Soul Calibur 6: How to Not Die

In honor of Evo Japan this weekend, here's a quick guide to defensive options in SC6. I hope you've all been practicing.

The important thing to understand about defense in SC6, and any fighting game, is that there's no option that does everything. Having good defense is about understanding what offensive options your defensive option counters, and which it loses to, so you can make the correct choice based on what you think your opponent will do.

So, you're in a rough position, your opponent has knocked you down, and now you have to defend yourself. In Soul Calibur 6, there is no additional delay added to moves while you're knocked down; you can act immediately, but any attacks you do will be while-rising. What can you do? 1. Stand Block: the tried and true. This will block highs and mids, which are the majority of your opponent's moves. Loses to lows, but most characters don't have high-damaging lows, and hardly anyone has a low launcher. This choice can have other drawbacks, even if you don't lose in these situations. You can be grabbed if you're blocking, but it's possible to attempt a throw break or duck on reaction if you're frosty. If your opponent attempts a guard breaker, you could take a lot of guard damage and still be at a disadvantage. This choice also doesn't allow you to counter your opponent the way other options do, unless they do something unsafe on block. But if you're not sure what to do, this does stop you from getting hit by a lot of moves. If you get good at instant blocking, you can even avoid the guard gauge damage.

2. Crouch Block: blocks lows, which are usually punishable. Ducks highs and throws, which could get you a launch. This is a very rewarding option to choose, but is risky because you can be hit by mids, which tend to be all of your opponent's launchers. Worth doing if you don't think your opponent is going to just slam their best move down your throat.

3. Guard Impact/Parry: This option tends to be used less after getting knocked down and more when you're simply at a disadvantage, such as getting your own move blocked, but is great for stealing your turn back. Successfully parrying isn't the end of the interaction; your opponent can't act during the stun except to parry back, so there's a rock/paper/scissors situation for you to guess if they will or not. If they do, they open themselves up to the universal A+B lethal hit. Pay attention to how your opponent plays this interaction, but this is still a great option to steal momentum back.

4. Resist Impact: Costs 50% of a bar, but gives you a ton of guard gauge back if you're successful, and can parry guard breakers/unblockables. Can even parry soul charge, but you have to do this before the screen freeze, so it's basically just for hype. Only used to get yourself out of a bad guard gauge situation because you don't get as much reward for parrying slower moves like guard breakers.

5. Reversal Edge: You charge up a big vertical and swing back at your opponent. If you're hit during the charge, you absorb it and gain a ton of meter, making this a good option for characters who want a lot of meter. If your opponent blocks the strike, you're plus. If the strike hits, you enter into a rock/paper/scissors cinematic minigame. A beats K beats B beats A. G blocks A and K but gets broken by B. Forward dodges A only. Sidestep dodges B only. Back dodges K only. If you tie, you go to round 2. In round 2, whoever initiated RE wins all ties. Simple, right? This is a very risky option for a ton of reasons, but is mostly useful for building meter against an opponent who's just mashing strings on you. This loses to sidestep and all guard breakers.

6. Soul Charge: The get out of jail free card. It has a 3 frame startup which you can be hit out of in some situations, but generally pushes your opponent away and powers you up while stopping the timer. There's really no way to stop your opponent from doing this. However, this resets things back to neutral, which might not be favorable for you, and this may also not be the best way to spend your meter depending on your character and the matchup. Use wisely, but absolutely use it. Do not die with 2 bars stocked.

7. Mashing: If you have a fast move, mashing out of bad situations is always an option, and a rather overlooked one in Soul Calibur. Good generic options like 2A or your character's fastest while-rising move, usually WR K, are staples here, but lots of characters have other fast counter hit tools that are more rewarding on success. This is meant to beat situations where your opponent isn't keeping their pressure tight, and is trying to go for more than they should, but loses to tight pressure without big gaps. Supers can be another good mashing option in some situations, since they become invincible after the screen freeze, which is usually partway through their startup.

8. Staying on the Ground: An option that most new players fail to utilize properly after getting knocked down. This loses to moves that can hit you on the ground, but since you can side roll, you can also evade a lot of those. A lot of players' offense after a knockdown is timed to hit you under the assumption that you will attempt to stand up as quickly as possible. If you simply don't do that, your opponent could easily whiff and potentially give you a big punish. Use this time to see what your opponent likes to do and force them to adapt to your defensive choices instead of you having to adapt to their offense.

Joker is very good at spotting continuity errors, for some reason. “Hey, this part doesn’t make sense. You already said that here. How ‘bout you say ______ instead?” Arthur never had the confidence or even the mindset to spot tiny errors, but Joker does; he’s the King of Gotham and he knows it.

“All right, that’s enough,” He would pick up your work, making sure to pick it up in the same order you laid it out so that there’s one less thing for you to do later, and he’d stuff it in the kitchen cupboard or set it down behind the TV… he’d just get it out of your way.

With your work out of the way, Joker would then stalk over to you and either toss  you over his shoulder and turn his back to you with a non-verbal instruction to get on his back, and he’d walk you to the sofa.
