According to NPR, the commercial branding of whiskey as medicine in the United States dates back to prohibition when doctors were allowed to prescribe liquor for “medicinal purposes”— though, the idea of whiskey medicine seems to go back even further than that. During the 1918 influenza epidemic, even hospitals in dry states were ordering whiskey in batches as big as 500 gallons for coughing patients. Even earlier still, the entire existence of what we now know as whiskey was predicated on its use in medicine. In the Middle Ages, when grain was first distilled into alcohol in monasteries on the British isles, it was referred to as aqua vitae (or water of life). With roots in Arabic practices of alchemy, alcohol was considered to be a powerful medicinal tool. For centuries afterward, nobles and royals in pursuit of panaceas and elixirs of immortality turned to aqua vitae as a potential source, investing heavily in its production. This alchemical interest in whiskey is by and large the reason for its popularity on the Isles and elsewhere— for many centuries, especially as disease begin to spread through growing urban centers during the industrial revolution, it was considered a medicinal staple.

“When I was little, Papa [her grandfather] kept it in a mason jar with crushed peppermint and honey. It was in the jar all mixed together and he called it ‘medicine’, I’m sure because they were hard-shell Baptists and didn’t want anybody to know they had liquor in the house. He told me that when he was young, especially during prohibition, they would just use whatever alcohol they had and didn’t use any honey or peppermint. So, essentially, whenever they got sick they would just drink until they felt better or passed out. But, being as religious as he was, only ever drank it or gave it to use in small doses.   

Daddy also kept whiskey in the house for “medicinal purposes”— Mom would have never let it be there for any other reason. It was Jack Daniel’s— I remember the black label. They didn’t keep it in a mason jar and just crushed up peppermint or drizzled in a little bit of honey after the fact. One time when my brother was in high school, he and his friends got into the cabinet and stole the rest of the bottle. I remember a lot of drama ensuing but thinking it was really funny— it was still just medicine to me.”

As a child I knew it only as “medicine” and I drank it in small amounts, when I was sick with a cough, from a milk-glass coffee mug.  I remember, almost as if through a fever dream, discussions of visiting a “special store” or one of my parents  rummaging around in the cabinet for a tall bottle with warm amber liquid. My dad would pour the drink into the mug, mixed with water and honey from a bottle shaped like a bear, juice from a lemon, and crush shimmery peppermint sticks in the bottom. For some reason, it seemed like I was always sick around Christmas, so I associate the taste most with winter and with the sleepy giddy warmth I felt after taking it.

Whiskey Medicine Recipe

Ingredients

1 or 2 shots of whiskey 

a squeeze of lemon juice

crushed peppermint, if you’ve got it

a shot of hot water

Directions

Mix together in glass, mug, or teacup. Drink until cough subsides.
