What I Learnt about Research

I bilanci si fanno a fine vita, o almeno a fine carriera. Ma non è da me. Si sa io sono pretenzioso, pieno di me, egocentrico, inutilmente pomposo, logorroico, etc. Il primo motore c'est moi. L'universo è mio, e anche tutti gli universi paralleli. Quindi che mi impedisce di fare bilanci a neanche metà del percorso della mia carriera? Niente.

D'altro canto non è il motivo per cui uno apre un blog? Per non avere qualcuno - la solita vocina fastidiosa - che ti castra l'immaginazione e il pensiero. Ho qualcosa da dire. La dico.

E poi vorrei cogliere l'occasione per "sfatare" alcuni miti positivi, e altri negativi, di questo mondo dai più ignorato, sopravvalutato, e - soprattutto - sottovalutato. I più pensano che i ricercatori siano tipi esoterici, stravaganti, che passano le loro ore in aula ad insegnare argomenti un po' pomposetti , e vivono tappati in laboratori che "puzzano" di provette e inchiostro. Vedremo che è esattamente così. Se vuoi essere uno di quei ricercatori prenteziosetti e inutili, che forse fanno anche carriera, ma che non lasciano il segno (che per un ricercatore è grave). La realtà è che la ricerca è lotta quotidiana per un finanziamento, collegamenti coi politici, con gli amministratori delegati, e la società, necessità di relazione, obbligo e desiderio di comunicazione scientifica, e di relazioni professionali qualificate. E' una lotta, una passione, e un sentimento. Come vedremo, c'è molta passione, non sempre però chi ha la passione del ricercatore occupa le cattedre giuste. Viceversa, chi occupa le cattedre non è detto che ne abbia la stoffa. La differenza sta nei dettagli, nelle scritte in piccolo. Bisogna porvi attenzione. Il tema vorrebbe anche essere una pretesa, una scusa narrativa, per spiegare il difficile mestiere del creare nuova conoscenza e nuove prassi. Naturalmente tocca indirettamente, ma non casualmente, il problema "metodologico" e concreto della ricerca. (Fine prima parte...) Parte Seconda: il Fascino della Matematica.

#PHnews: Army intensifies drive to stop youth recruitment by NPA

BALER, Aurora – The Philippine Army’s 91st Infantry Battalion (91IB) is stepping up its information and education campaign to counter the recruitment efforts of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA), particularly among the youth.

The 91IB, under the operational control of the 703rd Infantry (Agila) Brigade and 7th Infantry (Kaugnay) Division, spearheaded a series of symposiums and dialogues with the youth from July to August in this town and in Maria Aurora in its determined efforts to prevent the communist terrorist groups from infiltrating the young sector.

Lt. Col. Reandrew Rubio, commanding officer of the 91IB, said on Saturday the initiative is part of the implementation of Executive Order 70 and the Provincial Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (PTF ELCAC) through the Information and Education Campaign and Resource Control Operations to prevent the communist terrorist groups from conducting recruitment among the youths.

Rubio said the series of activities also presents the different communist rebels’ tactics and the seven stages of their infiltration to the youth sector.

“Our youth is our voice and our future leaders in the country. We should capacitate and mold them to become role models in the society. We urge the youth to support the current programs and activities of the government and be aware of the propaganda lies of the communist terrorist groups,” Rubio said.

He said they will continue to conduct such activities until all youth and other sectors are aware of the deceptive propaganda of the CPP-NPA-National Democratic Front.

Wilar P. Pascua, president of the Youth for Peace (YFP) Kadayakan in Maria Aurora, called on his fellow youths to support government programs designed for the development of their sector.

He encouraged everybody to study while young and enhance their capabilities to lead the nation in the future.

“Maganda po at hanga kami sa mga sundalo ngayon kasi may mga ganitong activity po para sa aming mga kabataan para hindi kami maligaw ng landas o ma-recruit ng mga CPP-NPA-NDF dahil ang mga kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan kaya tayo ay mag-aral ng mabuti para sa ating kinabukasan (It is nice and we admired the soldiers now because there is this kind of activity for the youth so as not to go in the wrong path and be recruited by the CPP-NPA-NDF because the youth is the hope of the nation. Thus, we need to study harder for our future),” Pascua said.

Brig. General Andrew D. Costelo, commander of 703rd Brigade, said, “nananatiling pag-asa ng ating bayan ang mga kabataan. Ingatan natin sila upang tahakin lamang ang tamang landas para kapayapaan at kaunlaran ng bansa (Our youth remains the hope of our nation. Let us take care of them so that they will go through the right path)”.

Major General Alfredo V. Rosario Jr., commander of 7th Infantry Division, said that, “Ang bukas ay hindi natin tangan, tanging ang mga kabataang papalit sa atin, ang maasahang ipagpatuloy ang ating mga simulain. Turuan natin sila nang tama at wasto ngayon para maunlad at payapang bukas para sa lahat (Tomorrow is not our hands. A strong magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off Indonesia on Sunday, the US Geological Survey reported, triggering a brief tsunami warning that sent panicked residents fleeing to higher ground. 

The Southeast Asian nation is one of the most disaster-hit on Earth due to its position straddling the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide.

Earthquakes and tsunamis have claimed thousands of lives in recent years.

Sunday’s quake struck at a depth of 24 kilometres in the Molucca Sea, 185 kilometres southeast of Manado, between Sulawesi and Malkuku islands, according to the USGS.

Indonesia’s geophysics agency issued a tsunami warning for coastal communities nearby, where residents were advised to stay away from the coast.

The warning was later lifted by the agency and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Residents of Ternate in the Maluku island chain described panic as the quake hit.

“I was getting ready to sleep when the window started rattling,” Budi Nurgianto told AFP.

“It was very strong — I ran from my house and all my neighbours fled too.”

Video footage from Ternate showed scared residents — some clutching children — fleeing from the coast on motorbikes.

Hasyim Yusuf, the head of the Ternate disaster mitigation agency, said there were no reports of fatalities, but some people were “traumatised” by the tremor.

“In Ternate, people were panicking and some evacuated to higher ground,” he told Metro TV.

An official from Indonesia’s geophysics agency, Ot Oral Sem Wilar, said he felt the tremor strongly from where he was holidaying in North Sulawesi.

“My friends in Manado said people who live along the coastal area are evacuating.”

The USGS warned that considerable damage was possible in poorly built or badly designed structures.

Last year, a 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island killed more than 2,200 with a thousand more declared missing.

It has been hit by a string of deadly quakes including a devastating 2004 tremor measuring 9.1 magnitude that struck off the coast of Sumatra and triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 throughout the region, including 168,000 in Indonesia.

The Boxing Day disaster was the world’s third biggest quake since 1900, and lifted the ocean floor in some places by 15 metres (50 feet).

Indonesia’s Aceh province was the hardest hit area, but the tsunami affected coastal areas as far away as Africa.

WILAR (What I Learnt about Research), Parte Seconda. La magia della matematica.

Non comincerò parlando di cose quotidiane. Preferisco cominciare con una citazione - con un testo che (ahimè) non è mio - con l'intenzione di far intendere, o intuire, qual è lo spirito, l'humus in cui si muove la mente e i desideri di chi fa ricerca, sin dai primi passi. Prima di tutto lo stupore per la linearità e la bellezza platonica del mondo, bellezza che si crede di poter trovare e ricostruire con formule chiare, lineari, potenti e scientificamente evocative.

Il ricercatore, è un bambino e al tempo stesso un mago, un sacerdote, che va alla ricerca delle tracce dell'armonia di Dio nell'universo. E qual è il primo luogo di armonia, di perfezione ideale e platonica, di correlazione mistica tra gli enti e i concetti che hanno potenze infinite e dimensioni metafisiche? La matematica. L'odiatissima matematica che per il ricercatore puro significa abbandono della contingenza, spinta verso l'ultraterreno, e viaggio nelle braccia metafisiche della logica divina.

Riporto qua la bellissima descrizione (la parte iniziale, prosegue con una dimostrazione che non riporto per ora) della cosidetta formula di Eulero-Lindemann. Quella che è stata chiamata la formula più "bella" della matematica, proprio da quel Feynman che citavo alcuni giorni fa. Ma leggiamo che dice l'autore del pezzo.

La prima volta che ci si imbatte nella formula di Eulero [nota: vedi qui sopra] non si può fare a meno di rimanere "scioccati", oltre che un po’ increduli, di fronte al mistero che la sua semplicità racchiude in così pochi simboli. Numeri che provengono da contesti della matematica completamente diversi incrociano i loro destini in un’uguaglianza che più semplice non si poteva.

Di fronte a quella che dalla maggior parte dei matematici è considerata “La” formula più bella della matematica, l’eminente professore, proprio come il suo allievo, trova una difficoltà insormontabile nel tentare di percepirne fino a fondo il significato, e non può che arrendersi nel constatare una profondità più grande di lui. Come mai le due costanti e e π, provenienti da differenti ambiti della matematica, sono legate tramite il numero immaginario i in un modo così bizzarro? Talvolta capita che gli studenti siano addirittura tentati di “rifiutare” l'esistenza dei numeri immaginari, in quanto lontani dalla realtà e apparentemente artificiosi, eppure mai come in questo caso entità così astratte si rivelano intimamente legate ai più elementari dei numeri naturali: l’uno e lo zero.

Si dice che Gauss, forse il più grande e prolifico matematico di tutti i tempi, un giorno abbia ironicamente commentato che, se ad una persona la formula non appare immediatamente ovvia,questi non potrà mai essere un grande matematico! In effetti la dimostrazione è relativamente semplice per chi abbia un minimo di dimestichezza con i numeri complessi e il calcolo integrale...Anche dopo averla accettata, però, la dimostrazione non darà mai la soddisfazione di svelare completamente il profondo segreto che la formula sembra nascondere in sé.

Richard P. Feynman, fisico americano premio Nobel nel 1965 per i suoi studi sull’elettrodinamica quantistica, fu uno dei primi ad eleggerla “formula più bella di tutti i tempi”, quando all’età di 13 anni la inserì con tale appellativo nel suo quaderno di liceale. E come dargli torto? La prima cosa che si nota è che compaiono, una dopo l'altra, come in rassegna, tutte le entità fondamentali della matematica: la costante di Nepero (e = 2,7182818...), il valore di pi greco (π =

3,14159265...), l’unità immaginaria i (radice quadrata di –1), il numero 1 (elemento neutro per la moltiplicazione) e il numero 0 (elemento neutro per la somma).

Anche dal punto di vista storico, i concetti che vengono evocati spaziano attraverso le epoche e i luoghi che hanno fatto la storia della matematica: si pensi al periodo aureo della geometria greca (costante π), agli influssi della matematica indiana, che introdusse il concetto di zero, al dibattito rinascimentale italiano fra Tartaglia e Cardano relativamente alla risoluzione delle equazioni di terzo grado (unità immaginaria i), per poi passare alla nascita dei logaritmi ai tempi di Nepero (costante e), e infine al numero 1, onnipresente in tutte le culture e in tutti i tempi. Com’è possibile che queste entità fondamentali e apparentemente lontane tra loro possano intrecciarsi elegantemente a formare un tutt’uno di così pregevole armonia? Che cosa ci può essere di più mistico di un numero immaginario che interagisce con costanti reali per produrre il niente. [...]
