There is more than one way to save ‘I love you’

Though Philip says ‘I love you’ to Lukas, we never hear the same words returned. Instead, here are the ways Lukas inadvertently returns Philip’s affections:

• *gives Philip a Polaroid camera* “You like taking photos, right?”

Trans. I take interest in your hobbies

• “They were going to take you away”

Trans. You can’t leave me

• “You better not leave Tivoli”

Trans. I need you here with me, stay

• “I’m not supposed to like you this way”

Trans. I can’t help my feelings for you

• “Get out of here”

Trans. I’m protecting you, please trust me

• “Please Philip, don’t tell”

Trans. I’m scared of losing you

• “She wants to blow me, you jealous?”

Trans. I wish it were you instead

• “Because I like you idiot”

Trans. You mean everything to me, she doesn’t

• “Because you know I like you”

Trans. I don’t want to stop seeing you

• “My dad’s in Poughkeepsie tonight”

Trans. Stay the night with me, be here

• “I said I wanted to get away from this”

Trans. I want you to make me forget

• “You’re amazing, I mean you’re awesome”

Trans. Not just at photography

• “I’ve never had footage this good”

Trans. I’ve never had someone like you

• “Where’s Phillip?”

Trans. I need Philip, right now

• “I lie to everyone else, not to you”

Trans. You’re the one true thing in my life and I don’t need to hide who I am with you

• “She’ll tell everyone”

Trans. I’ll lose you if people find out

• “I don’t want a girlfriend”

Trans. I want a boyfriend

• “I’m on the FBI phone”

Trans. I’ll do whatever it takes to see you and talk to you

• “Can we hang after?”

Trans. I need to see you

• “I don’t wanna talk about that right now”

Trans. You’re here and I’m focusing my attention only on you right now

• “I dreamt you got yourself a dirtbike”

Trans. I wish we could be free and do normal things together in the open

• “I had a dream about you”

Trans. I think about you enough during the day

• “Maybe it was déjà vu”

Trans. I’ve thought about this before

• “You wanna go to this party in Red Hook?”

Trans. I want to be seen in public with you

• “I kissed you in front of everyone”

Trans. I’m not ashamed of you, and I’ll prove it

• “It got you laughing”

Trans. You’re sad and I want to see you happy again
