7 Things You Should Never Do To Your Lawn
A beautiful lawn is a source of pride for any homeowner. It takes a lot of work and cares to achieve a lush and vibrant lawn, but it's worth the effort. However, there are certain things you should avoid doing to your lawn to keep it healthy and looking its best.
Tumblr media
In this blog, we'll discuss seven things you should never do to your lawn, and how MRB Snow and Lawn can help you maintain a healthy and vibrant lawn.
1. Overwatering: Watering your lawn too frequently can lead to over-saturation and damage to the roots of the grass. MRB Snow and Lawn can help you set up an irrigation system that delivers the right amount of water to your lawn.
2. Mowing too short: Cutting your grass too short can stress the roots and make your lawn more vulnerable to diseases and pests. MRB Snow and Lawn has experienced technicians that can mow your yard at the right height to keep it healthy.
3. Using dull mower blades: Dull mower blades can rip and tear the grass instead of cleanly cutting it. MRB Snow and Lawn's technicians sharpen their mower blades regularly to ensure a clean cut.
4. Using too much fertilizer: Over-fertilizing can lead to "burning" your lawn and damaging the grass. MRB Snow and Lawn's experts know the right amount of fertilizer to apply to your yard and when to do it.
5. Ignoring soil health: A healthy lawn starts with healthy soil. MRB Snow and Lawn can test your soil regularly and make necessary adjustments to ensure it has the correct pH and nutrient balance.
6. Allowing weeds to take over: Weeds can quickly take over your lawn and compete with your grass for nutrients and water. MRB Snow and Lawn can help prevent weeds from taking over with their weed control strategy.
7. Parking or driving on your lawn: Heavy vehicles can compact the soil and damage the grass. MRB Snow and Lawn can help you avoid parking or driving on your lawn, especially during wet conditions.
By avoiding these seven things, you can keep your lawn healthy, green, and beautiful all year round.
So, don't leave the health and beauty of your lawn to chance; hire MRB Snow and Lawn - Lawn Care Professionals in Rochester, NY. They can provide you with year-round lawn care services. Contact at (585) 363-0476 today to learn more about their lawn care services.

When Megan* discovered that her boyfriend, Sean, had overdosed on heroin in their Neenah, Wisconsin home, she called 911. Paramedics found Sean without a pulse, but were able to save his life. Afterward, Sean, who had been in treatment for substance use disorder, was greeted with a harsh reality—Neenah police were charging him with possession of heroin and marijuana. A few months later, he was charged again with simple possession. Based on these charges, the police sent a notice to Megan’s landlord, warning that their home was about to be declared a “nuisance”—and that, if the tenants made another 911 call, the city would levy fines on the landlord. The landlord, of course, promptly tried to evict Megan and Sean.
Neenah is one of an estimated 2,000 towns and cities in America with a chronic nuisance ordinance (CNO), a local law that encourages or even requires landlords to evict tenants based on minor infractions that the city considers “nuisances.” CNOs (also called “crime-free ordinances”) vary across cities, but generally target a common set of behaviors. The city declares a home a “nuisance” once a threshold number of infractions occur on the property. Infractions are disturbingly easy to rack up. They can include anything from arrests on or near the property to trivial aesthetic complaints like poorly maintaining your front lawn. Most CNOs will label a home a nuisance if it’s the source of what the city deems an “excessive” number of 911 calls. What counts as “excessive”? Some towns define a nuisance as just two or more calls to 911.
When an annoying person on a train talks loudly on their phone, they might get a raised eyebrow or a petty stare—but when a home is labeled a nuisance, the response is considerably worse. CNOs generally require landlords to “abate the nuisance”—that is, make sure there are no more arrests or 911 calls at the home—or else face fines or other penalties. For example, the city of Stoughton, Wisconsin designated a home a “drug nuisance” after charging four residents with simple possession of marijuana. The police urged the landlord to evict the tenants with a five-day notice, warning that if the tenants stayed and were caught with weed again, the city might seize the landlord’s property. Many landlords, including Megan’s, respond by evicting tenants, refusing to renew their leases, or pushing tenants not to call 911 for help. In some extreme cases, cities will actually threaten to criminally prosecute landlords who don’t evict. Even someone with little sympathy for landlords can see how the perverse incentives of nuisance ordinances make eviction proceedings nearly inevitable.
In addition, nuisance ordinances often target the most vulnerable. Domestic violence survivors, for example, are routinely evicted for calling 911 for help. Sociologists Matthew Desmond and Nicol Valdez found that nearly a third of homes labeled a nuisance in Milwaukee, Wisconsin were cited based on domestic violence incidents—and that properties in predominantly Black neighborhoods were more than 2.5 times as likely to receive a nuisance citation as properties in white neighborhoods. When vague laws like nuisance ordinances give police a wide range of discretion, enforcement is often racist. An investigation by the NYCLU (New York Civil Liberties Union) found that Rochester, New York issued nearly five times as many nuisance enforcement actions in areas with the highest concentration of people of color as it did in the whitest parts of town. New research (by your authors) also revealed that cities use chronic nuisance ordinances to evict people because of their disabilities. A mother in Baraboo, Wisconsin was cited after calling the police because her daughter was suicidal. Portland, Oregon labeled a resident’s home a nuisance because the city decided he had too much trash in his yard—even though his patient advocate explained that he couldn’t clean the yard because he was hospitalized for complications related to his disability. Police in Lakewood, Ohio informed a landlord that one of their tenants had called a mobile crisis center, threatening to harm himself. The landlord started eviction proceedings within weeks. A Maplewood, Missouri woman called a crisis hotline because she was suicidal; after the hotline’s volunteers sent police to her home to check on her and transfer her to a hospital, the city sent her a summons to a nuisance enforcement hearing for “generating too many calls for police services.” According to a lawsuit challenging Maplewood’s ordinance, at least 25 percent of the city’s nuisance cases stemmed from “obvious manifestations of disability.”
There isn’t a shred of evidence that chronic nuisance ordinances make towns safer or more orderly. But study after study demonstrates that nuisance ordinances are used to harass people—specifically people of color, domestic violence survivors, and those with disabilities—and push them out of town.
This all happens despite the Fair Housing Act’s clear ban on state and local policies that discriminate on the basis of race, sex, or disability. Because chronic nuisance ordinances hurt people with disabilities and heavily policed Black communities—where people are most likely to be searched or arrested, often for petty crimes—they violate the FHA’s mandate. In 2016, the Department of Housing and Urban Development even warned that cities enforcing nuisance ordinances against domestic violence survivors risked running afoul of the FHA’s ban on sex discrimination.
But the law is one thing—and people’s real experiences are another. Megan, her boyfriend, and other people evicted after overdosing fall into a Fair Housing Act loophole wide enough to fit Ben Carson’s dining set. Today, it’s well understood that substance use disorder is a disease: Federal courts increasingly recognize that people who are in recovery for a substance use disorder have a disability that is protected by civil rights law. But the Fair Housing Act runs counter to the scientific and sociological consensus by specifically and explicitly excluding “current, illegal use of or addiction to a controlled substance” from its protections against disability discrimination. The FHA’s carve-out means that people who are currently using, or who are in recovery but relapse, have virtually no protection from eviction under the federal fair housing law because of their substance use disorder. (Some advocates argue these ordinances still violate the First Amendment.)
With the FHA’s carve-out as cover, cities are even passing more blatant ordinances such as “drug house” laws specifically targeting people who use drugs. Nuisance and drug house laws sometimes encourage eviction based solely on arrests (not even convictions) and inevitably drive highly policed communities of color out of their homes. Although people of all races use and sell drugs at similar rates, Black and Latinx individuals are far more likely to be searched, arrested, and convicted for possession—so they’re far more likely to rack up nuisance points and lose their homes.
Worse still, nuisance ordinances deter people from calling for help when they experience or witness an overdose. An empirical study of nuisance ordinance enforcement against people who had overdosed on drugs found that, in two out of four towns studied, more than one in five properties designated a “nuisance” were the sites of a drug overdose. In a third town, more than forty percent of nuisance designations involved a drug overdose. Overdose deaths generally occur one to three hours after a victim has used drugs, leaving a short window in which to save a victim’s life. Paramedics now have the access and training to routinely administer Naloxone, a medication that reverses an opioid overdose. But if tenants believe they may be evicted if they call 911 for a possible overdose, they may hesitate to call for help until it’s too late—or they might lose their housing, leaving them more vulnerable to overdose than before.
The stakes are literally life or death. More than 70,000 people died of overdoses in 2017. What would you do if your partner overdosed? You’d get help, right? Well, what if you’d already called 911 “one too many times” and risked losing your home? If Megan hadn’t called 911, her boyfriend might be one of those 70,00 deaths—and yet she was rewarded with an eviction. In the middle of an opioid crisis that’s killed more people than guns, car crashes, or the AIDS epidemic, chronic nuisance ordinances force people to make impossible choices. And they’re just one of a hundred tiny ways that cities control populations and undercut health and safety. Because these are local rules, they are ripe for action and change, but it’s something we cannot afford to wait on lest we see the most vulnerable among us pushed even further to the margins and driven from their homes.

half-swedish, half-british. the swedish is on his mother’s side. he’s bilingual but thinks in english. only really speaks swedish around his mother. only child, and kinda put a lot of pressure on himself to be the perfect kid when he was young, but his parents are honestly, quite decent? and just want him to have a nice life, they don’t care if he isn’t successful or rich or anything, they’re honestly rather solid. (wow imagine having nice parents, a first for all my characters, im literally this meme)
grew up in peckham, a suburb of london. growing up, his mum was a model / actress / waitress who later retrained as a speech therapist and his dad worked in her majesty’s service at buckingham palace. his dad wasn’t allowed to tell his family what his job entailed but rory suspects it’s probably very boring and just involves a lot of…. logistics n security.
was bullied a lot at school. [cole sprouse voice] he didn’t fit in and he didn’t want to fit in. unironically wore a trenchcoat to school every day of his life. spent most of his lunchtimes in the library because it was his safe space. as a result he knows…. loads of useless information because 30% of his school years were spent reading anthologies on space and the vikings etc. would be good on a game show. obsessively recorded every episode of university challenge as a child.
middle-class and lowkey quite wealthy but rarely talks about money, one of those well-off people who still wears really old shitty shoes and only spends money if they absolutely have to
virgin who can’t drive
into star wars, not into the big bang theory. feminist. can’t watch horror movies
favourite film is where the wild things are. also loves the florida project. thinks kids are the sweetest thing and can’t wait to be a dad to some
has been musical for as long as they can remember. first picked up guitar because he thought it would make this girl esther who he was in love with like him, but he just ended up falling in love with music instead.
formulated several different bands as a kid but ultimately had to give it up cos he was quite controlling and got fixated on making a certain sound so it wasn’t really fun for the others. got into electronic music because it was something he could do basically on his own and keep tweaking until he got it perfect
always drumming their fingers or strumming invisible guitar strings. tends to avoid parties bc he has quite has specific tastes when it comes to music and doesn’t like listening to r&b for eight hours while people throw up into plastic cups.
a techno connoisseur. has been making electronic music since he was about twelve.
after his parents divorce, when he was fourteen, rory & his mother moved to run-down suburban neighbourhood, pittsfield, massachussets.
big into photography. he mostly uses a canon 35mm camera, but occasionally uses disposable ones when he wants that more rustic feel.
moving to the states, their photography became more focused on suburban neighborhoods and are often quite dark and cinematic (think gregory crewsden). here are some shots of pittsfield i really like which rory has on his wall [1] [2] [3]
falls in love 12 times a day. never had a girlfriend or boyfriend. gets sweaty when someone cute looks at him. flirting?? what?? would prefer to idealise them from a distance
gender??? hm. rory don’t really know where they fit yet, sometimes he feels like a guy and sometimes they dont feel like anything at all!! slippin out of his physical form into the spirit realm! isn’t really bothered, cos they think it’s a social construct anyway. uses he/they pronouns interchangeably, but currently feels like ‘he’ is more fitting. won’t necessarily pull anyone up on it cos he knows having an identity that’s constantly…. in flux.. can be annoying for others … and doesn’t want to be a burden even tho it isn’t at all?? rory internalises guilt
everything is socially constructed. mirrors let you move through time. the whole thing’s a metaphor. he thinks he’s got free will but really he’s trapped in a maze. in a system. all he can do is consume. people think it’s a happy game. it’s not a happy game — it’s a fucking nightmare world, and the worst thing is, it’s real and we live in it!!!!
has ocd. tries to let it affect his life as little as possible, but obviously it’s incredibly hard to control a compulsive disorder. was teased for it at school when other kids started to notice. he was obsessed with the number five, would wash his hands five times, count stairs i groups of five, he could only use the corridors in one direction and always had to keep his hands busy. it manifests itself in hyper-fixations (trains when he was a child – specifically steam engines – then later he became obsessed with space and the patterns of constellations, and now he’s obsessed with synthesizers) and repetitive behaviours like counting stairs. doesn’t really affect his social life at all, he can jst get a bit locked-on n hyper-focused sometimes.
has insomnia. barely ever sleeps. finds it hard to switch off from work / writing / gaming / whatever’s preoccupying him in that moment. he’s always awake at 5am and quite often sleeps in through classes but still gets really good grades because he’s very good at his course. rarely attends classes. prefers to work independently. doesn’t really trust his tutors are intelligent enough to be teaching him, and is particularly suspicious of the lockwood tutors. a music snob tbh
occasionally deals weed n pills when strapped for cash, but only 2 ppl he knows, and on a very small scale grass-roots level!! (so its ok???) rollerskates around campus dealing cos they dnt have a car. we love to see it
aesthetics: bed hair from a permanent state of slumber, calloused fingertips from strumming bass into the early hours and drumming into blacklit night, self-help books thumbed once and thrown beneath your bed, watching vine compilations until your eyes turn square, battered copies of choose your own adventure books, spliffs passed half-arsed across rooftops while light pollution obscures low-hanging stars
likes: techno, the webpage cats on synthesizers in space, allen ginsberg, vintage gramophones,  floating points, lcd soundsystem, marijuana, soft dogs that let you pet them, late-night strolls talking about the universe, independent films, cigarettes, herbal tea, gallows humour, long showers, brown eyes, tchaikovsky, dr. seuss, constellations, photography, late night jazz, vintage game boys and girls who could rip his still-beating heart out of his chest and use it as an ashtray. dislikes:  weddings, funerals, formality, button-up shirts that people actually button-up, bananas, hot coffee, social media, people who watch and play sports, rap music – especially of the misogynistic variety, indie wankers in wire-framed glasses that play ed sheeran songs at open mic nights.
plot ! with ! me ! i’d say all the usual “exes fwb hookups spiel” but rory… has never hooked up with anyone… i feel like a deer in the headlights of love……. so give me
study buddies,
people who are also into techno and are music snobs about it,
people who love all kinds of music,
people who are in bands that maybe rory’s recorded and produced stuff for,
people he actually jams with (he plays bass and synth),
unrequited crushes!!
actually i think rory had sex w delilah in the last version of this rp so if u want a hook up plot its possible just unlikely. they’d hav 2 be the driving force i reckon cos rory doesn’t really act on impulses like desire or anythin.... jst bottles that shit up !!! but yea we could do a spicy hook up plot maybs, depending on the person

A long and emotional post ahead that talks about drug use so you might wanna click away. I’m gonna try to put a break in this if you don’t wanna read it.
But I really urge you to read it if you can. You may need to see it.
So, I’ve talked many times about how I live in New York. I live about 45 minutes away from Rochester. One thing that is a huge problem here is heroin. Where you live, you may see only a handful of heroin overdoses a year. Here, we see about 5-20 or more a week, depending on who you know. I’m not exaggerating that at all. When you log onto facebook in the morning, the first thing you see are obituaries. Almost always, it’s someone who has died with a needle in their arm. It’s terrifying.
The longer this happens, the more I see it coming closer to our homes. More people who we grew up with, more people who we know. We hold an annual heroin/opioid memorial, our friends and family sharing their stories about drug use and losing their loved ones. Its horrific, but we all expect it by now.
Today, Hope Dealers BTC went out and cleaned the needles off of the streets in Rochester. In a single day, they cleaned up 2,474 used needles.
Tumblr media
That is not a stock photo. That is not a photo off of google. This is the truth. This is 2,474 needles found on our streets. This is more than 2,474 lives being ruined. This is the epidemic. This is our home.
I always say to people ‘If you don’t have a loved one affected by drugs, you don’t get to debate about addiction being a choice or a disease.’ But now I’m starting to realize that this isn’t up for debate. Each of these needles represents a life being slowly taken. Each one of these needles has been assigned to a person and their loved ones. We need to stop worrying about choice vs disease and start taking better care to make sure this shit doesn’t happen.
I’ve been around addiction my whole life. My dad, my mom, my grandfather, my grandmother... everything. Without even using drugs, my life was affected tremendously. I put my mother through rehab when I was sixteen. My step mother overdosed in my arms when I was 13. In 18 years, I’ve never seen my dad sober. I’ve lost friends, family, whatever.. you name it. I’ve seen it all.
This. Is. Real.
At this point, the epidemic is so bad that there has been talk of opening up safehouses for people to shoot up without using dirty needles, with people near by waiting with Narcan. Ever heard of Narcan? They shoot it up your nose when you OD. Its so common now, you can buy it at any corner mart.
So many people are tired of feeling out of control when the problem hits that they decide, instead of eliminating the problem, they’ll just find a safer alternative. That is the world we are living in.
They don’t teach you about this in school. Sure, they have people come in and talk about things like weed and alcohol but they don’t show you these things. These situations are right under your nose, every where you turn. You just don’t see it.
So, let me be clear right now. Drugs aren’t cool. It isn’t going to take away the pain. It isn’t going to solve your problems. It is going to ruin your life, your families lives, your friend’s lives, everybody around you is affected. Heroin and opioids are not a drug that you can ‘try once and see how it feels’ so don’t do it. Don’t put yourself through that pain. Don’t stick a needle in your arm to try to take the pain away when there are people all around you who want to help you.
Please, for the love of God, get help! Go home! Your family is waiting for you, drugs do not love you. We don’t want to see your face plastered on a memorial billboard for opioid abuse. We want to see you happy and healthy, walking down the street with a smile on your face.
Honestly, I don’t give a fuck if this gets zero notes, okay? Some people just aren’t ready to hear the truth but this is it. This is what we are facing right now. You don’t hear about it in the news, you don’t read about it online, but this is it.
Please, stay strong. Be the change. and shoot your local heroin dealer.

Ways to Protect Your Pets from Fleas and Ticks
With regards to pests, securing your pet is an unquestionable requirement. On the off chance that our textured companions are being messed with by ticks and bugs, they can't reveal to us that something isn't right. That is the reason the main advance in pet irritation safeguard is counteraction. By halting the bugs before they get into your pet's hide, you can save yourself a ton of time and inconvenience.
As per the ASPCA, flies and ticks are two of the most incessant pet consideration worries in America. Bugs are the most well-known outer parasite to torment our pets, and insect evacuation can be especially precarious (particularly on the grounds that these small bugs can hop up to two feet high and are pervasive in many conditions). Ticks are particularly difficult to see, and their nibbles accompany an expense – they can communicate a few sicknesses through a solitary meal.
With flies and tick season increase, we're assisting you with getting ready with these basic home bug protection tips to guard your partner.
Check your pet when they come in. On the off chance that your pet has been outside for an all-inclusive timeframe, examine their hide and check-in more subtle spots, for example, behind the ears. The speedier you eliminate a tick, the more uncertain your pet will get an optional disease from it. Tweezers are your smartest option for eliminating ticks without help from anyone else.
Brush your canine or feline's hide basically once every day. Glance cautiously around the space you're brushing, as this is the most ideal approach to detect a potential bug or tick issue.
Vacuuming your home consistently is another avoidance step you can take. Indeed, even on uncovered floors, these bugs can in any case discover some places to possess – ensure that it's anything but inside your home! Tip: take garbage cans and sacks to a garbage bin outside of the home following vacuuming.
Wash your pet's sheet material routinely in warm water and dry on high warmth. This may be probably the most ideal approach to guarantee that your pet's rest region smells extraordinary, yet hasn't become a home to insects and ticks.
Habitually washing your pet can diminish the likelihood they will draw in bothers and, obviously, makes them smell extraordinary as well. Warm water likewise relieves skin aggravations, making pets less bothersome.
Yard upkeep helps keep insects and ticks off your property. Trimming the grass and getting your yard free from leaves, weeds, branches, and trash is helpful to forestall issues with numerous sorts of bugs. Be careful – regularly subsequent to clearing a yard, bug states spread all over and get dynamic. Call an expert if the trash has been in a similar spot for significant periods.
Practice the above steps to protect your pets from bugs. If your Rochester homes in NY are infested with pests call "Town and Country Solutions" for safe control and extermination. Being a reputed Rochester Pest Control agency we will offer quality pest control services with a lot of perks.

Justice Dept. Asked to Examine Whether Swiss Bank Kept Helping Tax Dodgers WASHINGTON — The chairman of the Senate banking panel asked Attorney General Merrick B. Garland on Tuesday for information about whether Credit Suisse continued to help rich Americans defraud the I.R.S. even after it signed a settlement agreement with the Justice Department vowing to stop the practice. At issue is a retired professor named Dan Horsky, whom Credit Suisse helped to evade tax payments on $200 million in assets. A whistle-blower made federal prosecutors aware of Mr. Horsky’s account in the summer of 2014, and it clearly violated the terms of the settlement agreement that Credit Suisse had agreed to just weeks earlier. But the Justice Department under the Obama and Trump administrations never punished Credit Suisse for violating the deal, even though the whistle-blower’s information led Mr. Horsky to plead guilty to tax evasion in 2016. Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon and chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, asked Mr. Garland for more information about the Horsky account and anything else that might show whether Credit Suisse executives made false statements to Congress, to the Justice Department and to the courts when it said it vowed to cooperate with U.S. government efforts to force the wealthiest Americans to pay their taxes. The scrutiny around Credit Suisse’s private wealth management practices comes at a sensitive time for the bank. Last week it reported significant losses because of loans it made to a collapsed investment firm and said that Switzerland’s financial regulator would investigate the bank’s risk management practices. Regulators are also investigating a spying scandal and the sale of billions of dollars worth of investments that were reminiscent of the shoddy subprime mortgage bonds that led to the 2008 global financial crisis. “Public reports and federal court documents raise important questions as to whether Credit Suisse has fully complied with its plea agreement,” Mr. Wyden wrote in a letter to Mr. Garland. “The plea agreement is expressly contingent on Credit Suisse’s performance of all of its material obligations,” Mr. Wyden added; it “specifies that if Credit Suisse should fail to fully perform its obligations, the ‘agreement not to further prosecute shall be null and void.’” Should prosecutors decide that Credit Suisse violated its agreement with the Justice Department, the bank could be exposed to legal liability and more fines. Mr. Wyden asked the Justice Department for a briefing on the Horsky case by May 11. A spokesman said that the Justice Department had received the letter, but had no immediate comment. A Credit Suisse spokeswoman said that since the 2014 settlement, the company “has cooperated fully with U.S. authorities and will continue to do so.” Mr. Wyden also asked that the department help him verify whether Credit Suisse executives provided false statements to the Senate in February 2014, when they testified about whether the bank had stopped helping wealthy Americans evade taxes. Brady Dougan, then Credit Suisse’s chief executive, told senators that the bank had worked to be “100 percent compliant with the requirements around the U.S. taxpayer,” Mr. Wyden wrote. At the same hearing, the bank’s general counsel, Romeo Cerutti, testified that Credit Suisse was “really looking at whether someone is a U.S. person” in order to root out Americans who were hiding their wealth from the I.R.S. For nearly 15 years, Republicans and Democrats have taken part in a well-publicized campaign to weed out tax dodgers with Swiss bank accounts, focusing on UBS and Credit Suisse, both headquartered in Zurich. When the Credit Suisse executives testified in 2014, they were in the midst of negotiations with the Justice Department about a settlement over the bank’s treatment of U.S. tax dodgers. The two sides signed the deal in May 2014, in which Credit Suisse pleaded guilty to helping some American clients evade taxes and was fined a total of $2.6 billion. But it avoided even higher fines because it vowed to federal prosecutors that it had stopped the practice, would close “any and all accounts of recalcitrant account holders,” and would help the U.S. pursue other criminal investigations. The guilty plea and steep fine were rare in 2014, and it was the first time in more than 20 years that a lender of its size had admitted wrongdoing in an American court. But a whistle-blower emerged in July of that year and told officials at the tax division of the Justice Department and federal prosecutors who had worked on the case about an account that belonged to Mr. Horsky, a retired business professor who lived in Rochester, N.Y. and amassed much of his fortune by investing in start-up companies in the 1990s, according to news accounts. In September 2014, when Credit Suisse appeared in court to plead guilty, the judge asked both the bank and prosecutors whether they had any information that would affect the settlement agreement. Both sides said no. But the whistle-blower tip led prosecutors to discover that Mr. Horsky had hidden a $200 million fortune with the help of Credit Suisse bankers using offshore shell companies, court documents show. The arrangement lasted for months after the bank signed its plea deal. As part of the scheme to hide Mr. Horsky’s wealth, bankers put it under the name of one of Mr. Horsky’s relatives who lived overseas. When an account of that size changes hands, it is subject to enhanced due diligence, which includes notifying bank executives of the change. Mr. Wyden also sent a letter to Credit Suisse on Tuesday seeking information about when the Justice Department told Credit Suisse about the Horsky account. He asked whether the bank notified the government of the account before the whistle-blower came forward, and if not, whether that was the result of poor internal controls or “a willful decision not to report the existence of these accounts to U.S. government entities.” It is unclear why the Justice Department did not notify the court of the whistle-blower claim and change the terms of its settlement. The department would have had the authority to review the Credit Suisse case for possible breaches and further prosecute the bank. Jack Ewing contributed reporting. Hello, my name is Brenda Jiral and I am originally from Rochester, Michigan. I currently live in Hamilton, Michigan with my husband and two of my three children. I have been drawn to art for as long as I can remember. I see beauty in things that most people would simply pass over or dismiss.
Sunlight Breaking Through
Sunny Day
Like the way bright sunshine creates the most beautiful shadows; full of color and life. Or the multitude of color shifts that are in the human eye or a flower. I am frequently mesmerized by the dazzling light that bounces off a lake in the morning sun, and the range of colors in every rock and weed under the water’s surface.
Enchanted
I have been “making art” since I was a child, so, it was a natural progression for me to become an artist. I believe it’s what I was created to do. I studied fine art at college, but after three years, I decided to put higher education “on hold” in order to pursue my other dream: motherhood. I got married, had three beautiful children, and devoted my life to my family. The only creative outlet during those years were the many craft projects I would do with my children.
Dogwood Leaves
Once they were all in school, I was finally in a position to dust off my dreams of creating art and see what I could do with it. After taking the few watercolor painting classes that were available at our local art center, I was left to my own devices. So, from then on, I became self-taught. I poured over every book and video I could get my hands on at the local library, and watched every You-tube tutorial I could find. And I experimented: A LOT!
Sunlit Shore
My father was also an artist, and one of the things he said all of the time is that “art is 10% talent and 90% work” -Alfred M. Ponte.  That doesn’t dismiss natural, God-given talent, but rather, it puts the emphasis on what you DO with that talent. You can either sit on it and do nothing with it, or you can work your tail off to develop it and share it with the world. I’ve chosen the latter, I worked hard, and now I enjoy teaching others what I’ve learned. “Your talent is God’s gift to you; what you do with it is your gift back to God.” -Leo Buscaglia.
Pomegranate
For the past two and a half decades, I have lived with chronic pain and illness. To say that it’s been hard would be a gross understatement. I don’t share this often, because most people really don’t know what to do with that information. And honestly, I’ve been judged harshly all too often.
And I don’t share it to get attention or because I feel sorry for myself. I share it in hopes that if there is someone else out there, struggling with health issues, my story would give them hope. That maybe there’s a purpose for this struggle and something good can come out of it.
Resilience Sketch
Resilience
I don’t have one of those inspiring, miracle stories. I will most likely be in pain and ill for the rest of my life. And I have come to terms with that. This story is more about how art has helped me through some of the darkest days of my life.  Art has been a blessing in so many ways. I am so very grateful for the gift it is in my life! There have been days that, because of the pain or the endlessness of it all, I felt really down.
And rather than dwelling on that and allowing it to get out of control, I would go downstairs to my studio in an effort to take my mind off of the pain. At first, it can be like pushing a rope. I may not “feel” inspired or excited about what I’m doing, but I choose to do it because I know I need it. I may be just doing a little sketching in my journal or pushing some paint around on a scrap of watercolor paper, or whatever.
Trees & Hills
But at some point, I realize I no longer feel down. Don’t get me wrong, the pain is still there, but my heart feels a little lighter and I am excited about what I’m doing. And that’s when the paint has begun to work its magic on me. I feel joy and peace and alive again! And that’s when I remember: I’m going to be ok.
In spite of the health issues, I still try to teach a few classes or workshops per year. It’s not nearly as much as I would like to be doing, because I love to teach, but for now it will be enough. Maybe someday, I will enjoy better health and be able to do all of the things I want to do with my art, but for now, my life is full.
My Process And How I Got Here
When I was in high school, my art teacher expected a sketchbook full of drawings every term. How I dreaded that deadline! I really didn’t like to draw. I know that sounds crazy, since I am so passionate about All-things-ART. But I really didn’t like to “waste time” in my sketchbook. (That’s the way I felt about it then).
I wanted to do the serious art, not sketch! How silly I was back then; I cringe when I think about how much energy I spent avoiding my sketchbook. I’d wait until the day or two before the deadline and just throw it all together, giving only the bare minimum in order to get the grade.
Kohlrabi
Fast-forward to my early days learning to paint in watercolor. I would get so frustrated with my attempts to draw something in order to then paint it. All I wanted to do was paint, but my efforts showed my lack of drawing ability. I was reminded of my art teacher’s insistence on mastering the basics, and realized that I had failed to build a foundation before I started to “build the house”.
So, I went back. I began the discipline of forcing myself to draw at every opportunity. After all, I had a lot of time to make up! I put a sketchbook in my kitchen, so I could draw during breakfast and lunch and one downstairs, in my studio. I also put one in my car to draw while waiting for my kids to finish sports practice or orthodontist appointments. Eventually, I began to love to draw. I began to see the wisdom of building a foundation of this basic skill. Now, I don’t go anywhere without my sketchbook or watercolor journal.  I travel with it and record memories and I draw, draw, draw.
Driftwood
Pink Geraniums
My creative process varies on the project I am working on at the time. If I am looking for a new painting idea, I will often go to my sketchbooks and “mine” them for inspiration. I will also pour over the thousands of photos I have taken over the years for just the right image that speaks to me. I also keep a running list of painting ideas, and sometimes I fear that there won’t be enough time to do them all.
Like I said earlier, a lot of my paintings begin in my sketchbook or watercolor journal. Some of my favorite ways of drawing is contour drawing, blind contour drawing or continuous line drawing. I am drawn to this technique because there is a decisiveness and character to the line that otherwise wouldn’t be there. Rather than a sketchy line, which is hesitant and unsure, the contour line that I employ feels confidant and sure. And rather than going for a photographically realistic look, or an architecturally accurate line, this line expresses more of the freedom I’m after and attracted to in nature. It feels more organic and personal to me.
Single Tree
Continuous Line Drawing
Over the years, I have tried many different brands of paint and watercolor paper and I have no plans on settling on any one kind. I’m all about experimenting and exploring. In fact, I don’t consider myself a traditional watercolor “purist”, but rather, an experimental, mixed media artist, because I will never stop experimenting with new mediums and techniques. That’s what excites me the most about art: that I will be learning until the day I die!
Mossy Tree
Mossy Stump
When it comes to watercolors, I mainly use Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton paints. And for paper, I love Arches cold press and Winsor & Newton brand. In addition to those, one of my favorite discoveries a few years ago is mineral paper. I am so in love with this surface! It’s smooth and so receptive to watercolor and ink line drawing. I have found two brands so far: Yasutomo Mineral paper, which comes in only two sizes, and Terraskin Stone paper. (This one is a little more difficult to find, but what a gem!)
I also love to use Caran D’Ache Neocolor II water-soluble wax pastels, Derwent Inktense Blocks and watercolor pencils and a variety of water-soluble ink pens. And I can’t leave out my trusty fountain pen that I use for a lot of my drawings in my watercolor journals!
Yellowstone
In closing, I would like to thank Charlie at Doodlewash for allowing me to share my story and my love of art with others. And thank you, fellow-art explorer, for taking the time to read my story.

Former Pharmaceutical Company CEO Indicted for Role in Opioid Crisis
A pharmaceutical distribution company, its former CEO, and another top executive have been criminally charged for their role in the opioid crisis that continues to plague the United States. The indictments for conspiracy to violate narcotics laws mark the first time a major drug distributor or executive has been indicted on drug trafficking charges, according to prosecutors.
Charges were filed by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York against the Rochester Drug Co-Operative, the company’s former CEO Laurence Doud III, and William Pietruszewski, the former chief compliance officer for the firm. The company was charged on Tuesday with conspiracy to violate narcotics laws, conspiracy to defraud the U.S., and willfully failing to file suspicious order reports.
Doud has been charged with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and conspiracy to defraud the U.S. and was taken into custody on Tuesday for a court appearance. Doud plans to fight the charges, according to his attorney. Pietruszewski has entered into a cooperation agreement with prosecutors and pleaded guilty on Friday to charges of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and conspiracy to defraud the U.S., as well as a charge of willfully failing to file suspicious order reports with the Drug Enforcement Administration. Both men face prison sentences of life in prison.
The U.S. attorney’s office also filed a civil lawsuit against Rochester Drug Co-Operative seeking “penalties and injunctive relief” on Tuesday. The company announced that it has entered into a plea agreement in the criminal case and a settlement of the civil suit. The drug distributor has agreed to admit to the charges of wrongdoing, pay a fine of $20 million, overhaul its compliance program, and submit to monitoring by a third-party observer.
“This prosecution is the first of its kind: Executives of a pharmaceutical distributor and the distributor itself have been charged with drug trafficking, trafficking the same drugs that are fueling the opioid epidemic that is ravaging this country,” said Geoffrey S. Berman, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. “Our office will do everything in its power to combat this epidemic, from street-level dealers to the executives who illegally distribute drugs from their boardrooms.”
Millions of Opioid Doses Illegally Distributed
According to prosecutors, between 2012 and 2016, Rochester Drug Co-Operative illegally distributed tens of millions of doses of oxycodone, fentanyl, and other opioids to fill orders its own compliance department had flagged as suspicious. It is alleged that the company ignored DEA regulations and its own policies by selling opioids to pharmacies that were “filling controlled substances prescriptions issued by practitioners acting outside the scope of their medical practice, under investigation by law enforcement, or on RDC’s watch list.”
In four years, the company’s sale of oxycodone tablets increased by nine times from 4.7 million to 42.2 million tablets. Fentanyl sales by the company increased from 63,000 doses in 2012 to 1.3 million doses in 2016. During the same time period, Doud’s compensation grew by more than 125 percent to $1.5 million per year. He retired in 2017.
“Doud cared more about profits than the laws intended to protect human life,” Berman said.
Prosecutors allege that Doud and other executives deliberately chose not to investigate suspicious orders or report them to the DEA.
“We made mistakes … and RDC understands that these mistakes, directed by former management, have serious consequences,” Jeff Eller, a spokesperson for Rochester Drug Co-Operative, said in a statement. “We accept responsibility for those mistakes. We can do better, we are doing better, and we will do better.”

CHEMICAL FREE WEED CONTROL
1. Mulching
The best weed control company in Rochester covers garden soil with organic mulch to smother weeds. The layer of organic matter also prevents new weed seeds from germinating.
Good sources of mulch to control weeds in lawns are –
Wood chips
Compost
Grass Clippings
Straw
Just make sure to not use hay as it may contain unwanted seeds. You can also lay down ground cloth, cardboard, newspaper, or any thick material on the soil to stop weeds from growing through.
2. Crowding
Weeds can’t take shelter in your garden if there’s no space for them. In ornamental beds, you can plant groundcovers and perennial plants to cover up and shade the soil.
For vegetable gardens, the lawn care services in Rochester try either the wide-row planting method or the square-foot gardening method. In that way, the plant leaves touch each other at maturity. As the plants continue to grow, their leaves shade the bed and deprive weeds of sunlight.
3. Limit Tilling And Digging
Tilling (turning over garden soil) brings new weed seeds to the ground. Instead, try using the no-tilling method of gardening or Lasagna gardening. Then, you’ll disturb the soil as little as possible. If you’re planting new seeds, dig down only as far as you need to plant them.
4. Boiling Water
Pour a kettle of boiling water over any existing weeds to burn them. The water cools down as it runs off so it won’t hurt any of your healthy plants.
5. Vinegar
This method is great for drying out weeds. But you have to apply it multiple times with a long taproot like dandelion.
Ingredient –
1-gallon white household vinegar
1 cup salt
1 tablespoon dish soap
Equipment –
1-gallon garden sprayer
Protective gloves and goggles
Method –
Wear gloves and goggles and mix everything in the sprayer. Then, spray it directly on the weeds.
6. Corn Gluten
Corn gluten prevents weeds from germinating. But it can do nothing in weeds that have sprouted already.
7. Fertilize And Irrigate Carefully
Overwatering or fertilizing the gardens will only help weeds to grow. So, only give what your plants need. To provide water to the root of the plants, use drip irrigation, olla pots, or irrigation bags.
Give extra compost to only the heavy feeders like tomatoes, squash, and cucumbers. Feed a lesser amount of compost to crops like root vegetables.
8. Solarizing
Solarizing means covering an area of weedy ground with a heavy, clear plastic sheet. This method works best in the summer season when heat collects under the sheet and literally cooks the weeds. Leave the sheet in the sun for 4-6 weeks and remove it only when the weeds turn brown and dry.
If None Of The Methods Work, Call 716 380 0680
Some pesky weeds won’t just stop plaguing your lawn no matter what you try. If that’s the case with you too, connect with Gorksi Landscaping – the best weed control company in Rochester. Our gardeners are adept at nipping prickly weeds from lawns in no time.

The Worst Garden Pests in Rochester, NY
It won’t be long before we’re out in our gardens prepping for spring planting. It’s easy to overlook the multitude of bugs that see your garden as an all-you-can-eat buffet until it’s too late. Don’t bend to the will of the bugs. Take your garden back by identifying and fighting the worst garden pests in Rochester, NY.
1. Aphids
These tiny pests are hard to spot without a magnifying glass, but the damage they cause is definitely visible to the naked eye. Almost any plant in your garden can be a meal to these pear-shaped insects so an ignored infestation could mean dire consequences for your garden. Aphids feed by sucking the sap from plants and leaving excrement which can cause mold.
How To Get Rid Of Them
Since they’re so tiny, you can easily blast aphids off plants by spraying water. However, this doesn’t prevent them from coming back. Try using natural repellents made with chili peppers, garlic, and dish soap. You can also release natural aphid predators (such as ladybugs) into your garden.
2. Japanese Beetles
Source
These shiny blue-green beetles are a scourge to gardens. If there’s enough of them, they can decimate the leaves of your plants leaving them skeletal and defoliated. You don’t need to be a horticulturist to know this is bad for your plants.
How To Get Rid Of Them
Japanese Beetles are active in the morning so shake them off. Be careful, these bugger’s legs are like velcro and can stick onto your clothes. You can also use row covers to protect your plants during the beetle’s 6-8 week feeding period.
3. Ants

There’s nothing worse than ants in your plants! They’re probably the biggest nuisance to gardeners. Your garden could already contain thousands of colonies. They live underground and like to build their nests around the base of your plants so they can feed on the roots. They will also venture out and chew the stems and leaves off of immature plants. This kills the plant before it’s strong enough to withstand pests. If you’re planting from seeds, then you’re hand-delivering them a meal
How To Get Rid Of Them
The most common methods of getting rid of garden ants include:
Locate the entrances and pour boiling water down their tunnels
Add equal parts flour and borax to create a natural repellant on and around your plants.
Pour 1 liter of white vinegar directly into the nest. This will kill ants on contact but not harm plants.
4. Thrips
Source

They choose their targets by identifying light colored blossoms and then proceed to suck out the juices. These pests are also responsible for spreading viruses like tomato spotted wilt and necrotic spot virus.
How To Get Rid Of Them
Start by pulling weeds around your garden. Thrips move about by jumping or flying from one plant to another so by eliminating parameter weeds you can make your garden uninviting. Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
Since my father's fight with thyroid tumor - which coincidentally, he's triumphant - I've come to value that little organ that manages digestion. Obviously, growth isn't the main malady that can assault the thyroid - a reality I was helped to remember when I got an email from a peruser named Ronald concerning his girl who experiences Hashimoto's thyrioditis.
For those not acquainted with this condition, Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an immune system malady where the body's own particular antibodies assault the cells of the thyroid. Ladies between the ages of 30 and 50 are the essential target. Furthermore, to top it all off - there is no fix.
Inside Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
The manifestations of Hashimoto's thyroiditis can look a ton like different infections, and can incorporate tiredness, absent mindedness, wretchedness, coarse dry skin, moderate pulse, weight pick up or misfortune, stoppage and narrow mindedness to cool. But at the same time Hashimoto's has its very own portion particular side effects: trouble gulping nourishment or fluids and the sentiment of snugness in your throat. There might likewise be a knock (called a goiter) in the front of your neck. However, the best way to know whether you really have Hashimoto's thyroiditis is with hormone and immunizer blood tests that search particularly for the malady.
One thing you would prefer not to do is disregard these side effects. Left untreated, this ailment can prompt high LDL cholesterol levels and coronary illness, clinical dejection, low moxie and a higher danger of bringing forth coddles with abandons like congenital fissure.
In the event that you've been determined to have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, your specialist may recommend substitution thyroid hormones. In the event that you do leave the specialist's office with a remedy, fill it and try to take the substitution hormones. Why am I so determined about this when I ordinarily choose normal options? Since each cell in the body relies on thyroid hormones for control of their digestion.
Obviously, this isn't to imply that that regular cures won't help deal with your side effects.
What Not to Eat
What you eat can hugy affect Hashimoto's. Begin by disposing of stimulants and synthetics. A portion of the more clear ones are caffeine, sugar and additives. The initial two assessment the adrenal organs, causing lopsided characteristics all through the body. Additives and fake sweeteners like aspartame can make additionally pressure the cerebrum so it's basic to enormously lessen or dispose of your admission of these substances.
It's additionally a smart thought to stay away from some generally solid nourishments since they can discourage thyroid movement. These incorporate broccoli, cabbage, brussels grows, cauliflower, kale, spinach, turnips, soy, beans and mustard greens. Also, keep away from iodine-rich nourishments like kelp. While iodine is vital to thyroid capacity, it can have a negative effect in case you're experiencing Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
This condition has likewise been connected to celiac illness. Keep a diary of what you are eating for seven days to perceive how items containing gluten (bread, pasta, and so on.) influence you. In the event that it is by all accounts an issue, cut out any nourishments that contain gluten for multi month and check whether it makes a difference.
Handle Symptoms with Supplements
Shouldn't something be said about supplements? They can be dubious in people with this condition since numerous generally safe supplements can associate with your thyroid pharmaceutical. Check with your specialist before attempting any of the accompanying cures.
There is some proof that the Ayurvedic herb bacopa can help invigorate the thyroid. It's likewise useful for state of mind and perception, which can be adversely influenced in those with Hashimoto's.
Niacin can likewise help treat the elevated cholesterol levels that go with this condition. Simply know that niacin can cause flushing and even hot flashes in a few people. To keep away from this awkward symptom, have a go at taking the niacin with 900 mg. of weeds - and take it just before sleep time with the goal that any flushing will happen while you're snoozing. At the point when utilized as treatment for a particular issue like elevated cholesterol, the measurement is significantly bigger than ordinary - 1,000 to 2,500 mg. day by day. But since of the danger of liver aggravation at these dosages, therapeutic supervision is fundamental.
Different vitamins and minerals are likewise imperative. Calcium (1,000 mg. every day) and magnesium (200 - 600 mg. every day) enable numerous metabolic procedures to work ordinarily. Supplemental fundamental unsaturated fats (1,000 to 1,500 mg. three times each day) are additionally essential since they are fundamental for hormone generation.
One final Thing . . .
There are a few supplements you ought not take on the off chance that you experience the ill effects of Hashimoto's or even regular hypothyroidism.
Very oftentimes, individuals with low thyroid levels expend ocean growth or iodine supplements with the expectation that it will help. Be that as it may, while iodine insufficiency does for sure reason low thyroid levels, taking iodine won't help in case you're not inadequate - and by far most of individuals living in the created world get a lot of dietary iodine. Actually, over the top iodine admission can sporadically cause hypothyroidism. This is a great instance of "more isn't better."
Soy can likewise bigly affect the thyroid. At the point when given to individuals with debilitated thyroid capacity, soy items lessen the assimilation of thyroid prescription. What's more, some proof clues that soy isoflavones may specifically hinder the capacity of the thyroid organ, yet this may just be huge in individuals who are lacking in iodine.
At last, press supplements may meddle with thyroid hormone retention. Primary concern, it you need to consolidate regular and traditional drug to treat Hashimoto's, check with your social insurance supplier before you self cure.
This Just In . . .
It was awfully pitiful to learn as of late that performing artist Patrick Swayze experienced pancreatic disease. In any case, an auspicious new examination by the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York has discovered that Resveratrol - a compound found in red wine - can slaughter those lethal pancreatic tumor cells.
Amid the investigation, the analysts treated human pancreatic disease cells with Resveratrol, either alone or in blend with radiation. They found that the wine compound disturbed the movement of the tumor cells' mitochondria, the vitality delivering focuses required for cells to work. Resveratrol additionally debilitated certain disease cell proteins that foil chemotherapy by drawing drugs out of the cell.
When it was joined with radiation, the compound knock up the creation of cell-harming substances called receptive oxygen species - conceivably making the tumor cells more destructible. What's more, truth be told, the tumor cells treated with the blend will probably self-destruct.
In spite of the fact that this examination is primer, Resveratrol could turn out to be a powerful weapon against this dangerous sickness for the about 30,000 Americans analyzed every year. It's likewise turned out to be a viable malignancy safeguard for a wide assortment of tumors. Search for an institutionalized Resveratrol supplement. The regular dosage is 10 mg. every day. On the off chance that you are experiencing radiation or chemotherapy, check with your oncologist to check whether a higher measurement - 20 mg. or on the other hand progressively - might make your treatment much more compelling.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
Tumblr media
Something of vengeance I had tasted for the first time; as aromatic wine it seemed, on swallowing, warm and racy: its after-flavour, metallic and corroding, gave me a sensation as if I had been poisoned. (p. 31)
***
(Helen Burns) ‘. . . Life appears to me too short to be spent in nursing animosity, or registering wrongs. We are, and must be, one and all, burdened with faults in this world: but the time will soon come when, I trust, we shall put them off in putting off our corruptible bodies; when debasement and sin will fall from us with this cumbrous frame of flesh, and only the spark of the spirit will remain. . .’ (p. 49)
***
Such is the imperfect nature of man! such spots are there on the disc of the clearest planet; and eyes like Miss Scatcherd’s can only see those minute defects, and are blind to the full brightness fo the orb. (p. 57)
***
And then my mind made its first earnest effort to comprehend what had been infused into it concerning heaven and hell: and for the first time it recoiled, baffled; and for the first time glancing behind, on each other side, and before it, it saw all round an unfathomed gulf: it felt the one point where it stood -- the present; all the rest was formless cloud and vacant depth: and it shuddered at the thought of tottering, and plunging amid that chaos. (p. 67)
***
(Helen Burns) ‘If all the world hated you, and believed you wicked, while your own conscience approved you, and absolved you from guilt, you would not be without friends.’ (p. 58)
***
I had had no communication by letter or message with the outer-world: school-rules, school-duties, school-habits and notions, and voices, and faces, and phrases, and costumes, and preferences, and antipathies: such was what I knew of existence. And now I felt that it was not enough: I tired of the routine of eight years in one afternoon. I desired liberty; for liberty I gasped; for liberty I uttered a prayer; it seemed scattered on the wind then faintly blowing. I abandoned it and framed a humbler supplication; for change, stimulus: that petition, too, seemed swept off into vague space: ‘Then,” I cried, half desperately, ‘grant me at least a new servitude!’ (p. 72)
***
Who blames me? Many, no doubt; and I shall be called discontented. I could not help it: the restlessness was in my nature; it agitated me to pain sometimes. Then my sole relief was to walk along the corridor of the third story, backwards and forwards, safe in the silence and solitude of the spot and allow my mind’s eye to dwell on whatever bright visions rose before it -- and, certainly, they were many and glowing; to let my heart be heaved by the exultant movement, which, while it swelled it in trouble, expanded it with life; and, best of all, to open my inward ear to a tale that was never ended -- a tale my imagination created, and narrated continuously; quickened with all of incident, life, fire, feeling, that I desired and had not in my actual existence. (p. 93)
***
(Rochester) ‘. . . Dread remorse when you are tempted to err, Miss Eyre: remorse is the poison of life.’
‘Repentance is said to be its cure, sir.’
‘It is not its cure. Reformation may be its cure; and I could reform -- I have strength yet for that -- if -- but where is the use of thinking of it, hampered, burdened, cursed as I am?. . .” (p. 117)
***
‘Sir,’ I answered, ‘a wanderer’s repose or a sinner’s reformation should never depend on a fellow-creature. Men and women die; philosophers falter in wisdom, and Christians in goodness: if any one you know has suffered and erred, let him look higher than his equals for strength to amend, and solace to heal.’ (p. 187)
***
Young ladies have a remarkable way of letting you know that they think you a ‘quiz’ without actually saying the words. A certain superciliousness of look, coolness of manner, nonchalance of tone, express fully their sentiments on the point, without committing them by any positive rudeness in word or deed. (p. 195) [quiz = unfashionable]
***
Feeling without judgment is a washy draught indeed; but judgment untempered by feeling is too bitter and husky a morsel for human deglutition. (p. 202)
***
. . . There is no happiness like that of being loved by your fellow-creatures, and feeling that your presence is an addition to their comfort. (p. 209)
***
(Rochester) ‘To women who please me only by their faces, I am the very devil when I find out they have neither souls nor hearts -- when they open to me a perspective of flatness, triviality, and perhaps imbecility, coarseness, and ill-temper: but to the clear eye and eloquent tongue, to the soul made of fire, and the character that bends but does not break -- at once supple and stable, tractable and consistent -- I am ever tender and true.’ (p. 222)
***
Life, however, was yet in my possession; with all its requirements, and pains, and responsibilities. The burden must be carried; the want provided for; the suffering endured; the responsibility fulfilled. I set out. (p. 277)
***
Prejudices, it is well known, are most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilised by education: they grow there, firm as weeds among stones. (p. 290)
***
It is my way -- it always was my way, by instinct -- ever to meet the brief with brevity, the direct with plainness. (p. 294)
***
St. John continued: -- ‘It is hard work to control the workings of inclination, and turn the bent of nature: but that it may be done I know from experience. God has given us, in a measure, the power to make our own fate; and when our energies seem to demand a sustenance they cannot get -- when our will strains after a path we may not follow -- we need neither strav from inanition, nor stand still in despair: we have but to seek another nourishment for the mind, as strong as the forbidden fruit it longed to taste -- and perhaps purer; and to hew out for the adventurous foot a road as direct and broad as the one Fortune has blocked up against us, if rougher than it. . .’ (p. 308)
***
I discerned he was now neither angry nor shocked at my audacity. I saw even that to be thus frankly addressed on a subject he had deemed unapproachable -- to hear it thus freely handled -- was beginning to be felt by him as a new pleasure -- an unhoped-for relief. Reserved people often really need the frank discussion of their sentiments and griefs more than the expansive. The sternest-seeming stoic is human after all; and to ‘burst’ with boldness and goodwill into ‘the silent sea’ of their souls is often to confer on them the first of obligations. (p. 317)
***
‘Do you consider you have got your reward for a season of exertion?’ asked Mr. Rivers when they were gone. ‘Does not the consciousness of having done some real good in your day and generation give pleasure?’
‘Doubtless.’
‘And you have only toiled a few mon ths! Would not a life devoted to the task of regenerating your race be well spent?’
‘Yes,’ I said; ‘but I could not go on for ever so: I want to enjoy my own faculties as well as to cultivate those of other people. I must enjoy them now; don’t recall either my mind or body to the school: I am out of it, and disposed for full holiday.’
He looked grave. ‘What now? What sudden eagerness is this you evince? What are you going to do?’
‘To be active: as active as I can. . .’ (p. 332)
***
All men of talent, whether they be men of feeling or not; whether they be zealots, or aspirants, or despots -- provided only they be sincere -- have their sublime moments: when they subdue and rule. (p. 356)

Mom of 6-Year-Old Counts Reasons to Take Heart Health Seriously
Marla Burkhart’s story dates back to 2009, when she underwent an emergency cesarean section at Mayo Clinic eight weeks before her due date. Before the surgery took place, doctors discovered that Marla had a condition called peripartum cardiomyopathy, a rare pregnancy-related heart condition that occurs in about 1 in 3,000 deliveries and causes inefficient blood circulation. Despite the complications, however, Marla delivered a healthy baby boy named Noah.
Last year, Marla shared her story to encourage other women to make heart health a priority. She also became involved in Rochester’s annual Go Red for Women event and spoke at last year’s luncheon. But Marla wanted to do more to ensure that she was around to watch Noah grow and could be active alongside the now thriving kindergartner.
A couple years ago, Marla started seeing Lori Blauwet, M.D., a Mayo Clinic cardiologist. “She educated me about the long-term issues I may encounter as a result of my specific type of cardiomyopathy,” says Marla, “issues I wasn’t previously aware of.”
The advice she gave Marla is appropriate for anyone looking to maximize their health and live their best life. “I encouraged her to exercise on a regular basis and eat a heart-healthy diet,” Dr. Blauwet says.
Motivation to improve her health
That advice was pivotal for Marla. She began to explore which things in her life she could control to maximize her health, specifically her ability to lose weight and develop healthier eating habits.
“Over the last two years, I’ve really made an effort to include protein along with the vegetables in my diet,” says Marla, who has dropped over 100 pounds. She’s also expanded her physical activity.  “I’ve moved from just heading to the treadmill and the elliptical machine to lifting free weights.”
“Marla is a superstar,” says Dr. Blauwet. “She has made a concerted effort to adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle with amazing results.”
While lifting weights and working out is now something Marla enjoys, keeping up with 6-year-old Noah is her favorite way to stay active. “He loves being outside,” she says, “and we especially enjoy swimming together.” Gardening has also become a regular part of their summer lives. “Noah loves being out there on his hands and knees pulling weeds with me and laying mulch. He’s a wonderful kid.”
He’s also Marla’s motivation for continuing to improve her health. “I waited 40 years to have this special little boy in my life,” she says, “and I want to make sure I’m around for the next 40.”
Marla also stayed on track by recognizing that life happens. “If I had an off day, the next day was a ‘do over,'” she says. “It’s easy to fall off the wagon, but it’s just as easy to jump back on. At the end of the day, I control how much I move and what I eat.”
The voice of experience
“There are a few heart diseases that are more common in women, such as small vessel disease and coronary vasospasm, and some that occur exclusively in women, like peripartum cardiomyopathy,” says Dr. Blauwet. “These heart diseases are not as well known among physicians and the general public as the typical heart diseases that affect both sexes, frequently resulting in misdiagnosis and/or delayed treatment which affects outcomes.”
Marla’s personal experiences drove her to become an advocate for women’s heart health. “I read a lot of pregnancy books and had never even heard of peripartum cardiomyopathy,” she says, “so I want to raise awareness.”
Both Dr. Blauwet and Marla agree that lifestyle changes – even small ones – can have big results. “Eat a heart-healthy diet, exercise on a regular basis,” says Dr. Blauwet, “and do something just for you every day to honor your beauty and goodness within.”
