Hong Kong (5/2/17 - 5/5/17)

We got to Hong Kong around 5pm and took a very expensive cab to Tai Wah Boutique Hostel.  The room was insanely small, so much so that we had to wedge our bags in between the wall and the bed.  

The next day decided to go to Macau after eating at the Michelin rated dim sum place, Tim Ho Wan.  Justin gambled a little and I roamed around the Venetian, which looks exactly like the one in Vegas.  We visited some of the other hotels and headed back to the mainland later  that night.  

While we were here we wanted to do a hike called Dragon’s Back where the views of the city are supposed to be amazing.  Unfortunately, the weather was crappy so we went to the History Museum and grabbed some drinks.  

Our last day in Hong Kong the weather was still bad because there was so much fog.  We did go up to Victoria Peak where we got a good, but foggy, view of the city and the harbor.  We walked around the area afterwards and I got a much needed hair cut.

In hindsight we should have done Dragon’s Back the first day because the weather was nice, the second day Macau since it was a Friday night, and then explored the city the other day but what can you do.  We enjoyed our brief stint in Hong Kong with it’s delicious Dim Sum, easy train system, and city landscapes.  We did not love getting asked non stop if we wanted to buy a suit or watch but hey what can you do.  On to Indonesia!

Amazing Borneo (3/15/17 - 3/20/17)

Last we left you we were leaving Cambodia in pursuit of Borneo.  For those of you who don’t know Borneo is an island made up of 3 countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.  We decided to we wanted to go to the Malaysian side and concentrated our travel to an area called Sabah.  

First up was the big city of Kota Kinabalu where we stayed at Masada Backpackers.  We had a short stay here because the following day we headed off to Palu Tiga or Survivor Island, where survivor was filmed a few years ago.  To our surprise we were the only ones staying the night at the resort which was so nice!  Before lunch we headed out to a mud pit, spa au natural and all.  It was a very odd thing because there were lots of leaves and branches plus you just float with no effort.  After getting dirty we cleaned off in the ocean and relaxed the rest of day, walking the beach and napping in hammocks.  Apparently, I was a yummy meal for the mosquito and my back was full of bites, not an enjoyable experience at all!  Even with that we had an awesome day ending with an amazing sunset.  The next day we took a boat trip to snake and sandpit island, honestly we were expecting more from these but they were just really nice beaches.  One of the islands was used for the competitions on the show though.  On the way back to Tiga we snorkeled in the crystal clear waters and relaxed before heading back to Kota Kinabalu.

We had one full day in Kota Kinabalu after Tiga, spending it shopping and seeing the port area.  The following day we got picked up to start our trek to summit Mount Kinabalu.  We used mountain torq as our guide company because they are the only ones who also let you do the via ferrata.  This hike turned out to be much more difficult than I thought it was going to be because the up just never stopped.  After 2,000 meters and 6.5km we had reached our accommodations for the night at Pendant Hut.  Even though it was tough we were still the first people to reach the hut, which was a nice feeling for my dragging ass!  Before dinner we got a briefing on what to expect for the via ferrata and went to bed early.  Unfortunately, other people at the hut were really inconsiderate and kept us up for a few hours... not ideal when you have a 2 am wake up time!  

Early in the morning we started our accent to 4,095 meters.  The ups on this part were really steep even requiring you to use a rope to help you get up in some sections.  We reached the final check point early so we hung out there for a while rather than at the top waiting for sunrise.  When we got to the top the sunset was spectacular and worth the climb!  Soon enough though it was time for the down which is by far the WORST.  We had a little break though to do the via ferrata.  It was awesome using the steel cables and carabiners to traverse part of the mountain.  Felt like a kid in a playground only much higher up!  After this we still had to go all the way down to the base of the mountain which I was not looking forward to.  Of course Justin seemed fine but my knees and feet were killing me. Despite much doubt on my part we (well mainly me as there was little doubt Justin wouldn’t make it) made it down in one piece.  After the mountain we went to Ranu, MK Hotel, to sleep our pain away and get some food.
