…well, it’s a good thing motivation withered and died a long time ago, that scan is crap. :\ I forgot my scanner bed is tiny now, and certainly not large enough to accommodate this sketchbook. I mean, it was fun drawing traditionally again, for the first time in what feels like years (it has not literally been years), but uhh yeah, scanning. Already an iffy proposition with this printer now, this POS that works improperly after less than 4 months. I’m using the webscan option (typing in the printer’s IP address lets you do stuff via the web including scan) but it has less options than the regular HP Smart program. BUT I can still scan, so that’s something.  You don’t need to hear me whine about my life and I’d get no sympathy anyway so that’s beyond the point.

ANYWAY

@erinhime83 asked if I could sort of doodle something period for Tori, which...cool. After getting confirmation that this is in the 1860s (@anijeltaventry has yet to specify whether it’s pre- or post-Civil War :P) I came up with…something? Honestly, it’s a little bit disappointing I’m sure, because most women were, more or less, wearing what everyone else was at the time, just scaled down to reflect their lesser incomes compared to the elite. The idea of the “pioneer” woman, living way out in the bush…well, I’m sure it does apply, but I doubt it applies to Tori. This isn’t my character, but my guesstimate is:

a) if her father were really, truly wealthy, old-money Americans they wouldn’t just pack up and move West; he’s probably new money, or at the very least has enough to live comfortably, and being new money means he (probably?) would be freer to do whatever he liked because he’s not really a member of the Old Boys’ Club, just some schmo who got lucky; and,

b) Like, they have money, they’re probably not going to be living in a log cabin somewhere; and also,

c) <Town Name> has things like a saloon and a decent industry and enough nearby towns (Absolution, for one) that it’s probably not as remote as it seems (compared to living out in the bush, that is).

So having women dress up a bit like high society makes sense. You’ll get fairly standard stuff like this, and this, and this.

The key things about 1860s fashion (that’s also, partly, a holdover from the 1850s) are:

a: Big-ass hoop skirts. The shape varied, from more traditionally round in the early decades, to a more oval shape/more weight piled on the back in the later years, in the lead-up to the 1870s and bustles. I went with a standard circular skirt, but toned it down a bit—because as you can see in these pictures, they were full, but not necessarily that full? I mean, I could have gone all out, but that doesn’t necessarily seem to be the style for daily wear. (I know it’s not fair to compare pictures from different regions, but I think these pictures seem to be more fitting for the upper-middle-class look I’m aiming for.

b) Waists were high, sitting somewhere at the natural waist rather than the hips. The emphasis was on making this look as small as possible. Tightlacing really wasn’t a thing yet. Women achieved the illusion of small waists by emphasizing broad shoulders (hence the dropped shoulder seams and decorations) and wide skirts, which naturally made the waist look smaller. Tightlacing, from what I remember, only started coming in the 1870s throughout the 1890s, when skirts became less fluffy and bodices became tighter. So Tori likely would be wearing a corset but it probably wouldn’t impede her too much.

(Not wearing a corset was apparently a thing as well among certain crowds but I’m not sure Tori would have been that progressive? Also I’m not sure how it would work since a lot of those undergarments would hook onto the corset or something like it. I know it did happen but I don’t know the specifics.)

c) As I said, the focus was on broad shoulders. The ruffles around the neckline have been seen elsewhere, and the ruffles along the bottom is mostly just to match. Let’s not think about all the accumulated dirt, dirt, and grime it would catch from just walking around. Let’s just not.

d) The bodices always buttoned down the front, but how prominent the buttons are depend on the dress—I’ve seen some wooden or metal ones, and I’ve also seen ones wrapped in the same fabric as the dress so they won’t stand out.

As for why I chose what I did for Tori…well, a) I wanted it to be early simple so if @erinhime83 likes it, she won’t be cursing my name for drawing something too complicated, and b) Like I said, trying to make her semi-match the setting.

The belt…emphasizes the waist nicely, but I’m also thinking that the belt, the cuffs, and the stripes holding the box pleats in place could be an accent colour. This dress could work as a solid colour, but it could also work with a pattern—patterns were popular then, including plaid/checks, and busy stripes (you’ll see period examples in other links). It seems a bit baffling to the eyes but it would be period. If a pattern was chosen, picking a secondary colour (from the pattern) would make a great accent.

Also, I like belts, so this was 100% my aesthetic here.

As for the sleeves…eh, I’m not super fond of them myself, but sleeves like that seem to be period so I can’t complain. There were other choices in sleeves, such as these wide pagoda sleeves (scroll down to the woman in the belt), but I felt that would be a bit much with the shoulder decoration. They’d be paired with false under sleeves to create the look of two layers (and extra fullness).

The collar might not necessarily be part of the dress itself, but could easily have been handmade lace or crochet—something she’d have made herself (an acceptable hobby for a woman). I want to say “fancywork” was the term but I could be completely misremembering and I’m not motivated enough to look it up. :\

In hindsight all of this stuff might not work if her father is eccentric and she’s his favourite—she might be allowed more leeway than a “typical” woman of means, perhaps.

Hair-wise…this period was pretty simplistic in design, to be honest. Hair parted in the middle, maybe smoothed over the ears, and pulled into a bun in the back appeared to be standard-issue hair for any woman old enough to wear her hair up. When you’re wearing a bonnet (as she would be outside), I imagine you’re not seeing too much of the hair anyway.

Then I found this hairstyle and thought it looked period enough while also adding a little something extra, so I went with it. It might not be period, but it looks pretty. Unfortunately I can’t find the original link again despite hunting for days, but this is fairly close.

As for earrings, I’m not 100% sure if they’re period? I’ve seen some women with but just as many, if not more, without. They’d likely be simple disc-shapes earrings if they were.

This seemed hilarious at 1 AM when I was sketching this out, but just seems stupid now.

@erinhime83 also mentioned wanting something while she was doing work for the gang, and that it should basically be her normal wear but modified to keep up with the guys. Which makes sense but doesn’t leave me much to work with—women wearing pants was such a small minority, and only in relatively unique or rare cases that I couldn’t justify something like a Bloomer suit (also, I’m pretty sure Erin would think that a bit ridiculous, because it is) and really call it period. I could play fast and loose a bit, but then it’d be veering away from historical supernatural into…I dunno, fantasy-historical? Steampunk? Maybe not steampunk. Whatever, it would be diverting too much from the aesthetic we’re aiming for.

So I went with something…well, plainer. This could be a borrowed dress, this could be something she wears around the house, but it features a slightly shorter hemline (to make sure you’re not trailing fabric in the mud and giving your enemies something to grab at), no hoops (ditto, although she would be wearing petticoats), and…an apron. Why an apron? Well, to keep her clothes clean obviously. This is not modern-day, people usually own a few articles of clothing, and the boys can run around like wild animals ruining 1 of the 2 shirts they own, but she’s not going to ruin her clothes because she’s practical, damn it. It’s a lot easier to wash vampire blood off an apron than it would be to wash it off the whole dress. :P

The top part of the apron is completely optional; I’ve seen some aprons like that (the top part is pinned to the dress front), and I’ve seen some that are more like your typical apron. Collar and sleeves are likely linen or something detachable and washable, so not fancywork. (The sleeve caps were inspired a bit by this, which I thought was novel.)

The boots are fairly standard 1860s boots, and probably not terribly different from her regular shoes. I went with these because I liked the rosette at the toe, and I’m kind of liking the rose motif for completely stupid reasons. Erin mentioned something about calling Samson’s saloon “The Gilded Rose” as a sort of code name and so I kinda thought the rose might be the secret symbol of their gang (because…uhhh…roses have thorns…and thorns look like stakes…and stakes kill vampires…? Look don’t judge me, this is one of those stupid things that makes sense only to me, I just picture the rose with thorns attached because that’s more ~manly~)

Hence, you know, the little rosette brooch at her throat that I didn’t need to add but I did anyway.

Hair-wise, what her hair is like here is more typical for the period, but I thought it, again, looked practical and appropriate for fighting monsters. She’d be old enough that she’d be wearing her hair up anyway.

So yeah, apparently “keeping up with the boys” = “practical” in my book, and with this gear she looks a bit more like a domestic than a woman of society so I dunno, maybe “slumming it” counts as gang wear, I don’t know.

I just had this idea earlier today. I’m a garbage person whose life is slowly veering out of control so I can’t and won’t promise anything at all because I’m already a garbage person who’s promised too much already and become overwhelmed, BUT there’s another idea. Less conventional, but it might still work, with some modifications.

Riding habits. They’re by definition a bit looser than ordinary wear so she might not be burdened down with full skirts, and maybe, just maybe, you could justify (hidden) pants. No promises, obviously, but it’s apparently not out of the realm of possibility.

Mind you riding habits…still look dress-like, but they might offer less restrictive clothing and look prettier, if that’s your thing. Apparently female outlaws…really didn’t dress all that different for the most part—case in point, Belle Starr, who is seen here looking fabulous and not out of the ordinary for a woman of the time despite, you know, being a gangster in her own right. :P

Anyway, that’s about it. I can’t really theorize too much because she’s not my character, but these were the handful of ideas I had. Feel free to shoot them all down. :P
