“Oh my god, I can’t breath” Olive giggled, crumbling into Eliott’s lap. Her husband smiled down at her gently playing with her hair.

“This is serious Olive!” Eliott said, his smile melting away to a very strained serious one. His dark brown eyes studying her face, “it’s the greatest story ever told. Guy dates a woman, woman’s ex is a mob boss who is involved in an illegal fashion, mob boss’s daughter almost gets killed. Now the guy must use his skills from the years of being in the other four movies to get revenge on his girlfriend’s daughter’s father. Tale as old as time “

“I’m just saying they should have killed the guy and the daughter could have gone full ninja killer and taken out her father and his gang.” Olive giggled, wiping her eyes from the tears of laughter that had been rolling down her cheeks.

“That would probably have been a better movie… but would it also have bad dummy shots?” her husband asked.

“Of course” sitting up inspiration struck, “I have an idea!” Eliott watched her as she sat straight up. “You write the action and I will write the romance.”

“How much romance will there be if the daughter is 12 years old.”

“Well romance and character stuff.” she shrugged, “And you can add in all the poorly done dummy blow-ups you want.”

“I will,” Eliott said nodded, “But only if I can use sex dolls.”

“Like, Hard Ticket to Hawaii? Oh, wait! Now hear me out” Olive giggled scooting up so she was now straddling her husband taking his hands in her own. A goofy smile spread across Eliott’s face as he weaved his fingers into her own.

“Oh are we at the wait stage of drunk Olive?”

“Shhhh” she giggled leaning forward slightly brushing her nose on his, “But really, this is serious.” Cleaning her throat for dramatic effect she continued, “a Hard Ticket to Hawaii Death Wish 4 crossover.”

“Oh girl,” Eliott said, his voice hitting a higher pitch on his girl . Olive giggled pushing herself forward so she was resting on his chest.

“I love you.”

“No way really?” Eliott gave a fake gasp  “That’s sooo weird because you know what? I love you too”

“ So just be ready,” Kirishima said, prepping the gang, “She’s… the same but different. ”

The group nodded in unison, game faces ready for whatever was coming. And that something was slowly walking toward when in the form of Bakugou and Olive.

Right off the bat it was obvious something was off. While they were holding hands it looked unnatural. Bakugou’s shoulders were hunched and he seemed to be looking anywhere but at Olive who was talking in the city as if she had never walked down this street before. Her large hazel eyes taking in everything, mouth slightly open.

“Olive! Bakugou!” Kirishima said, waving. At the sound of his voice, Olive looked up and waved, a smile on her face as she looked over at the group of others standing with them. Her eyes intently taking everyone in as if searching for something that wasn’t there

“ Hello! ” she said as they both stood there awkwardly. Hands had been let go and now hanging at their sides. Limp as if unsure what to do.

There were a few more awkward nodes before Kirishima led them all inside toward the balcony seating, their usual stop. “T his place is amazing! ” Olive said looking around her eyes wide as she took in the atmosphere. Everyone froze as the blissfully unaware woman turned to her husband, “ How did you find this place Katsuki? ”

“ I didn’t, you did,” he said as everyone around him winched slightly. The awkwardness was so thick you could almost taste it, and it didn't taste good.

“Oh.” her voice soft as she bit her top lip looking down at her purple painted nails. She had found her polish that morning and had decided to try out the fun colors.

There was a long pause when Mina spoke up, “How’s Clare and Lilly and the others? ”

Olive blinked looking up, “ You know the girls? ”

“ Yeah, we have wine and Rupaul's Drag race nights. I think the last one we did was about a month ago wasn’t it? ” the last statement, more of a question than a comment.

“Uhhh” Olive shrugged unsure how to respond

“ She doesn’t remember it ” Kaminari mumbled to the little pinked haired girl. And again there was a lapse of awkwardness. Turning to Momo from across the table Olive pointed to her shirt.

“ I love your shirt so cute! ” she said, stumbling slightly over her words. Momo lit up pointing to the shirt that Olive had gotten Momo for the hero’s birthday. The words “Females are strong as hell” in English was written in script across the chest. She had gotten it because she always told Momo, who was the 4th hero and number 1 female, that she was the most badass out of everyone (and that ranking didn’t mean shit). Also, they were both addicted to “Unbreakable Kimmy Shimitt”

“Thank you, I’m Momo '' the dark-haired hero said, noticing how much Olive was struggling trying to piece together who was who. Before they had come Momo and her fiancee Shoto Todoroki had decided to treat her like they had met for the first time. “ and this is Shodo, my fiancee .”

“I’m Mina! ” Mina said quickly and everyone else followed suit with a quick round of introductions.

“Yeah, I have pictures ” Olive lit up at the introduction. “The fair.”

“What picture did you have ?” Momo asked, leaning forward.

“This one of the fair? ” Olive said, holding up the phone leaning over the table to hand her the phone. Watching them Kirishima chuckled leaning toward Bakugou.

“Why are they across the table from each other?”

Bakugou shrugged, rolling his eyes, not shocked by the poor seating choices. After coordinating this whole night was he really now in charge of seating as well?

“Oh, that was so fun. ” Momo smiled looking at the photo. Memories of her trip to the US where Olive had given her the grand tour.

“ Oh is that the American Fair? What other pictures do you have? Do you have the one from when we all went to that spa? Do you have the one of us in those masks making the peace sign? What about... ” Mina was bursting with questions going way too fast for Olive to keep up. The poor girl’s smile looked slightly strained as she tried to look like she was understanding more than every other word from the excited pink haired girl.

“You’re going to fast for her! ” Bakugou barked out noticing the very overwhelmed look in his wife’s eyes, “ She's still learning .”

“Oh sorry Olive” Mina whispered looking down at her hands feeling her face flush.

“Don’t yell at her.” Olive said good naturally in English nudging Bakugou playfully with her shoulder. The blonde looked like the wind had been knocked out of him her words cutting him harder than he wanted to admit. “Which picture did you want to see Mina?”

Before the pink girl could respond the waiter came up to introduce herself and take drink orders.  A look of desperation came over Olive’s face as she looked down at the menu. Anxiety quickly flooded her system. The social pressure of trying to be normal while navigating a language she was still learning was extremely stressful. And this was besides the fact she had no idea what was good here or what she would like to order. Did she had a regular drink here? If so, what was it?

Desperately she looked down at the Japanese characters as if they would suddenly jump out and give her all the answers.

A large hand slammed over the menu making Olive lookup. Bakugou’s intense red gaze met her hazel one.

“I’ll order for you,” he said softly in English, more of a statement than an offer. His red eyes studding her as if reading all her thoughts. She smiled softly at him making him flush slightly looking away from her to the waiter ordering quickly.

“Thank you” she whispered, her hand gently brushing against his arm. Her fingertips leave a trail of goosebumps in their wake. It felt like her touch was fire.

Quickly he rubbed his arm as if he could put out the flames that were licking at his skin.

Fuck. He had it bad.

“Yeah well you looked so lost.” he grumbled looking away turning to Kirishima who was intently watching the conversation with the most annoying smile on his face. “ What are you looking at? ” Struggling Kirishima’s annoying smirk didn’t fade but he offered no explanation for his expression.

Typical.

Lucky for Bakugou the conversation shifted to other things. Work, life, weird food Kaminari had tried last week on his trip to Bermuda.

Olive quickly picked up her conversation with Momo about the place she was looking into for her wedding and life in general. Since they were - as Kirishima had pointed out- sitting across the table from each other, Olive had to basically lean up over the top of the table to shout of the music that was playing in the background.

Bakugou couldn’t help but frown watching as his wife literally looked like she was crawling over. Her eyes bright as the two talked. It was the most enthusiastic she had been in a long time.

“If you want to be with her so bad go sit over there, ” he said, it came out much harder than he had meant it to be. But he was annoyed and sometimes -ok most times- had a hard time masking his emotions. Olive blinked looking up at him confused for a moment before getting up from her seat moving over - much to Momo’s delight- to sit down next to her. He could see her pulling out her phone probably to show off pictures of Dolemite. Or maybe to ask more about the people who littered it. He could tell she felt awkward about asking him those questions. Knowing it hurt.

But also he wanted her next to him. To feel her next to him. To know she was still there with him.

“ OMG I love this song !” Mina squealed as a song came on.

“ Let’s dance, ” Momo said, getting up knowing Olive loved to dance. Normally she was the one dragging the girls onto the floor. At the promise of dancing Olive lit up as she stood to follow them. However before she left she glanced over at Bakugou, as if checking in with him.

“Why are you looking at me? Go!”

Olive flashed him a wide smile before following the girls into the crowd. The other two girls grabbed her laughing as they swayed with the music. Not having to talk just laughing and enjoying each other’s company. The universal girl code of good music and alcohol.

Three songs later and she was slowing down, taking a moment to breathe looking around the dance floor.

And that was when she thought she saw him.

Long blonde hair pulled up in a man bun. A basic flannel shirt, on the shorter side with broad shoulders leaning on the bar, his back to her.

Eliott

Her brain zoned in on it, for a second she forgot he was dead. Forgot he was gone.

That first month after his death she saw him everywhere. Heard his laugh. Sensed his presence. Slowly it had gotten better. His presence slowly fading from the bright sun of the day to the dark of night or in those first moments when she was waking up. And even more recently his presence had slowly faded. Her brain too busy trying to understand this whole new life she was living to focus on the loss.

But as the man turned and she saw it was clearly not him something washed over her. Hit her right in the face crushing her inside.

She didn’t even realize she was crying until Momo came up and hugged her.

“What happened?” she whispered in English as Olive raised her hands to her face trying to stop the tears. But they wouldn’t stop. Her chest so heavy it felt like her whole body was filled with sadness and the only way out was through her tears.

“I just… I thought… I saw Eliott.” she hiccuped, “I’m sorry… I’m sorry.”

“Why are you sorry?” Momo asked, frowning as she studied Olive. Mina, whose English was not as good, hovered around them both rubbing Olive’s shoulder trying to understand what had happened.

“I just… can't stop crying.” Olive sobbed trying to take deep breaths to gain control of herself.

“It’s been a lot for you.” Momo said, “come here” she hugged the girl for a moment before pulling away.

“ It’s ok to miss someone. ” Mina said, holding out a napkin she had grabbed from the bar.

“Yeah and for you it’s been very recent.”  Monmo added nodding

“I just feel guilty… Katsuki.” Olive fumbled through the words trying to explain all the emotions that were swerling like some muddy concoction in her chest.

“ Oh Bakugou can get over it. ” Momo said, waving her hand trying to keep her words simple so both girls could understand what she was saying, “ he gets all moody but he really cares about you. ”

“ Yeah, the first time I met you he was so… relaxed. ” Mina said, trying to find the right words, “ None of us had ever seen him that way before. ”

“ He was happy. ” Momo nodded, “ He will be fine, you need to focus on yourself.”

From across the bar Bakugou had lost sight of where the girls had gone. The crowd was getting thicker and thicker as the night had dragged on. He knew Olive would be safe with Momo and Mina there but still, he wanted to make sure she was ok.

And then he caught a glimpse of them. Standing at one of the far corners of the dance floor. Momo and Mina standing over Olive, hovering around her with concern on their faces. For a moment Mina moved and he could see Olive clearly, holding a small white napkin wiping her eyes.

Shit.

“ Hey bro where are you ?”

“ Just drink your beer. ” Bakugou interrupted Kirishima as he quickly made his way to the dance floor. Momo’s eyes met his and she shook her head but he didn’t care. Olive wasn’t Momo’s wife, she was his. They were supposed to be distracting her, not reminding her about her memory loss.

“Hey,” he said, reaching out for her. Olive turned eyes wide, still slightly glassy from her tears. Her makeup smudged. “Dance with me.” pulling her away from the girls who looked like they were about to protest. But one death glare from Bakugou told them not too.

He led her across the floor, his red eyes studying her as she took a few shaky breaths. Trying to compose herself. After a few moments her body slowly relaxed letting him lead as he felt her slowly lose herself in the music again.

“You dance?” she asked looking up at him.

“Depends.” he said shrugging

“Humm” she hummed, nodding like Eliott was what she was thinking. Eliott Eliott Eliott. Even Momo got more out of her than him. He felt like she was more comfortable around everyone but him. “You know” she said leaning forward resting her head on his chest catching him off guard. “I like to be with you too.”

He froze, his stomach clutching tightly, his breath coming out in a short gasp. She looked up at him with those hazel eyes studying him. “What you said about Momo, I like being with you too.”

“I heard you the first time” he said sharply only to soften quickly.

“I… I obviously liked being with you before or I wouldn’t have married you.” she added a genuine grin spreading across her face.

“That would make sense.” He said nodding as they swayed in the music both caught up in their own thoughts. Eyes meeting, dancing in the lights overhead. For a second it felt as if time stood still and Olive was sworn she wasn’t in real life but in some weird musical romcom. As if her whole life was some televised novel filled with hi-jinks and drama.

Caught up in the moment Bakugou gently leaned forward, his nose brushing hers before pausing. Her heart leapt into her throat at the soft intimate touch. Crimson eyes searching hazel for a moment before moving closer, his warm breath caressing her ear.

“Let me kiss you?”

OCtober: Cal and Ed

It’s finally over. I’m sorry for the delay but stuff has been Happening. If there’s a tourism site that attracts you more to one city or the other, let me know.

Calgary | Edmonton

Below is some meta stuff about the ‘research’ (if you can even call it   that, it was more of a vibe check) I did for re-doing the profiles. Read  on, if it intrigues you. And I gotta mention there’s a bonus rabbit hole I went down for Calgary’s self-image that is. Well. A Lot.

Major Cities: Calgary and Edmonton

We made it team, the heart of the Battle of Alberta, the major city rivalry that defined generations. Calgary is the largest city in the province and the centre of southern Alberta, a young, fast-paced major city that oscillates wildly between boom and bust and is attracting both attention and employees from the traditional major cities in Canada. Edmonton is the capital of the province and the the most northern major city with a metro population of over one million on the continent, a little older and more blue collar, somewhat more stable economically, and quickly rising to meet the challenges presented by open data and sustainable urban planning. And, as we know, they've been antagonizing each other since the 19th century, but collaborating as well.

Website Round Up Premise

While I was revisiting these character profiles, I took a look at how cities represented themselves on their municipal sites and tourism sites rather than how cities were represented in the news or in stereotypes, as the latter already tend to live in the back of my head. I was interested to see who the target audiences for each city were, what they considered their strengths, and how much effort each city put into putting its own identity on display. I was also interested into what ideas sort of fed into any pre-existing confirmation bias I had about each city's personality as well as interested in what narratives might be used to counteract negative stereotypes.The first thing I tended to notice was the overall information architecture of each city's website. How easy were they to navigate? What kinds of information did they have? How did they organize it? How did they communicate that information?

Out and About

There's a sharp difference between the websites of major cities from other cities. They are very careful to separate the corporation of 'The City of' from the cities we might know, and therefore both websites have a much more business-like tone and more distance from their civic identities. This means no traditional "About" pages as other cities might have.

At the time I'm visiting, Edmonton's page has some ADORABLE art of a nuthatch that's making me very homesick. Calgary has a seasonally appropriate snowy skyline.

Calgary does have an "Our Organization" tab which describes the City as a corporation, and likewise Edmonton has a "City Government" tab that performs a similar function. Edmonton's is in alphabetical order which is only a little annoying and Calgary's reads like a very perfectly chunked business portfolio that doesn't... really say as much as it looks like it does, but it does get bonus points for vision/organization/accessibility.

I have never seen a more concise history of Calgary in my life. It's literally three bullet points and a couple of bracketing sentences, but it does do the job. Calgary is, more or less, what it says it is (although I do take slight issue with its self identification as a trading post - it may have functioned that way but that was not what it was founded for and in fact the trading companies gtfo'd asap in those early days). It goes on to paint a very good sketch of the city in as few lines as possible in the text, and there's a little video at the end that feels like it was voiced over in 1988 even though it's clearly not.

Edmonton's City government page is even vaguer. Let's make a more dynamic and resilient Edmonton shall we, the page suggests. Resilient against What Exactly, I wonder. Winter? The boom-bust? Calgary? who knows. The majority of the sub pages are even more mysterious and essentially paint the picture of a city. It's a normal city. Trust us. We do city things. Here is exactly how government works and how to raise and lower a flag. In Edmonton, which is, in fact, a city.

I'm begging you if you think Calvin is hokey and annoying please read the Our Culture page and see it's EXACTLY how I intended to portray him because it's eXACTLY what it's already like. "The Four C's of Our Culture" give me a break.

Edmonton offers me a picture of the skyline and says "City of Opportunity: City of You". I suppose this is true. I don't know what it means. I fear slightly for its intentions.

I keep seeing "Calgary: A great place to make a living, a great place to make a life" and it's like. Stop! I won't go! You can't make me! (and again the Strong and Resilient Calgary. these kids are always catching colds because they don't eat properly.)

Although Edmonton makes literally zero attempt to define itself (outside perhaps the official symbols page hidden under Facts and Figures), what strikes me is that it is portraying itself as a very future-oriented city, which, when I was growing up we really never were. We were an inward city constantly wishing we were somewhere else which is partially still true, and we were a city with such an intense nostalgia (that unlike Calgary we failed to really capitalize on) that grated roughly against a complete failure to preserve history. It does kind of make me glad that the city is looking towards the future and just like, acknowledging basic realities (like snow) and trying to involve people in urban planning more (and throughout the website the city LOOOOVES to share data which I also called, haha). There's also an adorable animation of the city road map in its strategic planning pages. It's interesting that for a city that leaves itself up to your own interpretation, it does have a LOT of information about itself collected and available.

Tourism

Oddly enough, neither city has substantially changed their tourism homepage to accommodate COVID-related staycation plans, although each does mention that many things may be closed or unavailable as a result of the pandemic.

CaLGARy, Be PaRT of THe EnERGy!!

I like how Edmonton's self-presentation is "original" and "we do things differently". It's like a Keep ___ Weird thing but in an understated self-assured way that makes me laugh a little. Like yeah, I guess we are kind of different, I guess we're just not used to seeing that as a good thing.

In the tourism guides there isn't much to say about Calgary's that isn't just "oh, classic Calgary" but I do think the fact that they have "quick facts" to explain what timezone it's in and what currency they use is adorable to say the least. also the title of the guide is CALGARY (and the canadian rockies) and that sums up Calgary pretty well, which I'll elaborate on more.

I actually can't find Edmonton's guide, if it has one, but that's ok. The website hits all the buttons that I would and I actually use exploreedmonton quite frequently because it has a nicer event calendar than the city website does, which is important in a place nicknamed Festival City. I really appreciate how things are organized by month/season and even down to "what's happening today/tomorrow/this week" because it makes planning trips for my visitors easy, so now you know my secret : ) I wish I could just beam this site directly into people's brains when they mention "oh yeah thats where the mall is" when I say I'm from Edmonton.

Interestingly enough it's Calgary's turn to be vague, which I can only assume is part of its "exactly what it says it is" charm. This desperation to find a shred of self-description outside of things to do and places to stay led me down a rabbit hole I will elaborate on in a moment that truly showed me I Knew Nothing about how deep Calgary's branding goes. Otherwise, the website is very practical and functions more like an answer to questions you had about the what and the how and less so the why.

Also, the "Locals" page on Calgary's site has tips on hosting friends and family from around the province safely during the pandemic which is kind of cute. Edmonton doesn't really have a local page (i guess because if we had a hashtag like #loveyyc we'd ruin it)

Bonus: The Rabbit Hole

I wondered why Calgary's tourism page, which I expected to be the most in your face description of the city possible, fell kind of flat. I learned this seems to be because tourists are not the target audience that Calgary wants to attract. It's companies and corporations, and they get their own page.

Boy oh boy do they get their own page

This led me down this frightening path of getting validation like being repeatedly punched in the face by what On Brand Calgary truly means and I'm frankly quite speechless about it - all I can say is that you need to see it for yourself.

The tourism site gestures to a Billion reasons why you should hold your next meeting in Calgary and here is where the self definition as Big City Energy and Western Hospitality starts kicking the tires and lighting the fires. Likewise with the media-oriented page. Suddenly stuff like the Calgary Bucket List starts popping up and I can't help but go hang on, why not suggest this to tourists?

"It's cowboy spirit, but also refined and cosmopolitan" [sighs into hands]

Suddenly all the "Calgarians love visitors! Calgarians love the outdoors!" stuff is spilling out like water from a dam here. "Where's Calgary?" [Link that reads FIND US].

Like i literally feel like the tourism side on the left is the Kids Menu, it's the corporate stuff on the right that I'm actually finding the type of information I want on. Eventually, I somehow make my way to Calgary's Destination Strategy which is trying to make Calgary a place that... well, people go. Like, internationally. Like the Olympics but MORE of that.

Then I find the Brand Evolution. Then I find Calgary's Economic Development site. The poetry about rocky mountain prairie skies and "where a handshake still means something" starts to reach its peak.

Then back through the tourism site I find the video. And the video makes me shake because it suggests the premise of The Powerpoint.

The Powerpoint. I cannot summarize the powerpoint in any meaningful way or how my emotions were a rollercoaster further and further up and down the longer i scrolled. Everything I know and suggest about Calgary seems to be unequivocally true, including the sense that Calgary as a person is the sort of person who makes powerpoints about his own identity crisis because that's precisely what this is.

And then I get to the part of the powerpoint that suggests I imagine what kind of person the city of Calgary might be (and implied: does that person think about anything other than the mountains???) THEY EVEN DID AN OCEAN PERSONALITY TEST FOR THE CITY I KID YOU NOT

Hi, City of Edmonton, hire me to take an OCEAN test for our fair city. I'm begging you.

Driver-assistance tech isn’t standard

The RS7 certainly looks the business, all angular and mean, with broad shoulders and wide hips and that classically beautiful Sportback silhouette. I’ll admit I still find the taillights of the current A7/S7/RS7 models to be a little frumpy, but that’s a small nit to pick on an otherwise flawless design. Considering the last RS7 was a little too sedate-looking for its own good, it’s nice to see Audi flexing a bit of design muscle with this latest RS hatch.

On the other hand, I’m equally glad Audi’s designers exercised plenty of restraint when penning the RS7’s cabin. What could’ve been a mess of unnecessary angles and overstyled surfaces is instead quite elegant. The interior isn’t really all that different from what you get in the rest of the A6 and A7 range, but I’m not mad about it. The overall aesthetic is clean and modern, with tasteful accent stitching on the RS-specific seats and no superfluous buttons — just flat, clean surfaces and screens, screens, screens.

Audi currently leads the charge on luxury-car cabin tech and it’s easy to see why. The company’s MMI Touch Response infotainment system is easy to operate, with colorful tiles for the most frequently used features, snappy response times and a relatively intuitive menu structure. The 10.1-inch screen in the middle of the dash houses the main multimedia interface, and there’s a secondary, 8.6-inch display below. That slightly smaller screen is where you’ll find climate control functions and on-off switches for the stop-start system and various driver-assistance features. The bottom display also functions as a handwriting tablet for easy destination search or address entry. Open a nav search, write “tacos” and boom, you’re off to lunch.

The MMI interface is seriously robust, but you don’t even need it most of the time. That’s because the RS7 comes standard with Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital gauge cluster, housed on a 12.3-inch screen head of the steering wheel. This basic tech might be a few years old, but Virtual Cockpit is still the bomb, with Google Earth navigation overlays and simple controls for things like phone, audio and vehicle data via steering-wheel toggles.

Weirdly, while the RS7 comes with Audi’s best multimedia tech offerings, all of the good driver-assistance wizardry costs extra. Yes, a 360-degree camera, parking sensors and forward collision warning are standard, but full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, traffic sign recognition and rear cross-traffic alert are all locked behind the $2,250 Driver Assistance Package. Why this stuff doesn’t come standard on a six-figure luxury car is beyond me, but it’s also not uncommon, so whatever.

Then again, it’s not like you’re buying an RS7 to let the computers take over every time you get behind the wheel. This thing absolutely rips, and you’d be doing yourself a disservice not to drive the pants off it every chance you get.

The fun starts with Audi’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 — the same one you’ll find in a bunch of other cars, including the RS6 Avant. This engine sends 591 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels through Audi’s excellent Quattro all-wheel-drive system, resulting in a 0-to-60-mph time of just 3.5 seconds. That’s damn quick.

Shockingly, these huge, 22-inch wheels don’t ruin the ride.

Happily, every RS7 gets Audi’s full roster of performance hardware, including an adaptive air suspension, electronic rear differential and four-wheel steering. The last two bits are particularly important, giving this all-wheel-drive car a bit of rear-wheel-drive shove through corners, the rear-axle steering virtually shortening the wheelbase while you slink through tight bends. The RS7 is an incredibly agile thing, with nicely weighted and communicative steering and solid power from the standard steel brakes. You can pay $8,500 to add ceramic brakes with gray calipers, which offer a world of stopping power, but I don’t think you’ll need this upgrade in day-to-day use. If you’re tracking your RS7 or frequently hitting triple-digit speeds, then sure, live it up. For the rest of you, just stick with the steel stoppers.

Regardless of which brakes you choose, they’re nestled behind absolutely massive wheels. The RS7’s standard setup wraps 21-inch wheels in 275/35 tires, but this tester has the optional 22-inch package with lower-profile 285/30 rubber. Audi says the 21s are the smallest-diameter wheels that will clear the RS7’s huge brakes, and the 22s just look like overkill by comparison. Thankfully, the air suspension is tuned to filter out a lot of the harshness you might otherwise expect from such an aggressive wheel-and-tire package. Whether you’re rolling in the RS7’s Comfort or Dynamic modes, the ride quality I observed on Southern California roads is great — smooth and supple on the highway but nice and taut during sporty driving. I’m struggling to think of another car that’s as nicely sorted while riding on enormous wheels — aside from the RS6 Avant, anyway.

I’d personally rather have the wagon, but hey, you do you.

In fact, the RS7 is all-around nicer to drive and live with than its closest competitors, the BMW M8 Gran Coupe and Mercedes-AMG GT63. The Audi is simply better balanced and has sharper in-car tech, and this car’s Sportback shape means it’s far more capacious, with 24.7 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and a whole lot more if you fold them flat. The only thing that comes close is Audi’s own RS6 Avant or a run-of-the-mill crossover. Why buy a crossover when you could get this?

Really, the RS7’s closest competitor is the aforementioned RS6. The RS7 is a bit more expensive, at $115,045 to start (including $1,045 for destination) compared to the RS6’s $110,045. I personally can’t imagine picking the Sportback over the more interesting-looking and more functional Avant, but not everyone shares my opinion. 

No matter the roofline, Audi’s latest RS is a winner.

Dungeon Siege III

I bought Dungeon Siege III with its DLC and the prior two DS games for $10 about five years ago.  I gave it a little bit of a start back then but decided to just sit down and finish it this time.  A little more than 24 hours later and I finished both the game and its DLC.  I played as Anjali and maxed out Influence with Lucas and got halfway there with Katarina, and barely used Reinhart.  I used an Xbox 360 controller for the whole game, playing in Fire Form and shooting people from afar and using her area-of-effect abilities when crowded.  I'll explain that in a bit.

First, yes, Dungeon Siege III isn't really a good Dungeon Siege game.  To me, DS games were about fielding a rather large array of characters and playing Diablo with them, as opposed to the "player and AI helper and summons" that's been the norm since at least Diablo II.  Everyone had personality!  And instead of hitting an arbitrary experience level and being given points to allocate, you had a 'gain by doing' system typical of some MMOs.  If you swing a melee weapon a bunch, you'd gain ranks in the Melee class; if you used Combat Magic, you'd gain in Combat Magic.  It did things kinda differently even though its goal of being a "Diablo killer" didn't quite take.  So is Dungeon Siege III a bad game?  No.  It's just not really good as far as DS games of past, at least in terms of gameplay.  It's pretty different.  

Banter aside, you can call up these golden orbs to show you the way.  You’ll be using them a lot.  

Things are pretty bad for the 10th Legion in Ehb.  Supposedly they murdered the king three decades ago and some fanatic from the church is hell-bent on killing every single Legionnaire, going as far as turning pretty much the entire country against them.  How lucky that you're one of the last few descendants of the Legion.  Join with your old friend Odo at the old Montbarron Estate and plot a counterattack!  I'm sure nothing bad will happen before you get there...  

This is your enemy.  Have fun!  

Dungeon Siege III is an action RPG like previous entries in the series, but combat is a bit different and there's an even bigger focus on story than even DS2.  Instead of creating a character from scratch, you instead have your pick between the sword-and-board knight Lucas, the spear and fireballs archon Anjali, the handguns and rifle witch Katarina, and the magic and more magic Reinhart.  The story changes slightly based on who you pick, and you're able to meet the other three characters as you play and have them join you.  DS3's 'gimmick' with combat revolves around the two stances.  One stance is designed to deal with multiple targets close-by, like when you get mob rushed.  The other is meant to handle single targets and for everyone but Lucas, you're able to attack at a great range with this.  The idea is to swap modes as combat progresses but I didn't really do that.  I can't remember any situation where you explicitly needed a ranged attack, so it's largely down to the stance's attacks and how comfortable you are with using them.  

When you level up, you slowly unlock additional attacks for your two offensive stances and enable options for your third defensive stance.  Each stance has three attacks and there are three options for defense, so you have nine total moves for each character.  Each move can then be enhanced five times each from a pool of two mods--for example, one of Anjali's Fire Form special attacks creates a burning field under her.  Your choice of enhancements are to simply boost the damage output of the attack or have it slowly heal any allies standing in its area of effect.  You are able to mix the effects, but you're limited to a max of five no matter what.  And you're also given points to provide unique passive boosts to your character, such as a percent chance to start regenerating health when damaged, a greater chance to crit a target at full health, or to simply boost one stat.  Though you cannot take control of your allies, you can still equip them and allocate skill points and so on as if you could, so there's still some customizing potential.  The Treasures of the Sun DLC adds the ability to completely respec your characters for 20,000 gold each--a little pricey but it's the only way to undo mistakes you've made in your build during the game.

And these are the passive bonuses you can buy.  

DS3 has completely done away with potions.  Small orbs drop from containers or enemies during combat--green ones restore health, blue ones restore Focus, and purple ones with yellow outlines restore Power.  Focus takes the place of traditional MP in this game.  You only ever have a max of 100 of it, and every special attack drains a set amount of it.  It's restored by using your regular attack on enemies.  Power is used to fuel your defensive stance's moves as well as the 'empowered' versions of every move, and that's restored by using your special attacks on enemies or taking damage.  Empowered basic attacks generally deal more damage or hit a wider area, but empowered special attacks have effects like much more damage, a wider range, or being able to affect your ally as well as yourself.  Empowered basic attacks are enabled as soon as you get the first Power orb, but getting it for special attacks requires you to use them quite a bit during your journey. The game at least lists the empowered benefit even before you purchase the special attack for use, so that's very handy.  

There's still randomly-enchanted gear to find like in any ARPG.  You have a pretty spacious inventory of I think a bit over 80 slots, but it can fill up especially if you forget to dump your trash at the local merchant.  You can Transmute unwanted gear to get a fraction of its value in gold immediately and with the DLC, you can break down some gear to get reagents to apply to other gear with Enchantment, but I never really made use of it.  Everyone has eight equipment slots and navigating it wasn't too bad with a controller.  Each slot is a category and only the relevant gear shows up.  You're given a window where what you have on is compared to what you have selected along with green and red arrows showing the changes in stats.  Takes out some of the guesswork when you've figured out how to read it at least.  This is the first game like this in a long time if ever where NPCs sold unique-class equipment.  They still drop, but it didn't feel like it was at random.  There's no player stash so holding onto them isn't really useful.  They kept the "pick up everything nearby" button from the first two games though!  So looting won't be tedious at all.  

Appropriately enough, the final store in the game sells nothing but uniques.  

There's a pretty heavy focus on story this time around.  DS1 started with "help the Krugs are attacking blegh dead" and you wind up running across the kingdom eventually saving it from an ancient evil you were completely unaware of when you set out from your humble farmstead.  DS2 started with "I wanna go home" and then "I want revenge" and still the story was kinda left in the background.  Here, it's pretty front-and-center.  Conversations were already voiced in prior games but there's just so much dialog this time.  There are up to four dialog options and you're not pressed for time to select like with Alpha Protocol, and a lot of them are questions--who are you, why are you doing this, where are we, etc etc.  You gain influence with your current ally based on some things you say, though the only bonus that provides is a stat boost.  There are some decisions to make, like what to do with one of the early bosses or unruly workers in Stonebridge, but as opposed to a karma meter, your major choices instead get a "still images that move" cutscene and others are mentioned at the epilogue, Fallout-style.  There are several Lore books and entries to find and I thought it was a nice touch that you're able to review anything you found from the menu at any time.  There aren't quizzes or anything, but it's great for the lore buffs.  There are likely slight differences in the story based on who you picked to play as, but I only went through with one character.  

I have the feeling Anjali was meant to be a second-run kinda character given what she is and how her people factor into the story.  

Music is orchestrated ambient stuff and there's a lot of professional voice acting here (not that I looked up who did the work in prior games I mean).  Nothing about the audio got annoying or bothersome and I didn't run into the 'Bethesda syndrome' of having one actor voice several characters in close proximity.  Controls weren't bad.  The controller doesn't allow you to mouse-over who you want to attack, so using the sticks to select a target is a little tedious, but every button wound up having a use.  Difficulty was pretty standard.  I only game overed once...on a non-story boss.  There aren't KO and Dead states in this game, just you or your ally needs to interact with the downed body for a couple of seconds without getting hurt and they're back up at 50% health.  I wound up dropping probably close to 40-some times total due to me playing aggressively, so your mileage may vary.  You can manually block in this game, so it would be smart to use it!  

I think I know why there are no mules in this game.  I wouldn’t be surprised if they went extinct by now!  

One problem I had with the game was that it took me a good while to really get into it.  I don't know how much of it was "ugh this isn't Dungeon Siege of old" wearing off, but it did finally endear itself to me.  It's too bad that point was roughly past halfway, though.  I didn't do multiplayer but it has a pretty weird setup.  You join someone's game and you play as one of their characters...and you take nothing back with you.  Anything that drops stays with the host.  You don't even get experience points or progress through the story.  One minor thing I didn't like was that in conversations, you never see your character or your ally's faces.  There are very few sections where your faces are shown and they're actually animated for speaking, but it seems like a waste given how much you both actually speak and you just never see it.  The conversations focus on the person you're speaking to almost the entire time otherwise.  I didn't like the lack of fast-travel options.  No Town Portal, no warping between save points, just you and having to hoof it at a plodding max speed.  And...there's no way to save anywhere like the prior games.  There are several save points, but I ran into "you cannot save until combat has ended" more than a few times, even if enemies weren't in the immediate area.  Pretty annoying.  

Would it have been too disorienting to have the camera switch back and forth?

Overall, Dungeon Siege III isn't a bad action RPG.  It's likely not going to be fondly remembered and some would argue it was what killed the franchise, if it'll be remembered at all.  To me, it didn't really do anything terribly unique, nothing that was memorable other than having a lot of polish, especially for an Obsidian game.  I had maybe two bugs and zero crashes the entire game, and that's pretty notable.  But yeah.  You won't have to or need to pause the game and swap spells or get everyone to drink potions and you can't build a diverse team intending to play as them anytime you wish, but it's not bad otherwise.  Just it's not a good Dungeon Siege.  

As for Treasures of the Sun as a whole, it adds some things.  The level cap is increased to 35, there are three ultimate abilities added that drain your Power orbs to fuel their effects (an instant heal, a wide damage blast, and a party-wide shield) you can find and only use one of at a time, you can break down equipment and Enchant it into other gear as I mentioned above, you can respec, and the story content isn't particularly long but it takes place in an entirely new area.  It's not necessarily what I'd call essential, but it's the only DLC for the game and you may as well get it with the base game just because.

Since then many website owners, influential bloggers, and online publications have stopped using AMP. Many of them shared the reasons behind their decision.

For example, Alex Kras wrote in great length about why he decided to disable AMP on his website.

He also shared what happened one month after he disabled Google AMP.

Drastic Drop in Conversion Rates

AMP uses a restrictive set of HTML/JS. Site owners cannot do much about encouraging users to subscribe, fill out contact forms, or buy stuff.

Lower Pageviews by Mobile Users

AMP does not show your website’s navigation menus, sidebars, or other content discovery features. This causes significant drop in pageviews by mobile users.

In fact some user experience experts suggest that the close button on top actually encourages users to return back to Google search after reading your article instead of browsing your website.

Lower User Engagement

Many websites thrive on user interactions, like click to tweet widgets, user ratings, comments, and so on. Google AMP makes it quite difficult for website owners to keep users engaged and interact with their content.

Should You Disable Google AMP?

The answer to this question actually depends on your website. If mobile users make the majority of your audience, then you may still want to use AMP.

On the other hand, if you have tried Google AMP, and it has negatively affected your conversion rates, then you should probably disable Google AMP on your website.

Contrary to popular belief, Google does not penalize websites for not using AMP. You can still improve your website’s speed and performance on mobile to compete for mobile search audience.

Step 1. Disabling Google AMP in WordPress

There are a couple of WordPress plugins that allow you to add AMP support to your website. The basic settings remain the same regardless of what plugin you are using.

First thing you need to do is to deactivate the AMP plugin. Simply visit the plugins page and click on the deactivate link below AMP plugin.

Deactivating the plugin will disable the AMP support on your website.

Step 2. Setting up Redirects

Disabling the AMP plugin will remove the AMP version of your articles from the website, but that alone is not enough specially if you have AMP turned on for more than a week.

There is a very good chance that Google already have those pages cached in their index, and it will keep showing those pages in search results.

To fix this problem, you need to redirect users coming to AMP pages to the regular non-AMP pages.

We will show you two different methods to set up redirects for Google AMP. You can choose the one that’s most convenient for you.

Method 1: Using a Redirect Plugin

First you will need to install and activate the Redirection plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, go to Tools » Redirection page to set up redirects.

First, add the following code in the source URL field:

/(.*)\/amp

In the target URL field, you need to add your website’s URL in the following format:

http://example.com/$1

Don’t forget to replace example.com with your own domain name.

Now check the Regex checkbox and select Redirections under the Group drop down menu.

Finally click on the ‘Add Redirect’ button to save your changes.

You can now visit an AMP page on your website to see if the redirect is working properly.

Method 2: Manually Set Redirects in .htaccess

If you don’t want to use a plugin to setup redirects, then you can setup redirects using the .htaccess file on your WordPress hosting account.

First you will need to connect to your website using a FTP client or File Manager in cPanel. Once connected, you need to locate the .htaccess file in your website’s root folder and edit it.

Simply add the following code at the bottom of your .htaccess file:

The second menu is also to the right of the logo, but all the way to the right of the header. This menu is an action menu, also with three options. Keeping these menus apart clearly expresses the message that they are for totally different purposes. One very important element to menu number two is that it emphasizes the “list your property” section. This is done in order to call your attention to this section of the menu, because it is the most important action they want you to take. This is a very important thing to do.

Like a lot of sites I have seen recently, the photos have dark overlays which allow light colored text or other lighter images to be placed on top of them. The dark overlays help the images to appear as more of a background image and make the text significantly more readable. The fonts used are very elegant and seem to work very well with the overall aesthetic of the page. Great colors used. I really like the sort of earth tone green used with the light lavender. Very soft colors and pleasing to the eye. The whole site makes me relaxed, especially when I see that second picture which is destined to be my future vacation home in the mountains!

  Sotheby’s International Realty

This is a pretty well designed site. I like the fixed header and the video footage. I’m not exactly sure if a video gallery is necessary on the home page, but the footage is beautiful so I’m not slamming it. The menu is easy to read, in a good spot, and there aren’t an overwhelming amount of actions involved – just properties, destinations, lifestyles, blog and professionals. There is a sign in button on the right side of the header which I suppose could be a call to action, but it isn’t very vivid and eye catching. I’m not sure if that is the main reason for this site, to get people to sign in, but having that button over there makes it seem important.

Another thing I like about this site is that it is easy to navigate. You don’t ever have to resort to using that default back button that is built into the browser. I also like the simplicity of the site. It is just beautiful images on a white background. It doesn’t look cluttered and there aren’t all kinds of unnecessary fancy effects, well, other than a parallax an the home page gallery which I wouldn’t consider “overdoing it”. For a real estate site this is really well done, which I can honestly only say about 1 out of 20 real estate pages. Get a quality web designer realtors! Contact Tim B. Design for God’s sake!!!

Realty One Group

This site has a good color scheme. I like the golden/tan/white/black sorta thing going on. It doesn’t look like a pack of Skittles which is cool. It looks classy! I like the alternating sections, something very popular these days. The menu is in the header on top and is simple. It has four options with sub heads that drop down. It’s super easy to navigate and you can always find your way back to the page you were at before. I like how the home page has a huge call to action right smack in the middle of the page – “Find Your Home” with a search engine and some options. Looks pretty easy to use, even for those who aren’t very internet savvy!

The images on this site are very positive. Lots of people smiling and in love & stuff. I think this is great! Newlyweds are a huge target market for realtors. But this site doesn’t target newlyweds exclusively. There is one page that has black text on very dark images which could use some fixing, but other than that it looks pretty nice!

Coldwell Banker

I’m not surprised that Coldwell Banker has a nice site. I like the images and having the search engine right smack in the middle of the page illustrates the importance of taking an action. There is also a more subtle menu that folds out from the right with some of the same buttons that are in the middle of the page, and a couple different ones. The site is easy to navigate and includes links to their social media pages, which is very important.

This site is very user friendly. There are different pages to the site, and a lot of information, but each page is laid out in a tall scrolling fashion which has become almost universal in all professionally designed websites. It is easy to find exactly what you are looking for here. There aren’t a whole lot of interesting design elements here, which is just fine for a real estate site. It’s just beautiful images arranged in sections with legible type and plenty of calls to action. And if anyone is having trouble locating exactly what they want to find, they can resort to using the footer for navigation. Functionality is key, and this page is a great example of that. Straight to the point using great imagery. No crazy animations or Parallax effects. I think that any client would be satisfied using this site, as long as the search engine works well, which I’d assume it does by the look of things.

Modern Real Estate Services Inc.

I like their logo, simple and it would work in B&W too. The header has a lot of white space which is ok, but the phone number and social media links (only two of them?) look kind of jammed into the upper right. Give this info a little breathing room for fuck sake! And get some more social media accounts. Having two makes it look like an incomplete menu, but more importantly, they would probably get more business if they were marketing on more platforms than Facebook and LinkedIn. The menu is in a good spot and is easy to navigate. They could lose the home button though. A good percentage of the people using the site will probably know that clicking the logo will take you “home”, and for the rest, they can use the browser back button. There is no need for home buttons in this day and age. There is a twitch in the menu when you click vacancies or contact and that’s kind of annoying. And having three call to actions that just say “learn more” seems kind of pointless. I feel like these sections (pay rent online, available properties and services) could be worked into the main menu, perhaps in a sub menu drop down style thingy. They should go with one main call to action, not three.

What I like about this site is the colors, the images, the easy navigation, the obvious calls to action (although having so many makes me wonder what the most important action to take is), the basic layout, and the fact that there aren’t a bunch of crazy animations or advanced design elements (real estate doesn’t need to be all artsy fartsy). It is clear that they are here to do business, and they’re not resorting to unnecessary means to win people over. That kind of shit really just makes a real estate company look desperate. Save the animations and advanced design stuff for your portfolio site, if even that! I feel like in some senses web design is getting away from complexity, and in other ways getting more complex with reveal and parallax effects. I suppose it depends on the what the website is about. It can be fun and make things interesting I guess, but it is used unnecessarily in so many places. This site does not do that, which is nice.

Brix Real Estate

As usual, I’ll start at the top with the header. Nice logo & nice menu, exactly what you need in a header. It doesn’t hurt to have social media links, but personally I think the footer is a better area for them. The header fades out then back in at a slightly different size as you scroll down which isn’t a huge problem (didn’t even notice it the first time I scrolled) but it would look nicer if it either remained fixed or didn’t. There is also a little movement of the menu when buttons are clicked, like a twitch, but not too noticeable. The video clip loops are really nice looking and relevant. The large call to action buttons under the video area serve their purpose. It clearly states the purpose of the site – to search.

Go a bit further down (under the call to actions) and you have a featured listings area that looks very nice, but when you roll over it all the images pop out and resize. Like I have said before, I’m not a fan of these effects when it comes to real estate sites, but it could be worse. I think it would look just fine without the enlarging on rollover effect. There are a couple sections underneath that that look good. An image with white text over it which is easy to read. A bit cheesy and stock photo looking, but not too bad. I don’t know why there are 2 sections way at the bottom – building guide and neighborhood guide. Maybe these are not important…? Just curious as to why they are way at the bottom, just above the footer.

Nice site though overall. Visually pleasing, easy to navigate, call to actions, good use of white space, etc… With a few minor tweaks I feel like this could be a perfect website for a realty company.
