Happy Juneteenth! Come check me out at @weeksvilleheritagecenter . Repost from @blackownedbklyn . Come and check me out! Repost from @blackownedbklyn . Food has been connected to Juneteenth since the holiday was first observed on June 19, 1866 — one year after Union Army Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to announce the emancipation of Black people in Texas, one of the last groups of enslaved people in the U.S. to be freed. Black Texans celebrated a year of freedom with music and food, over time creating annual Juneteenth traditions such as red foods and barbecue. . Our Juneteenth Food Festival on June 18-19 honors the past while creating new traditions in our present. Produced by Jummy’s Picks by Black-Owned Brooklyn (our curatorial brand) and @weeksvilleheritagecenter, the event reflects the diversity of Black Brooklyn with more than 20 vendors offering cuisine from across the African Diaspora. . Taking place on the historic grounds of Weeksville Heritage Center — once one of the largest free Black communities in pre-Civil War America and home to many abolitionist leaders — the festival will also feature a marketplace of Black-owned cultural goods, educational activities and performances. To bring the vibes, we’ll have sets from a lineup of all-Black queer and trans DJs curated by @papijuicebk (6/18) and the legendary @soulsummitmusic collective spinning house and club classics (6/19)! . We hope you’ll join us in a space lovingly made for Black joy, freedom and celebration. . Day 28, Tuesday July 30, 2019
This morning was to begin with New York Cares volunteering program. I was to assist customers and pack bags at ‘The Campaign Against Hunger’. An organisation that is the largest of its kind and operates in Brooklyn. They provide food to an average of 30,000 community members every month. The food pantry looks like a mini supermarket, to give their customers an experience and choice as they select their preferred good and items available to them to take based on their needs and wants, as opposed to a pre-packed bag. As a volunteer my job was to facilitate the pantry,  and operations by providing customer service and assistance. I absolutely loved how the organisation functioned, they took in account the number of family members and were given points, that they could utilise as they pleased, the items in the pantry were tagged with points, that were in a way used as money. To see people go home with food, was a great feeling, some told me stories about how they planned a dinner with the family and some were new and wanted to know how they could go about the pantry and shop for what they needed.

Weeksville Tour, at the Weeksville Heritage Center was next. I walked a couple of blocks from the volunteer site. Weeksville is a part of the present-day neighbourhoods of Crown Heights and Bedford-Styvesant, which was an independent free-black community, named for James Weeks. Weeks had purchased the property in 1838, along with other African American investors, in order to create an intentional landowning community.

The Weeksville Tour, consists of the 1968 discovery of the Hunterfly Road Houses. The houses were purchased by the society  in 1973 and were restored in 2005, and were opened to publich as the Weeksville Heritage Center. Each house showcased a different era, the first house was from the early 1700′s, The newspaper that let to the freeman’s civil war, along with the freeman’s journal started here.
The second house was from the 1800′s, it was a two-story house, unlike the first one which was a single-story, much smaller in size and area. There were pocket doors, pockets windows, connecting rooms for ventilation, an attic and a chimney.
The third house was from the 1900′s time period, The Williams Family House, it was sold to Weeksville project and built in 1930, the found objects in the house were much more advanced than the last two, a sandwich maker, telephone, gramophone, radiator, clock, lamp, bathrooms were separate from the rooms, with a bathtub, a closet in the bedroom, bookshelf, skylights for natural light, stairs that went up to the attic and stairs that led down to the cellar, and a dog house outside the house.
It houses were restored and curated to the best of their knowledge, keeping them as authentic as possible, it was great to see such details and history still preserved with so much thought and heart.

The last activity was one that seemed a little random, and it would have never crossed my mind to explore. The HEMA longsword trial session, and to accompany me to this session was Lisa Vagnoni from apexart. Sword Class NYC was founded in 2009. It is the only school in the United States that offers both eastern and western sword styles side-by-side, encouraging exploration and discourse between the divergent forms. The class introduced me to techniques and concepts fundamental to their study of Liechtenauer’s Art of Fencing with the Longsword. I have to say it was definitely not as easy as it looked, to practice striking, the footwork, the technique, was all truly an art.
Unfortunately, Lisa could not make it in time but she waited for me outside, and we walked down to talk and grab a bite. It was lovely to hear that she was from a communication design background like mine. We exchange notes, talked about many things of interests, personal and professional and shared the new website she has designed for apexart, which looked amazing! It was a good night that concluded, that seemed like a very long, hot day!

Please join us for the opening celebration of I AM SHE on opening Saturday, March 2nd from 5pm - 9pm at the @weeksvilleheritagecenter by @ImaniniaSR in collaboration @distant_drummerrr. Viewers will not only see, but experience the artist's expression of holistic femininity through portrait works and connected charging stations, designed in partnership with set designer Alicia DeLarge. The archetypes being explored both visually and experientially include the Rebel Woman, Carefree Black Girl, Bruja, Wombman, Visionary, Lover, and High Powered Woman of the World. Stepping into motherhood encouraged Roberts to confront the identities that she holds true. Rearing a daughter required extreme investigation of identities and an analysis of what it truly means to be female, to be black and to be human in the 21st century. View the work at the opening reception featuring sounds by @classicnewwave and @youngwavyfox | 🎶 credit: “Woman” by Diana Gordon #supportblackart #imanishanklinroberts #iamshe #weeksvilleheritagecenter #brooklyn #brooklynart #blackart #nycart #nycartist (at Weeksville Heritage Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/BucGsAQBUIN/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1nnpise6cdi6f

Queenin’ at the premiere of episode 2 of #RandomActsofFlyness w/my sis @missadenikeo ....Terence Nance and his team of friends and collaborators created a show that examines the normalcy with which the everyday black experience is plagued with some sort of violence or trauma—be it physical, emotional, or psychological—at the hands of dominant culture/whiteness/white supremacy. I was extremely happy that Nance chose to have his event at the Weeksville Heritage Center, a community space that engages in work that centers blackness and the black experience not in antithesis to, but rather, as an alternative to whiteness. Do yourself a favor and check out Random Acts of Flyness on HBO, and in the meantime, head to the Weeksville Heritage Center and immerse yourself in all the black excellence on display... . . . #randomactsofflyness #terencenance #hbo #weeksvilleheritagecenter #blackness #blacklife #blackcreatives #blackwomen #blackmen #blackchildren #blackintellectuals #theblackexperience #blackexcellence #blackculture #blackblackandmoreblack (at Weeksville Heritage Center)
