Say what you want about Stephon Marbury and his one-time eating Vaseline (home remedy to cure a sore throat) on camera when he played for the Boston Celtics (2009) only to find out that he was hurting and dealing with depression.

We even discussed the video on the Obsessive Sneaker Disorder (OSD) podcast when the video surfaced.

Steph went on to get the help that he needed and while it looked like things were a wrap for him in the NBA, he went on to play in Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).

He won 3 CBA titles with the Beijing Ducks (2012, 2014, and 2015) and they love him so much that he had a statue dedicated in his honor in 2012.

While Steph was playing in New York for the Knicks he launched the Starbury sneaker line with the now-defunct Steve & Barry’s selling sneakers for $14.98.

Check out the NPR podcast which opens addressing Zion Williamson’s blown out sneakers as Duke played UNC-Chapel Hill (February 20, 2019) and the Starbury sneakers that Stephon Marbury wore while he played with Knicks.

You’ll hear Kenny Malone of the “Planet Money” podcast interviewed Stephon Marbury, in 2006, and discuss what it meant for him to make it to the NBA and being able to take care of his family financially.

Stephon met with Steve & Barry’s in 2005 and in 2006, they released the Starbury 1 sneakers at the retail price of $14.98.  

There was a lot of negative talk about the sneakers, but I was hopeful and excited about the Starbury line and the shakeup that was taking place in the sneaker world.

In August 2006, while working at Sole Collector Magazine, Bob Ley of ESPN “Outside the Lines”, ran a piece where I shared my thoughts about the Starbury line and their unbelievable price of $14.98.

If you do a quick Google search of the Starbury Crossover, which had a retail price of $9.98, you’ll notice how similar they are to the Air Force 1s and if you search for the Starbury Cyclones, which also sold for $9.98, you’d be quick to say that they looked a lot like a pair of New Balance 574s.

Fast forward to 2018, and Stephon Marbury brought back the Starbury line in limited quantities and most of them will be sold online and even at a brick and mortar store in Coney Island, Brooklyn.
