Thinking about one of the core themes of Everything, Everywhere, All At Once and - not to do this but since it's kind of 'my thing' lol - my mind wandered with strings to try and connect it to Supernatural and how the finale truly just - just dropped the ball because -
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
Because the message of "there are an infinite amount of realities so nothing matters which is why everything matters" ties exactly to the struggle Dean was facing in the last season (though in the case of Supernatural there was someone to blame instead of the inherent randomness of the universe) and literally how both Dean and Evelyn spent most of the arc of the narrative fighting but in the end it wasn't fighting that saved the universe but love and kindness (and they were reminded by their loves who they just so happened to end up with due to the randomness of the universe - the thing that Chuck probably hates, it's his everything bagel lol). And the fact that Eveyln got to have that happiness in the ordinary and we’re left with the idea (or at least I was) that things are going to be okay and they’ll work out. Whereas in the finale Dean gets to that point of realization only for the ‘randomness’ of death to come and claim him or whatever in a way that kind of undercuts the journey (which we ALL have discussed to death lol). Like, we know Dean will die someday I think having it end like that, with the showing of it, was just meh. Even if they wanted to end it with a hunt and it’s the brothers sitting on the trunk of the Impala sharing a beer like “yeah we’re back to business even with Chuck gone”, it would have been a better button on the show then... that. Like maybe they will die during a hunt but that’s up to speculation.
And then there's the Cas and Wayden parallels, like the speech Wayden gave Evelyn in the alleyway when she was in the parallel universe where she was a famous movie star is a Cas thesis statement for sure. And also the reason why Cas's endgame should have been becoming human.
And like in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, it starts with a divorce and ends with a reunion once Evelyn sees past her own stuff and sees Wayden for who and what he truly is and realizes she's been ignoring what's right in front of her, preoccupied with her own 'unhappiness' and 'unfulfillment' and -
I didn't expect this to be an essay but to any SPN fans go watch Everything, Everywhere, All at Once because it is not only a good movie it makes the DeanCas brainworms v v happy

Hi Kat! my new favorite destiel fic is "beyond this illusion" by tiaevans87. Do you know any similar fics? Thank you :)
So, there is a lot going on in that fic, Sam has established a hunter hub, Cas is back and human and of course Dean is trying and failing to not be weird in the wake of Cas' confession. I'm not really sure which one you were particularly after
Dean being weird
Goodnight Kisses – ImYourHoneyBee   Ao3
Set 15x20 didn’t happen AU.  Dean was quick to tell Cas he loved him and wanted to be with him too when they got him back, although he wasn’t comfortable being with a guy, Cas’ compromise was that he wanted a goodnight kiss every night.  It doesn’t take Dean too long to realise that he’s a lot more fine with Cas being dude-shaped than he thought.
Word Count: 9k                                 Graphic Sexual Acts
Sunflower - Maxine (WinchesterPooja)   Ao3
Set S15.  Before they have a chance to take down Chuck, Jack brings Cas back from the empty.  But the empty hadn’t been idle in the short amount of time they had Cas torturing him horribly and taking the memory of his happiest moment when they saw it was giving him comfort.  Now while Sam and Jack are focusing on what they need to do to defeat Chuck, Dean is caring for Cas and coming to terms with what he said before his death.
Word Count: 29k                              No Sex
Dean being weird & Cas is human
tangled limbs – youreabadliar   Ao3
Set 15x20 didn’t happen AU.  Since Cas came back from the empty Dean has been avoiding him.  Sam has had enough so when he books motel a room on the way back from a hunt he books a separate one for Dean and Cas, insisting they talk, which Cas agrees with.
Word Count: 7k                                 No Sex
You Will Greet Yourself Arriving - an_ardent_rain   Ao3
Set 15x20 didn’t happen AU.  Things have been awkward since Cas came back from the empty.  Which is probably why Sam is forcing Dean and Cas to go undercover as a couple in a neighbourhood that is being haunted.  While they are there Dean may actually address what Cas said before he died as well as his drinking problem.
Word Count: 33k                              Graphic Sexual Acts
take the bones, begin anew – JustStandingHere   Ao3
15x20 didn’t happen AU.  Jack brought Cas back from the empty and left Amara to be God, and in the aftermath Cas decides to move out of the bunker, unsure of a new reality where Dean knows about Cas’ feelings.  However when he sees the house that Cas bought needs fixing up, Dean offers to live with him while working on it.  Along the way he deals with this knew knowledge and discovers some feelings of his own.
Word Count: 103k                            Graphic Sexual Acts
Sam sets up a hunter hub
(actually the one above also has a hunter hub)
Haunt Me Through the Night – KissingTinyFlowers   Ao3
Set 15x20 didn’t happen AU.   Grieving and knowing that if he goes hunting he likely won’t come back alive, Dean leaves the bunker and its memories (and Sam) behind, ending up in Sioux Falls, where he learns Bobby left everything he owned to him and Sam.  Giving the collection of cabins to Sam so he can set up a hunter network that Dean wants nothing to do with now that he’s retired, Dean rebuilds Bobby’s house to live in, while he figures out what to do with a life with no Cas in it.  But maybe he won’t have to worry about that.
Word Count: 83k                              Graphic Sexual Acts
the home we make together – vaudelin   Ao3
Set 15x20 didn’t happen AU.  In the wake of everything, Jack reverted to being a toddler and Dean moved out to raise him, not comfortable with the hunter hub Sam set up in the bunker, especially when he was raising a non-human child.  But finds enough clues to maybe get Cas back and succeeds, but Cas is sharing his body.  Something that is kept a secret from everyone except Jack.

The Night Before X

Chapter: 10/15
Rating: T
Summary: Ringo hangs around after the club closes and meets a stranger.
Tags: Smut, Slow Burn
Pairing: George Harrison/Ringo Starr (Background McLennon)
AO3 link here / Fic masterlist here
Morning seemed to arrive suddenly without much warning, Ringo pressed his head down onto the pillow and before he knew it several hours had passed. He felt far more refreshed than he'd been expecting, but the mess in the living room was enough to remind him of last night's antics. George woke up relatively soon after Ringo, enjoying the cups of tea Ringo made for the both of them. They didn't speak much, but Ringo felt there wasn't anything that needed to be said, they just enjoyed one another's company as they trudged through their waning hangovers.
The two of them recounted the night fondly over pieces of toast, not wasting much time before they headed over to reclaim George's abandoned attire. The host of the party, whom neither of them recognised, gave them a strange look as they returned the shirt and shoes. Apparently nothing major had happened with the police, seemingly they just wanted to scare everybody off. Ringo feigned being annoyed at the prospect, but in reality he couldn't have been happier with how the night had turned out.
Returning to Ringo's, George hopped into the shower once again. Ringo began clearing up, which consisted mostly of chucking everything into a bin bag which was left in the kitchen to be dealt with later. While he waited for George to finish he finally responded to John's texts.
sorry i didn't see these im still with george
you really are obsessed with him aren't you??
no comment
well good for you rings its about time you got some
thanks dad
you wanna come over later?? paul wants to get a chinese
sounds good to me
be sure to bring all the juicy details about your juicy date
it wasn't a date
was it juicy????
shut up ill see you later
It wasn't long after Ringo put his phone down that George had reappeared, fully dressed with his hair slightly damp.
"Hey, I don't want you to think I'm running out on you or anything..." George began.
"But you're gonna run out on me." Ringo completed with a grin.
"Yes." George chuckled "I had a great time though, really. Thanks for everything, you're an absolute saint."
"My pleasure." Ringo couldn't help feeling a little sad, knowing that they'd soon be apart "Do you want a lift back?"
"No, no, you've done more than enough already." George fiddled with the zip on his jacket.
They looked at one another for a few moments before Ringo broke the silence "Can I see you again? Preferably sober, but I'm flexible."
George laughed "Sure... I'm a little busy these next few days but I'll let you know. I've got your number."
"Alright well I guess I'll see you later, then." Ringo smiled solemnly.
"See you later." George repeated, turning to leave but stopping for a moment "Let me know how much I owe you for those chips."
"Oh, sure." Ringo nodded "They were alright then?"
"I've had better." George smiled "Next time I'll chose where we eat."
Ringo said nothing more, just widening his smile a little as George made his way out of the flat. Ringo tried to keep his spirits light, focusing on the day ahead. At least George seemed genuine about wanting to see each other again, Ringo could hold onto that for a while at least.
He headed straight back to bed, an easy way of making time pass before he could see John and Paul. Most of the remaining time he spent cleaning, just to make the time pass. Having a moment of weakness, he picked up the shirt George had discarded and brought it to his nose to smell. It only made him miss George all the more, but he tried to think of another things as he tidied up the mass of clothes cascaded around the room. It was a difficult balance of remaining positive without being too optimistic about his relationship with George, yet he didn't want to try too hard to be realistic and confront the fact that it was very possible that nothing more would come from their time together. It was hard to deny that their connection felt far too special for it to mean nothing at all, but Ringo had read the signs wrong many a time in the past.
Ringo hurried over to John and Paul's as soon as he could. They'd been living together for a couple of years now and it wasn't unknown for Ringo to stay there for several days at a time just because of how homely it would feel. Paul opened the door, happiness spreading across his face, stepping aside to let Ringo into their warm home. John was waiting in the living room, sprawled out on the sofa like a relaxed feline, hardly moving when he noticed Ringo other than giving a grin and a small nod.
"Here he is, man of the hour." John announced, Paul sweeping his feet up so that he could sit on the end of the sofa.
Ringo took a seat across, stretching his legs over the arm in a way he knew would be terrible for his posture "Feels like I haven't seen you guys for ages."
"Well you've been busy, haven't you?" Paul teased, the smile still spreading his lips.
"Tell us all about it, I know you want to." John waved his hand dismissively, but his expression was kind.
"Come off it." Paul laughed "John's been going on about you and that George bloke for days, he's been dying to know everything."
Ringo shifted himself to get comfortable "Well... What do you wanna know?" He couldn't help feeling a little shy when talking to Paul and John about his various relationships.
John sat himself up excitedly, blurting out with little to no shame "How big is his dick?"
Ringo spluttered into laughter "Jesus, John... Why would that even matter? My bottoming days are long behind me."
Paul joined in with the laughter "How did that party go? I know you were freaking out about it."
"It was alright in the end. Some bird tried cornering me and the police showed up and everyone scattered." Ringo recounted "But we still had enough time to enjoy ourselves, if you catch my drift."
John scoffed "We're not teenagers, Rings, I want details. Who's blowing who? Is he freaky? Is he half in good in bed as he is hot? I need to know!"
Ringo rolled his eyes playfully "You're right, John, you're not a teenager you're practically prepubescent."
"Let Ringo get settled first. There'll be plenty of time to spill the beans later." Paul spoke softly, mindlessly giving John's feet a massage as he spoke.
"Not over dinner I hope." Ringo chuckled.
"In all seriousness though, it's nice to see you so happy again. Isn't it John?" Paul pinched John's ankle to spark a reaction.
"Yes, yes, we're so happy that you're happy." John spoke as though reading from a script "Now I'm gonna ask you something point blank, and I need you to be honest with me."
Ringo's heart fluttered in panic "What is it?"
John furrowed his brows in an attempt to appear serious "Did he blow you in the toilets?"
"Uh..." Ringo laughed, unable to find his words "I don't-"
"Before you even try to deny it," John interrupted, holding his finger up "I saw the marks on his knees, and I'd know those marks anywhere."
"Why're you asking me then?" Ringo threw his arms up defeated "You think I'm gonna say no to a guy like that offering me a blowie in the toilets?"
John clapped his hands together loudly "I knew it! You absolute whore, Ringo, what would your mother say?"
"Don't act like I haven't caught you and Paul in the exact same position countless times." Ringo sat up a little, desperate to defend himself.
"Hey now, don't bring me into this." Paul interjected "Those days are long behind me."
John cocked an eyebrow, making Ringo snicker "Well now you're just lying, love."
The three of them remained relaxed in the living room for a couple of hours, every so often it would become playfully heated as either John or Ringo slipped up in their words. They never needed to have very solid plans when seeing one another, Ringo could happily stay chatting with them for an entire day and he wouldn't feel like a single second was wasted. It helped get his mind off his worries about George, although the conversations always seemed to lead back to him in one way or another. John's questions only became more prying, not even holding back when they'd settled down to eat some Chinese food. Throughout their conversations Ringo tried to gauge whether Paul and John seemed to like George, though there was little to go off other than their very brief meeting and how they'd respond to Ringo's stories. Whenever he'd started seeming someone new, their dynamic with his two best friends was always in the back of Ringo's mind.
"Well maybe one of these days we could go on a double date or something." Paul suggested, crunching on a prawn cracker.
"That'd be nice." Ringo mumbled, not bothering to cover his mouth while he ate "We haven't really been on a date though yet. Not a proper one anyway."
"But you've fucked him, right?" John asked with a grin.
"You know I have John, so why are you asking?" Ringo felt like throttling him sometimes.
"I just wanna hear you say it." John winked at him "Here I was thinking it was slutty to shag on the first date, but you didn't even wait. Was it just the once?"
Ringo glared at him, but it was impossible to keep up the act of annoyance "Are you trying to make me hate you?"
"I'm just making sure I've got the whole picture, that's all." John teased, Paul slapping him on the wrist lightly.
"I don't ask about your sex life with Paul." Ringo said far more harshly than he'd intended.
"God, I wish you would." John perked up "We tried this new toy the other day-"
"John, I suggest you think very hard about whether you want to finish that sentence." Paul raised both his eyebrows impatiently, it was enough to make John shut up, the only person who seemed capable of such a feat.
All three of them were laughing again soon enough, a moment of tension never lasted too long. Time flew by with none of them keeping track of it, and soon enough Ringo had to retire back to his own flat, which was now seeming very empty indeed. He chucked his keys onto the coffee table and sunk into the sofa, debating how he was going to waste the hours before it would be acceptable to sleep. He had to work in the upcoming days, it was coming up to two years now that he'd been employed at a music shop in the city centre, it was decent pay and only relatively taxing so Ringo knew he could have it a lot worse, but it definitely wasn't something he looked forward to. Deciding to mindlessly scroll through his phone for a while, it suddenly vibrated with a text message from George.
I know it's a little early to make plans but I'm here to make plans
what did you have in mind?
Ringo wasted no time in responding, he didn't see the point of pretending that he hadn't been staring at his screen as soon as it had sent, even if he hadn't been he would've no doubt picked the phone up immediately.
Dinner and then back to my place?
that sounds delightful
Is this Friday good?
very good
Perfect I'll pick you up It's about time I started treating you
im not gonna say no to that
A smile spread across Ringo's face, Friday felt like a lifetime away but the promise of this date would be more than enough to get him through the week.
My treat so you better not bring your wallet
if you insist
I do
any other orders?
So many But they can wait I'll see you Friday
see you then
Ringo let his phone drop onto his chest, letting out a happy sigh. Things seemed to be going too well, but he wasn't going to let his paranoia get the better of him, rather he was going to bask in this seemingly endless happiness that George brought to his life. Friday couldn't come soon enough.

The one where Mike talks about Wrestling, because writing plots for other people’s characters is easier.
fOkay, so I’ll be the first to admit that it’s been a while since I’ve actually seen more than friggin’ clips, but there are two things that have recently been trending, that have stuck in my brain:
John Cena wants and Undertaker match, despite the fact that Taker is getting too damn old for this shit.
And the current tag team champions are Bray Wyatt (basically some sort of yokel cult leader with a rocking chair who convinces everyone under him to rock beards) and Matt Hardy (Equally crazy, regularly changes personality by walking into a lake, pretty certain he thinks he’s some sort of God or something)
The reality is that Taker, as much as he is the original god-damned icon, and one of the longest standing people in this business, the reality is that he needs to retie. And frankly, he deserves to retire in fucking style. No amateur shit. No small-time stuff. Nah, he needs to o to hell in a balze of glory. Frankly, this would take msot of a year to set up, but it’d be good.
It starts simply enough. We get a few of the usual promos leading up to Halloween, through September and October. Weird jump cuts, random shots of Taker shoveling dirt, dragging the coffin, et cetera, the usual stuff. All hype, no clear knowledge.
Mean while, the tag team belt goes up in August, and is lost to, crap, I dunno, Brand new day in a 3v3 (Not like they couldn’t get a third for this, we’ll say Wray brings back Randy Orton under the Freebirds precedent). Anyhow. Hardy blames Wray for bringing in “The Serpent, whose energy corrupted our team” and Wray “Questions the convictions of a broken man.” By mid october, they’re regularly not helping each other in tag matches. Wray decides to put Matt’s convictions to godhood to the test, pushing him to fight the symbol of his failing resolve: A tag-team of Jeff Hardy and Daniel Bryant, doing the team high-flyer bullshit that makes and audience roar. This becomes a feature event at the end of september. It goes badly. Wray manages a win, but he has to go dirty to do it, forcing Matt to snap between his personae to save Jeff from a near-fatal blow at the last minute. Bryant gets to be angry about a bunch of things, and looks good while the audience watches him get a dramatic fake injury.
First week of October, Cena gets a match against Seamus, makes a big monologue (he loves making fun of that guy, seems like a good warm-up) and the match goes on, but is interrupted by Kane, in the classic demon mask (You didn’t think Kane wouldn't get to be the last big Taker story, did you?). He bombs Seamus, causing Cena to lose by DQ. He then grabs a mic. “You demanded my brother’s head at Wrestlemania,” he begins, growling in his usual ominous routine. “You demanded the dead man. You claim to rise above the hate. To be beyond it. Above it. You are not above death, Cena. Death takes all. Death...consumes us. Empowers us. In order to defeat Taker, in order to earn it, you must first fight the true Demon. Slay the demon, and you shall have your match with death!”
Dramatic? Over the top? Damn straight. Bray Wyatt, lacking a tag team partner, gos back into singles matches. He gets into some okay fights, but cuts promos going back to creepy shit, occasionally cut by taker. Everyone knows the match. Bane and Cena doing a cage match. Bryatt, meanwhile, seems crazier than usual. Mumblings about prophecies. About angels and devils. Claiming that the only way to defeat the false gods is to slay a Demon, and taunt death. Everyone thinks he’s talking about Cena. He’s not.
In a few weeks, we get our pay-per-view. A cage match between Bane and Cena. No interruptions. But before it, a new match. Daniel Bryant versus Finn Balor Tables. Bryant decides to wear his cape, Fina goes out in his more normal get-up (the classic paint was nixed because fighting Marvel and Disney over the Venom resemblance seemed like a bad play a month after the movie). Bray Wyatt, shows up, interfering on Bryant’s behalf, although Bryant clearly doesn’t want the help. Ominous masked figures, doing the weird cult thing, grab Balor after the count, running with the body. Wray knocks down the security trying to stop him, and just grins at Bryant. Cena fights Bane, and wins in the rather boring way he usually does.
In November, he gets another promo, where he explains/sermonizes that the demon’s blood was strong enough, after being tested by the dragon. However, it required a cleasning, holy power to draw its true strength out.
After a series of escalating matches where Bryant ends up defeating multiple former members of the Wyatt family, and removing their “brain-washing” by kicking their ass in the ring, Bray and Daniel get a PPV feud going. Bray “summons” his demon Finn in a new look during the match after the lights flicker, and then they fight. The new “Demon of Wyatt” runs amok, and then the match ends.
The new, Wyatt-endorsed “Evil Finn” persona shows up, with perfectly normal Finn doing perfectly normal face stuff, and demon Finn doing weird heel stuff. They never acknowledge each other’s actions or bouts.
In January, we get more Taker promo’s. Two weeks in, at Raw, Cena has a match, and it ends with the ring going dark. Taker emerges. He grabs the mic. “You have defeated my brother, and we are good to our word. At wrestlemania, we will fight.”
Cena hesitates. “We?“
Taker grins. “Soon, you will learn.”
Bray gets more ambitious, deciding to tag-team with Demon Finn for the tag championship. They win, but again, the stage darkens. Kane emerges, saying there can only be one demon. Only one monster. Bray agrees, and says the mosnter will fight on Raw, in February. However, each demon msut offer their flesh, to prove who is mightier. Bray spends time as Demon Finn’s “manager/handler” in the interim, while Kane occasionally shows up and power bombs somebody to prove his point. They get their fight. However, Kane, being a crafty, weird half-demon, decides to make it a tag-team event. “A demon should bring his sorcerer,” he declares, and who else comes out to confront Wyatt? Jeff hardy, wearing some bizarre, hell-fire outfit, chanting sorcerous lines. Hardy and Wray brawl. Finn and Kane fight. They lose the title, as demon-king Hardy distract Wray, causign him to lose “control” over Finn.
However, Wray has another dirty trick up his sleeve. The same masked cultists that kidnapped Balor appear, and take the weakened Kane and Hardy, overwhelming them with numbers, dragging them away, one of them helping a now-titleless Wray limp out of the arena, leaving the title in the air (this gives management a chance to use a 2v2v2 tag-team event to decide who should get the belt at a big pay-per-view or foreign show).
Another week passes, and another. We get a new promo segment. In it, we have video of Bray holding the mask of Kane, and the hair of Hardy. He rambles on, about having stolen the mantles of the great demon and the false prophet, and now only needing death’s own head for his collection. He claims to have stripped them of their falsehoods, leaving them to rot.
A new, clean Kane that resembles the corporate look, no mask, no growl, and a weirdly sedate Hardy appear on stage for a few weeks. Jeff and Matt go back to being a tag team again, while the “new” Kane takes some time off for now.
It’s almost March, we’re near to Wrestlemania, and people are talking. Where is Kane. Is Bray going to debut his plan at Wrestlemania? Why haven’t we heard from Taker all month?
Three weeks before the big night, answers come. Taker appears, alone, monologueing. Cena interrupts the monologue half-way through, because Cena never lets anyone else talk. Cena goes on about how he’ll take on the Undertaker, how he’ll fight and win, because that is what he does. Cena demands his match at Wrestlemania, and gloats about how he defeated Kane--and the lights darken, silently.
When the lights go back on, We see the ring surround by masked figures, the Wyat family’s strange enforcers we see Bray standing there, looking at the other too, smiling. He speaks about he too, has defeated the demon, and throws Kane’s mask at Takers feet, spitting on it for good measure. “You desire vengeance, dead man?”
Taker holds up two fingers. “Two coffins, then.”
Bray smiles. “I’ll bring one for you, your brother wasn’t using it.”
Wrestlemania. Half a year of build-up. Cena enters first, with his usual fanfare. He charges in heroically. He waves to the crowd.
The next entry is Taker, complete with the old entrance. The druids, cloaked and hidden, not seen for years, bring in the coffin.A brief montage of the dead man shows up, but he arrives at the ring confident. Angry. Ready.
Wyatt arrives, flanked by his cult. his champion, Finn, is pushing a different coffin, cast in what looks like iron. It seems to smoke. Finn is wearing what looks like a remodeled version of Kane’s face mask. It looks more like an Alice Cooper video, to be honest.
The match begins, Cena and Wyatt both charging for Undertaker. Taker holds up well--he still has the skills, but it’s two on one, both eager to put taker in the coffin. And then, right when it looks like Bray has the pin, Cena on the floor in pain, the gray coffin opens, and out comes Kane, charging over the ropes at Bray. Finn attempts to stop him, but gets knock to the floor. Kane alternates between fighting Bray and punching Taker, because if anyone is going to end Taker, it’s Kane, damnit.
This four-way clusterfuck lasts for over half and hour. Pins, chokeslams, stunners, lariats, the damn works. After an eternity of fighting, Cena and Kane manage to toss wray into the wooden coffin--and it breaks in two. He returns the favor, whipping Kane into the “stone coffin,” which shatters. Cena gets chucked through the Spanish announcers table, because it should never survive. Taker gets pinned by Wray. Cena pins Kane. They face each other. Wray, making a show over the fallen Taker, performs the Last Ride on Cena. Cean kicks out, attempts and STF on Wray. Wray has no choice but to prove himself as the Dead Man’s successor, forcing him to imitate the Tombstone piledriver.
After the bell is called, the four men slowly walk out of the Arena, happy to Retire the Phenom with a true potent successor. Bray, as tribute, starts wearing the dramatic leather from time to time. Finn occasionally uses the Kane mask during a PPV entrance. And both of these men get to retire to the hall of fame in style, knowing their legacies, of the undead cult-leader and his twisted demon-spawn brother, are celebrated and honored by some damn talented wrestlers in this generation.

Part 6
“We have a month till internationals,” Minhyuk groaned as he played with his growing hair. You were all sitting on yours and Hyungwon’s living room couch, watching a movie and taking a rare break from the rink. You sat on Hoseok’s lap, casually, snuggled in his arms. You played with the ring on your finger, twisting it around as you always did.
You leaned back and placed a gentle kiss on your boyfriend’s temple. “It’s also a week till Hoseok’s birthday.” You smirked. You twisted back to see the expression on Hoseok’s face change, he sat up a bit straighter and seemed a little bit more alert.
“I thought we agreed not to tell anyone,” he mumbled, though you found it adorable. You merely shook your head “It’s your birthday, it only comes once a year.” You reminded him. He scrunched up his nose in defeat. “I hate my birthday, I don’t like all the attention it brings.”
“Says Mr. ‘I’m the skating world champion’” Hyungwon joked, using his fingers as air quotes. “You live in the spotlight, celebrating your birthday is no different.” Your brother added. The other two boys nodded their heads in agreement. Hoseok only rolled his eyes “Whatever,” he reached over and grabbed his phone to check the missed notifications.
You looked over his phone and saw Kihyun’s name pop up. Intrigued, you read the message along with Hoseok.
“We’re in town, we’re heading over to Hyungwon and Y/N’s apartment.” A second later, another text came up. “Where exactly is it? We don’t have the address.”
Hoseok shook his head, smiling happily at the texts from his friend. You were beyond happy, you hadn’t seen Mia in a couple of weeks, not since Nationals. In reality, it wasn’t that long but it felt like eons since you’ve talked to her.
Hoseok typed in your apartment number and slowly got off of the couch, bringing you with him. “This is pleasant” He said, putting you back down on the ground. You nodded your head and turned towards Hyungwon. “Your French girlfriend is coming soon, Wonie. You better look nice.” You teased him. Hyungwon, blank faced, grabbed a pillow from the couch and chucked it at you.
You caught it and threw it back to him. Though your brother slowly got off his phone and made his way to his room. You assumed that he was genuinely following your advice to get ready for the arrival of his skater crush.
You and Mia had found a place to get away from the boys. The two of you were in your room, sitting on the bed and catching up. “It’s good that the two of you made up. I knew the whole situation didn’t sound like Hoseok. When he loves someone, he wouldn’t think about doing anything to hurt them.”
You nodded your head, thinking back to Nationals. “Yeah, I couldn’t be happier with the outcome though.” You looked up to Mia, whose short blonde hair fell into her eyes messily. “Hoseok’s birthday is coming up.” You told her. Her eyes perked up at the reminder. “Are you going to do anything for it? What about a surprise party?” You hadn’t ever seen the small girl so excited before. Her excitement, in turn, made you even more eager. You shrugged your shoulders, you did like the idea of a surprise party.
“He doesn’t like celebrating his birthday,” You grumbled.
“So? He’d love a surprise party nonetheless. Especially if you were the one who planned it.” She grinned. You smiled and nodded your head. “We’ll do it, only if you help with the planning though.”
She nodded her head quickly and enthusiastically. “I would love to! We could get everyone in on it and it will be amazing!” She cheered. She grabbed your hands, but let go when she felt the ring press into her palm.
“What’s this?” She took your hand back and examined the ring. “It’s a promise ring. Hoseok gave it to me the night after Nationals.” You said softly.
“I wish I had someone who loved me as much as Hoseok loves you, Y/N.” Mia sighed, looking at the small ring on your left hand.
You grinned to yourself, lying back on the bed. “You know, I know someone who would love to take you out sometime.” Mia’s eyes lit up, the same excitedness from before coming back to her.
“Who? Is it Minhyuk? Or Hyunwoo?” You shook your head and held up your finger “You’re very close” Mia thought about it for a moment, then a soft smile came to her face. “Hyungwon?”
“He doesn’t have the courage to say it but it’s very obvious. So… if you’re interested, you’re going to have to ask him yourself.” Mia laughed but continued to smile, a hint of red encompassed her cheeks.
“Thank you Y/N.”
You nodded and hugged your friend. Should we get back to the boys before they burn my apartment down?” You asked. She nodded and got off the bed. “When should I do it?” She questioned.
You didn’t actually think she’d be up for going out with Hyungwon. You were happy to know that your brother might actually get a chance at love. “Tonight.” You said. Mia grinned and opened your door. “I’m on it.”
Days went by quickly. Between practices and party prep, you had barely found a moment to breath. Not until a days before the party did you have time to finally rest. You had all of the party prep done and you and Hoseok were done with practicing for the day. Like most nights, the two of you were lying down in bed, cuddled up next to each other and enjoying the moments the two of you finally had to be alone.
Hoseok was scrolling through his phone, looking at pictures on social media. You looked at them with him. He would always stop and watch the videos with the animals. He would  smile and tear up at the especially cute ones. You found his reactions to be even more adorable than the animals themselves.
After a while, he reached a video of a baby playing with a small puppy. The baby kept on kissing the puppy and lying down on the dog’s back. You had to admit that it was one of the most adorable things you had ever seen.
“Do you want children?” He asked abruptly. You were caught off-guard by the question, but you weren’t entirely surprised that it came up. You thought for a second before responding. “Well, of course. I wouldn’t want any children right now, I’m just now getting into the professional skating career. But once I retire, I would love to have children.”
Hoseok squeezed you a little tighter. “I want children so badly.” He told you. He leaned down and kissed the crown of your head. “Our children are going to be the cutest babies alive. With your looks and my charm, they will be unstoppable.” He beamed happily. You chuckled “Well, our children will never go without feeling unloved.” Hoseok nodded in agreement.
“Our children will be surrounded by love. Especially since they will see that their parents are so incredibly in love and that they adore their children so much more.” He whispered.
You leaned back on him, envisioning tiny little Hoseok’s running around your house. “Do you think we’ll be good parents?” you asked him. “We’ll be the best parents in the world. Though, we have to actually get married before we start seriously considering children.” You forgot that you were still technically just dating Hoseok. You sighed, still thinking about your future children.
“My birthday is tomorrow.” He paused, letting the room get quiet before he continued. “There’s one present I want.” You hummed, waiting for him to tell you what he wanted. “I want to get married.”
You turned back to him, getting out of his grasp and facing him on the bed. “What?” You had to make sure you heard him correctly. “I want to get married. I know we haven’t been dating for very long, but if we truly love each other, it shouldn’t matter.”
You thought about it. He really had a point. If he loved you and you loved him, why should the length of how long you were dating matter. If you were already planning on spending your lives together, this wasn’t totally crazy.
You nodded your head, now smiling profusely. “Tomorrow?”
“Yes. We can go to city hall tomorrow and have a private wedding. In a few months we can plan a bigger one but I can’t wait any longer to call you my wife.”
You were on the verge of tears. You flung yourself at him and threw your arms around his neck. “We’re getting married tomorrow” you whispered. He hugged you back and soaked in everything that had just happened. You pulled back and looked him in the eyes “Just as long as we do it before later tomorrow.” You told him.
He cocked his eyebrow in confusion. “Why later?” He asked. You shook your head and laid down next to him. “No reason. Goodnight my love.” You smirked.
He smiled and leaned down to placed a kiss on your lips. “Goodnight Mrs. Shin.”
Minhyuk had taken Hoseok to a hockey game in the city for the day. It was Minhyuks gift to Hoseok and a way to get him out of the house while the rest of you prepared for the party.
You had told Mia about your wedding plans. Now would help you get ready and in the middle of the party, you and Hoseok would sneak off to city hall. And when you came back, a small reception would be ready for the two of you.
It was a last minute plan that would work way too perfectly. You were anxiously cleaning the house, hoping to make everything perfect before Hoseok and Minhyuk arrived. Mia took the dusting feather out of your hands and handed it to Kihyun. “We can handle the rest. A bride shouldn't work on her wedding day.” She grinned.
Hyungwon walked over and hugged Mia from behind. He rested his head on top of hers. She held on to his arms and continued to talk to you.
“I can't believe I'm giving my baby sister away today. Too bad dad can't be here to do it.” Hyungwon sighed.
You nodded. Your father had passed away a few years prior. He had been fighting kidney cancer for over a year before he passed. Your mother had continued to operate the skating rink she and your father had opened before you and Hyungwon were born.
You were thankful to have Hyungwon and you were even more happy to have him be the one to give you away.
He bent down and kissed Mia on the cheek before leaving to finish getting the apartment ready for the party.
After a couple of hours, the guests started arriving. Most of them were skaters from around the country. All of which had befriended Hoseok through the years. You had greeted each one alongside Hyungwon. Thanking them for coming. While you were in the middle of talking to a friend of Hoseok’s, Hyungwon got a call on his cell.
“This is he,” he said clearly into the phone. You turned towards Hyungwon. You didn't start a conversation with someone you knew with that greeting. Your brother went quiet, his face blank with shock. “Thank you,” He said, his lip quivered as he said it. He removed the phone from his ear and clicked the off button. He turned to you and pulled you towards his room.
“Hyungwon, what's happening?” You asked, scared by his strange behavior. He took a deep breath and held on to your shoulders. “Minhyuk and Hoseok got into a car accident.” Your heart dropped the second he spoke those words.
“W-what? Are they hurt? What's wrong with them?” Your thoughts ran a mile a minute and you couldn't ease them. Hyungwon brought you into a hug to try to calm you down. “They're both in critical condition. Get in the car, I'll let Mia and Kihyun know. We'll go to the hospital.” He whispered. You nodded your head and wiped your eyes from your tears.
You walked out of his room and towards the front door. You couldn't grasp any of this, not quite yet. So you quickly left the house and went towards your car to wait for Hyungwon.
You waited, scared and unable to think straight. The doctors and nurses poured to and from Hoseok and Minhyuks rooms. For over an hour you waited for news. You held Hyungwons hand and silently cried, praying for them to be okay.
Finally and nurse came out for the two of you. You couldn't tell what her news was going to be based on her facial expression. She took a heavy breath before talking.
“Mr. Lee is is stable and awake. He's going to be okay, but with the extent of his injuries, there is a very high chance of paralysis. His spine was severely damaged. We're waiting for our neurosurgeon to give the final call.”
“And Hoseok?” you piped up weekly.
The nurse shook her head “We've tried everything we could. He's awake but his injuries were so extreme that he only has a matter of moments before his organs start to shut down. We can bring you in to see him if you'd like.”
This was the worst pain you've ever felt. Everything crashed down around you. You missed numbly and stood up. The nurse took your hand and led you to Hoseoks room.
His eyes were hardly open, he was hooked up to large machines. His heart monitor ticked slowly. You could hear his labored, heavy breathing. You ran to his side and bent over him, tears rushing down your cheeks.
Hoseoks eyes opened wider. “Don't cry my love” he coughed out, his voice raspy and feeble. You sobbed even harder. “I can't do that Hoseok,” you cried. Hoseok raised his hand slowly and painfully he wiped your tears away. “I want us to say our wedding vows now.” He whispered to you. Your breath caught in your throat but you nodded your head. You cleared your throat and grabbed his hand.
“Shin Hoseok. You are the love of my life. You are my soulmate. My second half. My partner in life. I love you so much it hurts me. You have made this short time we’ve had together so meaningful and special. You’re the light that clears up my cloudy days. I have never been more sure about something; about our love and our future. And I…” You stopped, the words falling short in your throat. You hiccuped and wiped your tears again. “And I can’t spend the rest of my life with you.”
You looked to him, watching as a single tear ran down his face. He gripped your handly weakly, but the best he could. “Chae Y/N. You started out in my life a small crush I had on my best friend’s little sister. Then, years went by and now you’re my better half. I have never met someone that I have loved more than I love you. You take any doubts I have for this horrible world and you give me hope that everything is going to be perfect. I am so unbelievably lucky that I get to spend the rest of my life with such a perfect woman. I love you so much.”
You leaned in and kissed his lips, tears still running rapidly down your cheeks. As you kissed him, you heard the long, horrible sound of the heart monitor going off. You pulled away from him, knowing that his time here was over with. “No! Please, Hoseok! Please don’t let go!” You pleaded, hooking yourself to his lifeless body. Nurses and doctors ran in to stop the monitor. The same nurse from earlier gently placed her hands on your back and led you out of Hoseok’s room.
You fell to the ground, your knees unable to support the weight of your body any longer. Hyungwon ran over to you and picked you up. He carried you like a child and he held you like one until you stopped crying. The two of you were in the hospital waiting room, everything went silent the second your tears had stopped.
“This is real, isn’t it?” You asked Hyungwon, your head still in his chest. He nodded, not able to say anything. “Minhyuk is paralyzed and Hoseok is gone.” It became painfully clear to you exactly what happened. Minhyuk had told the two of you that the car that had crashed into theirs was a drunk driver. He wasn’t paying attention to the road and turned to collide with Minhyuk and Hoseok’s car. The drunk man didn’t make it through the crash either. His wife and children were in the waiting room with you and Hyungwon, crying their own eyes out.
You slowly got off of your brother’s lap and stretched your tired body. Your eyes stung from crying and your head hurt from dehydration. You felt entirely numb both mentally and physically. “We need rest, Hyungwon.” You muttered to him. He nodded his head and took your hand. His face was stained from his own tears.
No matter how alone the two of you felt right now. You needed each other more than anything.
“We’re introducing Chae Hyungwon and Y/N. Here to produce their final routine for the night.” The announcer called from the intercomm.
“Chae Hyungwon was originally Y/N’s partner at the start of the season until he broke his arm at the start. The late Shin Hoseok took his place, isn’t that right Sarah?”
Sarah nodded “Y/Ns partner and fiancee, the renowned Shin Hoseok passed away several weeks ago in a tragic car accident. Hyungwon volunteered to be Y/N’s partner again for this competition. I heard that the two of them used extensive training to cope with their grief.” Sarah said sadly.
“It’s a great shame as to what happened. We lost a legendary skater. Other renowned skater, Lee Minhyuk, was permanently paralysed from the waist down in the same accident.” Steven added.
Sarah hummed in response “A tragic few weeks in the skating world that’s for sure. Let’s welcome our two top skaters in this competition.”
You and Hyungwon got into positions. The both of you had heard loud and clear what the announcers had said. It was true. The two of you both used skating as a way to distract you from your overwhelming grief. It took a lot of work to get Hyungwon to the point where he could perform this piece. Every single practice you and Hoseok had had, he had been there, observing and watching.
He picked up quickly, but just hoped that it would be good enough. You wanted to do this for Hoseok. That was your final gift to him. “We can do this,” he whispered to you. You nodded your head, getting into place. “I know. This is for Hoseok.”
“For Hoseok.”
And so, the music began and the two of you poured your heart out for Hoseok and Minhyuk. Knowing that that’s the least you could do for two amazing skaters.
It was no surprised that the two of you won, though, the victory only felt bittersweet. You didn’t feel completely overjoyed, not the way you would have if Hoseok was by your side. You was so thankful for your brother, but he wasn’t your fiancee.
The medal you wore on your neck felt heavy and it burned your skin, like you didn’t deserve to wear it. The gold medalists of all the categories stood on the ice. You, Hoseok, and Hyunwoo stood next to each other. Bowing and smiling. Waving to your fans and waiting for it all to be over.
Hyunwoo leaned down to your ear “Hoseok would have been so proud of you.” He whispered sadly. You nodded your head, still smiling fakely and waving to the audience. “I know he would have. He would have been proud of you as well. I know Minny is.” You said back.
Hyunwoo nodded, depressed that he couldn’t share the ice with his best friend ever again. The three of you stood there, waving and seemingly happy, but you were all broken on the inside. Stricken with grief, but you stood there. Just for them.
You felt the beams of the mid spring shine on your face, creating a comforting warmth that you hadn’t felt in months. You wore the golden medal around your neck, the metal sparkling in the sun. You walked along the empty cemetery path, welcomed by the eeriness of the many loved ones. You continued along the path, counting your footsteps carefully to retrace your way back to the one grave you came to find. After a few moments of tireless walking, you reached the large slab of stone that reached for the sun gracefully.
You had avoided this exact area for weeks, too solemn to think about seeing where he laid. The gravestone had his name inscribed boldly on the rock, a reminder to anyone who saw it about who he was. You ran your fingers across the letters, taking a deep breath as you read his full name. You weren’t going to cry today, you promised yourself just that. You pulled the heavy metal off your neck and hooked it upon a groove on the tall memorial. You smiled to yourself, watching the medal wave in the wind, knowing that he too was smiling down upon it.
“I miss you” you began, fighting back the tears that threatened to spill. No crying.  You reminded yourself, but even that made you feel more of an urge to cry. You lowered yourself to your knees, gripping onto the cold soil just in front of the grave.
You can give in. You could hear his voice echo through your head, and as the words floated through your mind, you eventually listened to them. Tears spilled out of your eyes, slowly at first then all at once. As you sat there, crying, you thought of his last promise.
“You let go” you whispered. “You let go, but I still love you.”
