taxes, which he duly did with £110,00 of the money. This didn’t prevent him from falling under suspicion however. He asserts that the police “literally kidnapped me and stole my money on the basis of “we don’t know if you’ve committed a crime to obtain this money but lol we’re seizing your assets and raided your house.””
Funds Are Safu
John’s incident ended better than he at one point expected, with Clydesdale Bank eventually transferring his money to a new bank the man had hastily joined. He concludes: “I now have all of my funds in another account which I won’t name to prevent a repeat of this ridiculous discrimination. Being treated like a criminal (without proof nor cause) by an organisation that I’ve been loyal to for over 20 years has seriously pissed me off.”
The /biz/ messageboard user explains how the police raid went down
There may come a day when cryptocurrency users are treated with dignity and respect by legacy financial institutions. By the time that day arrives, however, the crypto economy may have evolved to the stage where bitcoiners may no longer need the banks that shunned them.
Do you think banks unfairly target cryptocurrency users, or are they simply doing their job? Let us know in the comments section below.

In the winter of 2011, Al Pacino stood at a podium inside the Beverly Hilton to accept a Golden Globe Award. All eyes were on Pacino moments after he was announced Outstanding Lead Actor for his portrayal of Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the contentious right-to- die pathologist who inspired “You Don’t Know Jack,” a polarizing film directed by Academy Award-winner Barry Levinson, with a glitzy A-List cast starring the likes of Pacino, Susan Sarandon and John Goodman. You’re probably wondering what any of this has to do with bodybuilding … after all, this is Muscular Development, right? Well, stay with me a little longer and I’ll connect the dots. The film was produced by Steve Lee Jones, one of Hollywood’s most ambitious producers, regarded in those circles for his cunning ability to identify larger-than-life true stories for which movies should be made. Upon his arrival in Hollywood, Jones secured the rights to Kevorkian’s life story, a complex, multi-layered memoir, one that would provide a blueprint for a film worthy of Hollywood royalty, like Pacino. Fast-forward to a call I received one evening this past March. The voice on the other end was Jones, the aforementioned producer, currently knee-deep in his project “DeLorean,” the story of the legendary auto industry maverick. The call came just a few days after Joe Weider was laid to rest. If you’re a reader of this magazine, you’re well aware of Joe’s transformational influence on physical culture, the sheer gravity of the industry he built, and the millions he inspired. But for many, outside of the bodybuilding world, the story of Joe and Ben Weider is a bit less familiar— a reality that often appeals to a brand of Hollywood execs who hunger for undiscovered gems, the kind that win awards. I had met Jones 15 years earlier while working in the television business. Since those days, I’ve kept tabs on his rise in Hollywood while he kept a watchful eye on my work in the bodybuilding biz. We’ve often joked, over the years, that our two worlds, despite their obvious differences, are both occupied by individuals who share an insatiable appetite for the spotlight, while cleverly putting a positive spin on narcissism, an art form of sorts. Jones was calling because he wanted me to tell him everything I know about Joe Weider. He asked a lot of questions, but these weren’t your typical “How did Joe discover Arnold?” questions. He wanted to explore the earliest stages of Joe’s life, his childhood, his struggles with anti-Semitism, and the risks that were taken by a pair of young men who sought to change the way the world viewed muscle. It was obvious that Jones had done his homework and, true to his reputation, he had already begun peeling away the layers of a story that would begin in poverty, in the depths of the Great Depression. It was only a few minutes into the conversation when I reminded myself that I was speaking with someone who had the vision, and the power, to bring this story to life, to tell it in a way that no bodybuilding story had ever been told. There have been smaller-scale efforts, most recently an ambitious documentary called “Generation Iron,” but never before has there been a major theatrical feature film that places bodybuilding front and center for the world to see. The story of Joe and Ben Weider had landed on Hollywood’s radar, and after speaking with the man who helped garner a Golden Globe for Pacino, I was prepared to do everything in my power to make sure this project advanced beyond our initial conversation. Eric Weider’s Keys to the Kingdom  In the movie business, a film based on a real-life individual is termed a biopic, and when telling the story of someone no longer living, the crucial first step is to secure the “life rights” from the estate of the deceased. This critical step provides unfettered access to the most personal and private details, the kind of minutiae that can provide an audience with a view of the subject unlike any they’ve seen before. In this case, the subjects are Joe and Ben Weider, and the man who holds the keys to the kingdom is Eric Weider— Ben’s son, Joe’s nephew and the head of the billion-dollar family empire. My first task was to coordinate a meeting between Eric and our producer, an assignment that would require a delicate pitch to a man who cares deeply about the legacy of his late father and uncle. I called Eric and informed him that Hollywood had come calling. I spoke glowingly of the opportunity and the authenticity of the producer. Once Eric realized that I wouldn’t let him off the phone until he gave me the answer I was looking for, he cautiously agreed to a meeting. “When I first heard from Steve Lee Jones I was a little skeptical,” explains Eric Weider. “I quickly learned, though, that Steve was the real deal, not just a dreamer. He is someone with a big vision and the know-how along with the track record to get this done. The more time I spend with him, the more impressed I am.” After a series of meetings, Jones’ Hollywood-based company, Bee Holder Productions, announced it had secured exclusive rights to the Joe and Ben Weider life story, and book rights to Brothers of Iron from the parent company, Weider Health and Fitness. Enter Brad Furman With the ink dry on a landmark “exclusive rights” deal, it was time to select a writer/director. Jones is committed to telling this story from its earliest, most meaningful stages. He shares, “The working title is ‘BIGGER’ and the story will focus on the young brothers confronting rampant anti-Semitic sentiment as they try to launch a business and a movement. Joe was the visionary who wanted to encourage others to build their bodies and self-esteem, while Ben brought the business savvy to make the dream a reality.” When word of the project began circulating through Hollywood’s inner circles, there was no shortage of writers and directors interested in developing the script, but Jones understood that this story required an “A-List” writer/director in order to attract an “A-List” cast. Enter Brad Furman, director of “The Lincoln Lawyer” (2011) a film that starred Matthew McConaughey and grossed nearly $100 million at the box office. More recently he directed “Runner Runner” (2013) with Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck. “I knew Brad was a college athlete who experienced pretty extreme prejudice growing up in Philly,” explains Jones. “I was also told that he was looking for his next project to have deep meaning. So I called a meeting and we had instant synergy. I knew he was our guy. His passion for the story was quite obvious.” When asked what drew him to the project, Furman reasoned, “These men’s stories, what they created, it’s exciting. This is a great opportunity to shed light on remarkable men who pulled themselves up from nothing to greatness.” How REAL is all of this? In Hollywood, new projects are born every day. During their embryonic stages of development, many have been known to die an early death. So if you’re concerned about the viability of this film, I’ll provide some comfort. Our Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated producer has projected a $30 million production budget, and our writer, known mostly as an A-List director, is in the final stages of a script as jaw-dropping as the physiques Joe made famous. Some of the biggest names in Hollywood are on the short list to play the coveted lead roles, and Jones hopes to begin shooting later this year. Additionally, Eric Weider has signed on as executive producer, joining a Bee Holder Production team that also includes Drew Gallagher (co-producer), Dan Fugardi (associate producer) and Camila Castro (creative executive). I will serve the project as co-executive producer, along with a host of consultants including Mike Steere (co-author of Brothers of Iron), Jimmy Caruso, Leroy Colbert and Andre Begin, a former Mr. Canada who was taken in and off the streets by the Weider family. When I asked Furman about the enormous burden of telling the story of a pair of men who inspired millions, he surmised, “Eric Weider handed me the bronze statue of his Uncle Joe with his massive arms folded across his chest, and I stared at it, at the strength and determination in Joe’s body, and in his eyes. And in them I saw the ‘come-from-nowhere-and-go-to-somewhere’ lonely kid who built himself a life— the world of bodybuilding— because if he didn’t do that, as he said, he’d have had no world to live in. That story appeals to me and my own journey, and to anyone who has a dream.” Muscular Development is proud that our senior features editor, Dan Solomon, is co-executive producer of this historic film project. MD and FitnessRx for Men will continue to provide behind-the-scenes coverage of bodybuilding’s arrival in Hollywood, from production all the way to the red carpet!

Ny Times, Gizmodo Editors Talk News Hints Beneath Trump
Those are welcome words these days to Information companies across the brand new media landscape. The political weather, fueled by means of the unorthodox tenor of the Trump administration, has thrust open the door for a brand new era of News tipsters.
                                         Beneath Trump
Cnet Blogs
President Trump’s condemnation of the mainstream media and smudging the road between what’s real and what’s no longer has despatched the journalistic popularity quo into a tumult. In reaction, residents no longer historically part of the editorial method have felt encouraged to get worried and keep the authorities accountable.
In advance this month, the founding father of Craigslist, Craig Newmark, donated $1 million to ProPublica — which notoriously performs deep investigative accountability journalism — at the same time as The New york Instances has seen a extensive bump in subscribers, because the thirst for truth (and at Times, gossip) surrounding Washington proves endless.
News businesses have pounced on this newfound interest in inclusion with the process, and as an end result, have extended their calls for Hints and leaks with heightened urgency. The homepages of courses which include The Washington Submit and diverse Gizmodo Media properties had been splashed with sprawling banners or even whole pages containing commands on the way to securely and anonymously drop Suggestions to reporters. It’s an exercise that, traditionally, has been essential to News collecting — from Watergate to the Countrywide Protection Corporation scandal.
For John Cook, government editor of Gizmodo Media’s unique projects table, which runs the newly launched “Tell on Trump” Recommendations program, the upward push in a call for facts is palpable.
“There’s a little bit more urgency to ensure that the people in the agencies and the bureaucracies who have some thing to mention have a manner to discover you and feature an area in which they can send newsworthy records,” Prepare dinner stated, noting that his outfit, formerly known as Gawker Media, has always depended on Suggestions and its target market particularly to funnel through information.
Prepare dinner released the unique projects table in January, concurrent with the swearing-in of the president. At the start, Cook and his group used targeted commercials on Fb to get the eye of employees of federal corporations especially, so that individuals who labored in or across the White House could communicate intel about the conduct of the incoming administration. Gizmodo Media also put up physical classified ads in Washington, D.C., bus shelters, in search of Information Suggestions.
Prepare dinner stated he believes the Net has fostered a culture of sharing and created a place wherein human beings feel they could effortlessly and thoroughly talk. The web rewards users for dispensing information — potentially getting rid of any friction that could have existed in the exchange in years beyond.
“We’re in surroundings where people see, for better or for worse, the effect that records could have on Information cycles and political occasions,” Prepare dinner said. “There are naturally going to be more opportunities for people who see newsworthy changes occurring to speak the ones to newshounds who are interested in informing the general public approximately what their authorities are doing.”
In line with the Times’ deputy investigations editor Gabriel Dance, who changed into at the crew that broke the NSA story related to notorious tipster Edward Snowden, the reason behind expanded requests for News Tips from normal citizens isn’t so reduce-and-dry.
“I suppose the public’s in reality in all likelihood a touch bit harassed on what to think about all of it,” he stated. “You have got a President who’s actively railing in opposition to leaks, pronouncing they result in fake Information. At the same time, You have numerous News agency breaking huge testimonies based totally in entire or, at least in part, on Guidelines coming thru.”
Essay Editor
Dance released the Instances’ Hints line with the director of newsroom Protection Runa Sandvik on Dec. 15. The timing was merely a coincidence, stated Dance, who noted that the Times previously didn’t have an active name out for Suggestions that made it easy for people to leave statistics. Previous to this system that exists At the Instances nowadays, Dance stated the way to leave hints was complex, each at the tipsters ceases in addition to for the receiver.
“I wanted approaches for human beings to attain us that had a lower barrier to access,” he stated. “One of the novel things that the Instances did become used Sign and WhatsApp, encrypted, mobile applications which might be very just like text messages.”
It seems the Trump management isn’t the handiest motivation nudging human beings to surrender data. Dance said he thinks that in a way, parents sense advocated via having a direct line of verbal exchange to a place like the Times. The increased channels via which human beings can get in touch with a Countrywide newspaper gives them a push to go away Tips and gives a degree of comfort. That is a sign of the general public’s dating with the clicking today, encouraged by way of a polarizing presidency and the myriad structures where Those issues can be brazen — and but securely — mentioned.
Trump’s Biz Suggestions
Donald Trump spoke in Toronto more than one years ago and provided us a side no longer usually visible on “The Apprentice”. I have constantly well-known his accomplishments and tenacity – and revered his enterprise acumen. After hearing Trump communicate, but, I realized that I additionally certainly like him. He becomes humorous, irreverent (possibly a quality high-quality preferred through entrepreneurs) and down-to-earth. He wasn’t afraid to inform it like it’s far – and did not fear approximately the “political correctness” that hamstrings too much of our communique and writings nowadays. The audience, in reality, loved this fresh approach. So, even though his talk turned into a little even as back, it nevertheless makes the experience to read this text, because his factors nonetheless make the experience.
When “The Donald” changed into here, he did ways extra than entertain (and entertain he did!), but; he had a few wonderful commercial enterprise advice to impart. He said that the instructions for achievement haven’t changed a great deal over the centuries, and will probably be the equal centuries down the road (so long as we don’t blow up our international, that is – his phrase). His Recommendations:
1) You have to LOVE what you are doing, or you’ll never achieve success. When you love what you are doing, you will paintings more difficult and attempt tougher and be higher at it. When you love what you’re doing, you’ll find it smooth to get up in the morning and begin paintings – in reality, you won’t even don’t forget it paintings, and that is honestly critical.
2) You need to recognize your commercial enterprise internal and out. Trump become once requested, “What is the difference between a ‘braggart’ or ‘blowhard’ and someone who gets it accomplished? His solution: “They, winners that are, convey the goods.” He has observed that everyone too often, a person who looks as if they’ve got the whole package deal, ends up no longer to have too much going on upstairs. You need to get into the enterprise with folks that are not handiest smart, but also are nicely-knowledgeable about their industry, will listen to the right recommendation – and realize While to invite for help. Beneath this heading comes a further piece of recommendation: don’t take long holidays out of your enterprise without checking in. How can you assume to be a terrific leader if you don’t know what’s taking place?!
3) by no means ever end or surrender! Julius Cesar, Winston Churchill and Donald Trump – all very extraordinary styles of leaders, all with the equal message.
4) You want luck. You will no longer usually assume an enterprise leader to speak abut something that many people experience is not within their manager. Trump, but, reminds us of the phrase that has been ascribed to many, together with golfer Gary Player, who reportedly said, “The harder I paintings, the luckier I am getting.”
One Friday, On the point Whilst Donald Trump, owed vast sums ($nine.2 billion in general) to just about each bank around, he had to attend a bankers’ dinner. now not trying to stand such a lot of those who had him of their attractions, he sought safe haven within the sanctuary of his living room. but Donald is not a quitter, so he were given himself up off the couch, donned a tuxedo and courageous face and attended the dinner. that in itself took guts.
To make it worse, Donald ended up sitting subsequent to one among his toughest lenders. naturally enough, the meal did not start on a pleasant notice. by way of staying robust (rather than groveling as he turned into possibly expected to do) and final affable, Donald grew to become the scenario around and became capable of getting the person to agree to discuss phrases on the following Monday.
Monday dawned and a deal was struck. The success component? This specific creditor had already long past after numerous other humans in default and become embroiled in prison battles that have been eating up fees quicker than Rosie eats fries (that one’s for you, Donald). If Trump had been One of the first human beings the creditor pursued, he may not have been so fortunate.
Trump Colbert
The “make your personal success” component: If Trump had now not gotten off his backside and gone to the dinner, he would by no means were “fortunate” sufficient to get seated next to a creditor who has been inside the technique of drawing up “cross for his jugular” papers.
5) Rent the nice human beings – then watch them. All too regularly, commercial enterprise owners Hire tremendous human beings after which do not pay close sufficient attention to what’s taking place. This may result in human beings running your enterprise via embezzling funds and worse. What wishes to move hand in hand with this? Recognize. human beings need to Appreciate you. It is ok if they even have a little fear too because then they aren’t going to try to take gain of you. Which bring us to factor #6.
