Hi my name is Shannon McGovern and I have just finished four years of Digital Marketing at AIT. I really enjoyed every moment of my college experience and I will cherish the memories forever. I remember moving to Athlone in first year being scared and nervous as I knew nobody and coming from Carlow I was leaving my friends and family that I had spent all of my time with. By the end of the first introductory week I didn’t want to go home, I loved it so much. I moved into an apartment with 5 other people and we got on like a house on fire. Everybody in the college was so welcoming and my course peers were so friendly. We spent the first few weeks all getting to know each other and going through different learning outcomes in the course.

I really enjoyed studying Digital Marketing. As you can probably tell the Digital world is flourishing and there is a huge demand for highly skilled digital marketers. The course was very enjoyable and it had a lot of practical elements to it rather than theory which suited me more. As well as that there was a lot of continuous assessment rather than numerous end of year exams. I studied different modules throughout the four years including SEO ( search engine optimisation) and web design, social media marketing to advanced analytics, cyber psychology and lots more. The lecturers were just unbelievable. They were so friendly and helpful and answered any question you ever had. The relationship I built with many lecturers and guidance they gave me really helped me flourish and perform to the best of my ability. I studied extremely hard throughout the four years which led me to getting a 1:1 each year in college. Throughout the four years I completed different certificates including Hubspot Inbound Marketing and Google AdWords Certification which are hugely beneficial when applying for jobs. Throughout the years I also attended many marketing events all over the country which I would recommend to any student studying the course. I went to events like the DMX, 3XE and the Tech Summit which are held in Dublin once a year. It was great to gain more knowledge about the digital environment and talking to people working in it already.

In terms of getting involved in college, I became a PASS leader ( peer assisted student support) when I was in second year. The aim of this programme was to assist first years starting out in digital marketing and giving them a helping hand. We met with the first year class on a weekly basis and organised ice breakers and different games to get the class interacting. They also had many questions for us to answer about college life and modules that they may not have wanted to ask any lecturers so having PASS leaders who were only a year ahead of the first years I think was a great programme and made the students feel comfortable. At the beginning you can tell everybody is nervous and scared and by the end of the year they started to build relationships with each other and become comfortable and confident. I really enjoyed being a PASS leader. It improved my confidence and I loved helping out the students as I knew what it was like to start as a first year when you don’t know anybody. I was also a student ambassador in my third and fourth year. This was truly a great experience. We represented the college at many events like the open day of AIT and gave tours of the college as well as helping anyone with questions or queries about the college. I also participated in video and photo events talking about my experience in AIT. I really enjoyed being a student ambassador as it provided new learning opportunities each day. Helping out at the different events I felt like a leader and I loved showing people the college I started my journey in.

In my final year of college it was probably one of the best in terms of the course. The full year was dedicated to a Capstone Project where each of us worked for a company remotely throughout the year on a digital marketing strategy. I worked with Neueda Technologies Athlone, a multinational software development company. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and I transformed their online digital presence. Each week I made content plans and designed content for the company as well as building a new website for them. Content consisted of both photos and videos, I went to the office on a  weekly basis and got staff to interact in the content too. I built a great professional relationship with the company and I didn’t want it to end. I gained great a valuable insight into the world of work which will stand to me when applying for jobs. At the end of the year I  presented all of the work I had done for Neueda to the lecturers and the company where I received great feedback.

Overall I really enjoyed my time at AIT. Unfortunately it was cut short due to Covid-19 but I have made friendships that will last a lifetime. The experiences and memories I have made throughout my journey at AIT have been amazing. I will thoroughly miss it but the last four years have  introduced me to the world of digital marketing and given me the tools I require to join the working world.
