Less Lonely #3

This was an eventful week. One happening worthy of note: this sign went missing. The post has been cut; the blank board was removed. Perhaps it was used as firewood. Maybe it was idly pilfered. Either way, it leaves me looking.

To be honest, I don’t know for sure if the sign went missing this week. All I know is that I noticed its absence on Wednesday. I hadn’t visited this spot, a favorite of mine,  in a couple weeks. On returning, I was struck by the change.

I’ve only  ever known the sign to be blank, its prompts eroded by weather or erased by vandals. Still its presence alerted me to the fact that here there was something worth looking at. It gave me pause.

Had the sign retained its text, I suspect my pauses would have been shorter. I would have stopped and read and seen as instructed. In its absence, I’m left to look, to wonder, to imagine: what’s here?
