Da Vinci of our Time or a Kitsch Producer?

Detractors concentrate on “sentimentality” of his designs making them accessible to general public. Michael Kimmelman, the architecture critic for The New York Times, called the unfinished Oculus “a kitsch stegosaurus.” New York Post columnist Steve Cuozzo labeled the project “a self-indulgent monstrosity.” And Michael Graves, the late “godfather of postmodernism,” could not contain himself:  “Cala-fucking-trava! My God, what a waste.”

Accusations of cost overruns and technical problems have always followed every architect trying to “push the envelope.” Every Frank Lloyd Wright building, for example, with few exceptions, cost more than estimated and required expensive repairs. Nevertheless, Arthur Drexler, he former director of the Department of Architecture and Design at MoMA, called him “one of the most original architects in all of history, still new, still relevant.” The same may apply to Calatrava. It’s true, the Oculus is about to become “the world’s most expensive train station” with a price tag of 4 billion dollars. But, as Daniel Libeskind said, “someday people will revel in Calatrava’s creation and the controversies will be forgotten.”
