So imagine my absolute delight when my sister and brother in law tried to explain to me that “you won’t really own any of your switch 2 games because they’re all on keycards,” accidentally giving me permission to ascend into my true form: the most insufferable nerd you’ve ever met.

switch 2 can be remotely deactivated by Nintendo?

yes. original switch could also be deactivated! as far as I'm aware they never did that though- just banned people who were caught with a modded switch from using the Nintendo servers. (basically if u modded online games such as splatoon to use exploits you'd get banned)

this was exceedingly rare.

this is also true for pretty much ALL modern consoles. obvi u can feel like it's messed up but it's common practice.

switch 2 doesn't have physical cartridges anymore it's all download codes/virtual cartridges/you dont own games

not true? ppl are conflating a few different things.

first of all, some games ARE download code only. they don't come with a cartridge and say as much on their box. As in it's literally ON the front of the box that it doesn't contain game data.

virtual cartridge is Nintendo's new "family share" system. basically if someone in your family has a switch with a digital game they bought they can lend it to you for you to play. steam already has this and it's pretty nice!

games are one time purchases but yes they do have DRM. this is the case for all modern games? steam, epic, ECT all have DRM. all consoles do too? hell- bluerays and DVDs have DRM. CDs have DRM. pretty much everything has DRM.

if you think having DRM means not owning, then yes, you don't own the games. However you can play these games offline? pretty much ALL switch games work completely fine without connecting to the Internet at all. so if you are worried about it you can just. play with ur games offline or whatever so they can't take them away from you idk lol.

switch 2 is expensive

switch 2 games are 80 dollars!!!

so far 3 Nintendo games are 80 dollars physically. 70 dollars digitally.

you can get Mario kart world as part of the bundle for 50 dollars, and you can upgrade existing copies of TOTK and BOTW for 10 each. obvi that's pretty expensive so I get it, but I doubt many people are going to be spending the full 80 dollars on any of those games.

also pretty much all third party titles so far are 60 or less. only Nintendo as far as I can tell is doing the 70~80 price tag.

that's totally okay tho I get that complaint for sure LOL. 70~80 is not the norm but the exception as far as I can tell

VERY FUN SO FAR.

they completely changed drifting and tricking so I have yet to get used to that but it's still fun.

there's a mini achievement system!!!! I'm having fun with that too

unlocking outfits is really easy too which is nice. an open world game that is all Mario kart track is extremely interesting! I keep going into tiny crevices and then discovering that like. oh they put track here- they expected ppl to go here!

it's extremely polished and the animations are sooo cute!!!!! :3

it seems like they are using Mario wonder as the aesthetic choice going forward- similar to how new super Mario was the aesthetic choice for the last generations.

I chatted with the people around me! the person to my right (the first person in line) was someone my age who basically was in a similar situation to me.

the person to my right was a millennial who was extremely friendly and nice! I think they took time off work to go.

pretty much everyone else brought chairs! the only ppl who didn't were ppl who joined the line 1-2 hours in advance.

My friend got me chicken strips :D

I had a wonderful time!

it was fun to be around other people who were also excited for the same thing. if I had to describe it, it felt a bit like chatting on an airplane? where ur forced to sit next to each other? but like the conversation starts with one topic which everyone is passionate about.

I got sunburnt even though it was overcast :')

I would highly recommend doing something like it in the future if you ever get the chance.

basically it feels like a device that should cost 700 USD to me, like it feels like I'm playing on a modern ipad. it is so much bigger but somehow I don't mind at all???? i played for basically an hour straight and I had some arm strain (it is heavy and I wasn't playing in a comfortable position) but not nearly as much arm strain as I get on the original switch. the new joycons have rounded corners for the palms thank fucking god.

(I have issues with my right hand and on the original switch my right hand goes numb if I play too long)

I haven't tried out mousecon or docked mode yet.

I am extremely happy with my purchase. 0 regrets

I was one of the people who was extremely worried about the controller connection but it's way stronger than the original switches and it's easier to remove when you want. one thing I forsee being an issue though is accidentally hitting the disconnect controller button cuz it's close to the ZR/ZL button

UI is nice, I've only tried Mario kart world yet and it runs beautifully, no frame drops, extremely high quality. I have to get used to the new drifting mechanics but that's to be expected lmao
