It’s definitely one of those days that no one will ever forget. I was a senior in high school and I walked into my first period Econ class to find the TV on and the first tower burning! Several months later after I graduated I took a trip to NYC and saw ground zero, which was about the saddest thing I’ve ever experienced. There were workers clearing SO much debris! It’s a site I’ll never forget. Fast forward 18 years and I’m showing my daughter the same spot, now beautified and memorialized, a heart wrenching and moving monument to the people who lost their lives that day. She’s still really young, but even she could feel the momentous tragedy that this was. I love how this city and this country have come together and turned this tragedy into something more than a tragedy. I’d love to hear your #911 stories. Those times of the year we are supposed to think of our lost ones who roam the earth again... Not that relativating makes our losses any easier, but since there are so many who share a horrible grief: The visit of another great historical city under reconstruction, which not long ago was completely destroyed, witnessing of the violent deaths of maybe over 20 000 innocent victims, touched me personally unlike many others. I feel a need to raise my voice for all those already traumatized women and children - mostly unregistered refugees from the eastern parts of ancient Germany - who died in the firestorms of the Dresden-bombings by the vengeful, malevolent hand of the Anglo-American allies at the end of ww2. The black colour of most of the grandious, historical buildings is still a quiet witness of the horrors of the firestorm who devastated everything in its way for days, on both sides of the river. Why this sadistic, rassist outwiping of a big cultural and historical treasure of not only Prussian history, especially full of innocent German families and refugees at that time? Why did it go unpunished? (Surely kept the registered numbers of civil victims down naturally, since who could ever account for all the bodies? ) Or was it "God's revenge", like all the grotesk memorials in the city are stating like a bad joke that becomes more grotesk the more you hear it?
