Of course they love it. Of COURSE!

In March a national magazine called Bob Jones University "The Most Square" university in the nation, and the university couldn't have been happier. In fact, it is a reputation they have been claiming all along.

That's hitting it "square on the nose." Dr. Bob Jones III, vice president of the school, retorted. "Their 'poking insult' is a very true description of Bob Jones University."

The unique distinction was published in last March's issue of McCall's magazine, which has a circulation of more than 8½ million, as part of a poll conducted among editors of 97 college newspapers. The survey was entitled "What the college catalogues won't tell you: student's-eye view of American campuses."

McCall's admitted that in the survey student editors were being "both whimsical and serious at the same time, and equally clear that their answers don't necessarily represent any profound truths about the nation's colleges. They merely re-fleet something of the reputations of those colleges."

But Bob Jones University won't argue with its new tag. It is already known widely as "The World's Most Unusual University."

"This institution is square and would have reason to be ashamed if anyone thought otherwise," Dr. Jones asserted. "We are glad the testimony of Bob Jones University speaks so clearly to an unbelieving world. No one ever has to wonder where Bob Jones University stands. Like the Apostle Paul, we are not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; nor do we hesitate to earnestly contend for the faith."

Continuing, he said, "If refusing to conform to the degraded moral conditions and the eroded social standards of this day makes us square, fine! We are pleased when the world recognizes that this institution is squarely aligned with the Word of God. Immorality, agnosticism and rebellion have no part in the curriculum at Bob Jones University. Contrary to what some people believe, it is possible to give students a sound education and keep them sound in the faith at the same time. This would be a different nation if some of these other schools got squared away in their thinking and returned to the foundation which Bob Jones University has never left.

"The tragedy in the McCall's article," he concluded, "is not that Bob Jones University was called square but that it was the only Christian institution so recognized."

BJU also was voted the third "most conservative" and placed third to the question, "Where do they (students) have the smallest voice?" Edging BJU as most conservative were Brigham Young University of Salt Lake City and West Point. Schools where students have a lesser voice were said to be West Point and St. John's (Annapolis.)

What was the student reaction at the local university to the survey? "The 4,000 students and faculty burst into thunderous applause at the announcement of the selections during a chapel service," university officials state.

A sampling of other questions asked by the pollsters include: Which college is most liberal? Which college has the dullest boys, the dullest girls? On what campus do you find the most drinking? On which campus is a person most likely to lose his religious faith?

In addition to the 8½ million subscriptions to McCall's, the magazine also had a full-page advertisement listing the results of the survey in several other publications including the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the Advertising Age. The combined circulation of these additional publications is well over one million.

Also, the story about BJU's selection as "the most square university" was carried by Associated Press, United Press International, numerous Christian periodicals, and many secular papers.

Typical of the publicity the university received is an "Editorial Comment' by radio station WESC in Greenville:

"McCall's magazine surveyed college newspaper editors throughout the Country, and the majority of editors voted Bob Jones University the "most square university in the Country. We have no idea as to just what the student editors mean by most square university . . but we would guess that most square means that the university will not tolerate any attempt by university students to take over and control the university. It means that students are not busy demonstrating for their right to use dirty language, or their right to exercise free love. It must also mean that the university will not allow students to pull a sit-down strike in the dean's office or to block the corridors of university buildings. It must also mean that the university is not controlled by a bunch of wishy-washy officials who are well educated but do not have basic intelligence. It would appear that McCall's magazine has paid Bob Jones University a great compliment by naming Bob Jones the "most square" university in the Country."
