Kai didn't think you'd run against him after he technically assaulted you in his office. He thought you would fear him, knowing what he was capable of, and knowing now that he wasn't afraid to show that to you.

"Winter!" Kai called out to his sister, who after a minute, came running down the stairs to be of service.

"Yes Kai?" She asked wearily, noticing her brother's heated tone and the way his teeth were grit and his jaw was locked.

"Read this bullshit and then get everyone to come down here, obviously killing Sally Kefler wasn't enough," he muttered, pushing himself in his wheeled desk chair to give Winter the room to crouch down by the monitor and read the post.

In her head, she was pleased at the opponent's policies, so happy to see that there was a candidate that actually cared about everyone's quality of life. Winter was never a firm believer in her brother's views, but since he was all she had, she had no choice but to stick by his side. They were blood, and nothing could come between that, even Kai's cult. The group was getting tired of culling Kai's completion, but seeing as it was the only way for him to become councilman, it was almost a weekly mandatory occurrence.

"This is Y/N, my opposing candidate for council," Kai sets his laptop in his lap, and turns it around so the screen was on display to the rest of the group. Most eyebrows shot up in interest, some recognising your face from town hall.

Ivy delves into the dynamic of the cult, revealing to you in the process their plan to "get rid of you".

"I knew that was going to happen," a small smile curls at the corner of your mouth, "I know he killed Sally."

"Look-" Ivy reaches across the sofa to grab onto one of your hands. You noticed her palm was clammy.

"I'll let you know when he comes up with an official plan, you'll be safe, we'll get you out of here."

It warmed your heart to know Ivy was on your side, but you couldn't help but question her motive, despite telling you she despised Kai and felt sucked in by his charisma and promised protection. Maybe she was just trying to infiltrate your group and get the ins and outs of your plans.

"Prove it to me," you start, letting go of her hand and crossing your arms over your chest, "prove it to me, and tell me where Kai will be tonight."

Her eyes widen at your sudden change in attitude, but she nods her head in understanding. You assumed Ivy realised that it seemed sceptical.

"Okay, I'll text Jude his whereabouts," Ivy stands, smoothing out her sweater, "I know he's feeling threatened at the moment, and if I know him well enough, I can guess he'd be at a bar tonight mixing vodka with his adderall."

It was 8 pm on the dot, and just as Ivy said, you'd peered inside to see Kai sitting alone behind the bar on first, mixing his drink with his forefinger. His head was bowed as his eyes stayed focused on the glass in front of him, his lips turned downwards into a scowl, his forehead creased with wrinkles. He almost looked as though he was ready to pick up his glass and throw it across the room. You pushed open the door and let yourself inside, strategically sitting three barstools away from your worst sworn enemy.

"Vodka and coke please," you order politely from the bartender, and sit with your fingers tapping the bench as he nods and pours together your drink.

You weren't sure what your plan was now that you were here, alone, close to Kai. You saw him in the corner of your eye, watching as he tilted his head back and finished his drink, his adam's apple bobbing with every gulp. You shifted in your seat, thanking the bartender as he handed you your drink. You looked down at it, and only just realised how badly you needed to take the edge off. It didn't take long for you to finish your first drink, and then your second. Soon, you were four drinks deep and the room started to spin in slow, whirling circles. You hadn't had much time to eat today, and the alcohol courses through your veins steadily making your heart thump.

Cumberland City Council votes to overturn ban on gay parenting books

Cumberland City Council has voted to reinstate gay parenting books after they were banned from eight publicly funded libraries. 

Last week, Cumberland City Council voted in favour of a motion to rid its libraries of any books that contain material on same-sex parents.

However, last night the council passed the motion to reinstate the books, with 12 members voting for and two against after more than four hours of debate.

The ban was put forward by city councillor and former Cumberland City mayor Steve Christou.

He alleged that parents were “distraught” upon seeing the book Same-Sex Parents by Holly Duhig in local libraries.

Caroline Staples, a resident of the Cumberland area and a grandmother in a rainbow family, addressed the meeting and tabled two petitions signed by a total of 51,960 people including 2247 from the local area.

“Council has listened to local voices and united around the core value of ensuring all families feel welcome and that every child is given the chance to learn, grow and flourish,” she said.

“I have been overwhelmed by the volume and diversity of support for reversing the ban and I would like to thank every single person who signed the petition to ensure the children of rainbow families are seen and feel safe.”

Protesters clash outside Cumberland City council meeting

Protests outside the council chambers between groups were heated, with the ABC reporting people yelling “go back to Newtown” and “leave our kids alone”.

While on the other side, supporters were chanting “bigots are not welcome here”.

Equality Australia legal director Ghassan Kassisieh said the vote showed that modern Australia doesn’t accept book banning or erasure.

“We don’t want to see imported American-style culture wars causing harm and sowing division in our diverse communities,” he said.

“We should not need a riot squad to keep a local council meeting safe. This is not who we are. There must be a place for all of us here.”

Treating Facebook Pages Like Front Lawns: Etiquet on the Internet

I recently shared this tenant with my son, Anderson Rearick IV. concerning online politeness, I view an individual's Facebook page as his or her front lawn and porch. They may express any opinion via any sign or fly any flag they wish. If I like it, I may give a thumbs up as would if I were driving by their house, and if I don't, I do NOTHING! I treat a person's Facebook page in the same manner. It's their home, their space, and I respect the space.

When I was a boy in the sixties, I actually was taught in class how to be polite on the phone. Do any schools now teach Internet, I'm told they do but they do not appear on the TEST. Of course, such training must begin at home, but giving it more weight in our young curriculums might be an idea.

I concede that other social platforms have different dynamics. Twitter / X seems to be built on the idea of forming a comment to elicit a response. Thus there is a tendency of trends and key phrases. Turning down the heat there will involve a return to debate without attacking the moral nature of the appointment. But for this essay, there is a simple rule: remember to stay off another person's lawn.

Facebook comments I told my son are not quiet claims made over a coffee counter: they are bullhorns on a public corner. They are Public like my front porch or my flagpole. But I would never go on another's front porch and yell inside someone's home, nor pull down their flag, nor uproot a lawn sign. As public as such spaces are, they belong to that person.

If I disagree, and I often do, with what others put on their front porches, I am free to put up a sign on my own lawn or fly my own flag. And the same is true of Facebook pages.

Note: I flew the Police flag (which has an American flag pattern with a blue stripe in its middle) both on my real-life porch and on this web page when the riots occurred. My father was in Law Enforcement, and I value those who pursue that calling and honor the sacrifice they often make.

I especially knew the toll that the barrage of negative press was having on them because I saw my father suffer when the FBI came under question back in the eighties. So I flew the flag. I did not fly it on other FaceBook pages with other agendas nor did I comment on those who disagreed with me on their sites.

You are free to disagree with my choice back then but this is not an invitation to argue so do not comment on that issue here This is not a space of debate. I sometimes do invite debate. And if I do, I will say so. But I do note the difference.

When my fellow citizens express a religious or political position on their Facebook, I leave their pages alone. It's called courtesy. It is a vital attribute for us as we live together in peace in this wonderful and blessed nation even in times of dissention.

California Governor Gavin Newsom admitted to considering curfews to combat the Cornavirus such as those in Saudi Arabia. Should we also consider that regime’s methods for controlling carnal deviants and reluctance to allow female drivers on the roads as well?

In a podcast with social theorist Yuval Levin, Southern Baptist functionary Russell Moore remarked how easily people get offended over social media as a result of taking things so seriously. But hasn’t he himself contributed to this environment in light of his overreaction to Donald Trump --- likening the at the time candidate to a “Bronze Age warlord” ---- as well as Moore’s conniptions in response to support for the Confederate flag on the part of some Southern Baptists in that particular ecclesiastical association?

Regarding these medical cost sharing ministries that posture as being morally superior to traditional health insurance and attempt to guiltttrip Christians into signing up by emphasizing the opposition to abortion. If members write checks directly to cover each other’s expenses, what is to prevent this service from degenerating into a popularity contest or as a way of rewarding who can be the squeakiest wheel? After all, as anyone that has been around church for a while knows, some are inherently granted most of the attention while others that are quieter are nearly always overlooked.

A headline at ChurchMilitant.com read, “A Message To Mayor Pete From A Latino Momma: Don’t Force Your Sexual Ideology On Me and My Children”. It must be asked, what does your race or ethnicity have to do with this? Is it somehow less of a moral outrage when this sort of invasive totalitarianism is imposed upon White children? Are Latinos, even the ones no darker than run of the mill White people with a suntan, somehow more moral than Caucasians?

Contrary to Kamala Harris, not everyone here deserves to be recognized as an American. Only those with U.S. citizenship should be recognized as Americans.

If you get more back in a child tax credit than you paid in taxes, that is not a credit but rather a welfare handout. I don’t care what President is behind it --- Reagan, Trump, Obama or Biden.

Insisting that something is not political but rather scientific is euphemism that you do not possess the right to question or critique regime decrees.

The Centers for Disease Control, an agency under the auspices of Autarch Biden, issued a decree advising Americans not to travel at this time. It is feared that such could spark another round of Coronavirus. Yet the Autarch is extending his blessing to illegal migrants not only brought into the territorial boundaries of the United States but also allowing their free movement across the country without being subjected to the same invasive medical exams actual Americans are subjected to often as a condition of being allowed out of their very homes or to go about making a living.

In response to the Colorado supermarket massacre, Autarch Biden remarked that he would not be speculating or commenting as to the motives of the gunman. No doubt because the name and geographic origins of the murderer was evocative of Islamist jihadism. For Biden certainly doesn’t mind shooting off at the mouth to parrot platitudes and talking points in condemnation of “White supremacy” and “systematic racism”. For someone supposedly not wanting to speculate as to the nature of the specifics of this incident, the Autarch certainly did not mind droning on about the need for increased gun control.

On Fox News, a Democratic propagandist remarked that it was imperative to remember that acts of violence have been inflicted upon people of color for decades. So because minorities were mistreated in the past, the launching of bottle rockets at diners in a restaurant that played no part in that mistreatment is really no big deal. The interview ended with the remark that we all need to come together and be united. But just what exactly is the average American obligated to surrender for such a ballyhooed state to come about if such explicit acts of terrorism are being inflicted upon those for merely peacefully expressing a dietary preference and dismissed by pundits claiming to speak on behalf of the nation’s most powerful political party?

Was blocked on facebook from commenting for twenty-four hours over posting a link to a Yahoo story about Republican men being a threat to public health for not getting vaccinated. I titled it “Vaccine Reluctance Equated With Man Spreading, Unwanted Hiney Swatting & Assorted Acts Of Terrorism”. So apparently we must be so pro-vaccine that it is out of line to admit that content exists produced by leftwing technocrats themselves that vaccine reluctance even exists.

Professors helping govt, politicians rig elections – Fr Oluoma comes hard on ASUU ( Video)

Famous Nigerian Catholic priest, Rev Fr Chinenye Oluoma has accused Nigerians, especially the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, of exhibiting wrong attitude, saying it hinders progress and development. Oluoma, in a video posted on his verified Facebook page on Monday, said a wrong attitude can keep a nation from entering its promised land, no matter how much the people pray. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, uses university senior lecturers for the conduct of elections in Nigeria. They serve as returning officers. Using ASUU as an instance, the cleric lamented how members of the union would help politicians rig elections and thereafter turn around to complain about the bad condition of public universities, saying it’s as a result of wrong attitude. He said, “Wrong attitude can keep you from entering the promised land. Sometimes we can pray very well, shake mountains with prayer but our attitude is what keeps us from going into the promised land. “Look at professors, we will have ASUU strike for almost one year, but professors will come and read riot acts and may want to go on strike so that government will do this, government must do that. It will be the same professors that will go and write wrong results. “The same professors that the government will use and rig elections, politicians will use and rig elections, tomorrow universities will not be alright and they will be complaining. Elon Musk Fires Half of Twitter’s Staff

LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), Nov. 4, 2022.--Completing the purchase of Twitter Inc. Oct. 28, 51-year-old billionaire entrepreneur Tesla Motors and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said there would be big changes at the company to streamline operations, making the company profitable.  Twitter’s Board was adamant that they wanted Musk to complete the $44 billion purchase or $54.20 a share purchase.  Musk asked Twitter to account for the amount of “bots” or fake accounts to better ascertain shareholder value.  But instead of talking it out, the Twitter’s board took Musk to Delaware’s Chancery Court to force the sale..  Little did Musk know as the stock price dived to under $30 a share it would rebound today to $53.70, attesting to shareholder confidence.  Firing Twitter’s executive team including CEO Paraq Argawal and Chief Legal Officer Vijaya Gadde, who was responsible for banning former President Donald Trump Jan. 8, 2021, was first.

Musk as a new owner has every right to clean house at Twitter in the executive suite and in rank-and-file employees.  Rebounding to $53.70 as share, evidently shareholders agree with Musk’s plan to streamline the company, finding ways to make the floundering company profitable.  Whether the press despises Musk or not, he’s a decisive CEO knowing what to do to turn around a distressed company.  Today’s press presents Musk as a heartless CEO, selfishly wrecking employees lives to give Twitter new life.  Notifying Twitter staff that 50% would lose their jobs, presents Musk in the worst possible light. “As shared earlier today, Twitter is conducting a workforce reduction to help improve the health of the company.  These decisions are never easy and it is with regret that we write to inform you that your role at Twitter has been impacted,” Musk wrote to employees.

Anytime venture capitalists make investments in businesses, turnaround experts do whatever is necessary to make the business profitable. If you listen to the press, Musk is the most heartless, evil and conniving owner imaginable.  No one likes to lose jobs in merger-and-acquisitions..  “Today is your last working day at the company, however,  you will remain employed by Twitter and will receive compensation and benefits through your separation date of Feb. 2, 2023,” Musk said.  Does that sound like a heartless CEO, giving each rank-and-file Twitter employee three months of severance pay?  Where does the press think it can trash Musk when he’s bent-over-backwards to accommodate all Twitter employees?  How many companies give three months severance with benefits to rank-and-file employee?  Maybe employees get two-weeks or one month worth of pay- and-benefits.

In the scheme of Musk’s work, Twitter doesn’t have the monetized platform needed to generate advertising revenue like most social network platforms.  Facebook and Google generate billions in ad revenue, making their platforms the most profitable in the industry.  Twitter became the preeminent communication platform, used by people and businesses all over the world to get the word out.  Before Trump was banned from Twitter Jan. 8, 2021, he had over 93 million followers.    When Twitter executive Vijaya Gadde banned Trump, Musk, who had nothing to do with Twitter, didn’t like the move because he though it violated free speech.  Jan. 6 Capitol riots were not orchestrated and planned by former President Donald Trump.  Yet Gadde thought nothing of violating Twitter’s 329 protection that requires the platform to let any third-party content without censorship unless it’s obscene.

Losing a job is never easy for executives or rank-and-file employees.  But when a company must be turned around to protect its shareholders, steps must be done for long-term survival.  Musk’s decision to layoff 50% of Twitter’s staff was not some exercise in cruelty but a necessary step in Twitter’s evolution.  “During this time you will be on a None-Working Notice period and you’re access to Twitter systems will be deactivated.  While you are not expected to work during the None-Working Notice period, you are still required to comply with all the company policies, including the Employee Playbook and Code of Conduct,” Musk said, notifying all employees currently under the severance arrangement to respect company policies.  Keeping employees fully informed is the first obligation of transition teams working to make the termination easier for employees dealing with uncertainty.

For whatever reason, the press has it in for Musk, always looking for a way to criticize the billionaire entrepreneur for his business decisions.  Twitter’s board did everything possible to complete the $44 billion, $54.20 a share deal to protect all shareholders.  Paying millions in compensation to executives and give rank-and-file a three-month severance package was more than generous by Musk.  Yet, if you listen to the press Musk has taken workplace cruelty to a new level.  Nothing Musk does since closing the Twitter deal has been anything but above-board.  Turn-a-round experts know what must be done to return companies to profitability, or in the case of Twitter, make the company profitable for the first time.  Musk has given Twitter employees more than a generous termination offer, even if he winds up paying the salary-and-benefits out of his own pocket.

How the world has changed

I love Facebook's remember when because it reminds me of events that I may have forgotten or didn't realize happened so recently or so long ago.

This morning as I was going through I saw so many of my posts about what the world was like a few years ago. We were on lockdown, covid was spreading like wildfire, people were dying and on top of that there were riots all around the world about black lives matter. In all my years on earth I had never seen anything like what was going on during this time.

It felt like the world was imploding on itself. People had so much anger and hatred and most people were just scared of what was going to happen in the fKaren?

I even remember my girls asking me if the world was coming to an end and I honestly couldn't answer them. None of us knew what was going to happen.

I can't imagine what people who had depression issues or anxiety attacks were going through during this time. I look back and think, did we learn anything? Has the world changed because of this? Unfortunately, It doesn't seem like it.

The left is still against the right. Our freedoms are being taken away little by little every day. There are still mass shootings and definitely no different gun controls. Black men are still being shot senselessly without any justification or reprocussings.

If you follow me you know that I try to look for all the lessons in whatever life throws at me. In the good and the bad but others don't see the world like I do. Many people don't want to take responsibility for their actions, or admit to failure or wrongdoing. As if that would make them look bad or less than in others eyes. But we all must stand up and take responsibility for the state the world is in right now.

We allowed politicians to lie to us, to do things that don't benefit the whole instead of just the upper 10%. We haven't spoken up enough for the rights of others when we could have and now our own beliefs and rights are slowly being chipped away at.

People are going without food and shelters in the United States of America!

We are leading into a third world country right in front of our eyes and yet there is no change.

So today my friends, like I always say at the end of every blog, be the change you want to see. I believe that wholeheartedly, we can all change at any time, if we choose to do so. It takes one person to stand up and say enough is enough. One Rosa Parks to say I will no longer stand for this to make a difference. We all need to take responsibility and be that change we want to see.

Married At First Sight Australia has introduced its first two gay grooms in years, but one of the grooms is “shocked” he was even included at all.

Season 11 of the blockbuster Australian reality TV show started on Nine on Monday night (January 29).

MAFS introduced Simon Flocco in the series premiere, and the Adelaide man shared his background at the groom’s party.

“I always had girlfriends,” Simon said. “It just took me a while to realise what my true sexuality was.”

But we already know the 39-year-old quits the show shortly after filming the groom party.

Ahead of the premiere, Simon criticised the producers’ decision to include him in the casting lineup through the use of a crudely photoshopped iPhone photo.

Asked about the situation by the Daily Mail, Simon asked, “Why am I even in the lineup? I suppose they’d do anything for ratings, right?”

The outlet reported an “utterly gobsmacked” Simon assumed he’d be edited out and he refused to give producers control of his Instagram.

“Simon thought he was completely out of the picture,” a source said.

“Seeing that photoshopped image [on the cast lineup] was a real shocker for him.”

Yahoo! Lifestyle claimed producers did consider editing Simon out entirely. But they ultimately decided to include him as his dramatic exit was a “real moment” that shows “not everyone can handle the pressure of the experiment,” the outlet reported.

MAFS groom Michael Felix is a ‘goddamn treasure’

Meanwhile, the MAFS premiere also introduced another gay groom Michael Felix, from Victoria. On Monday night, Michael attended the bridal party before meeting his husband-to-be.

I was a 12 years old when I was attacked by a mob of children and called "Christ killer" — the same age Jesus was, according to the Gospel of Luke, when he lingered in the Temple of Jerusalem and impressed the elders with his intellect — so this issue is undeniably personal. That wasn't the first or last time I was bullied for being Jewish, but it was the only time I nearly died because of it: Those kids held my head underwater, chanting, "Drown the Jew!"

This incident sprang back to mind  this month as Republicans tried to figure out what to do about Greene, a particularly obnoxious Christian right-winger who has suggested that a "space laser" affiliated with Jewish banking families caused the 2018 Camp Fire in California, expressed sympathy for the anti-Semitic QAnon fantasies, promoted a video that claimed Jews are trying to destroy Europe, posed for a picture with a Ku Klux Klan leader and liked a tweet linking Israel to the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

None of this is surprising for anyone who is familiar with the history of American anti-Semitism. Greene is not an aberration, some inexplicable pimple of hatred that blemishes the American right's otherwise Jew-friendly visage. The American right has long had an anti-Semitism problem, and she's just the latest symptom.

This history of hatred "tells us much more about the anti-Semite than it tells us about Jews," Dr. Jonathan Sarna, a professor of American Jewish history at Brandeis University, told Salon. After citing an Israeli historian who refers to anti-Semitism as a "cultural code," Sarna explained that beliefs that vilify Jews as malevolent plotters who secretly control the world have a long history in American political life. "These ideas, which I think many on the left frankly had thought were done and over with, we suddenly see them full blown," he said

Before the 19th century, Sarna explained Jews were stereotypically depicted as being cursed: They were "wandering Jews" for their supposed role in killing Jesus Christ. In the modern era, however, the stereotype emerged that Jews secretly controlled the world and were responsible for everything that a given anti-Semite might regard as sinister. During the Civil War, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant blamed the Jews for cotton smuggling and expelled the entire Jewish community from areas he controlled in Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. When the populist movement arose to address agrarian economic concerns in the 1890s, Jewish bankers like the Rothschilds were a frequent target among ideological leaders like William Hope "Coin" Harvey.

There's a direct line between those conspiratorial fantasies ideas from previous decades and the anti-Semitic attacks of the 21st century. "Conspiratorial thinking, by its nature, argues that everything is connected," Sarna explained. "There are no coincidences and it eschews complexity. It believes there are simple explanations based on sinister individuals who are manipulating the universe. Unsurprisingly, in a Christian setting, those are Jews."

Those ideas can evolve — Sarna pointed out that the QAnon belief in a giant child abuse ring run by Jews is analogous to the "blood libel," the medieval myth that Jews used the blood of Christian children for rituals — but the underlying assumptions have been consistent. It just so happens that, in the modern right-wing incarnation, Donald Trump's cult-like following believes that "all the enemies of Mr. Trump are now child molesters."

[Jewish comedian Larry Charles] brought up community organizer and political theorist Saul Alinsky, a favorite target of the right. "He is almost like the devil in a way," Charles observed. "He's like this radical leftist Jew, he fits all the categories. He checks all the boxes."

"Shooting some of these movies, we would see reasonable people who have this blind spot," Charles said. "They have this crazy belief, and there were all different applications and manifestations of it, that the Jews control everything. That is like a mantra amongst a certain segment of the population."

With the election of Trump in 2016, those ingrained belief systems — which for many years had been kept outside the American political mainstream — became more prominent, and their adherents more emboldened. David Weissman, a military veteran and former conservative Republican who stopped being a self-described "Trump troll" after a 2018 conversation with comedian Sarah Silverman, told Salon about his encounters with anti-Semitism on the right.

Back when he still supported Trump, Weissman recalled, he got into a "little spat" with an alt-right commentator who calls himself Baked Alaska, who was recently arrested after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Ultimately they moved past it, Weissman said: "We both realized we were Trump supporters" who believed "Democrats were the bad guys." Once he left MAGA world, however, Weissman said "the anti-Semitism definitely escalated" in interactions with his former allies.

"When I became a Democrat, I was called 'the k-word'" and targeted by "anti-Semitic slurs and tropes," Weissman said. Trump supporters sent "memes of me being Jewish in the oven," and "put my name in parentheses," a common tactic used by the far right to target someone for being Jewish.

"Anti-Semitism certainly did not start with Marjorie Taylor Greene, nor did it start with Donald Trump, but we have seen an exponential increase in violent anti-Semitic incidents during Donald Trump's presidency," Halie Soifer, CEO of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, told Salon. "That is no doubt related to the fact that he emboldened and aligned himself with white nationalism." She mentioned Trump equating the neo-Nazis in Charlottesville with the peaceful protesters by "commenting that there were very fine people on both sides," refusing to denounce white nationalism and telling the right-wing Proud Boys during one of the campaign debates to "stand back and stand by."

"White nationalism had existed in our country prior to that, and anti-Semitism as an element of it, but white nationalists had never had an ally in the White House until Donald Trump," Soifer said.

Donald Trump's supposed pro-Israel policies were closely aligned with those of Benjamin Netanyahu, and did nothing to correct for Trump's history of anti-Semitic words and actions. He accused Jewish Democrats of "great disloyalty" toward Israel (feeding into the stereotype that Jews have dual loyalties), removed any specific reference to Jews from a 2017 State Department statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day and has frequently used anti-Semitic dogwhistle terms by opposing "globalists" and describing himself as a "nationalist." When I interviewed Charlotte Pence, the daughter of former Vice President Mike Pence, she talked about her family's love of Israel but refused to answer a question about whether she believes Jews are going to hell — or discuss the creepy messianic theories underpinning the Christian right's support for Israel.

When I asked Larry Charles whether, based on his experiences, there's an opportunity to build bridges with anti-Semites, he was skeptical. "I have not seen a lot of opportunities for bridge building in the situations that I've been in," Charles explained. "The people that I've met through Sacha [Baron Cohen] were very rigid and dogmatic in their prejudices. There was no crossing that gulf with them. There might be tolerance, temporarily. There might be patience, temporarily. But there's no changing that belief."

I hope that Charles is wrong but suspect he is right, which raises the question of how American Jews should react to the Marjorie Taylor Greenes of the world. For want of a better alternative, I think the only solution is to be intolerant toward intolerance. House Democrats were right to strip Greene of her committee assignments, but that is not nearly enough. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter need to do more to limit hate speech, even if conservatives cry foul in bad faith (the First Amendment only protects people from government censorship, not consequences from private corporations). Right-wing politicians who attack prominent Jews in ways that can be plausibly construed as anti-Semitic, or by denouncing "globalists," need to lose their funding. People who oppose anti-Semitism must lead boycotts against right-wing media figures who cover for people like Greene, such as Fox News' Sean Hannity.

On a broader level, critics of anti-Semitism must recognize that this form of bigotry is part of America's long history of hate — a history which holds that only white, straight Christian "manly" men have a right to rule — and recognize our responsibility to be allies to African Americans and the Latinx community, Muslims and the LGBT community, women suffering under the patriarchy and the poor struggling to make ends meet. If we limit our empathy merely to other Jews, the implicit message is not that systemic oppression is wrong, but only that we happen to dislike it when our group is targeted. The Jewish tradition at its best instills a moral responsibility to see all the layers of oppression, and align ourselves with its victims.

Dis- and misinformation were no longer exogenous toxins but contagious organisms, producing persuasion upon exposure as inevitably as cough or fever. In a perfect inversion of the language of digital-media hype, “going viral” was now a bad thing. In October, Anne Applebaum proclaimed in The Atlantic that Trump was a “super-spreader of disinformation.” A study earlier that month by researchers at Cornell found that 38 percent of the English-language “misinformation conversation” around COVID-19 involved some mention of Trump, making him, per the New York Times, “the largest driver of the ‘infodemic.’”

This finding resonated with earlier research suggesting that disinformation typically needs the support of political and media elites to spread widely. That is to say, the persuasiveness of information on social platforms depends on context. Propaganda doesn’t show up out of nowhere, and it doesn’t all work the same way. Ellul wrote of the necessary role of what he called “pre-propaganda”:

Direct propaganda, aimed at modifying opinions and attitudes, must be preceded by propaganda that is sociological in character, slow, general, seeking to create a climate, an atmosphere of favorable preliminary attitudes. No direct propaganda can be effective without pre-propaganda, which, without direct or noticeable aggression, is limited to creating ambiguities, reducing prejudices, and spreading images, apparently without purpose.

Another way of thinking about pre-propaganda is as the entire social, cultural, political, and historical context. In the United States, that context includes an idiosyncratic electoral process and a two-party system that has asymmetrically polarized toward a nativist, rhetorically anti-elite right wing. It also includes a libertarian social ethic, a “paranoid style,” an “indigenous American berserk,” a deeply irresponsible national broadcast media, disappearing local news, an entertainment industry that glorifies violence, a bloated military, massive income inequality, a history of brutal and intractable racism that has time and again shattered class consciousness, conspiratorial habits of mind, and themes of world-historical declension and redemption. The specific American situation was creating specific kinds of people long before the advent of tech platforms.

To take the whole environment into view, or as much of it as we can, is to see how preposterously insufficient it is to blame these platforms for the sad extremities of our national life, up to and including the riot on January 6. And yet, given the technological determinism of the disinformation discourse, is it any surprise that attorneys for some of the Capitol rioters are planning legal defenses that blame social-media companies?

Only certain types of people respond to certain types of propaganda in certain situations. The best reporting on QAnon, for example, has taken into account the conspiracy movement’s popularity among white evangelicals. The best reporting about vaccine and mask skepticism has taken into account the mosaic of experiences that form the American attitude toward the expertise of public-health authorities. There is nothing magically persuasive about social-media platforms; they are a new and important part of the picture, but far from the whole thing. Facebook, however much Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg might wish us to think so, is not the unmoved mover.

For anyone who has used Facebook recently, that should be obvious. Facebook is full of ugly memes and boring groups, ignorant arguments, sensational clickbait, products no one wants, and vestigial features no one cares about. And yet the people most alarmed about Facebook’s negative influence are those who complain the most about how bad a product Facebook is. The question is: Why do disinformation workers think they are the only ones who have noticed that Facebook stinks? Why should we suppose the rest of the world has been hypnotized by it? Why have we been so eager to accept Silicon Valley’s story about how easy we are to manipulate?

Within the knowledge-making professions there are some sympathetic structural explanations. Social scientists get funding for research projects that might show up in the news. Think tanks want to study quantifiable policy problems. Journalists strive to expose powerful hypocrites and create “impact.” Indeed, the tech platforms are so inept and so easily caught violating their own rules about verboten information that a generation of ambitious reporters has found an inexhaustible vein of hypocrisy through stories about disinformation leading to moderation. As a matter of policy, it’s much easier to focus on an adjustable algorithm than entrenched social conditions.

Yet professional incentives only go so far in explaining why the disinformation frame has become so dominant. Ellul dismissed a “common view of propaganda . . . that it is the work of a few evil men, seducers of the people.” He compared this simplistic story to midcentury studies of advertising “which regard the buyer as victim and prey.” Instead, he wrote, the propagandist and the propagandee make propaganda together.

One reason to grant Silicon Valley’s assumptions about our mechanistic persuadability is that it prevents us from thinking too hard about the role we play in taking up and believing the things we want to believe. It turns a huge question about the nature of democracy in the digital age—what if the people believe crazy things, and now everyone knows it?—into a technocratic negotiation between tech companies, media companies, think tanks, and universities.

But there is a deeper and related reason many critics of Big Tech are so quick to accept the technologist’s story about human persuadability. As the political scientist Yaron Ezrahi has noted, the public relies on scientific and technological demonstrations of political cause and effect because they sustain our belief in the rationality of democratic government.

Indeed, it’s possible that the Establishment needs the theater of social-media persuasion to build a political world that still makes sense, to explain Brexit and Trump and the loss of faith in the decaying institutions of the West. The ruptures that emerged across much of the democratic world five years ago called into question the basic assumptions of so many of the participants in this debate—the social-media executives, the scholars, the journalists, the think tankers, the pollsters. A common account of social media’s persuasive effects provides a convenient explanation for how so many people thought so wrongly at more or less the same time. More than that, it creates a world of persuasion that is legible and useful to capital—to advertisers, political consultants, media companies, and of course, to the tech platforms themselves. It is a model of cause and effect in which the information circulated by a few corporations has the total power to justify the beliefs and behaviors of the demos. In a way, this world is a kind of comfort. Easy to explain, easy to tweak, and easy to sell, it is a worthy successor to the unified vision of American life produced by twentieth-century television. It is not, as Mark Zuckerberg said, “a crazy idea.” Especially if we all believe it.

Unbelievably, it was only a week ago—last Sunday—that we learned Trump had called Georgia’s Secretary of State and pressured him to change the results of the 2020 election. Trump demanded that Brad Raffensperger “find” the 11,780 votes Trump needed to win Georgia. The news of the attempt to get an election official to overrule the will of the people was astonishing: at the time, it was the worst domestic attack on our democracy ever, coming, as it did, from a sitting president.

At the time.

Over the past several days, the picture of what happened on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, has become clearer, and it’s bad. While Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser gave a press conference Wednesday night, there has been not a single official briefing from the White House, the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, or Capitol Police.

The federal government has gone dark.

What we do know is that on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, egged on by Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani, Alabama Representative Mo Brooks, Don Jr., and especially Trump himself, Trump supporters stormed the Capitol just as Congress was meeting in joint session to confirm Democrat Joe Biden as our new president. They overpowered the Capitol Police—perhaps with the help of some of the officers—breached the doors, and smashed their way through the historic building, shouting for Vice President Mike Pence—whom Trump insisted was at fault for not overturning the count-- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and “traitors” who were counting the electoral votes for Biden. While many of the early pictures from inside the Capitol showed rioters gawking like tourists, ones released this weekend showed violent thugs, carrying plastic handcuffs and seeming to have information about where to find specific members of Congress. They breached the Senate chamber at 2:16, just a minute after the senators made it out.

The Capitol Police got the lawmakers to safety, but were not in control of the building. Lawmakers huddled quietly behind barricaded doors waiting for police that took hours to come. When they did arrive, they cleared the area and regained control of the Capitol. After janitors had cleaned the building, lawmakers counted the electoral votes that established Democrats Biden and Kamala Harris as the next president and vice president of the USA.

As videos have emerged and timelines been established, it has become apparent we came perilously close to seeing our elected representatives taken hostage or even executed on the makeshift gallows the rioters set up outside the building.

But here’s the thing: these were not outside insurgents; they were supporters of the Republican president. Trump enflamed the insurgents but he did not create them: years of demonizing Democrats and suggesting they must not be allowed to govern did that. As NPR reporter Kirk Siegler noted, Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, infamous for years of standoffs with the federal government, wrote on Facebook that Trump “pointed towards Congress and nodded his head… [and said] go get the job done.” Republicans are now caught in a vise of their own making. They have to stand either with their own voters or with democracy.

The night of the attack, more than 100 Republican members of the House of Representatives and several senators, led by Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Ted Cruz (R-TX), continued to endorse Trump’s lies by voting to reject the electoral votes for Biden in key states. The next day, Trump’s supporters tried to argue that the rioters were “Antifa,” despite their Trump garb and the fact Trump invited them, incited them, urged them to go to the Capitol, and after the riot told them he loved them. (An AP investigation establishes that they were right-wing agitators.) When that didn’t take, supporters tried “whataboutism,” comparing the Black Lives Matter protests of this summer to the storming of the Capitol.

They are trying to rewrite the history of this week to downplay that we have suffered an attempted coup that killed at least five people, and that the people behind it are still in the highest levels of our government.

The realization that we are in the midst of a coup, abetted by Trump’s use of social media, prompted Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to ban Trump permanently, and to take down QAnon accounts. That, not the Capitol attack and the murder of a police officer, has created outrage among Trump, who is allegedly “ballistic,” and Trump supporters. Republican lawmakers spent the weekend noting how many followers they were losing as Twitter took down QAnon, Nazi, and fake accounts. (Trump opponents noted that this was not actually a good thing to call attention to.) Parler has lost almost all of its supporting businesses and might go out of business itself.

Democrats are appalled by what Trump has wrought, and they are joined by plenty of Republicans. In the National Review, for example, Ed Whelan called the Capitol attack “an outrage that ought to have every genuinely patriotic American seething with anger.” He blamed Trump for inciting the attack, and said that “impeachment and conviction of Trump is an appropriate, and probably a necessary, response.”

In a powerful video, former Republican Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger called the Capitol attack the American equivalent to Kristallnacht, which marked the beginning of German Nazis’ systemic destruction of the Jews. To puncture the idea that the sort of behavior on display on Wednesday was manly, Schwarzenegger told the private story of his abuse at the hands of his father, who had been swept up in the Nazi movement in Austria, and celebrated the sword from his starring role in the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian as a symbol not of toxic masculinity but of democracy, tempered by adversity. He called on all Americans to rally around Biden and to work to make his administration a success.

White House appointees’ resignations show which way the wind is blowing. Trump’s former Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney took to Fox News Sunday to say he had no idea that people might actually do something like attack the Capitol. “People took him literally,” Mulvaney told MSNBC. “I never thought I’d see that.”

Similarly, the rioters themselves, once found and arrested, are either apologizing and saying they were swept up in the moment, or denying they were part of the mob. One man apologized for his “indiscretion.”

Both Marriott, the world’s largest hotel chain, and health insurer Blue Cross Blue Shield have suspended their donations to lawmakers who voted against the counting of Biden’s electoral votes late Wednesday or early Thursday morning. The anti-Trump Lincoln Project has promised to target companies that donate to any lawmakers who voted against the counting of the electoral votes. Hitting closer to Trump, Stripe, the vendor that handles online credit card payments for Trump’s campaign, has announced it will no longer handle his account. And tonight, the Professional Golfers Association of America Board of Directors took the 2022 PGA Championship away from Trump Bedminster, his New Jersey club.

At the end of last week, Democratic leaders set out a three-part plan to punish the president for inciting an insurrection. They gave Pence an option to begin the process of invoking the 25th Amendment, which, considering the president had tried to get him killed, was not necessarily a long shot. Pence refused. They gave McConnell the weekend to convince Trump to resign. Trump refused. They announced that, if both of those things failed, they would begin impeachment proceedings on Monday.

McConnell promptly noted that the Senate could not take up such a proceeding until the day before Biden’s inauguration at the earliest. He is bargaining. It is possible to hold an impeachment trial even after a president is out of office, but he knows that Biden does not want the beginning of his term crowded with more Trump business, especially as coronavirus is raging and Biden wants to get it under control. McConnell doesn’t want Republicans to have to vote either for or against the president because such a vote will slice the Republicans in two and make it clear that some of them stand for insurrection. In the Senate, only Republicans Mitt Romney (R-UT), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Pat Toomey (R-PA) have endorsed impeachment.

McConnell is hoping Pelosi will blink and the moment will pass.

She will not, and it will not. She notes, correctly, that the president is “an imminent threat” to “our Constitution and our Democracy,” and she is trying to give the Republicans cover to do the right thing. Tonight, she announced that the House tomorrow will begin proceedings on a resolution by Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD) calling on Pence to mobilize the Cabinet to activate the 25th Amendment within 24 hours. If he declines, the House will turn to impeachment. She has asked for unanimous consent for the resolution to enable the Republicans to avoid a vote. If they refuse, the measure will go forward the next day anyway.

She also fired a shot across the bow of Republican lawmakers by asking her colleagues for their views on the third section of the 14th Amendment, the one that prohibits anyone who “shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against the United States, “or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof,” from serving in Congress.

As I watch Republican lawmakers try to slip away from the crisis they have made, I think of Black Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman, armed only with a nightstick, luring the insurgents in the wrong direction to buy the time Senators needed to escape with their lives.

Good morning! This was yesterday. I am going to try to do better about journaling and taking photos.

Last night, I had a few interactions in social media with my cousin and her friend that I want to write about. (I've never met this cousin. My family moved before she was born and although I love her Dad and Mom, I rarely get back to Idaho to visit. She is living in Oregon and is much more on the passionate, wild side with not having a steady job, completed any education, and so we are 20 years separated by age and very separated by experiences and understanding.)

My cousin has been participating in the protests in Oregon surrounding Black Lives matter. She took offense to a comment I made on her Facebook page. I, who rarely read or watch the news, inadvertently used a phrase that some find offensive "All Lives Matter" (it seems because they think it is intending to take away from the BLM message according to the news sources I found.)

Oh heavens! My whole journal for the day, which took about an hour to write, is gone. So.. cliff notes version:

I am horrified along with others. I DO want to see all individuals coming safely home at the end of each day. There must be some good to come out of these tragedies! Let's seek to be the change.

For those business and families especially being impacted due to the rioting, COVID-19 quarantine.. look to see how we can help. I do worry about unintented consequences..of greater economic impact leading to more unemployment, crime, hunger, and domestic violence..
