the thing frequently cited as eddie’s Mistake in s5 is “quitting his job without talking to chris” which i really struggle to understand because on one level i don’t think a parent is obligated to talk to their 10 year old child about a career decision and i also don’t think a 10 year old child can be expected to provide reasonable insight on the best approach to their own trauma. and on another level i think this implies that if eddie had talked to chris then he would have Known he didn’t Have to quit his job and could have never been miserable at dispatch … but like. eddie was not fit for active duty. he was right to quit his job! there was a reason bobby didn’t let him come back. his Mistake was using christopher’s supposed needs as his motivation and as an easy excuse to continue repressing his trauma and burgeoning anxieties and to continue marching forward without closely examining what he was trying to get away from. there is a world in which eddie quitting firefighting and being miserable at dispatch for the rest of his days COULD have been the answer and a genuine sacrifice he chose to make as a parent, but that’s not what he was doing—he was convincing himself he was making a genuine sacrifice when what he was actually doing was trying to keep a lid on all the boxes holding his issues.
i also struggle with the idea that the mistake eddie is making Now is “moving to el paso without talking to chris” for similar reasons. like, i don’t think a 14 year old is equipped to make decisions like that, even if they’re for his own sake, or for dealing with his own trauma. there is a world in which eddie packs up and moves to el paso because genuinely, it is better for chris, it’s where chris is thriving, and he’d be well within his right to do so even if it theoretically blocks chris from returning to life in LA—it’s not a mistake for eddie to make the unequivocal decision about where they live lol. the actual problem is that he’s once again using chris thriving in a different environment as an excuse to repress the fact that the reason he’s taking this drastic decision he doesn’t want to take is because he doesn’t trust himself. probably chris IS having a good time in texas. but eddie doesn’t want to think about the wounds that lead him to believe he can’t give chris what he needs, or that lead him to actually hurt chris, so instead he is making another ingenuine sacrifice to avoid feeling things he thinks he doesn’t deserve to feel, or shouldn’t be feeling. of course we know that LA is his home and staying in el paso isn’t going to end up being the right decision, but it’s not the wrong decision because they shouldn’t move away ever or should never be sad ever and eddie should know that, it’s the wrong decision because he’s not being honest with himself about why he’s making it… which was also the case in s5.

can i ask why ur getting the surgery? /gen curious /no hate
i am getting a bi(lateral)salp(ingectomy) bc i never want to be pregnant or be a parent!
Even if i do change my mind later about the parent thing (not super likely but things can change, sure) theres noooo shortage of single parents lmao
And even if I never End Up In The Circumstance(s) Where I COULD Become Pregnant in my life, I'd want the peace of mind anyway...
I've always felt disgusted that this is something my body is capable of. I want it to be MY body and not a site and vessel for potential tragedy in any direction. And I want it to be something permanent and not dependent on access to services/medicines or even laws!!! Dis is a gender affirming surgery for me honestly...

IDK why but I often think about RG saying Tommy breaking up with Buck was "the worst day of Buck's life". Like even he recognizes how important the relationship was/is 😔

After seeing that bts of RG in a white shirt and turnouts on set for 8x18, it got me theorising
What if Eddie hasn't got his job back and he's just there to help as an ex 118er? Bc I struggle to see how he would get his job back so easily now that Bobby is gone, unless Bobby wrote down somewhere or specifically told someone his wishes for Eddie

I’ll never forgive folks in the tf2 community back in the day who made me feel bad for shipping Pyro with any of the mercs due to infantilizing them. I WILL ship texas toast and nobody will stop me.

Also, did they just...use the same outdoor cafe for the BuckTommy coffee date and the Marjan/Joe lunch with her parents? Where they ask if they can get married? And expected us not to notice? 🤣

The thought of Amelia/Alfred declaring independence and then being immediately thrust into parenthood appeals to me. Imagine if you will shortly after the Revolution the emergence of State Personifications coming about with each admission to the Union (Delaware was the first one). Whether they appear miraculously or are birthed via (unwilling) parthenogenesis (which I prefer) the bottom line is that suddenly America has all these kids to take care of, all of who grow up just as fast as America did. Regardless of how they came to be or how fast they grow, America loves them with his/her whole being and creates a system in which they are always protected and accounted for by the larger government. America promises to be there for them the way England never was.
Then fast forward to the Civil War, and America is waging a bloody war against half of her/his children that see hundreds of thousands of their people dead. Brother against brother, father against son, cousin against cousin. And each secession feels like a small death because they are part of America just as much as America is a part of them, practically inseparable, or at least America thought so. To add even more complexity, not all of America's children were white or white-passing. America being neglected because s/he was to far away or denied certain rights for not being British enough was bad on its own, but imagine your parent not being able to claim you or fully protect you or give you basic human rights without public/social/political backlash because your skin is darker and you're legal property in half the country. Or imagine having powerful politicians who want to keep people who look like your children in bondage and you have to compromise with them to keep the Union whole, knowing the opinions they would have if they even knew you had children who were black (some of them do know and make sure their opinions are known). Or your other children starting a war to selfishly keep this system in place at the expense of their black siblings. The relationship between America and his/her children, with America acting as both the federal government that protects the states as well as the greater whole that represents the Union and the states as the children, each an extension of America, an integral part of America's being, pushing back against the sometimes overbearing hovering of their parent, impeding on states rights (whether they believe America is in the right or not) and protecting others and sometimes America will helplessly throw his/her hands in the air and say "fine, ill let YOU decide on this issue because I am not a dictator, despite what some of you like to think, but if you fuck up im stepping in" because America doesn't want to make the same mistakes England made in the past but then America has to deal with the negative consequences of her/his children's actions when they do something unbelievably stupid while trying not to seem like a fire-breathing tyrant. Which, they end up thinking anyway, regardless if America wasn't entirely in the wrong about butting in and taking hold of the situation before it escalated. The negative reaction only serves to make America step away AGAIN so as to not seem completely authoritarian in their eyes. It's a never-ending cycle. Not to mention the complex relationships the states have with each other, especially the southern states among themselves and the southern vs northern states rivalry.
Edit:
also whenever America takes his/her eyes off the states for 1mili second to see what the rest of the world is up to (hopefully not another world war) while usually being like 'back off, geeze! 🤬' America's children immediately switch to 'how come you're not paying attention to ME instead 🥺 you always focus on the world instead of ME 😢'

musing about mallwalkers. theyre usually older women. mall walking is nice because youre in a flat, climate controlled environment, that has close access to benches, bathrooms, food, and water. and its enjoyable - you get to chat with your fellow walkers, and you get to people watch, and look at the things in the door displays.
so then I thought hmm, its so nice to walk in there, I wonder why its just elderly people? Like, why dont younger people with disabilities who can walk try doing thing? Obvs you'd have to work up to it, but for a lot of people it could be a good way to get a bit of exercise is.
and then I realised. oh.
the people I've seen mallwalking (which was in Texas, I've NEVER seen a wall malker in Canada, that's not a thing here I guess?) are older, skinny, majority white, gender conforming women wearing nice, clean, fun tracksuits.
because those are the people who dont get kicked out.
if a poc does that and they arent part of the majority-white upper middle class friend group, they get kicked out. same with gnc people. same with fat people. same with people with visible disabilities. "undesirables" are the people who security watches - security isn't just going to say 'okay yeah dw you can totally walk around without paying!' to some fat trans person of colour with a limp.
which is really sad because mall walking has so many benefits. benefits you do NOT get by using a treadmill, or by walking outside.
