H/D Erised 2023 Sign-ups are open!!!!!

H/D Erised sign-ups open July 14th!!

Sign-ups open July 14th (9AM EDT | 2PM BST) (World Clock | Time Zones Converter).

 Remember to thoroughly read our Rules and Guidelines and FAQ posts before you sign up! All participants are bound by the Rules and Guidelines; make sure you know what’s in them! We also recommend having a look at our H/D Erised Style Guide.

Sign-up forms are available here! Please make sure you are using this year’s sign-up form and that you’ve got the HTML formatting right. (This makes it much easier for us to read your sign-up and match you with a great gifter and recipient!) We also ask that you avoid requesting remixes of your existing work or referencing specific creators in your sign-up.

Sign-ups are first come, first served. We will be capping the number of writers at 35. There’s no cap for artists. Proxy and placeholder sign-ups are permitted, so long as you submit your full sign-up form within 24 hours. If you’re not sure when sign-ups open in your time zone, try the Time Zones Converter. (To convert, for “Select time and place to convert from” use 14 July 2023 14/2pm United Kingdom - England - London)

Sign-ups are held on Dreamwidth. You don’t need a Dreamwidth account to sign up, but be aware that if you sign up via anonymous comment you won’t be able to make edits to the code or substance of your sign-up form.

Speaking of, if you make any edits to your post after your initial sign-up, you must send the mods a quick email to let us know what you’ve changed. This lets us account for it when we match you!

If you’re thinking about signing up with a collaborator and/or if you’ve dropped from the fest in the past, you must contact the mods before sign-ups to check in about eligibility.

Remember that signing up for an exchange fest means that there’s someone creating a gift tailored to your tastes, and someone else eagerly awaiting your creation! Please think carefully about your availability and make sure that you’re aware of the fest deadlines and that you can realistically meet them. (If that’s up in the air, there’s always the option of signing up as a pinch hitter!)

H/D Erised 2023: A Modly Announcement

Hello, beloved H/D Erised Community! 

It’s almost time for our formal fest announcement! We can barely wait for this year’s art, writing, and squee! Keep an eye out for more info, coming very soon! 

But first, an announcement: 

We, your loval mods, @dictacontrion, @firethesound, and @gracerene have been deeply honored to helm this fest for the past half-decade-plus. We love H/D Erised and we are perpetually bowled over by this community’s enthusiasm, creativity, support, and brilliance. We have also come to the difficult realization that our real life plates runneth waaayy over, and we won’t always be able to commit the amount of time and energy it takes to keep this incredible endeavor running. With heavy hearts, we must announce, dear friends, that it will soon be time for us to step away. 

Still, we know that H/D Erised means as much to many of you as it does to us, and we want it to have a bright future for many years to come!! So….drumroll please….

We are DELIGHTED to announce a new mod-team-to-be: @epitomereally  (El), @thehoneybeet  (honey), and @nv-md (Ali). We are in awe of their generosity, thoughtfulness, and dedication, and we have every faith in their ability to run an amazing fest for years to come. For this year, 2023, all six of us will be working together as a transitional supermod team. Then, starting in 2024, Honey, Ali, and El will take the helm.

The three of us (Honey, Ali, and El) would like to add that we are so grateful to Dicta, Grace, and Fire for shepherding H/D Erised for five (!!!) years. Erised is one of our favorite parts of December and we are so excited for future years of Erised with you. 

Most of all: H/D Erised is what it is because of all of you—your creativity, your creations, your comments, your recs, your squee, your community spirit, your enthusiasm, and your incredible love and dedication. All of us on the mod team, past, present, and future, are grateful for all that you bring to this phenomenal community, and hope to make 2023—and many years to come!!—as wonderful and exciting as ever!!

Omg! Tomorrow is December first. Which means….

H/D ERISED WILL START POSTING TOMORROW!!!!!

Are you all super excited??? We sure are. We’ve had some absolutely wonderful submissions, and we can’t wait to share them with you.

Remember, we’re posting headers on our Tumblr, with weekly round-ups and the final masterlists posting on both tumblr and dreamwidth. All content will be hosted at our AO3 Collection, where you can also leave comments to let our amazing H/D Erised creators know how much you’re enjoying their work.

A few quick reminders for our wonderful participants:

Please comment on your gift as soon as you can after it’s posted. Your gifter put a lot of work into creating something extra special just for you, and they are likely waiting anxiously to see your reaction.

With that in mind, if you see your gift has posted, but you know you won’t have time to read or view for 24 hours, it’d be awesome if you could leave a quick comment letting your gifter know, so they don’t have to spend the next few days worrying.

We know that the holiday season is a busy one both in fandom and RL, so if you’re going to be unable to access the internet for a period of time during posting, please let the mods know by sending us a quick email. If we have advance notice, we’ll do our best to try and post your gift while you’re available.

Please do not respond to any of the comments on your work until after reveals in January.

Remember that what you receive is a gift. These gifts might not follow your exact prompts or incorporate every like, but please assume that your gifter did their very best to make something special for you. Be sure to leave them a nice comment to say thank you!

We also want to encourage all our participants (and watchers!) to please be active and read and comment through the fest beyond just your gift. We know it’ll make a huge difference to every creator; they’ve all spent so many hours crafting these stories and pieces of art, and every comment means a lot!

So keep your eyes open tomorrow, and all through December. It’s going to be amazing!

Reasons Why Fans of Color Leave/Don’t Interact with Fandom

Casual racism that is brushed off as “an innocent mistake” or “they didn’t mean it�� and then everyone pretending like it didn’t happen and moving on with their day (repeat)

Speaking over fans of color about issues that pertain to them specifically

When fans of color speak out about something that makes them uncomfortable or why that don’t interact with it (usually because of the racial/ethnic bias) they are accused of being anti’s or pro-censorship

Characters of color being used as scapegoats/bashed/plot devices 

Characters of color never getting happy endings/real development

Backlash against characters of color if they do anything other than be a white character’s side kick/best friend

Actors of characters of color being harassed for something their character did or didn’t do

White characters/actors getting all the attention/credit despite the fact that they are a side character to a POC or on the same level as the POC

Fanfic authors patting themselves on the back for writing a “realistic” character of color and it’s just a bunch of stereotypes

Being told that they should be happy they were even included when they call out the above people

White fans crying about persecution/exclusion because their fav character/trope/kink/ship isn’t loved by all 

Fan artists re-imaging characters of color as white/lightening skin tone

Everyone rushing to a white fans defense after a well deserved call out while the fan of color receives hate

Never having a safe fandom space and always having to be on guard with new people/fandoms/chats etc because they’ve been burned before
