Aspen’s journey began when she found herself at the Austin Humane Society (AHS) after being rescued from the Bastrop County Animal Services shelter, where her life was in jeopardy. It was immediately clear that Aspen was unique; she was deaf and unable to respond to verbal commands. However, the compassionate volunteers at AHS refused to let this obstacle stand in her way.
Teaching a dog sign language may sound like a daunting task, but as Katie Kennedy, AHS’s director of communications, explained, it’s not as different from regular dog training as one might think. Dogs already respond to various hand signals when learning commands like “sit” or “lay down.” For Aspen, the challenge was identifying the specific hand gestures that would replace verbal commands, effectively creating her unique sign language.
Aspen’s journey to learn sign language was marked by dedication and love from volunteers who used treats as positive reinforcement for correct responses. Through this approach, Aspen quickly picked up commands like “good girl” and “watch me.” This not only showcased Aspen’s remarkable ability to adapt but also made her more approachable to potential adopters.

AHS’s “Foster to Adopt” program allowed Aspen to meet several prospective owners to find the perfect match. On December 7th, that perfect match came, and Aspen found her forever home. The heartwarming photo of Aspen smiling in her sleep seemed to symbolize her contentment and the alignment of her new life with a loving family.

Coffee, once considered a beverage for adults, has gained popularity among teenagers in recent years. This growing trend has sparked discussions about the positive aspects of the relationship between coffee and teenagers. While excessive consumption should be avoided, moderate coffee intake can have several benefits for teenagers, including increased alertness, improved cognitive function, and social bonding opportunities.
Firstly, coffee's caffeine content stimulates the central nervous system, leading to increased alertness and improved concentration. This can be especially beneficial for teenagers juggling demanding academic schedules. By enhancing focus, coffee can aid in better retention of information and improved performance in exams.
Secondly, moderate coffee consumption has been linked to enhanced cognitive function. The presence of antioxidants in coffee may contribute to the prevention of age-related cognitive decline, potentially benefiting teenagers in the long run.
Lastly, coffee serves as a social catalyst, fostering connections and friendships among teenagers. Coffee shops have become popular gathering places where teenagers can engage in conversations, share experiences, and build relationships in a relaxed and inclusive environment.
In moderation, coffee can have a positive impact on teenagers. Increased alertness, improved cognitive function, and the opportunity for social bonding are among the benefits associated with responsible coffee consumption. However, it is important for teenagers to understand the importance of moderation and not rely solely on coffee for energy or neglect other essential aspects of a healthy lifestyle. By striking a balance, teenagers can enjoy the positive relationship between coffee and their overall well-being.
